Caitlin's P.O.V
' ' - Texting
As I drove, following the directions that would lead me to my new home, all I could think about was how beautiful this city was. It was the beginning of November and there was a slight chill in the air. With this, the trees were all beginning to turn all sorts of shades of red and gold. The buildings towered into the sky like mountains and even though it was starting to get cold out the city seemed to be alive.
Along with traffic and taking it slow, I arrived at the address that Barry had sent to me in just under 10 minutes. After I parked I decided that the best thing to do now was to text him and see exactly which floor we were on and what the number of the appartment was.
'Hey, I just parked. Should I meet you downstairs or should I come to you?'
Almost as soon as I hit send I could see that he was already typing out his response.
'You can come up to me so that you can see the place. Take the elevator to the top floor, when you get out hang a left and it'll be the last door on your right. It's unlocked so you can come on in!'
'Alright, see you in a bit!'
I got out of my car and made my way into the building. I took the elevator to the top floor and walked down the hallway to my left just as Barry had instructed.
As I stood outside the last door on the right I realized that this has got to be the most adventurous thing I have ever done in my life. Which in hindsight is kinda sad, but I didn't become a Bio-Engineer by partying and being outgoing. I got here by having discipline and a strong work ethic. But now, standing outside of an apartment with a guy who I agreed to live with after just one meeting on the other side… I'm starting to wonder whether or not I'm making the right choice.
Well, it's either step WAY outside of your comfort zone now, or not have anywhere but your car to sleep tonight.
As I weighed my options I realized that there was only one logical choice here… so I opened the door and took my first step into the unknown.
Woah…
I don't know what I was expecting… but it certainly was NOT this.
As I walked through the doors I realized that this was no ordinary apartment. This was a beautiful loft with an open floor plan that from what I could tell was fully furnished.
There was a big kitchen table that had blue chairs with wooden legs, a couple of sofas that had the same blue fabric and wood as the kitchen chairs which I can only assume means he got them from the same place. Finally, the kitchen area had a wall of dark wood cabinets and drawers, there was a section of that wall that had space for a sink and countertop with a white marble backsplash and peninsula with bar stools that had the same seats as the kitchen chairs with a chrome base.
Seated at one of those stools was the man who I would soon be sharing this space with. In front of him on the countertop was a small stack of papers.
"Uh, hey."
"Hey," Barry said now standing and taking a step towards me, "sorry, I didn't hear you come in. Did you find the place ok?"
"Yea, completely. This place is beautiful." I said as I offered him a kind smile.
Considering when we met we were both sitting down I didn't actually notice how tall he was. He was easily six inches taller than me and he had this energy about him that I can only describe as calming. Like he could make any problem disappear with the power of positive thinking.
"Thanks, I'm glad you like it!" Barry said, almost sounding relieved.
"So, is that the paperwork?" I asked, gesturing towards the stack on the counter.
"Oh yea," he said while scooping the papers up into his hands, "care for the official tour?"
"I'd like that, yea."
Barry walked me around the loft showing me everything from which remote controls the T.V. to how the knobs in the shower worked. Eventually we got to the bedrooms.
"So," said Barry, "this is a two bed one bath but I promise that I will do my best to keep the bathroom as clean as possible." he said with a warm smile.
"Hey, that's fine with me." I said returning a smile
"Great! So here's my room, it's nothing really that special." Barry said as he opened the door to his room. Inside I could see his bed, a nightstand with a lamp, a desk with some folders strewn about and a picture frame facing away from the door.
He then led me past the bathroom, which was directly between the two rooms, to a door that was on the other side of the hall that directly faced his.
"Here's your room." he said while leading me into the space.
It was pretty much the same as his with a nightstand, lamp, and desk except that the bed needed some sheets and pillows which I was actually kind of grateful for considering I had planned on buying my own anyway.
God, I really lucked out on this one.
"So," Barry said snapping me out of my trance, "what do you think of the place?"
"I gotta be honest with you, I don't really know about this." I say suppressing a smile as I see his face start to drop,
"I'm kidding," I say, letting out a small laugh, "this place is absolutely amazing. I love it!"
With that the smile instantly returned to his face and then some.
"Oh, you scared me there for a sec." Barry said while grinning ear to ear. "I'm glad you like it!"
"I do have just one question..."
"Sure, ask away."
As I took one last look around the room I began to feel as though this was truly going to be the start of something amazing. A chance for me to leave my past behind me and step into my future. With that last thought I turned my head and met Barry's gaze with a smile and asked him the only question that seemed appropriate.
"Where do I sign?"
Wow… three years huh… better late than never I guess.
I will say that it feels great to be writing again. It's been awhile since I've had this much fun writing anything.
