Chapter Twelve: Finding Out the Truth

The sun had touched the mountains when someone had returned with a doctor dog for the wounded Chili. Some of the dogs gently pulled their comrade into a quickly constructed tent. The doctor ushered the rest out before getting to work on Chili.

Outside the tent, the sun was starting to go down as everyone waited in anticipation. While Bandit paced just a few feet from the tent, Stripe, Bluey, Rad, Bingo, and Pat all sat on a rock, looking really worried. Both Bluey and Bingo were trembling with fear for their friend. But they, like Mushu, were also worried about if and when the doctor found out the truth about the soldier he was treating. After about thirty minutes, the doctor came from the flaps and Bandit quickly walked over to him. The doctor then said, "I've treated the wound. There's no more danger from it."

"He's says that Jackie's going to be fine." Bandit reported to the group. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, but the doctor still had a worried look on his face. He leaned closer to Bandit and whispered something into his ear. When he finished, Bandit stood up straight before looking to the tent. Mushu and Cri-Kee, who had been hiding beside the tent, knew that Chili had been found out.

Bandit went into the tent with a questioning look. He saw Chili laying there when she opened her eyes. She smiled when she saw him standing there, but the smile quickly faded when she saw the look on his face. Bandit then questioned, "Is it true?

"You're a-" He stopped himself when he couldn't finish the sentence. Chili's eyes widened when she realized that she had been found out. Chili sat up and the blanket fell from her bandaged body. She sighed before saying, "I can explain everything."

"Don't bother." Bandit shook his head and turned to leave. That was when Ar Fe came into the room and looked quite shocked, "So it's true what the doctor said!"

"Bandit, wait!" Chili called to her captain as the Blue Heeler marched out of the tent. But she didn't have time to worry about it as Ar Fe marched up to her and roughly grabbed her arm. He yanked her to her feet and loudly said so all could hear him, "I knew that there was something wrong with you!

"You are a she-dog!" He shouted before shoving her out of the tent. Chili grunted when she landed in the snow. Everyone gasped in shock when her secret had been revealed. Bingo and Bluey started to rush up to her when they were stopped by Stripe, Pat and Rad. Ar Fe pointed an accusing finger and said, "You treacherous snake."

"My name is Chili." The Red Heeler said when she got up onto her knees. She turned to Bandit who had his back to her and explained why, "I did it to save my father."

"It's true. She told us." Bingo revealed and Bluey nodded to confirm it. Bandit's gaze somewhat softened, but this act still stung him. Ar Fe pointed at her and shouted at the top of his lungs, "An act of high treason!"

"I didn't mean for it to get this far." Chili said, at least a little ashamed of the lie that she had played. Ar Fe got in her face and shouted, "The ultimate dishonor!"

Bluey and Bingo both tore away from the soldiers and started barking as they moved between their friend and the bully Bulldog. Chili placed a hand on the girls' shoulders to calm them and looked back to Bandit, "I felt like it was the only way to protect my father. Please believe me."

Ar Fe scoffed and marched up to the captain of the group. He looked to the commanding officer and questioned, "Captain?"

The Blue Heeler looked to Chili who was still on her knees with both Bluey and Bingo standing in front of her. Bandit then looked to the advisor of the emperor before walking over to King. He pulled Chili's sword from it sheath. King neighed wildly and started to move to keep Bandit from hurting Chili. Both Mushu and Cri-Kee gasped at what could happen to their friend. Ar Fe was quick to order, "Restrain that horse!"

Two soldiers quickly came up and grabbed the horse's reins. Ar Fe then looked to another soldier or two and ordered, "Remove the young she-dogs!"

"No!" Both Bluey and Bingo cried before two soldiers quickly came in before pulling them back. The two girls tried to fight their way out again, but the soldiers' held them tight. They watched as Bandit continued his march up to Chili with the sword in one hand. Pat, Rad and Stripe moved to do something, but a raised paw from Ar Fe stopped them, "You all know the law."

He crossed his arms and everyone watched in anticipation of what Bandit was supposed to do. When Bandit stood before Chili he started to raise the sword. The two soldiers who held Bluey and Bingo gently moved their heads to where they wouldn't see anything. Bandit's gaze deepened a little while Chili closed her eyes and started to accept her fate. But Bandit simply threw the sword down and it landed on its side in the snow. Everyone looked in shock and surprise at the merciful act. Chili looked up and Bandit said, "A life for a life." He looked away and closed his eyes, "My debt is now been repaid."

Ar Fe looked in shock and Bandit turned to walk away. The Bulldog walked after him and the Blue Heeler ordered, "Move out, everyone!"

"But you can't just-" Ar Fe stuttered the protest and gestured to Chili. But Bandit grabbed the dog by the collar of his shirt and repeated the order, "I said, move out."

He released Ar Fe before continuing to his horse. Chili could only watch in shame as he continued to walk. One of the soldiers that held one of the young she-dogs questioned, "What about these two?"

"We want to stay with Chili." Bingo pleaded before ripping from the dog's arms. She ran over and hugged Chili's uninjured side. Even Bluey escaped from her hold and joined her sister. But Chili, not thinking it best, gently pushed the two away from her and said, "Go with the soldiers, girls."

"But-" The two young dogs started to protest. But Chili wouldn't have it as she said, "You'll be a lot safer with them."

Both Bluey and Bingo reluctantly stepped away from Chili and Pat, Rad and Stripe came to gently lead them away. Chili lowered her gaze and asked, "Please, take good care of them."

Stripe only gave her a silently nod and led the two away. They, Ar Fe and the other soldiers all filed behind Bandit as he headed down the pass again. Chili watched them go with sad eyes. When she was sure that they were gone, Chili got to work of gathering her things and making a small camp.

She put her shirt back on and huddled around a small fire made by Cri-Kee. King walked around her and placed the blanket from his back over her shoulders to keep her warm. He gave her a friendly nicker before setting himself down in the snow. Cri-Kee chirped when he shivered from the freezing cold. With a few short bounds he came into the blanket to try and get warm. Mushu, on the other hand, was currently walking around the snow-covered battlefield and picked up a broken Hun arrow. He sighed in disappointment, "Man, I was this close." He clenched his claws when he said, "This close to goin' and impressin' the ancestors, gettin' the top shelf, an entourage.

"Man. All my fine work." He scoffed and picked up an arrow head. He poked the tip a bit and then walked over to a bag of rations and used the tip of the arrow to jab a dumpling. Mushu turned to the fire and tried roasting it over the flames. But with such a small flame it would take a while. He glanced up at his charge and dejectedly said, "Hey."

"I should never left home." Chili shook her head, feeling really low. Mushu tried to make her see the nobleness of what she did by saying, "Hey now, come on. You went to go and save your father's life.

"Who knew that you'd go and end up shamin' him, disgracing your ancestors and losing all of your friends." He pinched the dumpling to see if dumpling had warmed up any, but was disappointed that it wasn't. Mushu placed the dumpling over the fire, but became discouraged when the flame went out. His lip trembled a little when he said, "You know, you just gotta… You just gotta learn to let these things go."

He sniffled but tried to keep himself from crying. Chili was thinking about it a little, and came to realize, "Maybe I didn't go just for my father.

"Maybe what I was really wanting was to prove that I could do things right," She picked up the helmet and looked in the reflection, "so that when I looked into the mirror, I'd see someone who was worthwhile."

Her gaze lowered when she thought of all the time that had passed. Tears flowed from her eyes when she couldn't see the person she was hoping for. With angry throw she said, "But I was wrong. I don't see anything!"

King, Mushu and Cri-Kee looked up to her as she wiped her eyes with a paw. The helmet landed in the snow and Mushu jumped a little. Mushu looked back to Chili and watched as she pulled the blanket tighter. Looking back to the dropped helmet, he picked it up and smiled when he tried to cheer her up, "Now, that's just 'cause this thing here needs a little spit shine, that's all.

"Let me shine this up here for ya." Mushu gave a small spit and rubbed it with his elbow. Then he held to her and his grin grew, "I can see you. Look at you. You look so pretty."

But Chili just looked away and Mushu's smile fell. Mushu the looked to his own reflection and decided to come clean about something. He shook his head when he revealed, "The truth here is, we're both a couple of frauds.

"See, your ancestors never sent me after you." He shook his head. The little dragon then got the gist, "They don't even like me."

He set the helmet down while Chili looked a little surprised to this. Mushu then pointed out, "I mean, you went and risked your life to help the people that you love.

"I risked your life only to help myself." He said when he gestured to himself. Then looking to her he said, "At least you had better intentions than I did."

Cri-Kee hopped up onto the helmet and looked down at his reflection. The little insect started to weep and said something through a few chirps. This surprised Mushu, "What?" He turned to the cricket and questioned, "What do you mean, 'You're not lucky'?"

Cri-Kee just looked to him and Mushu grabbed the small insect. The dragon looked hurt when he questioned, "You lied to me?"

Cri-Kee could only shake his head in shame with a chirp. Mushu dropped the bug and turned to King and angrily questioned, "And what are you? A sheep?"

King snorted in Mushu's face and the dragon grumbled in frustration. Chili sighed, "I guess I'll have to face my father sooner or later.

"Let's just go home." Chili cringed at the thought. Mushu took a deep breath and said, "Yeah, it's not gonna be pretty.

"But don't you worry, okay?" He said to reassure her. Mushu climbed up onto the helmet and tried to lift her spirits by saying, "Things will work themselves out.

"We went and started this thing together and that's how we'll finish it." He said and gently cupped his chin with his claws. Mushu and Chili smiled before embracing each other. The dragon patted the Red Heeler's back and vowed, "I promise."

"Thank you, Mushu." Chili said and rose from the snow. Mushu hopped off the helmet and they started to pack up. Unaware by any of them, a shape flew over them.

Mulan: I feel like that this chapter could have been a bit better. I mean, it wasn't too bad, I just felt like it needed a little more.

Chili: Well, the author is doing his best.

TheWriterForGod42: Thank you, Chili. As for the next chapter, it'll be pretty short. Then we get to the most action part of the story.
