Chapter 18

It had finally occurred to me why Light became so broken at the end of the anime.

The one thing that Light should supposedly rely on, was his family. Yet despite his good intentions for the world, his family shattered everything just by that one word.

Kira is evil.

Evil.

It was sad really, how even his own father had deemed his ideas and actions evil. I had somehow understood the feeling of being abandoned, of being hated despite them giving birth to you. I had sympathized with him because I knew as a fact that they would never see the world from his eyes.

No wonder he became positively mental. He had no one that he could trust nor keep up with him.

And this left a weakness. A room for me to exploit.

My eyes flashed darkly as we walked quietly in the street, heading back into the direction of home.

I could already see how this would all play out. I would strip him of everything he could trust, and be the only person for him. He would need me. Crave for me.

Yet that was what made him so attractive.

The idea of him being broken down and clinging onto his last strand of sanity was enthralling. Positively relishing.

Needless to say, I was somehow perfect for this position. I knew what Light was going to do, his ideals, his thoughts, and even his preferences. While it was true that I knew this from watching his life story unfold in anime, I was also able to tell exactly what he was thinking.

And that was extremely weird because I was not his real sister, yet could somehow understand him.

I knew him on a personal level.

Children who end up being abandoned by their parents could end in two ways. The first being absolutely repulsed by physical contact, or craving so much more than three average humans's all combined.

Light from the anime was not the ladder.

But in this version, he will be.

"Sayu," I heard his voice and stopped, turning around to face him despite our house being 5 more miles away.

"Why are you helping...Kira?"

I could hear the hesitancy in his voice which was rare for him. I knew that he was struggling to choose between asking his own name and his title for the question, but he knew that if he asked about himself, I would just brush it off with a blood-related excuse.

"Because, my dear brother," I cooed before stepping closer towards him. He watched with wary eyes as I approached before suddenly yanking him down to my eye level. His facial muscles twitched without expressing any of his surprises but had let me have my way with him.

"If you get caught as Kira, then I will not be the proud daughter of Soichiro Yagami, but the cruel and evil sister of a mass murder." I hissed before letting go.

The expression on his face stiffened at my remark as he stumbled backwards from my small push.

"Oh don't get me wrong, Light." I waved him dismissively before eyeing him seriously. "I'm only implying that history is written by its victors."

His gaze stared knowingly back at mine as his hands moved into his pockets, pulling out the piece of death note that he had used to kill Naomi.

"Touch this." He demanded before I threw back my head for a good laugh.

"I'm not too keen on seeing a monster in the middle of the street." I shook my head and turned away from him, walking forwards. I heard a sound of irritation from his mouth but I ignored it.

He knew that my words meant direct refusal to come in contact with the Death Note. In other words, I was bluntly telling him to not include me in his whole murdering spree.

"You don't trust me?" His deep voice behind me as I sighed and turned around for the umpth time.

"You should be the last one to ask me about trust, Light." My hair flapped gently in the wind before I brushed it away from my face. "You legit have a mass murder weapon in your hands, and I would not like to die because I accidentally placed salt instead of sugar."

Probably wasn't the smartest thing to be having this conversation in the middle of the street, but our voices were fairly low, and to mention that this road was the one least taken from the citizens since a rapist case had appeared in this area.

Everything was empty except for the silent houses that witnessed our conversation. But even if they did listen, they would not be able to understand it. Most likely they'd just brush it off as some child's nonsense.

"I thought you said that you were bored?" He raised his eyebrow, furthermore trying to tempt me while not denying the fact that he could possibly kill me for serving him the wrong food.

I rolled my eyes.

"What good does it give me when I can't even use it? You know about my condition." I gestured mockingly at myself and gave an oily smile.

"Don't play with me," this time his voice contained full of irritation. Light was literally passing me the book of power yet I refused just to annoy him. In hindsight, he probably already knew that I was doing it deliberately.

I wiggled my eyebrows at him before stepping closer.

"Then I'll fully expect you to be distracting me from screaming bloody murder." I grinned before reaching out to touch the paper. Once my fingers grazed slightly over it, I slammed my eyes closed and crashed my lips onto Light's, earning a muffled snort from him.

Ah, he predicted this?

I licked Light's bottom lip, asking for entrance as he let me. I could practically feel his rolling eyes as his hand supported me by snaking it around my waist to pull me closer. The cold air on our skin only made the heat blaze hotter with the jolts of electricity from his touch.

Craving each other.

Wanting more.

It filled our senses.

"I really find it interesting how you can both ignore the presence of a shinigami and still mate in public."

We broke apart from each other with locked gazes, breath mingling with each other before I flickered my eyes to the floating Death God.

"Commentary is not necessary," I eyed him before observing his whole body up and down.

He was much more sinister-looking than the anime. Instead of black pupils, they were glowing red pupils with apparent yellow eyeballs that were both angled too far apart along with his eyes for comfort. The grin on his face was much more twisted, reaching past his cheekbones as he flashed his disordered teeth at me in greeting.

Instead of dark blue hair, it was replaced with pure black that matched his clothes which seemed to have been sewed into his skin. Eerie spikes were jabbing out of his shoulders with indecipherable tension.

I blinked once.

But rather than scary, he looked mind-bashing hilarious.

What's this…?

Joker smile + Voldemort nose + YugiOH chains + IT the clown who skipped leg day?

"Hehuhuhuhehehe." I covered my eyes to bury the titles I gave him while snickering.

Oh, good lords, I can see where the scary references come from.

"You're a curious one, girly." I heard him float closer to me as I began to chortle. "Not many humans can maintain their composure after seeing a Death God."

I held up my hand for him to stop inching closer.

"I am not composed," I uttered out before my body started to go into a full-out convulse. If I had been more dramatic, I would be rolling on the ground and dying.

These were the pictures that flashed through my mind:

Voldemort: This is my FATHDAA!

Joker: Grandpa, are you here to give me another crowbar?

{the clown) Pennywise: We come from the same seeeewer *hisses*

Yugi: I shall bestow the belt of darkness onto yoooouu!

The thing was, that the images were so clear that I could literally imagine the characters prancing around the street and shrieking in excitement.

"You-" wheeze "do you-" gasp "have a surgery center" laughs "in your world-" breaths.

"You need to get your nose done. I cannot-"

I had the best day of my life at that moment.

I yawned, watching Light stitch together a special wallet for his Death Note.

Light's eyebrows lifted as he turned to me before placing it down and tapping his fingers on his desk,

"You know, it would be very helpful if you could help," he said with an irritated frown as I rolled over on my belly, staring at him with bored eyes.

"I don't see how you're struggling. You're doing quite well for a male, in fact." I yapped before flopping forwards lazily.

"You're must be quite popular with those hands, Light." Ryuk chuckled and peered over curiously at the wallet. "Nice designs."

"It's not really about the skills, it's the face that matters, Ryuk." Light turned back to his work, continuing with the stitches.

"Is that the same for you, girly?" The Death God turned towards me and slid onto the bed too, laying on his side.

"Depends on the situation," I held my hand and waved it in the air listlessly without opening my eyes.

"If I was some random girl without Light being my brother, sure, his looks would pique my interest, but it wouldn't get me to move." I opened my eyes and gave a lopsided grin.

"Oh? Why not?" His eyes stared back at me without even shifting, making me feel uncomfortable.

"I do not do boys," I narrowed my eyes at his question. "I am not interested in cheesy romance that would waste my time and effort."

"Yet you were with that guy during your fair thingy."

"That was because I found him…" I pursed up my lips to try and search for the correct word. "...Useful."

Ryuk laughed eerily at my words, his hand crawling closer to me before I flicked it away.

"Quite the cruel one, aren't you girly? Just like your brother."

I sniffed boredly at the Death God before glancing at Light who hadn't stopped his hands.

"Then what about your brother? Surely you must have a thing for him." Ryuk stole my attention before adding on, "is it his face?"

The room was completely silent, not even the pulling of the thread was heard after Ryuk's question.

"I think I've been too long with him to be attracted to his face." I started playing with a lock of my hair, twirling it in between my fingers. Ryuk's never leaving eyes made me huff before elaborating more.

"If I had to pick, I'd say his mind."

Well, that came out shorter than I had expected.

"His mind, eh? I don't see how anyone can find a mind that focuses on killing to be attractive." Ryuk cackled evilly before staring at me with interest.

"You don't say, I bet he even has a God complex." Crossing my legs, my hands fluttered through my dark brown locks before hearing Ryuk's laugh again, this time facing Light.

"She knows you well, doesn't she, Light? Even for a sibling."

Light's chair swished around tensely, before plastering a large indecipherable smile.

"That's because she's my sister."

Ryuk chuckled at Light's answer, knowing fully that there was more to his words. My heart thumped uncomfortably.

"Curious, curious." Ryuk stood up before extending and flapping his wings before dropping down again. "What an unusual pair of siblings. Truly interesting."

Light's eyes shifted over to mine as we both stared at each other with knowing gazes. The way his eyes glimmered dazzled me, sending my cheeks to blaze red before I tore myself away and rolled into his covers.

Curious. Truly curious.

School was back in session on January 8th, staring late because of the late arrival of winter break.

The classroom buzzed with excited chatterings and stories from their winter break.

My eyes wandered to Kyotani for a split second before checking out my friends who had started to learn French and Chinese on my orders.

"L'écrire?" Miyara murmured and fumbled clumsily with the pronunciation.

"Bring the L out more, instead of 'eclair,' it's 'L'ecree' like in English." I corrected her as she moved onto her next word.

It was amusing to see Miyara study. Of course, I knew she studied because of her above-average grades, but she was never seen studying in class. My gaze flickered to Isame who was sewing a small teddy bear together with her delicate and pale hands, pulling the thread and cutting the strong with her sewing scissors before continuing to tie a knot where the visible eye could not see.

To the outsiders, she seemed like she was only sewing a harmless stuffed toy. However, inside the paw of the bear lay a small recorder with storage that could last for 3 hours.

Beside me, Tsubame was scribbling down on the things that I told her to, finally pushing her pencil down and folding the paper in half before slipping it into the breast pocket of her uniform.

The best hiding spot was to be right underneath your nose when you are looking too far to see it.

"Is it finished?" I asked slowly and Tsubame nodded.

Quietly standing up from my chair, I headed towards the classroom door to search for teacher Hoshino.

"Hello again, Miss Yagami!" Hoshino's chair pushed out as he stopped writing on his books, closing it to face me with his full attention.

"I was wondering if I could graduate school early and take a university's entrance exams next January?"

My voice came out cold and demanding before his eyes shot a blank look and nodded his head physically and snapped back into his neutral state.

"Could you please tell me what I need?" I asked again as the bell started to ring for the next class. My math teacher gave me a quizzled look wordlessly before exiting the staff room to head over to my classroom.

"Ah, yes! You need to finish the grade 12 curriculum course and then send in a transcript to the university to apply for the exams." He ruffled through his files and pulled out a book filled with 12-year courses.

"Currently you have 21 credits, I believe." Hoshino reached out for his black computer bag and opened his device up."Quite advanced already for a first-year."

"You need 84 credits to graduate, which leaves 63 to finish. Each class is 3 credits." He explained.

"So I need 21 more classes?"

He nodded as confirmation.

"But with my 8 classes this year, is it possible to cram another 21?" My face scrunched up at the thought.

Damn this age gap.

The reason why I had to graduate earlier was that I had something to do when Light lost his memories. Without the memories of Death Note, he was vulnerable. And him being vulnerable would mean that it was easier to grasp his trust without the existence of Death Note.

Our relationship without the Death Note would be much more trusting and dependent. The Death Note was the problem he was so hesitant with letting people know of his powers and having the option to place my name in the note.

Of course, he couldn't since he was unable to write my name, but the thought that he potentially could cause him to try and manipulate me again and again, pushing our trust outside of the window completely.

Not to mention when both Light at Dad would be at the Taskforce, it made things relatively easier to do without their surveillance. I couldn't risk skipping class to actually be found out, so the easiest way would be to get into university, where the timetables were more flexible on the student.

"No student has ever attempted it," Hoshino shook his head at my question.

"Then do I actually need to attend class, or is there an exam that I could take to just pass the entire course?" Stiffening up from his answer, I waited in anticipation.

"Actually there is. I could give you the exams, and as long as you pass them, I give you the credits." He nodded and rolled his shoulders. "Though one course's exam would take around 4 hours to finish."

I physically flinched from the number.

To be honest, I had my hidden intentions despite all my reasoning to gain Light's trust. 8 grade work was just too boring for a university soul like me, not to mention I did not have the patience to plow through another 4 years of sitting in a chair and staring outside the cherry blossoms like some kind of emo anime protagonist.

Not to mention, I wanted to carry the title of genius.

I mean, why not? In my past life, my only title was the 'good girl who worked hard.'

I would rather learn something than waste my time doing things that I already knew.

"Could you tutor me in the subjects?" I tilted my head and placed on an irresistible pout even though I knew he couldn't refuse.

The thing was, even if I crammed in 21 subjects, it probably wouldn't take long for me to plow through the entire material since the education speed here was dreadfully slow compared to the 21st century.

"Yes, when are you free?" He checked his own schedule before asking me. My eyes glanced over his classes, finding all of them to end at 11.

"All weekdays from 1-5 pm, at the school resource room, is that possible?"

Hoshino nodded before scribbling down the time on a notepad and handing it to me before I wrote down my address.

"Okay, we'll start tomorrow then," I added before turning around and leaving the room. "Also, I would try to prepare 1 whole unit of class material for each hour. You will be teaching me, not guiding me on how to do the exercise questions."

I heard Hoshino's unwavering 'ok' before I exited completely out of the room, my hand still clenched on the elective courses that I would have to choose when I moved onto grade 12 material.

Honestly, I could've just asked Light, but he wouldn't even have the time because he was preparing for war against L.

The soles of my shoes echoed through the empty hall as my eyes shifted to glance back at the staff room one last time.

Hoshino Tengo

Will act on all requests of his female student with the last name of Yagami. All orders from this student shall be granted and not questioned until death. The orders shall not be shared until death. Cause of death: Original lifespan.

I walked up the house stairs with an extremely heavy sigh.

29 courses in 8 months, that is legit on the borders of insanity. From January to the end of September when I have to send my transcripts

Was I actually that desperate to get into university before next year? Couldn't I have just taken it more slowly before stepping on board with that insane idea?

Granted I could have directly commanded Hoshino to give me the credits, but then came the problem of me actually missing something and lagging behind in real-time. Though I could also control the principal in university to give me an easy pass or help me cheat, but that would erase the meaning of university, wouldn't it?

After all, learning was more essential than anything.

I'd just have to trust and believe in myself.

I shuddered at my cringy thoughts, biting my lip as I opened the door to my room. Instantly, I noticed something off. The closet was fully closed, yet I left it with a crack that did not line up perpendicular with each other this morning.

Sure, it could have been wind, but no windows were opened when I left.

Maybe I was being hypersensitive due to the recent events and upcoming red flags that involved surveillance cameras, but I was not particularly fond of being watched, even by my own dad.

What, now I had to change while wrapping a blanket around myself?

Pros would be that I could practice changing elegantly and my daily acting skills. L would also become my scapegoat for the devices that I installed months ago.

Cons would be that it was freaking disturbing when I think of my Dad or L staring at my naked body.

Now that I was potentially in this situation, the move L pulled was definitely illegal. Like, I don't mind you watching my movements, but would you please give me space when I change and go to the bathroom?!

And it wasn't like I could escape the cameras, if I had suddenly wanted a 2-week sleepover at my friend's it would be outright highlighting me as Kira 12% or something.

Talking about devices, had L found the hidden ones I planted?

I froze at the spot.

The coat and bed would definitely be hidden, but the one on the clock-

Why the hell did I even put a device on the clock? I didn't even get to use it!

I sighed before opening my closet and taking out the sweater where I last left my earpiece in. It was the one I wore when I found out about my Aphantasia. I had to destroy the evidence immediately.

Goddammit, I also had to get used to changing around cameras.

Stripping my top off, I pulled the sweater on my head before mouthing a bunch of cursed words and popping my head out. My eyes glanced at the clock before I stiffened.

3:20 pm.

Aw fuck, I had to get out of here before Light comes back, or else he'd ask something stupid like, 'did you go into my room?' and reveal our position to the enemy.

I cursed under my breath again, sprinting to the front door before stepping into my shoes and yanking the door open.

...To reveal a goddamn Light with his keys.

"Sayu?" He narrowed his eyes at my dishevelled hair and clothes before I jerked him out of the doorway by his arm, slamming the door shut behind us.

"She seems to be in a panic, Light." I heard Ryuk grin as I ignored him like the diva I was.

What do I say?

Yo Light, your arch-nemesis just broke into our house and planted multiple security cameras. Have fun knowing that L is going to watch your naked body in the shower!

Cackle cackle cackle.

"Sayu, what are you-"

"Shhh." I placed my finger on my lips before giving him a full-body pat-down and inspection.

Good. No security cameras or bulky places in his uniform.

I sighed in relief to see Light tapping his finger on his crossed arms.

Gosh, I needed an explanation.

"I believe," I took a sharp breath and whispered into his ear. "That someone we don't know has entered the house with access."

Light's prominent eyes flickered back and forth between the door and darkened intensely after a second before catching on the unspoken words I hid behind my phrase.

"Go in and check your room if there is anything off with it." I whispered before backing away. "Before you ask anything, no, I did not enter your room, and I will be at the nearest convenience store."

I flashed Ryuk a deadpan look.

"If my speculations are correct, we'll buy you apples."

Ryuk's whole body brightened.

"Oh, I'll do anything you wish, girly!" He giggled away before Light nodded tightly before heading in.

Well, that was one way to alert him.

I clasped my hands behind my back and started to walk towards the nearest convenience store, once checking that no one was in sight, I took out the earpiece from my pockets and threw it on the ground, grinding it to pieces under my feet.

You have served your purpose well, earpiece. My condolences, all I needed you was for the Death Note in his drawer.

Now…

My eyes flashed dangerously ahead.

How should I deal with the device under the clock?

I stood in the convenience store and opened a random fashion magazine. I never understood the use of magazines in the past. It wasn't like anyone actually found the information useful.

If they wanted to buy clothes, then go online and browse. What's the point of looking at papers of fashion without the cart at the bottom?

My eyes flickered to Light who stopped outside of the store. Placing the magazine down, I headed out of the store while shoving my hands in my pockets to observe Light's eyes. They already told me everything I needed to know.

"Dad allowed it." I gnarled out, shoving my hoodie over my head in disgust. "And when I thought all detectives were supposed to do things legally."

"I'm surprised that you actually noticed it." Light paced with me, walking towards the market with Ryuk twisting his body into an upside-down spiral.

"You're not the only one who placed small traps to keep track of who enters," I murmured darkly before shooting him a dirty look. He stared forwards with no apparent emotion at my reveal of both knowing his traps and my own deeds of setting up my tricks.

To be honest, I didn't need to set up decoys to notice something was off. I had already memorized the house layout and object places that I passed through every day. I also had kept track of both my parent's habits and was well informed that neither of them had the time, nor interest to be rummaging through my room.

If something was off and I was not aware I placed it there...

Someone had touched it.

Especially when I had deliberately closed my closet doors today morning, in a rush, knowing that the force I had pushed the doors would make the doors uneven.

"Your side job has placed security cameras all over the house." I accused and jabbed my finger in his direction.

"Girly, girly, did you know what Light said? He said that I wouldn't be able to eat any apples if I can't locate all the cameras!" Ryuk howled and started hopping midair, twisting his head 360 degrees which mildly freaked me out. And I thought that shinigamis had the physics of a human body.

How the heck was Ryuk able to completely dislocate his neck-

I didn't want to think about it.

Now that I thought of it, the anime was quite different from the one I was in.

Apparently, Ryuk could materialize his body whenever he wanted, actually physically being able to touch the humans that came in contact with the Death Note. Of course, even if he were to materialize, without touching the Death Note beforehand, you still wouldn't be able to see him nor feel him.

"Exactly," I wagged my finger at the Death God. "If you don't find out every bitty place they located them in, you'll only be able to smell the scent of apples, but never be able to touch them."

He gasped.

I copied his expression mockingly.

"You're cruel, girl!" His body twitched before wiggling like a seaweed. "And I thought you were buying apples to bribe me!"

"Art of torture 101," I scoffed before stopping in front of a cheap stall with shiny apples. Light followed me and picked out some oranges while I chose the apples.

"Girly, you're much more crueller than I thought." Ryuk's eyes suddenly flew out in my face, his blood-red pupils staring at me intensely. I flinched slightly at the abrupt movement, immediately looking past Ryuk and started to bargain casually for the price of an over-ripened apple.

I was about to take the bag of fruits before Light reached out for it, taking it from my arms. We left the market as Ryuk continued to prance around us, shooting question after question as we both ignored him.

"Cruel is an understatement, Ryuk," I threw down my hoodie before sliding off my hair tie and slipping it onto my wrist.

"I would prefer to be called a mad scientist."

My hair flapped gently behind me after Light's eyes trailed to my face.

"You're interested in dissection?" He exhaled a bit loudly before yanking his gaze away.

"More than you think," I answered as we walked slowly towards the direction of our house. "Say Light, when you become God, can I take some criminals and experiment on them?"

Light jerked his head towards me at my request.

" 'When', huh girly? Not 'if?' " Ryuk laughed as I gave me a sly smile.

"I know he will. He'll obtain whatever he wants in the end." I waved dismissively. "If he doesn't succeed, then I'll personally pluck the crown and throw him on the throne."

Ryuk cackled at my remark.

"So what about it, Light? They're going to be killed anyway. Why not let me have my fun?" Maliciously grinning, I turned to look at Light.

"I'm not...opposed to it," he stated before returning his eyes to the front.

"Dissection…" I heard him murmur beneath his breath.

"You know, I was referred to the NPA interrogation team for a reason, right?" I brought it up before we reached our house. Light looked at me with a dark glimmer before shrouding it back behind his ordinary facade.

"I am much more crueller than you think." My tone was silvery in the air.

"Anyone who stands in my way will fear me."
