The Letter

Wallace (Wally) West (Kid Flash/KF), had been living with his Aunt Iris West-Allan and his absent mind Uncle Barry Allan (The Flash) since he got his powers at the age of ten, that was six years ago Wally was now 16-years-old. In truth, they had saved him from his abusive alcoholic parents and adopted him. Wally raced down the passage, to where his Uncle was sorting through the mail. His Aunt stuck her head around the corner saying "Wally, dear, no powers in the house." "Yes, Aunt Iris" Wally whined, "but Uncle Barry is taking so long!" Wally heard his Uncle give an amused chuckle. Wally was impatient to see his best friends, 18-year-old Roy Harper (Red Arrow) and 14-year-old Richard (Dick) Grayson (Robin). "Barry, Wally is right, what's the hold up?" Iris asked. Barry showed Iris an official letter, according to this, I have a cousin, I have never met, and who was murdered alongside her husband. Apparently she has a daughter, and I am her only living relative. She will be arriving tomorrow. Both Iris and Wally looked nonplussed. "How is she arriving?" Iris asked uncertainly, "By plane." Barry said shortly. "How old is she, and what is her name? Wally asked equally uncertainly. "The letter says she is 15-years-old and her name is Phoebe Holmes. Come on kid, we will worry about this tomorrow time to go, I bet your friends are wondering where you are."

Wally was busy explaining to Dick and Roy why he was late. "So Uncle Barry received a letter about a cousin who he never met who died, and now he is the legal guardian of her daughter." "I can look into it if you like." Dick suggested pulling out his laptop, trying to alleviate Wally's worries. "If you want to go on patrol with me you need to make it quick." Roy said impatiently "Chillax," Dick said, giving his signature smirk, "This won't take long." Roy just rolled his eyes. "Ok. It says here, her parents were murdered by two members of the Sanchez family." "Sanchez family?" Wally asked startled. "A week and half later they were arrested," Dick continued, clearly shaken. "Then the evidence disappeared and two day later the suspects were found dead in some cheap motel." "Where was this Phoebe chick?" Roy asked, taking interest. "Foster care. That was until they tracked Barry Allan down has her closest relative." Dick answered. "I suggest we keep a close eye on her, now let's go." Roy ordered.

Phoebe Holmes

Wally raced to the front door as he heard it open, he saw his Uncle speaking to a girl with shoulder long mousy brown hair and brown eyes. "I told you Phoebe," Barry said exasperated, "You don't have to call me Mr Allan, we're family." Just then, Barry spotted Wally, "Uncle Barry, Aunt Iris asked me to let you know lunch is ready." "Phoebe, you can go with Wally. I will take your suitcase to your room." Barry instructed. Phoebe gave a thoughtful look between Wally and Barry before saying, "Ok, Uncle Barry." The two teens went to the kitchen, leaving a surprised Barry behind.

Iris turned around as she heard them enter the kitchen, "You must be Phoebe Holmes. I am Iris West-Allen." Iris smiled as she greeted the girl in front of her. Phoebe waved shyly and said, "Hi, Aunt Iris." "I see you meet my nephew, Wally," Iris said as Barry walked into the kitchen. "So tell us about yourself. What are your favourite subjects at school?" Barry asked, trying to get a conversation going. "Well, I am good at maths and science, but history is my favourite subject." Phoebe answered with a weary look. "Really!" Wally said, looking excited, "I love maths and science! You should totally join the science club with me! Are you into robotics?" Phoebe looked taken aback at Wally's enthusiasm. "Easy there kid," Barry said chuckling, causing Wally to pout. "You don't think I am wired." Phoebe asked, looking genuinely shocked. "Why would we think that?" Iris asked, quirking an eyebrow, exchanging a surprised look with her husband. Phoebe looked downcast and said, "My parents thought those subjects are useless, they said I should focus on business studies." "We will never think that," Barry said, putting a gentle hand on her shoulder. After lunch, they showed Phoebe her room, "We getting furniture for your room on the weekend." Iris said in an apologetic tone. "That's ok," Phoebe said with a sad smile, "When they asked if I wanted to keep anything before they sold everything, I just said the furniture from my room. I believe it's arriving tomorrow." Wally saw his Aunt and Uncle exchange a surprised look before he jumped in and said, "Why don't I show you around the neighbourhood?" Phoebe followed Wally down the passage.

Later that evening, Phoebe checked her emails on her phone, her laptop would be arriving tomorrow. The email simply stated, 'I will find you and when I do, you will pay with your life.' Phoebe just rolled her eyes, deleting the message. She shuddered as she remembered finding her parents lifeless bodies, they had been shot execution style. Her parents might not have wanted her or cared for her, but it still didn't stop Phoebe from blaming herself for their deaths.

Misleading

Phoebe and Wally were on their way home after Robotics Club, when they were stopped by the school bully, Wilkinson. "Beat it girly!" Wilkinson said, sneering in his usual conceited way, "This is between carrot top and me. He didn't do my science project and cost me my place on the football team." Wilkinson punched Wally in the face sending him flying against the wall, despite been a speedster Wally was forbidden from using his speed at school. "I am just getting warmed up," Wilkinson said moving to Wally punching his meaty fist in his hand, but before he could hit Wally, Phoebe stepped in front of him saying in a cold voice, "I suggest you leave my cousin alone." This caused the bully to laugh in a condescending way. "This loser, have family? Please, you're making me laugh. His own family didn't want him!" He tried to around her, but Phoebe was too fast and grabbed his arm, Wilkinson cried out in pain as the three of them heard a nasty snap. Phoebe stood on his broken arm, causing the bully to cry out even more pain. "If I see you go anywhere near my family, you will pay," she threatened. She then turned to Wally and asked in a concerned tone, "Are you ok?" "How did you do that?" Wally asked in awe, wiping some blood away from his nose. "I had someone teach my how to fight, when my parents were at work," she answered vaguely and changing the subject, she simply said, "Let's go home."

Unfortunately for Wally, Barry had been given a half day at the CCPD, "What happened to your eye? Why is there blood on your face?" Barry asked, going into full mother hen mode. "I am fine, Uncle Barry!" Wally said, pushing Barry away from him. Barry then turned to Phoebe and asked anxiously, "Did you see what happened?" Wally panicked and indicated to Phoebe from behind Barry's back not to say anything, Phoebe expression changed to fear, which made Wally blink in surprise. "Well… Uncle Barry," she said sadly, "It's my fault, Wally was just defending me. This guy with a mask on came out of nowhere and tried to grab my bag." Phoebe contained looking at that floor in shame, Wally looked on in amazement. He couldn't believe his Uncle was fulling for this story. "Wally grabbed the bag and I kicked the guy in the groin area, causing him to let go of the bag, which resulted in Wally getting hit in the face." By the end of the tale, Phoebe had crocodile tears running down her face and only Wally knew it was all an act. "That was very brave of you kid," Barry said, turning to his nephew, "I am very proud of you." Wally didn't know what to say, so all he did was nod. "And Phoebe," Barry said in a gentle voice, "No one blames you, it was a circumstance of unfortunate events." He then turned to Wally and said, "Don't forget Dick is expecting you tonight", secretly reminding him he had training with Batman (Bruce Wayne) and Robin. "Once you've washed up, you can go." "How did you do that?" Wally asked Phoebe curiously, "Do what?" Phoebe asked, raising an eyebrow. "That thing!" Wally said in frustration. Phoebe just shrugged, she was about to go in her room when Wally add in a sincere tone, "Thanks for saving my butt back there." Phoebe just smiled, saying, "That's what family is for."

Batman had given Kid Flash and Robin a five-minute break from training so KF could fuel up. Robin was not immune to bullies in his civilian identify, so he understood what KF was going through. "So she broke his arm like it was nothing and this guy is a football player! She even fooled Uncle Barry into thinking it was a mugging gone wrong, just to explain my black eye!" Robin drank his water thoughtfully looking at the floor, "It does seem suspicions," he said rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "I think it's about time we paid you a visit, and I find out what secrets, Miss Holmes is hiding on her laptop." Robin said grinning just as Batman called them back to training.

At the same time Phoebe had received another email saying "I know where you are. You don't want what happened to your parents to happen to the Allan Family." She just smiled scoffing at the email, this time she had the upper hand. Besides the Allan Family weren't what they appeared to be. She began tracking the sender.

The Owl

Just as Robin had promised he turned up at Wally's house on Saturday with Roy. "These are my two best friends Roy Harper and Dick Grayson," Wally said introducing his friends to Phoebe. "Nice to meet you," she said, Dick was his usual charming self, while Roy merely grunted. The four of them had been playing Mario Go Kart for over an hour, drinking cola and snaking on chips when Dick got up and excused himself to use the bathroom. "That's cool," Phoebe said beating Roy at Mario Go Kart. He sneaked into Phoebe's bedroom, seeing her laptop on her desk, he used his wrist computer to hack into her laptop. "Boring," Dick thought as he scrolled through the folders, he paused when he came to encrypted folders. "Let's see what you're hiding," he muttered to himself cracking his knuckles. He was halfway in when an Owl appeared on his screen and a virus began downloading on his wrist computer, he disconnected his wrist computer, but it was too late. "Oh shit," he groaned, "How I am going to explain this to Batman?"

"How are you this good?" Roy asked frustrated, he clearly hated losing. "What can I say," Phoebe said smirking, "I am just naturally talented." This caused Roy to scowl and mutter sarcastically "Don't forget modest too." This caused both Wally and Phoebe to burst out laughing. Phoebe noticed an alert on her phone indicating someone was hacking her laptop, she mentally cackled knowing who it was. Causing herself to accidentally on purpose to lose the game, she said "Dam! Looks like it's your turn Wally!" "Finally!" Roy huffed "I didn't think I was ever going to win!" As she swapped places with Wally, she connected remotely to her laptop and watched the intruder go through the files, while slowly sending a virus from her end. "Hopefully you will learn not to mess with a master!" she thought snickering to herself. Now all she had to do was wait. Dick came back just as Roy lost the game. "Wally," he said "You promised you would help me with my maths homework." Both Wally's and Roy's eyes widen at this they both knew that Dick was a maths genius and must have found a clue. "I will clean up this mess," Phoebe said "You three go do whatever you need to do."

"What did you find out?" Roy asked impatiently leaning against Wally's cupboard door. "It's her!" Robin said in excitement and started pacing the floor. "She is The Owl!" "The who?" Both Roy and Wally asked in a confused tone and with blank expressions. "The Owl! The only most notorious computer hacker in the world! The most wanted!" Dick said with enthusiasm, "To most hackers The Owl is a myth, but now…" "Are you sure?" Roy asked now standing up straight, eyes narrowed deep in thought. "Absolutely! Just before my wrist computer crashed and burned a picture of a tiny owl appeared." Dick said firmly. "Should we confront her?" Wally asked looking between Dick and Roy. "No. Not yet," Roy said grimly, "Not until we have concert evidence."

Kidnapped

Phoebe was sitting at her laptop doing her homework, she was waiting for Wally to get back home, when her phone rang. She answered without checking the number, "Why if it isn't my old friend, The Owl," the mysteries voice greeted in a sinister way. "What do want Sanchez?" Phoebe snarled into the phone. It was the oldest Sanchez brother, William. "You killed my brothers, I believe it's time to return the favour. I have two members of the family you're using as a cover, your so-called Aunt Iris and so-called cousin Wally, I will send you an address. Come alone or else. He said menacingly dropping the call. All Phoebe could was growl in frustration knowing what she had to do.

Red Arrow was on a stake out, he had received a tip that Brick was plaining on bringing a large shipment of illegal weapons into the country. Red Arrow had asked Robin for his assistance he would have asked Kid Flash too, but he couldn't get hold of him, so he just assumed he was doing something with The Flash and couldn't answer his commlink. "I have eyes on the target," Robin said interrupting Red Arrow's train of thought, "He is on the move." "You take the goons out," he said harshly, "Brick is mine." Robin gave his signature cackle and was gone before Red Arrow could blink. Robin threw tear gas in the directions of the three goons, causing them to cough and tear up. Robin cackled again running across the room with his Escrima sticks, knocking the first goon out. "I am going to get you puck!" The goon said swinging and missing, "You wish!" Robin said cackling again, the goon swung in the direction of Robin's voice, but Robin just backflipped out of the way causing goon no.2 to be punched in the face. "Let's end this!" Robin said smirking. "I see you had fun," Red Arrow said in an amused voice once all three goons had been knocked out, tied up and Brick taken care of. Just then Robin's phone rang it was Wally. "About time KF! We have been trying to get hold of you, you missed out on some kick ass action!" "It's not Kid Flash, it's me, Phoebe. Wally and Iris have been kidnapped by the eldest Sanchez brother. I need your and Red Arrow's or should I say Roy's help in getting them back."

Truth Revealed

They meet in the wealthy area of Central City, in an empty house that had been just been put on the market. Red Arrow slammed Phoebe against the wall. "Talk!" he said angrily, pining her against the wall at eye level. "Let her down," Robin said glaring at her. Red Arrow dropped her, she fell to her knees coughing, rubbing her throat. Robin pointed one of his of Escrima sticks at Phoebe's throat and said coldly, "You heard, Red Arrow. Talk." "There is not enough time!" Phoebe said in desperation, "I swear I will explain everything once we get them back, but all you need to know for now, is yes I am Phoebe Holmes and the computer hacker The Owl." "You had better." Red Arrow said threateningly, helping her up. "So what's the plan?" Robin asked "I will distract them by going in the front, one of you can go in the back door and the other through the basement." "If you betray us," Robin said narrowing his eyes, "We will find you."

Barry was working a particular difficult case when an alert come through on his phone, "What trouble have you got yourself into now Iris," he thought anxiously. Making an excuse he left the room to go and rescue Iris.

What was a regular shopping trip for Iris and Wally turned into a kidnapping nightmare. They were tided back to back enabling Wally to press the side of Iris's watch alerting The Flash to their predicament. "What do you want with us?" Iris cried out in frustration, as Sanchez entered the lounge. "If it's The Flash, it won't work. I am not the only reporter he does interviews with." "Not everything is about The Flash my dear," Sanchez said smirking, "This is about revenge." "What are you talking about?" Wally asked feigning ignorance. "Of course Phoebe wouldn't have told you the truth, she is an excellent liar and hacker." Sanchez said continuing to smirk. "What are you talking about?" Iris asked genuinely confused. "My dear Phoebe Holmes or her mother is not related to your husband in anyway, she was just using your family as a cover till she could find something better." Iris gasped in shock and disbelief. "She killed my brothers," Sanchez said grimly "And now she gets to watch you die." "You won't get away with this!" Wally said frustrated that he couldn't use his speed knowing that he might give The Flash's civilian identity away. "I just did." Sanchez said with a dismissive wave leaving his goons to guard them.

Wally was struggling with the rope trying to free himself and his Aunt, when he heard someone been dragged into the room. "Look who's finally decided to join us," Sanchez said throwing Phoebe on the floor, kicking her in the stomach causing her to flinch in pain. "Leave her alone!" Iris cried out, clearly worried about the teen. "I am ok, Aunt Iris," Phoebe said using the chair to help herself up. "You going to pay Sanchez." Phoebe said calmly. Just as Sanchez punched Phoebe in the face, Robin and Red Arrow came bursting in the room knocking the goons out, The Flash followed after and ran to Iris and Wally. Phoebe picked up a gun and shoot Sanchez in the knee. The Flash was in the process of untying Wally and Iris, when Red Arrow noticed Phoebe had a gun pointed towards Sanchez head and was been egged on to shoot him. He slung his arrow over his shoulder and said gently, "Phoebe, he's not worth it. Every time you kill someone a piece of you dies. Trust me I know." Everybody held their breath, when suddenly she dropped the gun sobbing. Iris ran to her and embraced her rubbing her back soothingly, whispering, "It's going to be ok, I promise," while this was going on no one had noticed one of the goons had regained consciousness and had made his way to the kitchen, using some chemicals from under the kitchen sink and starting a fire, that spread quickly. Just then The Flash burst through the door. "You two take Wally, Iris and Phoebe and get out, I will take care of Sanchez and his goons." Red Arrow and Robin led them out, while The Flash spun his arms in circles putting the fire out.

Now What?

Once they had given their statements and been cleared by the paramedics, they were all sitting in Allen lounge in civilian attire. "You owe us an exclamation." Barry said gravely. "The only time my parents noticed me, was when they need me to make themselves look good. So I started computer hacking, becoming The Owl. Just small things at first. Answer sheets for jocks." Phoebe took a shaky breath before continuing. "Then I got noticed by bigger players. They wanted inside info on their competition." This caused Dick to frown wondering if she wasn't responsible for the leaked info from Wayne Enterprises. "In the back of my mind I knew it was wrong, but for the first time I was getting the validation I wanted from my parents." Iris went and sat next to her putting a comforting arm around her. "Then the Sanchez family noticed me. At first, it was just moving money around than…" Phoebe shuddered. "It's ok." Wally said smiling gently. "They asked me to hack into the F.B.I. database to track down family members who were going to talk. They even asked me to hack into the JLA database, so they could sell your identities, but I lied and said it was impossible." "That would explain how you know our secret identities," Roy muttered, "but why did you lie?" he asked. "The world needs heroes, I don't have the right to take that away." Phoebe simply answered. "Please continue." Dick interjected. "The Sanchez family wanted me to hack into the USA Armed Forces, they wanted the codes to the nuclear weapons. I refused." Everyone gasped as in shock, as Phoebe continued. "They said, I would be sorry, they killed my parents, so when the evidence dispersed. I killed them." By this Iris was holding tightly on to the girl. "I am sorry for what I did, I thought your family would be the perfect cover, just till I could set up my new identity. I didn't mean for this to happen. I will be gone in the morning." "So that's it? Are you just going to leave?" Wally asked harshly. "What else I am I meant to do?" Phoebe said sadly, wiping tears from her face, "Let you all die?" Everyone just gave her a blank look, she was about to leave the room, when she was stopped by Barry, who said with a caring smile "You can stay, we might not be related by blood, but to us, you're still family." "You want me to stay?" Phoebe asked sceptically, "Of course we do!" Wally said exasperatedly. "We love you," Iris said. Roy and Dick left as Barry, Iris, Wally and Phoebe came together in a family hug.
