Chapter 13 – The Morning
Kurt woke up early by the sound of rain lightly tapping on the window. Gray, hazy light filtered in through the window and Kurt stretched at little where he lay. Kurt loved the sound of rain against a window. He'd always found it soothing. Even as a child he didn't mind waking up in the middle of the night when rain clouds passed by. He would just lay there and listen while peacefulness settled in his body. This morning, however, the rain wasn't his only reason for lying there and not getting up. His back was aching a little from the strange position he'd slept in, but Kurt didn't mind. Blaine was still there.
Kurt had slept all night next to Blaine, curled up on the couch, sharing the same blanket. It might be one of the coziest things Kurt had experienced, even if his body hurt. Blaine was still asleep, and Kurt didn't want to wake him or get up, he was content just lying there listening to the rain and Blaine's even breathing.
The feeling growing inside of him, it was special. It was love. It had to be. Kurt had never felt anything close to this. He'd never slept on a couch before, could never have imagined choosing a couch over his bed, but last night there were no other place he'd rather sleep. He wouldn't tell Blaine, not for a long time, but when he did, he would tell him about this morning, when he knew for sure there was no turning back. He knew he'd get a chance to tell Blaine when the time was right because Blaine was planning on sticking around, he'd said so himself last night. The idea of Blaine committing to them still made Kurt giddy and like he was on cloud nine. It was too soon to tell of course, but Blaine might be it.
Soon the need to use the bathroom became too urgent and without waking Blaine up, Kurt slid off the couch. He readjusted the blanket on Blaine and then tiptoed across the room to the bathroom. He looked at himself in the mirror. His hair was sticking up on one side from sleeping on Blaine's chest, but the thing Kurt noticed about himself was the smile on his lips he couldn't erase. Being in love did that to him.
When Kurt was finished, including fixing his hair back to a somewhat normal hairstyle, he returned to the living room. Blaine was still asleep so Kurt headed to the kitchen and started to make coffee. He poured himself a big mug, went back to the couch and put the mug down next to the untouched mugs of tea from last night. He collected a book and another blanket from his bedroom and settled down in the opposite corner from Blaine on the couch. He didn't have the heart to wake him up even if he wanted nothing more than to kiss him.
Kurt started reading but his mind kept drifting to Blaine and the night before. Blaine was becoming less of an enigma to him, and he now understood the two personalities Blaine used to be around him. Devon was the guy who put up barriers around his heart so he could be reckless and get what he wanted without a care in the world. Devon was crude, cocky and confident. Blaine was heartful, honest and humble. Blaine was so easy to love even when he got insecure and especially when he showed his vulnerability.
Blaine had opened up to him like a spring bud, slowly revealing the beauty inside, and Kurt promised himself he would take care of him and nourish him so he might bloom and show the world all of his beauty. So that one day everyone could see his true self. Kurt was going to be a part of that journey, no matter how long or winding the road was.
Blaine stirred on the couch and Kurt looked up from the book he wasn't reading. Blaine looked peaceful and beautiful where he lay. Somehow Blaine had gone from hot to beautiful in Kurt's eyes, but he guessed that had to do with the Devon/Blaine thing. Blaine stretched a little, blinked his eyes open and then sat up with a jolt. He scrambled out of the blanket, stood up and looked around the room with wild eyes.
"Blaine?" Kurt said softly, bringing Blaine's attention to him. It was clear Blaine didn't recognize where he was and his reaction to that surprised Kurt a little bit.
Blaine turned to look in the direction of Kurt's voice and when his eyes landed on Kurt, Kurt could see him transform. Blaine's whole body relaxed, recognition finally in his eyes, and he dropped down on the couch again.
"Blue-eyes," Blaine exhaled.
"Yes, you're still at my place," Kurt answered and closed his book. "You looked a little lost there for a while."
"What time is it?" Blaine asked, ignoring Kurt's comment.
"It's morning, you fell asleep during the movie last night and I didn't have the heart to wake you up, so I let you sleep on my couch. I hope that was okay."
Blaine hummed and nodded slowly, as if he was still taking it in. He looked around the apartment again before his eyes landed on Kurt. "Where did you sleep?"
"I slept in my bed if the idea of me also sleeping on the couch next to you makes you uncomfortable," Kurt said, gauging Blaine's reaction. Last night he'd felt that he'd gotten closer to Blaine, gotten to know him better, but Blaine's reaction to waking up in a strange place had thrown Kurt a little bit. Still, he tried to get back to that light, teasing mood he liked between them.
"And if it doesn't?" Blaine asked, that glint of mischief back in his eyes.
"Then I slept next to you, unable to let that opportunity pass me by," Kurt smiled.
"Come here," Blaine beckoned, biting his lower lip.
Kurt let the book slide to the floor and happily moved over to Blaine's end of the couch.
"You're just the sweetest thing," Blaine said when Kurt was close. He cupped Kurt's cheeks and pulled him in for a kiss, not caring about morning breath.
Kurt didn't care either, he was too busy having his mind spinning for that. The kiss was deep and intense, the kind only shared between two people in love who doesn't know or doesn't dare to express that feeling in any other way.
Blaine's eyes were a different kind of wild when they pulled apart, almost black in the way they only turned when Blaine wanted him. Kurt had seen them like that before, on the beach and on the boat. And almost every time they kissed.
"I think I need to use the bathroom," Blaine said hoarsely.
"It's over there," Kurt smiled and pointed behind himself without looking. He was too occupied being mesmerized by Blaine.
"I'll be right back." Blaine placed a quick peck on Kurt's lips and then slid away from Kurt, leaving Kurt hovering over the empty place where Blaine used to sit.
Kurt sat back on the couch, leaning against the backrest. "There's coffee in the kitchen when you're done," he called after Blaine just as the bathroom door closed. Kurt closed his eyes, left wondering if Blaine needed to relieve himself in more than one way because he was sure he wasn't the only one feeling the intensity of that kiss. He took a few calming breaths, letting his pulse return to normal.
Blaine returned a few moments later and went to the kitchen. Kurt instructed him where to find a mug and then Blaine was back on the couch, holding the mug between both hands as he tasted the dark liquid.
"Mmm, this is good."
"I was hoping you'd like it so that maybe you'd want to come back here too and not just the diner."
"It was never about the coffee," Blaine said and leaned forward. "Actually, the coffee there is quite bad. The diner has other, better, qualities."
"You always have the right answers," Kurt said and took another sip of his coffee.
"Far from it," Blaine chuckled. "I don't have the answers to anything, but you bring out this cheesy side of me I'm not used to."
"It must be because you're impossibly drawn to me," Kurt teased, echoing Blaine's words from a few nights before.
"Hey, don't make fun of me," Blaine answered, hiding a smile behind a pout.
"Not making fun of you, sweetie. Just stating facts."
"Well, if it's facts, I can't think of another explanation," Blaine said, unable to hide his smile any longer.
Kurt couldn't stop himself from leaning forward and meet Blaine in a kiss. Oh God, he loved this side of their relationship, when it was fun and easy. Throw in a little bit of heart flutter and some giddy butterflies and this was how Kurt wanted to spend his days from now forward.
"What are your plans for today?" Kurt asked when he'd settled in next to Blaine and Blaine had put his arm around Kurt's shoulder.
"I'm meeting up with my friends later on, but you are also seeing your friends. You're going out tonight, right?"
"Any thoughts on that?" Kurt asked.
"Just stay like sixty feet away from other guys and I have nothing to add."
"Are you a jealous guy, Blaine?" Kurt asked, sliding his fingers teasingly down Blaine's thigh.
"Never."
"Good, because Santana coaxed me into going to some gay bar and it will be pretty hard not get close to other guys."
"You're going to a gay bar?!" It didn't sound like Blaine never got jealous.
"It wasn't my idea and I said yes to it before this happened," Kurt said and pointed between them. "But you know you have nothing to worry about, right?" Kurt turned his face a little to look at Blaine.
"I don't," Blaine answered seriously. "You're a very attractive guy, Kurt. It's not like they're going to let you stand alone in a corner unnoticed. Guys will be all over you."
Kurt laughed at that. "I'll let you know that guys have never been all over me. And even if they were, I'm off the market."
"You're damn right you are, blue-eyes." Blaine closed the conversation with a possessive kiss that quite literally took Kurt's breath away.
Kurt clutched his mug with both hands both because he didn't want to spill the hot coffee but also because he needed something to hold on to while Blaine kissed him like he'd never kissed Kurt before. "Wow," Kurt said, catching his breath afterwards.
"I'm going to use your shower," Blaine said after moments of silence where they let that kiss sink in. "It will be nice to not have to use the shower at the harbor officer for a change."
"Go ahead." Not having your own shower was something Kurt couldn't imagine, and he'd never realized until now what a luxury that was for some. "There are towels in the cabinet beside the sink."
When Blaine was out of sight Kurt curled up in the corner where Blaine had slept. He pulled up his legs and hugged a throw pillow, wondering how he got so lucky. He was ridiculously happy. Being with Blaine was the best feeling Kurt had ever experienced. He was different from the guys Kurt had dated in the past. Sure, their relationship was still new, but Kurt knew that he'd never have a dull moment with Blaine. The attraction between them was unmistakable and Kurt had been frustratingly turned on with no release more times in the past twelve hours than he'd remembered ever being. But he liked it. Liked the electricity between them, the teasing and the buildup. He respected Blaine's wish to take it slow, but the way Blaine kissed him, Kurt wondered how long he'd be able to keep respecting it.
The phone Kurt left screen down on the coffee table last night started to ring at the same time Kurt heard the shower being turned on. He knew who it was before he looked at the screen.
"Good morning, dad," Kurt answered. His dad had the habit of calling him every Saturday morning. Even if Kurt had told him it wasn't the best of times to call, Burt persistently called him that time anyway.
"Someone is unusually cheerful for a Saturday morning," Burt commented.
"It's just nice to hear your voice."
"Ha, that's a new one. How are you doing, kiddo?"
"Just fine, dad. It's actually raining today so maybe I don't have to put up with that damp heat for once."
"I know you don't like what it does to your hair for some reason, so I guess that's a good thing," Burt said with a voice that said that Kurt cared more about his hair than was necessary. Burt wasn't one who cared much about appearance, what was inside mattered more to him. "How's it going with the internship? You learning anything or are they using you to make coffee?"
Burt chuckled but Kurt swallowed hard. He still hadn't told his dad there was no internship, that he was working at a diner instead because he was too embarrassed to admit he had messed up and missed the application deadline. He didn't think he needed to send in an application since he had already cleared the internship with his supposed to be boss, but apparently they didn't accept any internships without that damn application. With no exceptions. Kurt had tried to reason with them but all he got was a firm no and a 'you're welcome to submit your application next year'.
"It's going good, Dad," Kurt lied. "And I'm not only making coffee." That was true. He was serving food as well…
"Good. Listen, me and Carole are thinking of making a trip down south and visit you in two weeks. Maybe you can show us around the big publishing house then."
"You're coming here?" Kurt's excitement was real. He missed his dad most of all since he moved from Lima and seeing him again would be amazing. His excitement faltered a little though when he realized two weeks was soon and he'd had to figure out a way to tell him the truth. "In two weeks?"
"If you're not busy that weekend," Burt said. "We're thinking of maybe driving, making a road trip out of it. Carole has a cousin in North Carolina and an aunt in Georgia that we plan on visiting on the way as well."
"No, I'm not busy," Kurt said without thinking too much about his reasons for not telling his dad the truth. "I can't believe you're driving all the way to Florida, it's such a long way. But I'm excited to see you! I don't know if the publishing house allows me to bring visitors inside, but I can show you the building and also the rest of the city." Kurt wasn't sure why he kept lying about his internship, but it seemed he couldn't stop himself.
"Great, then it's decided! Carole is going to be thrilled when I tell her."
"Kurt, I borrowed your shampoo, I hope you don't mind. It smelled so good on you last night!" Blaine walked back into the room from the bathroom and Kurt had almost forgotten he was there in the excitement to find out his dad was coming for a visit.
Kurt gestured to Blaine that he was on the phone and that Blaine should be quiet. Blaine made an apologetic gesture in return and pulled his fingers across his lips as if he was zipping them close.
"Oh, you have company," Burt said, sounding surprised.
"Ehm… yes." Kurt couldn't exactly lie and say no, his dad must have heard Blaine's voice through the phone, but it was too soon to tell him about Blaine.
"At this hour? Someone special?" Of course no one could fool Burt Hummel when it came to these things, least of all his own son.
"It's too early to say," Kurt offered, hoping that would be enough for his dad to drop the conversation.
It wasn't.
"I'm assuming he spent the night since he's used your shower."
"Dad! Oh God…" Kurt wanted to sink through the couch and disappear. It wouldn't matter how old he got, this would never be a topic of conversation he'd be comfortable having with his dad. Now, because Blaine took a morning shower, Burt would assume that they'd… Kurt didn't want to think about it.
"I've been young once, too, Kurt. I've had my share of casual relationships or whatever you call it nowadays. It's normal, nothing to feel embarrassed about."
"It's not like that."
"No, of course it isn't," Burt chuckled. "But if he turns out to be someone special, Carole and I would be delighted to meet him when we come to visit. What's his name?"
"Okay, Dad, that's enough of that."
Burt only laughed in response. He could most likely tell from Kurt's evasive answers that the guy in his apartment was someone special, he knew Kurt better than anyone, but Kurt wasn't willing to tell him more now with Blaine present, listening in on Kurt's part of the conversation.
They talked for a few minutes more before Kurt excused himself, saying he didn't want to be rude to his guest by being on the phone, and they ended the call. Blaine was lingering in the kitchen, leaning against the counter, and reading a fashion magazine while pretending not to listen. Kurt got off the couch and walked the few steps to the kitchen area. He snitched the magazine out of Blaine's hands, placed it on the counter, stepped right into Blaine's space and sneaked his arms around Blaine's waist.
Blaine straight out of the shower was a gorgeous sight, one that reminded Kurt of their night on the beach. Wet curls falling over his forehead and a naked body with lean muscles. Not that Blaine was naked now, but that was the image that was on Kurt's mind anyhow.
"Was that your dad?" Blaine asked as he wrapped his arms around Kurt's waist too.
Kurt nodded. "Mm-hmm." Blaine's arms around him were nice and warm and Kurt leaned into Blaine a little bit. He kept his eyes connected with Blaine's, their faces so close he could feel Blaine's breath on his lips as he spoke.
"Did he hear me? Did you talk about me?"
"He did, but I didn't tell him anything about us. He's pretty quick to pick up on the smallest of signals though," Kurt explained. "He wants to meet you, he's coming to visit in two weeks."
Blaine stared back at Kurt, eyes wide. "Meeting the parents? Isn't that a little bit too soon?"
"Of course it is," Kurt answered because he could feel how tense Blaine had become. Yes, it was too soon, but the thought of Burt meeting Blaine was there now, and Kurt would be lying to himself if he said he didn't want that to happen. But it was too early in their relationship for that. "We're taking it slow, and you meeting my dad now would not be taking things slow. Dad was just teasing me about having a guest this early on a Saturday morning," Kurt said even though it was only partly true.
"Oh, okay," Blaine exhaled, his body going soft in Kurt's arms again.
"You don't have to look so scared, Blaine," Kurt said tenderly. "My dad is nice and I'm sure he would like you."
"I don't know about that."
"What's not to like?" Kurt smiled.
"Want me to make a list?" Blaine scoffed.
"I don't need a list to know that you're sweet and generous to me. Or that you're a little bit scared but that you're willing to take a chance on us because the alternative might be scarier. Or that your kisses make my knees weak and my heart fluttery."
Blaine stared speechless at Kurt for a few seconds. Then his face broke out in a smile. "You feel like a luxury I'm not entitled to have."
Kurt didn't know what to say to that, but this warm, fuzzy feeling settled in his chest. Blaine was still thinking he wasn't boyfriend material or fit for a relationship, or worthy of Kurt's love, but if he would have said it right then Kurt would have protested wildly. Sure, Blaine was a little insecure at times but the way he made Kurt feel, like Kurt was precious and invaluable, no other guy had ever done that.
Kurt didn't have to say anything though because Blaine followed his words with a long, fervent kiss. A kiss that definitely made Kurt's knees weak, one that made his hold around Blaine's waist tighten because if he didn't hold on, he would surely not be able to stand up.
When Blaine pulled back, Kurt's brain was dizzy from lack of oxygen, and his breathing strained. "We… we should have breakfast," Kurt croaked hoarsely. It was the only thing he could think to say, all other thoughts had fled his brain.
Blaine smiled. "I'm only hungry for your kisses."
