Chapter Eleven: The Tung Shao Pass

The village had bee completely destroyed. The wall surrounding the city had been completely devastated, but the inside was much worse. The buildings had been badly burnt and some of the fires still flickered as a bell held only by a single rope gonged. None of them could believe their eyes as they walked into the main entrance of the village. Everywhere they looked, all they could really see was the destruction. Even from their hiding spot in the wagon, Mushu and Cri-Kee could hardly believe the devastation they were witnessing. After a few steps in, Bandit turned his horse and ordered, "Search this place for survivors. Maybe there might be a few dogs still here."

Everyone nodded as they headed out to start looking. Chili motioned for King to stay put while she walked off. Stripe, Pat and Rad took one section while a few others went off in another. Chili searched by herself and headed to one of the houses.

As he was searching by a ruined building, the creaking of the charred wood made Bandit and his horse look before some fell. It caused Bandit's horse to whinny in fright. Bandit gently rubbed the horse's neck to calm him down. When his steed had been calmed enough, Bandit then flicked the reins to continue the search.

Over at one of the ruined buildings, Chili pushed past a tattered flap and didn't see anyone. But as she walked in and looked about, her eyes went down to the snow-covered ground and found a doll lying there. Chili leaned down and picked it up to look at it. But as she looked at it, she couldn't help but feel heartbroken about what had happened here. Bandit pulled up to the house and dismounted from his horse as it nickered. He walked up next to Chili and looked about the desolation. She looked to him and saw that he was both worried and confused. He shook his head, "I just don't understand it. My father should've been here. Him and his soldiers."

"Captain!" Ar Fe's voice called out, making them both look to the Bulldog. They walked over to find him standing on a small hill. He was pointing at something at the bottom. But when everyone else walked over, they were horrified to not only see the slain soldiers of the Imperial Army, but that of the villagers as well. But none were as shocked as Bandit to see that every single one of the dogs in his father's army had been killed in battle. He looked to his left to see a mournful Rad walking up with something in the crook of his arm. Bandit gasped when he saw that it was his father's helmet. A reluctant Rad handed Bandit the helmet, "The General, sir." With a shake of his head, "I'm so sorry."

Bandit shakily took the helmet from Rad, became saddened from what this meant and walked away. While Rad and Ar Fe watched him go, everyone else came to the edge of the hill. They too became shocked and horrified at what they were seeing. But Chili knew that the one affected most by this was Bandit when she looked over to her Captain. The wind was blowing at his cap as he stood alone a few yards away from the others. Removing the sword that his father gave him from its scabbard, he sunk it into the snow-covered ground. When he was sure that it nicely tucked in, Bandit then kneeled down and placed his father's helmet onto the hilt of the sword as a grave marker. He bowed to it in respect of the memory of his father.

Chili walked up to her saddened captain and kept a few feet back. She knew that it wouldn't change much, but she decided to be a friend to him when she said, "I really am sorry, Bandit."

Bandit looked back and though he didn't look it, the words did comfort him just a little. With a saddened sigh, the Blue Heeler rose off the ground and turned to leave. But before he got too far, he patted Chili on the shoulder. Chili watched him go before turning back to the grave marker. She was about to place the doll down up against it when she heard Pat yell, "Hey, you guys! I think I found someone!"

Everyone quickly dashed to where they heard the Golden Retriever. He was by a destroyed building of bricks. He was currently digging out some snow when they heard a few shouts coming from below, "We're down here! Help us!"

"Hang on!" Stripe shouted as he, Rad and Chili all joined in the digging. They dug up came on a door and someone inside it was banging on it to get out. Chili reassured them by saying, "Hang on, we'll get you out of there."

They soon got enough snow out of the way and the door was thrown open. Two young she-dogs came rushing out and barreled into Chili. Using her manly voice she said, "It's okay, there girls. You're safe now."

But Chili gasped when she saw who it was. It was the Blue Heeler and the Red Heeler who tried to help her impress the matchmaker weeks ago. They looked up to Chili and looked like they were starting to recognize her. But before they could say anything, Bandit walked up to them and asked, "Girls, what happened?"

"And why are you here?" Chili asked them, knowing that she would have to explain later. The girls looked to each other and the Blue Heeler said, "It all started a few days ago."

"The Huns came up the pass and the General had ordered all the villagers to keep away from the battle." Her sister said. Both shivered at the memories when the older she-dog pointed behind them and said, "But even though we hid in there the whole time, we could still hear the sounds. And it wasn't sounding too good."

"Oh, you poor girls." Rad said and kneeled down to hug them. The two young she-dogs took comfort in the hug. When he released them, the young Red Heeler asked, "Are there… any others?"

"I'm afraid not." Bandit shook his head. Pat looked to his captain and asked, "What will we do, Captain? We can't just leave them here, especially if the Huns are still around."

"But we can't take them with us either." Ar Fe argued, earning a few glares. With a scoff he said, "Besides, they'll only end up slowing us down."

Suddenly he let out a pained howl and everyone looked down to see that Bluey had kicked him hard in the shin. Pat looked to Stripe and said, "I think I like these two. They've got spunk."

"Mm-hmm." Stripe nodded. Chili looked to the girls and said, "But, Bluey, Bingo… that still doesn't explain why the two of you are here."

"Well, it was our Granddad and Nana had sent us up here, thinking it would be the safest for all of us." Bluey said and glanced to her sister. What she said donned on all of them and Pat asked, "So, your grandparents were here with you."

"Oh." The girls said in realization. With this new information, Rad looked to Bandit and said, "It's your call, sir."

"They come with us." Bandit said without hesitation. While Ar Fe hmphed and crossed his arms, Chili and the soldiers all nodded their approval. Bandit's horse walked up to them and Bandit remounted it. Looking to everyone he said, "We need to get a move on. The Huns are moving much quicker without anything to slow them down.

"As we've seen." Bandit said, referring to the battlefield. No one said anything and Bandit told them, "We'll make much better time to the Imperial City through the Tung Shao Pass. We're the only hope for the Emperor now."

"Jackie-Jack." Bandit said and Chili stood up straight. Both Bluey and Bingo caught onto this and Bandit said, "Watch over the girls during our travels through the pass."

"Yes, sir." Chili said in her manly voice. The sisters looked to each other with questioning looks and Bingo just shrugged as she didn't know what was going on. Bandit then ordered, "Let's move out!"

"You dogs heard him, let's move out." Bingo adorably said as she looked to the soldier dogs, making a few dogs go, "Aw!"

That caused both her and her sister to giggle as they took Chili's paws and they started walking. While most of the other soldiers were walking ahead, Bluey looked up to their friend and asked, "Why are you with the soldiers, Ch-"

Chili quickly shushed the little she-dog and looked to see if anyone had heard the question. Taking a moment, Chili turned to them and said, "Girls, you have to listen. I'm here so my father wouldn't have to come."

"But he's a soldier, isn't he?" She asked him. While Chili nodded, she explained, "I know, I know. But he's already fought for us. And with his injury I feared, everyone in my family feared, that he wouldn't come back."

"Oh." Both girls said in realization. Chili then asked, "So, for the time being, please refer to me as Jackie-Jack. Or Jack for short."

"Okay, Chi-" Bluey started to say, making Chili a little nervous. Luckily she caught on and said, "Jackie-Jack."

"Jackie-Jack." Bingo lightly laughed at the sound of Chili's made-up name. A smirk formed on Chili's face as she grabbed them and tickled them, "Come here, you little rascals."

It made both girls laugh a little despite everything that they had been through. Bingo suddenly noticed something in Chili's belt and asked, "What's that, Jackie?"

"Hm." Chili asked as the young she-dog pulled the doll out. A smile formed on her face and she squealed, "My doll."

"This is yours?" Chili asked. Bingo nodded with a smile and said, "Yeah, I had set it down when I wasn't playing for a moment, and when I turned back I saw a falcon carrying it away."

"I saw it all." Bluey nodded in agreement. She then said, "And then we saw it fly a good distance away from the mountain to the forest."

"Huh." Chili said as she didn't know what to say. Glancing back to the others of her troop she gasped, "Oops. Looks like we need to get a move on, girls."

"Okay." Both young she-dogs nodded and they started walking again. As they walked, Chili took a glance to the grave marker that Bandit had made to his father and couldn't help but feel greatly sorry for the Blue Heeler.

After an hour of walking, the group had made it into the Tung Shao Pass. While Bandit and Ar Fe were at the head, just about everyone else made the middle while Chili and King pulling the cart brought up the rear. Bluey and Bingo were with Pat, Stripe and Rad. The three were currently playing with the two pups as they were swinging them while holding their hands. Though while most of their spirits had been lifted with the discovery of the two, Bandit's was still down after learning what had happened to his father. The group was coming around a bend when a cannon went off and flew out of the cart, making everyone cringe. They all looked to see the projectile fly through the air before exploding in the sky.

Pat, Bluey, Stripe, Bingo and Rad looked to each other in confusion while Chili and King looked to the one responsible with an annoyed look. A shocked Mushu and Cri-Kee were at the whole, looking very shocked at what had just happened. Hoping to save face, Mushu pointed to the cricket who gave him an offended look. Chili and King's attention were stolen when Bandit came riding back to them and questioned, "What just happened?"

"I, uh-" Chili tried to think of a good excuse. Pointing to the sky, an annoyed and worried Bandit shouted, "You just went and gave away our position! Now we're…"

He was cut off when an arrow struck him in the left shoulder. The force was enough to knock him off of his horse and it caused Bluey and Bingo to scream in fright. Luckily for Bandit, the arrow hadn't pierced his shoulder and was stuck in his armor. He violently ripped out when they all heard war cries coming from the mountain. Bingo shouted, "Up there!"

Everyone looked to where she was pointing as the Huns sent a volley of arrows down at them. Bandit looked to his troops and shouted, "Get out of range! Protect the girls!"

Rad complied with both by picking the girls up and started running for cover. Everyone screamed as they followed after him. Chili struggled to get King to start moving towards the shelter. Up on the mountain, the Huns started shooting flaming arrows at them. Everyone had to duck as they ran while Chili pulled King to safety. But a few arrows started to hit the cart when Mushu took a peek. He screamed before pulling the curtains to try and avoid being hit. Chili and King looked back to see the cart starting to catch fire. Bandit, who had looked back, looked to the others and ordered, "Save the cannons!"

While Rad stayed with the girls, Pat and Stripe moved to help the others unload the cart. They shouted as they removed the cannons, "Come on! Come on! Get it empty!"

They moved some down a line of soldiers while others carried them by an arm load. Inside the cart, Mushu and Cri-Kee moved out of the way when some of the flaming arrows were falling at them. They were cornered against the wall and Mushu had to duck when an arrow was close to hitting him in the head. Back outside the cart, Chili was trying to get King untied from the cart but was having trouble as arrows kept raining down around her. Deciding to switch tactics, Chili unsheathed her blade and sliced through the ropes binding King to the cart. When he was free, Chili quickly jumped on before the horse took off from the burning cart. But they were still caught up in the blast when the remaining cannons in the cart detonated. From their cover, Bluey and Bingo had seen it all and shouted, "Oh, no!"

"Look, girls!" Rad said and pointed to Chili when she landed. Looking to the two pups he said, "He's going to be alright."

"I think you mean-" Bingo started to correct. But Bluey was quick to shush her and gave her a knowing look. Bingo then remembered and quickly saved it by saying, "Uh, you're right. He's okay."

Rad gave the two girls a questioning look before gasping and shoving them down when a few arrows came their way.

From over in her spot in the snow, Chili started to rise up just as Mushu and Cri-Kee landed in front of her. A dizzy Mushu lifted himself from the snow and turned to Chili. Pointing to King who was picking himself up he said, "Oh, sure. Go and save the horse."

He fainted and fell back down into the snow as Cri-Kee popped up. Chili looked to see that many of her company had gathered around the rocks. With a quick sweep of her paw she grabbed the dragon and the cricket with one paw and her sword with the other. Her and King both made a run for it to get to the shelter as more and more arrows rained down on them.

From their cover, some of the soldiers had a few cannons ready as Bandit ordered, "Fire!"

They lit the cannon's fuses and the cannon heads were launched up to the mountain. The Huns all screamed when they tried to jump out of the way when the cannon heads hit the mountain where they were and exploded. Leaving the girls with Ar Fe, Rad grabbed a few more cannons before running to join the others. Bingo and Bluey looked to Ar Fe who had been cowering behind the cannons but whimpered and assumed the fetal position. Bluey and Bingo looked to each other before quickly hiding behind the rock next to the cowering Bulldog.

Rad brought his load to Stripe and Pat who took them and quickly prepared them. Everyone had to duck or take cover when the Huns shot a few more flaming arrows at them. When the volley ended, Bandit looked to his own troops and ordered, "Fire!"

The Imperial Troops lit the fuses and retaliated back by firing their cannons. The cannon shots found their marks and much of the arrows from the Huns stopped after some large explosions. Not seeing any movement, Bandit made a motion with his paw and ordered Stripe, "Hold the last cannon."

Everyone waited to see what would happen and they got a chill when they looked up the hill. They saw a figure appear as the last of the smoke cloud dissipated and it revealed John Blitz on his horse. The Hun's horse whinnied once and more of the Huns suddenly appeared on both sides of their leader. Everyone's eyes widened with fear when they saw how many Huns were at the top of the hill. Each of the Huns howled battle cries. Bandit looked back to his own dogs and ordered, "Prepare to fight." Most of the troops were starting to unsheathe their blades as he said, "If we're to die, then we'll die with honor."

"Uh, Bandit." Stripe said before pointing back to the girls with his thumb. But as Bandit started to try and think to get the girls to safety, up on the hill, John Blitz unsheathed his own sword before urging his horse forward. The rest of the Huns followed suit down the snow-covered hill. Bandit, shaking his head, ordered Stripe, "Stripe, aim the cannon at John Blitz. And during the confusion, Ar Fe will take the girls and try to make a run for it."

Seeing no alternative, Stripe started to aim the last cannon at the head of the Hun army. Chili knew that this move would take down John Blitz, but they still had to worry about the rest of the Huns. She looked at her sword and noticed something in the blade's reflection. She saw the mountain as it was upside down in the reflection. An idea came to her when she looked up to the mountain, and she knew it was a risky one, but it could also grant them a victory.

Sheathing her blade, Chili took the risk as she pushed Stripe to the side and grabbed the cannon. Stripe looked to the Red Heeler with a, "Hey!"

"Jackie-Jack! Come back!" Bandit ordered, thinking that Chili was crazy. But Chili didn't stop running, even when her Captain shouted again, "Jackie-Jack!"

King whinnied when he saw Chili running towards the danger. From their spot with Ar Fe, Bluey and Bingo watched the whole thing with dropped jaws. Bingo looked to her sister and whispered, "What do you think she's doing?"

"I don't know." Bluey shook her head.

As Chili ran, Mushu popped up on her shoulder and gave her a questioning look. He looked to see the approaching Huns. The entire enemy army continued howling as John Blitz's falcon flew over ahead and screeched. Chili soon came to a good spot when she heard Bandit shout to her, "Jack, stop!"

Bandit knew that he couldn't let Jackie-Jack be out there alone and rushed to save his comrade. Chili on the other hand, set the cannon down and started to aim it. At first she was pointing it at the approaching John Blitz when she raised it to the mountain. Mushu gasped when he saw John Blitz getting much closer. Looking to Chili he advised, "All right, Chill. You might want to hurry up and light that thing right about now."

Frantically searching her armor, Chili pulled out her flint and tried to make a spark. She was trying her best to light it, but the pressure from the approaching Huns and Mushu urging her wasn't making it any better, "Come on. Quickly. Quickly!"

But just when she got a few sparks going, the falcon swooped in and knocked it from her hands. The force behind it knocked Chili down as the falcon took off with a screech. From their spot, Stripe, Pat and Rad saw their friend in trouble. Raising his sword, Stripe shouted, "Come on, fellas! We got to help!"

"Yeah!" Both Pat and Rad shouted and the three let out war cries before rushing forward.

Chili was frantically searching the snow for her flint, but neither she nor Mushu could find it. They both looked to see John Blitz getting closer with his sword at the ready. Chili looked about and thought about what she could use when her gaze fell on Mushu. The dragon got an idea on what she was thinking about and tried to make a run for it. He didn't get very far when she grabbed him and pulled on him hard. Mushu coughed out some flames and it lit up the cannon's fuse. She released him and Mushu ended up tumbling on the cannon head. Chili made sure that the cannon was still aimed I the right spot and it went off when John Blitz was a few feet from her. The explosion caused John Blitz's horse to back up in fright. Up on the flying cannon head, Mushu ranted to her, "You missed! How could you miss hitting him? He was three feet right in front of you!"

The cannon head landed near the peak of the mountain and a few seconds went by before it exploded. But it was enough to create an avalanche as the snow started to fall from the mountain. Chili smirked to see that her plan had worked, and it confused John Blitz for a moment. He looked back and gasped when he saw the avalanche coming down. All the Huns screamed in fright as the avalanche came down at them. John Blitz looked at Chili with a glare and raised his sword with a growl. He swung his blade and it cut a little into her side. Chili groaned as she was knocked down and clutched her side as she ran to get away.

John Blitz tried to gain control over his horse when it became frightened of the incoming avalanche. Behind him, many of his Huns were swallowed by the rushing snow. Chili ran up to Bandit who had stopped and witnessed the avalanche. Grabbing his paw, they both broke into a run back to their cover.

Stripe, Pat and Rad were still running to help when they finally noticed the incoming avalanche. Their sword arms dropped as they looked to the rushing snow. They all started screaming when they turned tail and ran back to safety. King broke free of the soldier dog who was trying to keep calm and sprinted to save Chili.

John Blitz and his Huns still tried to outrun the avalanche and he tried to urge the horse to go faster by slapping it in the side with the broadside of his sword. But as the last of his army was swallowed by the rushing snow, John Blitz cried out as he too was overcome and disappeared beneath it.

Chili and Bandit kept running for their lives and Chili saw King running up to them. She was quick to climb on before reaching out to Bandit. He grabbed her paw, but the avalanche caught up to them and hit them. Those hiding behind the cover became afraid as their eyes grew wider. They all yelled as they made sure to hid behind some of the rocks when the avalanche hit. Snow flowed all around them and the girls both squealed out. The trio held onto the two as they rode it out. They watched as lots and lots of snow rushed past them and went over the edge of a cliff.

Further up the mountain, Mushu was using a dropped Hun shield as a sled and shouted, "Chili!" He continued to keep an eye out for his charge when he shouted again, "Chili!"

When he looked forward he noticed something sticking out of the snow. Seeing that it was hair, he reached down and grabbed it and hopefully asked, "Chili?"

He became scared when he pulled up a growling Hun. He shoved the dog back under and looked to the reader with a, "Nope!

"Chili!" He shouted as he kept on searching. He spotted something else and grabbed Cri-Kee from the snow. He laughed when he said, "Man, you are one lucky bug."

Cri-Kee gave a sigh as he thought that that luck had nearly gotten him killed. The two kept sliding down the mountain in search for Chili.

Speaking of Chili, she and King burst out of the moving snow and fought to stay above. It wasn't easy as the rushing snow knocked them down a few times. Chili glanced behind her and saw an unconscious Bandit being carried off. She became worried when she called out, "Bandit!"

Turning King around, they went with the flow of the avalanche to catch up to Bandit. They were able to reach him in time and Chili scooped him out of the snow. She had to strain when she lifted him before placing him in front of her on the horse.

Over with the others, Rad made a base with Pat sitting on his shoulders and Stripe sitting on Pat's shoulders. The Blue Heeler had a bow and an arrow tied to some rope in his paws. Glancing up Rad asked, "Do you see them, Stripe?"

"Yes." Stripe nodded when she spotted them. He took aim with the arrow before he fired. The arrow flew straight to their friends and Stripe nodded, "Perfect." He was about to grab it when he said, "Now we'll just pull them to safe…" He tried to grab for the rope, but it got away from him, "ty."

"Ah!" Bluey and Bingo shouted and their paws flew to their cheeks in a panic.

Mushu and Cri-Kee were able to catch up to Chili on their shield. The dragon held the cricket up and said, "Hey, Chili! I found the lucky cricket!"

"We need help!" Chili shouted back to him. They were startled when the arrow landed in the snow beside them. Another idea coming to her, Chili grabbed the arrow and pulled it out. She quickly moved to try and save them all. Mushu kept a firm grip on Cri-Kee as he jumped onto King's back. Feeling safe he looked to the cricket, "Nice. Very nice." Setting Cri-Kee beside him he said, "You can sit right here by me."

Cri-Kee nodded his approval to the dragon. But when they looked, they screamed when they noticed how close to the edge they were getting. Mushu frantically screamed, "We're gonna die! We are going to die! Oh, we are definitely gonna die.

"No way we're going to survive this." He shouted as they started to go over the edge. Everyone panicked as they started to fall and Mushu shouted, "Death is coming for us!"

But Chili was quick to grab a bow that had been conveniently tucked into King's saddle bag and shot the arrow back with it. Up on the cliff, a blubbering Stripe was bawling his eyes out, "I'm so ashamed." He lifted his paws in sadness, "I let them slip through my fingers."

But fate gave him some redemption when the arrow he shot landed in his paws. He was surprised by this before screaming when he was yanked off his paws. Stripe slid towards the cliff, but lucky for him, all the other dogs quickly came to his rescue and kept him from going over the edge. Stripe looked to them and shouted, "Pull!"

Each of the dogs started to pull, but it wasn't going so well as they weren't able to bring the rope up. Behind them, Rad looked to the girls and suggested, "Let's give them a hand, shall we?"

All three brought their paws together as they walked up to the struggling dogs. All three grabbed one of their friends before effortlessly pulling them back from the edge. The dogs being pulled looked to each other in confusion while Stripe kept a grip on the rope. They were able to pull all five of them; Chili, Bandit, King, Mushu and Cri-Kee back up the cliff. As she kept a grip on the rope, Mushu started cheering, "I knew we could do it.

"You the man!" He playfully punched Chili's arm and she smiled. Mushu moved to hide when they were getting closer to the top. He popped out and added, "Well, sort of."

Chili gave him a look but decided to let it go. When they had brought them up enough, Stripe and Pat helped Bandit and Chili off the horse while King was able to pull himself onto the mountain. King moved further up while the soldiers checked on the two. Bandit came to and Pat pushed the others back a little, "Step back, you guys. Give him some air."

Bandit gasped as he sat up and looked to Chili as she moved to give him a little space. Looking to the Red Heeler he said, "Jackie-Jack?"

From the sound of his voice, Chili believed that he was upset with her. It seemed that way when Bandit shook his head, "You are the craziest dog that I have ever met."

She seemed to be greatly disappointed and thought that something bad would happen. But she was proven wrong when he gratefully said, "And for that, I greatly owe you my life."

"All of our lives!" Bluey and Bingo shouted when they rushed up and hugged the older she-dog. Bandit chuckled and sat up when he said, "So from now on, you have my trust."

"Let's hear it for Jackie-Jack! The bravest of us all!" Pat shouted and cheers rang out through the company. Even Bluey and Bingo jumped up and down to cheer. Stripe raised both paws in the air when he shouted, "You're king of the mountain."

"Yes, yes, yes!" Rad shouted as they all started jumping up and down in excitement. He may have gotten a little too excited when he bumped into another dog. The dog gave him an annoyed look and Rad quickly offered, "Oops. Sorry."

Bandit helped Chili to her feet as the others continued whooping. But when she was on her own two paws, Chili felt a sharp pain in her side and groaned, "Ah!"

"Jackie!" Bandit, Bluey and Bingo cried out, ending the cheers. She clutched her side and dropped down to her knees when Bandit asked, "What's wrong?"

"Let us see." Bingo urged and tried to remove Chili's paw. Groaning in pain, Chili did remove it to show a red stain on it. Both girls gasped at the sight and Bandit looked to the others and ordered, "He's been wounded! Get some help here, now!"

"Jackie?" A really worried Bingo asked as her vision started to blur. A couple of soldiers quickly ran off to get someone. The sisters helped Chili lay down as Bandit urged his friend, "Jackie, just hold on." Her world darkened when he said, "Hold on."

Chili fell unconscious and everyone looked scared for her.

Bluey: That was pretty much the scariest thirty minutes within my life. And that was for only one chapter.

Bingo: But I did like the funny bits.

Bluey nods: Oh, yeah, me too.

TheWriterForGod42: There was a great deal of humor in this chapter. Can't really be said for the next one though.
