Hi! I'm back, sort of early, with another chapter! I'm leaving tomorrow to go see some relatives so I wanted to get the chapter out before this weekend. Quick reminder, with the existence of Siren, and now Banshee, the designations for the team will slightly be off. I'm not sure if it'll come up in the fic, but just in case anyone is curious, Sam's designation is B-two-three seeing as he joins after Wonder Girl and before Blue Beetle.

Metropolis
January 5, 17:09 EST
"Dude, do you think we could grab something to eat before we take this guy out? I could go for some fries right now."
"No, Sam."
He wrinkled his nose at Karen's deadpan stare. "Fine." He then shoved his hands in his pockets to keep them warm, bracing himself against the bitter wind.
They, along with Jaime, were quickly approaching Bibbo's Diner. Apparently, the owner–the diner's namesake–had been acting strangely for a while. And as it turned out, Bibbo was one of the hostages taken and then subsequently rescued by Sam's squad in New Orleans.
He wasn't the only one though, so the League had Siren and Nightwing send out squads to locate the masquerading aliens. Sam's squad, which consisted of him, Karen, and Jaime, had the orders to go to Metropolis and apprehend the Krolotean posing as Bibbo. All they had to do was capture it and bring it back to be interrogated. Simple enough.
A bell chimed as Sam entered the diner, holding the door open to let his teammates into the warm building. While he did, he got a good look at their suspect.
"Sit anywhere, kids."
'Bibbo' was behind the counter, acting relatively normal as he approached them with a few menus. That is until he got a good look at who they were.
His calm demeanor changed to one of fright as he backed away. Before they could react, he jumped off the edge of the counter, through the service window, and into the kitchen.
Great. Sam exchanged a look with his squad before vaulting over the counter. Throwing the kitchen door open, he sprinted through the room, weaving between racks to pursue the fake Bibbo. Karen and Jaime were hot on his heels as he slammed into the side door that the Krolotean had just run out of.
As Sam sprinted down the snow-covered alley, a small bug-like thing flew by. He knew it to be Karen, the woman having shrunk out of her civilian clothing to chase after their suspect faster. Jaime had also changed, his armor simply appearing over his clothing before he took off with his own set of wings.
Sam grumbled as he pushed himself to run faster. What I would give to have cool costume changes like that.
The Krolotean had jumped over panels sealing off half of the alley, but Sam didn't need to worry about trying to find a way over as Blue had simply rammed through it. All Sam had to do was make sure he didn't trip. But they still hadn't caught up to the Krolotean.
Luckily enough, they didn't have to.
Stepping out of another part of the alley where he had been waiting was the real Bibbo, punching the fake Bibbo in the face to knock him flat on his back.
"There's only one Bibbo," the man grunted, "and don't you forget it."
Sam let out a low whistle as he skidded to a stop, almost slipping on an icy patch. "Nice hit."
He looked down at the robot's open torso where the Krolotean was screeching. He was mad, no doubt cursing them in his language. And he wasted no time in escaping.
Sam lunged to try and catch the alien before it could scamper away, but his attempts were futile as it rebounded off the brick wall beside them to get around to a grate in the ground.
Bumblebee chased after him, firing at him with her stingers. Her attack was successful, but it caused the Krolotean to fall down into the sewers anyway. The squad hurried forward to see where he was and if they could continue their pursuit, but as Sam leaned over to look down the ladder, he was knocked back by an explosion caused by the Krolotean's ride's exhaust. Jesus Christ.
Bibbo huffed. "Boy, that practically singed my eyebrows off."
"Yeah. Practically." Blue Beetle then noticed the soot all over Bumblebee's lower face. "Uh, you got a little-"
"Blue, scan for it!"
"Now, preferably!" Sam added.
At his teammates' demand, Blue focused on the matter at hand. "Right, right. Scanning."
There was a brief pause as the trio, plus Bibbo, waited for results.
"Sorry, nothing. He's gone."
Sam sighed, his shoulders sagging. "I'll report in." He lifted his hand to press his comm.
"No, it would not have been preferable to vaporize him back at the diner."
Sam paused as he eyed Blue who was seemingly arguing with himself again. He seriously needs to be checked out. Shaking his head, he called his superiors.
"Delta to Cave…"

Taos
January 6, 09:58 MST
Siren tapped her foot impatiently. None of the squads' missions in the past few days had gone well when all of the Kroloteans they were tracking down escaped. Those little aliens were quickly proving to be a problem for the League and the team, and, to make things worse, they hadn't figured out why yet.
Siren hoped that was going to change shortly.
A STAR Labs scientist approached the group of heroes, addressing Captain Atom directly. "Sir? We've received the Rannian signal. They're arriving now."
Right on cue, the Zeta-Tube turned on. "Recognized: Adam Strange, A-one-one; Miss Martian, B-zero-six; Superboy, B-zero-five; Beast Boy, B-two-zero."
"Nightwing! Siren!" The young shape-shifter ran to the front of the group, grinning excitedly which made Siren's demeanor soften fondly. "Check out my super-cool alien souvenir!" He held up the item to show it off proudly, but his big sister stopped him with a placating hand.
"Zeta Squad, report," Nightwing requested.
"Our mission to neutralize the Krolotean's Zeta-Platforms on Rann was a success," Miss Martian immediately said.
"I've also brought back specs to create a Zeta-Shield to prevent any more aliens from beaming to Earth from off-world," Adam Strange added, turning on a projection that showed an example of what the shield would look like.
"How will that affect our own Zeta capabilities?" Captain Atom wondered, understandably concerned about the potential lack of transportation.
Siren had to agree. The League and the team heavily relied on the ability to go anywhere on Earth in an instant. Without it, it would severely slow their work down.
"It won't," Adam reassured. "The shield will activate at an altitude above the Watchtower's orbit. League Zeta-Tubes will still function normally."
"Good," Siren said. "Did you learn anything else while you were there?"
Beast Boy grabbed Miss Martian's arm, pulling her forward. "Tell them about Rimbor! Tell them about the sixteen hours."
Siren's eyes went wide as she looked down at the boy and then lifted her head to share a look with her co-leader. This is it. The answer we've been spending five years trying to find.
"It may be easier to show you," Miss M admitted, lifting her hand to her temple. When her eyes glowed green, a memory that wasn't her own entered Siren's mind.
"I successfully interrogated a Krolotean general on Rann," the telepath began to explain, "who had paid off a member of the Rannian Science Command to allow the Kroloteans to land a secret base in the Rannian jungle.
"Once there, the Kroloteans stole Zeta-Platform technology from Adam Strange's friend, Sardath. They landed another ship in New Orleans and used the Zeta-Platforms to beam a few hundred Kroloteans to Earth."
Siren frowned. Sam's mission…But why here?
"They built more platforms, brought in more Kroloteans, and began abducting and replacing humans." The relay of information ended as Siren turned back to her teammate standing in front of her.
"Perhaps as part of an invasion strategy," Miss M continued out loud. "Though that's still unclear."
"But why Earth?" Captain Atom wondered the same thing as Siren.
"And what does any of this have to do with the sixteen hours?" Wonder Woman added.
Having a telepath in the room was proving to be handy as it usually did. "Well, as you know...five years ago, Vandal Savage placed the entire League under his control. Six leaguers: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, and Hawkwoman went missing for a full sixteen hours."
Siren's stomach only twisted more as the story continued. Because of course nothing good would have come out of anything Savage had planned.
"It turns out you were teleported to a planet called Rimbor where you spent sixteen hours on a rampage," Miss Martian explained, allowing them to view exactly what she had discovered. "Attacking everyone and everything in sight, and announcing in several alien languages that you were 'the Justice League from Earth' and that 'the rest of the galaxy should beware.'"
Siren imagined her look of pure shock matched that of Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Captain Atom. This is bad. This is very bad.
"That's why the Kroloteans came. The League itself brought Earth to their attention," Miss M finished.
"I don't know what to say," Wonder Woman whispered. "I have no memories of this. None."
"Don't blame yourself," Captain Atom told her, resting a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Blame Savage and his Light."
"Already do for everything else," Siren muttered, loud enough for Nightwing to hear.
"Tell me about it," he answered quietly.
"But John, how is it that you haven't heard about this 'intergalactic incident'?" the League's leader wondered.
"No clue. Rimbor's not a planet in my sector," he admitted. "But I'll head to Oa immediately to consult with the Guardians of the Universe and Green Lantern Corps. We'll get to the bottom of this, Cap. I promise."
"In the meantime, we still have a Krolotean invasion force to track down on Earth," Captain Atom said to the team. "You did good work on Rann. Now we need you at the Hall of Justice."
He turned to Siren and Nightwing as he explained the situation to Miss Martian. "There's a Krolotean that some of your teammates captured when they stumbled across the Krolotean base in New Orleans," he recalled. "Since you were able to interrogate the Krolotean general on Rann, I figure you could be of use with our prisoner here."
"Of course. I'll see what I can do," Miss Martian readily agreed.
Siren turned to Nightwing. "I'll go with Miss M to check on the progress," she said. "We'll let you know what we find."
She was a bit surprised to see Superboy willingly join their trip to D.C. unprompted. She wondered if something happened while on Rann that warmed him up to the idea of being around Miss M again. Maybe something good happened.
Slipping down a side hallway to avoid the public, the trio of original team members made their way to an interrogation room in the lower levels. Siren knew that there had been no luck in getting information from the captured Krolotean, but if Captain Atom believed Miss Martian could accomplish something, she wasn't going to disagree.
Siren pressed a button beside the viewing room, allowing the door to slide open. Batman was watching as Martian Manhunter telepathically interrogated the Krolotean sitting across from him, but Siren couldn't tell if there was any progress or not.
"This is the Krolotean captured by Lagoon Boy, Banshee, Robin, and Beetle?" Miss Martian asked for clarification.
"Yes," Siren affirmed. "We're lucky they were even able to capture him. The guys reported that there were hundreds down there and something seemed to spook them which made them flee and set the base to self-destruct."
She narrowed her eyes at the alien through the one-way glass. "It's a miracle they made it out alive and with the hostages at all."
"Your uncle has been interrogating him for days, but simply achieving psychic translation has proven difficult," Batman explained, confirming to Siren that there was no change. "In the meantime, the League and the team have hunted the Kroloteans that had been masquerading as humans."
"There wasn't any success though," Siren pointed out. "Every group that went out to apprehend Kroloteans failed when every single one of them managed to escape. Some squads nearly had better luck than others, but they all still resulted in the same outcome."
Siren and Nightwing themselves had gone on an assignment in New York. When the various teams of Leaguers and team members went out to shut down the Zeta-Tubes used by the Kroloteans, the one that Siren's squad had missed on New Years was found, but it had no Kroloteans nearby at the time.
Nightwing and Siren had found where the Krolotean had been hiding, but unfortunately, the two team leaders hadn't been fast enough and the alien had dove off the dock they chased it to. It didn't come back up for air so there was nothing else they could have done.
"But there must be something we're missing, considering the fact that they're escaping even after we destroyed their Zeta-Platforms here and on Rann, and that they, apparently, destroyed their own ship," Batman added. "After your success on Rann, Captain Atom thought you might be of some assis-"
"The Kroloteans have an emergency rendezvous point and have standing orders in case of discovery to evacuate there."
Siren blinked as Miss Martian suddenly seemed to have the answers. She glanced into the interrogation room at the Krolotean then back at her teammate. How did she get that so fast?
"Okay…then where?" she asked.
"A base inside a volcano on Malina Island."
Siren and Batman shared a look. "We don't have much time to waste," he told her.
She nodded. "I'll go talk to Nightwing. We'll need both League and team members to pitch in if we're going to succeed this time around."
"Agreed. I will contact Captain Atom and we'll proceed from there."
With a plan in motion, Siren quickly moved to leave the room. She paused when she noticed Superboy basically glowering at Miss Martian. "You okay?"
"Fine," he said through gritted teeth.
Siren stared at him briefly but said nothing more. There was no time to. They had a mission to accomplish; conversation could wait.

"Remember, this is primarily a recon mission. We want to discover all we can about the Kroloteans' invasion strategy before we shut them down and deliver them to the Green Lantern Corps."
While listening to Batman talk, Banshee tightened the laces of his bracers. Simple enough mission, right? Since joining the team, any missions he had been involved in were as simple as they come.
There wasn't much hard-hitting work to be done in the three months he had been a member. It wasn't really until the mission to shut down where Kroloteans were transporting from that he got a real taste of life-threatening situations. And using brand-new tech was an obstacle on its own.
To be honest, Banshee thought Siren was lucky. Things were different from her experiences. Her power was natural. She was born with it just as her older sister and mom were. She had told Banshee that he didn't have to have the skill she had to be a hero; she would still train him in hand-to-hand combat, then later on in whatever weapon he chose, until he was ready to join the team.
But when she approached him with the idea to artificially recreate the Canary Cry, he couldn't have said yes fast enough. To get to use the powerful ability he had only seen on the news when he was a kid? A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
"Drop zone Beta," his mentor spoke up from the pilot's seat.
A hatch opened in the floor that allowed Aquaman and Lagoon Boy to dive into the ocean below. They would infiltrate the base from underwater while the rest would infiltrate from ground level.
The Bioship continued to the center of the island, quietly coming to a stop in the forest a few yards from the volcano base. "Drop zone Gamma," Siren announced, looking over at Batman and his many protégés. "You four are up first."
Banshee stood up from his seat, sliding his mask over his face. He knew the drill.
Once they infiltrated the base, Gamma Squad would remain on the upper levels and remain hidden from sight until they received word from Alpha Squad–who was already inside–and Beta Squad that they had the intel needed.
Ready to go, Banshee dropped out of the hatch after Robin, sticking to the trees with Siren as the Bat family took out the Manta troopers. Once it was clear, and once Nightwing had hacked the door, the group slipped inside the base.
Banshee stuck close to Siren as they grappled onto the third level, hidden from any troopers or Kroloteans. While the others would drop down to the second, they would provide a lookout while being so high up.
It had been silent for a while before Banshee heard Siren, who had been looking through binoculars to the ground level, let in a sharp inhale. Before he could turn to see what the matter was, his unspoken question was answered when gunfire started up.
"Go!" she ordered.
Banshee attached a grappling hook to the railing in front of him, rappelling down on top of a couple of Manta troopers. He ducked the lasers being shot at him to bring an uppercut into the assailant's jaw. As he stumbled back, Banshee pivoted to roundhouse him over the railing.
Another trooper had snuck up on him while his back was turned, grabbing him in a chokehold. Okay, remember, don't struggle or they'll only tighten their grip. Banshee lifted his foot, pushing off the railing to use as momentum to flip over the trooper while breaking his hold and slamming him down to the balcony floor.
"Good thinking on using your surroundings." Banshee turned his head to see Siren using the chain at her hip to pull a trooper over the railing.
He rolled over onto his feet to join her at the railing where he spotted Batgirl and Robin fighting back against more troopers. Higher up, Nightwing was holding out on his own.
Siren let out a yelp and Banshee had just enough time to see her tumble over the railing as a trooper had fired at her. Banshee lunged for his mentor, ignoring the trooper as he quickly grabbed her hand. He let out a grunt as he gripped the railing, kicking back to knock the trooper in the head so he would have enough time to pull Siren up.
"Drop me! I'm going to help out Nightwing!" she called out.
Banshee nodded with a frown, releasing the heroine from his hold as he immediately spun around to body slam the trooper who had tried to stand. They collided with the rock wall and the trooper sank to the ground with a groan.
Since the walkway was clear, Banshee then vaulted off the railing to join Siren and Nightwing below just as he heard the latter speak into his comm. "Nightwing to Delta Squad. Enemy is attempting escape. Request: backup."
Looking to the ground level, Banshee could see just how badly they needed backup. Machines that resembled spiders were firing laser cannons at anyone they could see.
"Can we help them?" Banshee wondered.
Just then, the side of the volcano exploded, allowing Superman, Superboy, Wonder Woman, and Wonder Girl to swoop in and begin their assault.
"I think they've got it covered," Siren said amusedly. "But you can help me out here, back-to-back."
Banshee stepped behind her, turning so his back faced hers. On a mental count of two, he let out a scream at the same time she had. Being able to cover more ground at once, the both of them were able to throw back several troopers into the wall of the volcano and off the balcony.
"You did not want to believe!"
The sudden outburst from below turned Banshee's attention to the ground floor. He was surprised at what he saw below and judging by Siren's strangled gasp, she was too.
The former Aqualad, Siren's…ex-boyfriend Kaldur, was dressed in garb resembling that of Black Manta and his troops. So what she said was right.
When she brought up the prospect of joining the team, Siren had first told him about the four teenage heroes, including herself, who started it all. He had questioned why Aqualad was no longer around, which seemed to be a sore subject for her. She managed to explain that he left the team four years later when one of his best friends, a former member of the team, died soon after he learned his father was Black Manta himself. After that initial conversation, she never spoke about it again.
"None of us wanted to believe this!" Superboy told Kaldur. "How could you betray us?"
"You dare question me? After all of you let Tula die!"
Banshee noticed Siren's flinch as her eyes never wavered from what was transpiring below. "Si?" he said carefully, worried about her and wondering what was going through her mind.
But she didn't say anything as she and Nightwing jumped over the railing to join the group down below. Unsure of what else to do, Banshee did the same, landing behind his mentor with a glare at the traitor in front of them.
"Kaldur, that was a mission. Aquagirl knew the risks!" Nightwing reminded him. "No one wanted her to-"
Lagoon Boy shoved his way to the front. "Neptune's Beard! Don't coddle this traitor. He has joined forces with our king's greatest enemy."
Kaldur glared in Aquaman's direction. "Do you mean the king who hid from me the true identity of my father?" he said with a sneer.
"That was my error in judgment, Kaldur'ahm," Aquaman admitted. "No one else need suffer for it."
"All will suffer if Black Manta demands it."
Siren looked so tense that Banshee was afraid she was going to break. "Kaldur…" she whispered, her voice cracking.
His eyes flickered to her for the first time. Banshee could have sworn he saw the Atlantean's expression soften ever so slightly for just a moment, but when the young hero blinked, Kaldur's face was hard again.
"Blood is thicker than seawater."
No one had time to react before a missile launcher retracted out of Kaldur's armor, firing a small bullet out at the group. But before it could hit anyone, Superman shielded them all with his body.
By the time the smoke had cleared, Kaldur was gone. But so were Siren, Nightwing, and Superboy.
Banshee didn't have time to wonder where they had gone because the squads were still under attack. He rolled away from the fire from the Krolotean-driven robots, letting out a screech in an attempt to make one tip over. But the return fire was too much to dodge so he was forced to retreat.
"They're getting away!" Wonder Girl cried out, noticing the ship starting to dive underwater.
Lagoon Boy was right by her side as they raced after the enemy. "We'll stop them."
"Negative." Nightwing's voice came in over Banshee's comm as he huddled with Robin behind some machinery. "We have a bomb down here. Alien tech. I cannot disarm it."
"I'll get it out," Superboy quickly volunteered.
"No." Siren's voice was harsh, maybe excessively so. "We don't know the first thing about this."
"Might have pressure or motion sensors," Nightwing agreed. "All squads, evacuate to Bioship. Now."
"You heard Nightwing. Move!"
Following Batman's command, Banshee quickly followed Batgirl and Robin down the nearest exit tunnel. He suddenly became very thankful for the amount of running he had to do in gym class. Never thought it would save my life one day. Literally.
As they burst through the base entrance, the Bioship was de-camouflaging as it lowered to let everyone board. Banshee slowed down enough to glance back at the entrance. "Where's Siren and Nightwing?"
Just then, he saw the two of them sprinting toward the Bioship. Siren was waving him off. "Get inside! Go!"
Banshee quickly boarded, grabbing the closest seat he could find shortly before Nightwing and Siren did the same on the opposite side of the ship.
"Wait, where's Superman?" Superboy questioned.
"He's indestructible, he'll be fine," Siren reassured. "But we won't be if we don't get out. M'gann, floor it!"
Miss Martian took off at a high rate of speed. She put everything she had into getting the Bioship off the island and soaring over the ocean. And not a moment too soon as the whole volcano exploded.
Banshee thought they were in the clear until the Bioship was suddenly rocked by the blast, throwing all its passengers around. He gripped the side of the ship tightly, grunting as he tried to brace himself as best he could.
Luckily, Miss Martian had managed to keep control of the ship, being able to pull them out of the blast zone. Once the tremors calmed down, she looped back around to retrieve their missing passenger.
"Does anyone see him?"
"There!"
The Man of Steel was falling out of the sky, landing straight into the ocean. It was clear that he was unconscious as he floated in the water face first, so
Aquaman was quick to dive down and grab the Kryptonian. Meanwhile, Miss Martian lowered the ship enough for Superboy to reach out the hatch and help pull him aboard.
"He's breathing. Pulse is strong," Wonder Woman reported as she checked his vitals once he was inside. "He'll be all right."
"He didn't save the Kroloteans," Superboy sighed. "He won't be all right with that."
"What just happened?" Wonder Girl questioned, still reeling from the night's events.
Miss Martian looked to her in contemplation. "The Kroloteans were clearly trying to build a new ship…"
Lagoon Boy turned to his girlfriend. "They had to, Angelfish. It was their only way to leave Earth without their Zeta-Platforms or original ship."
"But was Aqualad helping them escape? Or luring them into a trap?" Wonder Girl pressed.
Banshee frowned, sparing a glance at his mentor. Her arms were crossed as her head was turned to look out the window. She had said nothing else after she boarded.
"The bomb was of alien origin, yet the Kroloteans clearly knew nothing about it. So where did it come from?" Nightwing wondered.
"I have the feeling it may be up to you and your team to find out," Batman said gravely.
The rest of the flight home was silent. Superman was resting, and others were coping with what they witnessed on Malina Island.
Banshee watched with sympathy as Nightwing rested a hand on Siren's shoulder. She seemed so lost in thought that the touch made her jump. Which was surprising because Banshee never thought Siren would lose focus like that, especially when involving her friends.
Her face radiated exhaustion as she reached a hand up from where she was clutching her necklace to rest it on Nightwing's. No words between them were spoken, but their expressions probably said all either of them needed to know.
She nodded at his silent inquiry—probably wondering if she was going to be alright—before she leaned forward to rest her head on his shoulder. The two old friends remained that way for the rest of the flight.

Things were about to get a lot harder. With six of the League's strongest heroes leaving to stand in a trial against what they had done while under mind-control, they would be leaving Siren's team with a lot of work there on Earth. They had much to take care of involving the Krolotean situation and she knew it was just the beginning.
Siren hung back with Captain Atom and Green Lantern as the rest of the League members conversed with their protégés and family members one last time before the long journey to Rimbor.
"Are you sure we can't also send someone from the team with you guys?" Siren wondered. "I feel bad knowing you all have to deal with this without us helping in some way."
"The less having to travel to Rimbor, the better," Captain Atom reminded her. "Whether we realize it or not, we've got a lot of work to do here that'll require as many of us as possible to accomplish considering six Leaguers will now be out of commission."
He turned to Green Lantern. "But are you sure this is necessary?"
"The Guardians of the Universe seem to think so," GL answered. "They sent Hal and Guy ahead to make sure the so-called High Court of Rimbor will know we come in peace and know we expect a fair trial."
"Here's to hoping they'll give one," Siren said with a sigh. "Good luck. To all of you."
"To you as well." Green Lantern moved away from the leaders of the League and team to address the other Leaguers. "Time to go."
The six Leaguers–plus Hawkman, Green Lantern, and the captured Krolotean–gathered together so that Green Lantern could use his ring to form a ship around them.
As it began to close, Wonder Woman bid one last farewell. "May the gods be with you all."
The fully formed ship began to rise into the air, causing the wind to pick up around those standing at the shore. It wasn't long before it was merely a speck in the sky, then it was gone.
As the rest of the Leaguers and team members began to return to the Cave seeing as there was nothing else to do, one blonde member stayed behind.
Siren stared out over the horizon of the ocean, lost in thought. I do hope the gods will be with us because we're going to need all the help we can get.

Thanks for reading! You might be wondering if Jenna knows whether Kaldur is a double agent or not. And I'm going to...not tell you. For now. I'd prefer there to be a bit of a build-up to Depths, so I'm not going to go into huge detail because I don't want to spoil anything. But I wanted to let you guys know because yes, having the latter part of the chapter be in Banshee's POV was deliberate.
Oh, speaking of his POV, are the changes between him and Jenna easy enough to read for all of you? I've never been a fan of reading fics where the change in POV is clearly stated because it always felt like it broke the pace for me. But if that's something that you all would collectively prefer, I'll see what I can do. Let me know :)
See you all next week!
