CHAPTER 3
It was a bit awkward at first to have Dimitri in my house. But nothing compared to level of awkward that came from Alec passing by my line of sight every so often. I had nestled myself comfortably on my couch with Dimitri on my right. Harlow had made a large pitcher of fruity mixed drinks that all us girls were enjoying while the guys were split between holding cans of beer or glasses of bourbon or whiskey. Dimitri had opted for a glass of bourbon himself, and it didn't really surprise me. He was a refined gentlemen after all.
I took a sip of my drink and let the taste of strawberry fill my mouth. I giggled at the mental image I conjured up in my mind about how silly it would look if Dimitri were the one sipping on this fruity drink instead of myself. Yeah, right, I thought to myself. He'd probably still look like the Russian tongued Greek god that he was either way. My eyes drifted over to Dimitri again and I couldn't help the silly grin that plastered its way across my face.
"What are you thinking about, Miss Bella?" he whispered into my ear, causing me to dissolve further into my fit of giggles. I just shook my head. There was no way I was going to tell him that I couldn't stop picturing him with a small glass of some pink fruity drink topped with sliced up strawberries. That and the fact that the image in my head still looked pretty damn good. "Why do I get the feeling that you're lying to me? I'm hurt." There was a playfulness in his voice that was infectious. Music was playing in the background and the lyrics to my favorite song drifted to me.
I feel so close to you right now it's a force field.
"I'll never tell." I said in a sing-song voice, leaning into him further, resting my cheek on his shoulder and closing my eyes, my head feeling dizzier than when we had left the bar.
"Mm, Bella. I think you've about had it for the night, dear." Dimitri breathed, and I cracked my eyes open just wide enough to see Alec staring at me. He was standing in the kitchen on the other side of the island, both hands planted on the island's surface with an expression I couldn't quite discern in my current state. I wonder where Aubrey had taken off to. She hadn't peeled herself from his side since we left the club a few hours ago. He'd probably already got what he wanted and sent her away. Typical Alec.
"I think you're probably right." I said, not breaking eye contact with Alec until I turned my face up to Dimitri. His electric blue met my brown and I could feel myself melting from the inside out again. "Help me to bed?" I whispered.
And there's no stopping us right now.
"Of course, I'll be right back." Dimitri said, placing a quick kiss on my cheek before sliding off the couch and scooping up our glasses. I watched as he made his way into the kitchen and maneuvered around Alec to set the glasses down in the sink. I felt my heart skip a beat as Alec's head turned ever so slightly in Dimitri's direction, Dimitri himself didn't catch it.
"Do you know which room is Bella's by any chance?" I heard Dimitri ask as he turned around from the sink to look at Alec.
"Belle." Alec snapped.
"Pardon me?" Dimitri's eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"Her name is Belle, not Bella."
"Ah, I'm sorry for the confusion. I just prefer Bella. It means beautiful, quite fitting don't you think?" came Dimitri's perfect response.
"Up the stairs, second door on the right." Alec grunted and pushed himself off the island and walked away.
"Not very friendly, is he?" Dimitri laughed as he walked back towards me. "Don't go falling asleep on me just yet. I'm going to excuse myself to the bathroom for a moment. I'll be right back." He placed a kiss on the top of my head and headed towards the bathroom. I couldn't help the fact that my eyes followed his amazing looking backside the whole way there.
"That guy is a bit of a tool, don't you think?" Alex said with a laugh, but his voice itself was serious. I scoffed from my position on the couch and repositioned myself, pulling my legs up underneath myself. I rolled my eyes and chose not to dignify his question with a response at all. "Did you hear me?" he said, his breath was hot in my ear, and shivers went up my spine. When had he gotten so close?
"Back off Tiers, you have no say in what I do. So piss off." I said, trying to sound fierce, but the alcohol in my system betrayed any chance I had of that.
"You know what? Fuck it. Have an awesome night." He spat and I heard his footsteps stomp off in the other direction. Thank mercy for that. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I felt a large hand come down on my shoulder.
"Bedtime, Bella." Dimitri cooed and extended his hand towards me.
"Of course, my knight in shinning armor." I said wryly taking his hand and letting him pull me up from the couch. Dimitri helped me up the stairs and up to my room, and I wasn't shocked to discover that he was a total gentleman. He tried no funny business. He helped remove the painful black high heeled pumps that had been cutting into my heels all night, slipped off my dangly necklaces and removed my earrings. He even turned away as I slipped off my dress and replaced it with an oversized t-shirt that fell to my mid-thigh. I smiled sleepily as he curled himself around me, shirtless with only a pair of boxers. I nestled my head into the crook of his neck, and before I knew it I was passed out.
Light shined in through my windows, almost rudely too early, and I groaned as I covered my face with the back of my hand. I tried to pull the covers up over my head but try as I might I couldn't get them to budge. What the hell? I know I'm not strong, but damn, I knew I wasn't that weak. I reached my hand out and felt the warmth of another body behind mine. No, no, no. Not again. I sat up startled and tried to conjure any memories from the night before.
My breath caught in my throat as I looked at the man occupying the other side of my bed. Tussled dark curly locks flowed over his careless and sleeping face. His large frame was strewn across my bed, his muscled arms and well-defined body entwined in the mess of my sheets. No wonder I couldn't pull them up. One of his eyes cracked open slowly; icy blue. Dimitri. My heart warmed instantly. I must be going crazy. Who was I expecting, Alec? I shook the thought from my head and gave him a sheepish smile.
"Mornin' beautiful." He said, his Russian accent thickly coloring his voice at this early hour, and returning a sleepy smile in my direction. He groaned and stretched out across my bed. A sight I could definitely get used to.
"Morning…" I placed a small peck of kiss on his cheek, and slid out of the bed. I looked around the floor of my messy room. Bingo. I grabbed a pair of sleep shorts from the pile of clean clothes and slipped them on. "When you're ready, come down. I'm making breakfast." I murmured.
The house wasn't as messy as I thought it'd be. Although someone was sleeping on the floor with a blanket pulled up over their head, and two other bodies occupied my couch. I didn't care to investigate further and tip-toed my way into the kitchen. I looked around at the empty bottles, cans, and dirty glasses that were spread across the counters and decided that I'd definitely have to clean up a bit first before I would be able to cook anything.
I gathered the first armful of garbage, and the clanking of cans and bottles must have been a little too loud, because I heard a groan come from the direction of the living room. I peeked through the kitchen into the living room to see the body on the floor had begun stirring, and I visibly flinched when the blanket was pulled sleepily from his face. Awesome. I turned my back to the living room and continued my mission of cleaning the kitchen, when I heard the padded footsteps of someone joining me in the room.
When I turned I saw Alec still wiping sleep from his face as he opened the fridge. No doubt searching for something to drink. He didn't seem to register my presence until I pulled a pan from the cupboard and set it down on the stove. His head snapped in my direction as he pulled the bottle of orange juice off the stop shelf and slammed the refrigerator door closed.
"Well, you look like a total wreck." He said, his voice still layered with sleep.
"Do you make it a key motive to be annoying, or does it just come naturally for you?" I spat, running a hand through my mess of morning hair, and he smirked.
"As the Lady G says, I was born this way." I rolled my eyes, and shoved him out of my way to get to the fridge. I pulled out the carton of eggs and a pack of bacon and set them down on the counter. I didn't deign to respond to his antics, and instead began cracking eggs into a bowl and throwing strips of bacon onto the heated pan. The sizzling sounded like heaven.
"Hungry much?" Alec said, eyeing the amount of bacon and eggs I had cooking on the stove. Again, I ignored him, until he picked up a piece of cooked bacon and popped it in his mouth.
"That's not for you!" I hissed, and smacked his hand with the spatula.
"Then who are you –"
"Bella?" I heard Dimitri call from the living room, and I could visibly see Alec's body stiffen in response.
"In here!" I called, sliding the eggs and bacon onto two separate plates for him and I.
"Are you freaking kidding me?" Alec hissed under his breath, his eyes wildly looking into mine.
"Get the fuck over it." I hissed back, bumping him in the side as I passed him and made my way into the living room to meet Dimitri. "Let's eat upstairs, Dimitri. It's a bit crowded down here."
