Chapter 56

"Hah," I heard Mello's voice snarl out before the sound of chocolate snapped through the empty hall. Behind me the guards pushed me forward before I lowered my voice, telling them that I will walk by myself without any disobedience, please and thank you.

"Damn that Near!" Mello's voice pierced as hard as a blade. We shuffled quietly through the halls before Mello cursed again. "Always wrecking my plans-"

He grumbled some more as we made a sharp turn further into his base and stopped in front of a large two-way door. Mello's gang pushed me into the room despite my warning to not push me as I stumbled in, eyeing the bulletproof screen that blocked the floor below us. There were two floors and we were located on the second, where the first floor could see the people standing on the second floor.

"If I had some more time-" Mello's teeth gritted out as I stared at the glass wall on the first floor. It was a tall glass that had a small space to slide a thin book in between the space, but there was no door on the glass for a human to walk to the other side. With the second floor that I was standing on that probably meant...

"Mello," I called before he flinched from the use of his name on my lips. "You're actually not giving me back to my dad, are you?"

He flashed me a wicked grin before placing both his hands on his hips like an edgelord showcasing his broad back that was smaller than Light's.

"Why the hell would I give back such a good source of information?" He answered with a cackle before turning back to see the empty first floor.

"At first I wanted to use a missile for the Death Note to outsmart Near's satellite tracker, but that bastard," he chuckled with a twitch in his eye. "Destroyed it just a few hours ago."

I fell silent at his words before narrowing my eyes to try and find the scene from the anime. But I couldn't remember it. My mind was overall fuzzy in the second half, only a few of the scenes from Mello's death, fire, and Soichiro's deal with the eyes.

But satellite tracker?

My eyes glinted at the important information that I absorbed and changed my plan in my mind according to the tracker. Mello mentioned that it was for the Death Note, meaning that Near probably wasn't able to track Soichiro Yagami with that, only the Death Note as the expectation.

"Near and the fake L are working together," Mello calculated, bringing his hand under his chin before flashing a malicious grin. "Very well, it doesn't matter if the fake helps, Near will never win over me."

"I'm not against you for holding me hostage, but at least let me talk to my dad, not just show my appearance to him."

Secretly, I bit the inside of my cheek, drawing out several different ways I needed to move if dad could not get in contact with me. Mello shifted with an unwavering answer as I grimaced, not liking how this was turning out. If Mello didn't let me talk to Soichiro, I would never be able to tell Chia to move.

"Mello, if you don't at least give me five minutes with my father, I will not cooperate willingly, even if you force me." I snapped my eyes at him, threatening the boy who was the same age as the body I had right now. I saw him hesitate for a second before cutting his words with my own.

"Five minutes," panic sparked into rage from my rising tone. "Five minutes with him and I will tell you who the fake L is."

Mello's eyes widened like saucers before snarling at my tone, raising his own voice like we were in some kind of battle competition.

"How do I know you won't lie?! Also, there is no need for me to know who the fake is! It doesn't matter since I will find out sooner or later!"

Five minutes. That was all I needed to get everything under my control.

"Mello, you need information right now. How about I add some more information? I will tell you who L suspected the most as Kira."

Mello tightened his lips curiously before flickering his gaze at me.

"I do not need help, I will prove to everyone that I am the correct successor myself!" He said with a stiff voice. "Also, why are you so desperate to meet with your father?"

I pursed my lips and fakely sniffed, eyeing him with deliberate emotional vulnerability.

"You don't understand, Mello," I closed my eyes and squeezed my fists that were tied together in front of me. I turned my head away slightly, just enough to seem like I was trying to hide my face, but I knew the corner of my right eye was fully visible as I forced out a tear from my pupils, sniffing before raising both of my hands to wipe the tear away awkwardly.

"My dad has already lost his wife, he can't lose anymore, I can't risk that." I turned to face Mello's cold eyes as the inside of my mouth clicked its tongue in annoyance. Mello didn't buy my emotional talk. In the corner of my eyes, I also saw no emotion from the guards.

It wasn't because of my acting, no, it was because they simply didn't care for family attachments.

"Fine," I said simply. "If you let me talk to dad, I'll tell you the true successor that L chose before his death."

This time, my words finally piqued Mello's interests.

"True successor?" He echoed before I nodded, knowing that he had taken the bait.

"Look," I tilted my head with a confident smirk. "I know that you and Near are orphans from a place that trains geniuses."

Mello's face didn't flinch, only stood in silence as he let me prove my point..

"You are always ranked second to Near, that has been mentioned from L," I paused to build the suspension before nodding slightly at whatever Mello was thinking of. "That's right, L told me it willingly because he valued me as his partner."

"L never trusts anyone other than Watari," Mello nettled his voice despite it being a bit tamer than the previous shouts and hollers in his half-hearted interrogation. I flashed him a mocking smile before shifting my head back in place.

"Is that so? Well, unlike his mind, I specialize in interrogation."

"Even so," Mello hardened his gaze.

"That is why," I said in syllables. "You will never be able to get information out of me with force. For a person who specializes in that area, I know countless ways to verse the interrogation onto you."

"I will be willing to cooperate to answer all your questions, don't you also want to know why L died when interrogating me?" A sly smirk tugged the corner of my lips as Mello's reaction was more than a flinch.

"Tell me now!" He commanded before yanking my arm towards him. "Tell me why he died!"

I quivered in amusement before parting my lips and breathing in his face. Mello's expression instantly turned into disgust and shoving me away roughly like a doll. I chuckled at his childish reaction, knowing that he was not used to interacting with girls if he was solely trained to be like L.

After all, L had mentioned in the anime that he was awkward around girls. Most likely, he didn't see me as a girl since I was Light's sister. Well, L was probably asexual or went both ways.

"After his suspicions were proven wrong, the Kira task force lost faith in him," beginning my tale, Mello's face twisted into a vexed expression before grumbling out curses at the Kira task force.

"L was positively sure of his primary suspect, but he didn't have evidence. Might as I add, the suspect saw me as a love interest."

Just like that, Mello's eyes flared at the new information.

"He deliberately interrogated you so that he could prove-"

"Of course, he did not expect Kira to know his real name."

This time, I was the one to interrupt Mello. I rubbed my hands together, unwavering in confidence and I could see Mello start to hesitate on his own views of seeing me as an enemy.

Almost there.

"I am the only one who knows the primary suspect," I pushed a bit harder before pulling back. "Of course, you can handle it yourself, can't you, Mello? Prove that you are the successor without any help from a third party."

I sighed before shaking my head like I was disappointed at the child's behaviour.

"Too bad, L's death was all for nothing then. Even when he said that his successor he chose before death was-" I deliberately paused with wide eyes. Mello started to panic.

"Who was it?! Tell me! Who was his named successor?!"

I gave a half shrug before gesturing to my tied-up hands.

"Five minutes. That's all I ask for. After that, I will return to you and tell you his named successor."

Mello grimaced before turning back to face the bulletproof divider, mumbling something like, 'even if she knew, she couldn't change the mind of the organization.

"Even if I can't change the mind of the organization, wouldn't it make you feel better knowing that the organization was the one who went against L's true wishes?" I edged on as Mello snapped his mouth into a tight line.

"George, untie her and escort her to the side entrance." He turned his eyes suspiciously at mine before jerking the chocolate in his pocket and crunching it like a stress reliever.

"Five minutes."

"Thank you," I lowered my head before pursuing my lips in victory, seeing dad's silhouette enter the first floor before an orange hair cut my binds, gesturing to the door as I followed.

Five minutes was all I needed to destroy you.

"Dad!" I rushed to him with open arms as his face slouched with relief, shoulders humping forwards as he drew a long sigh, burying his face in my hair.

"Sayu, I'm so gla-"

"Dad, can you see the name of the blond kid with blue eyes on the second floor?"

Soichiro's eyebrows knitted in confusion before turning to glance at the second floor.

"Sayu, there's no nameplate or tag on him, how should I know?" He answered, expression a bit lost and concerned for my well-being.

"Sayu, are you okay-"

"How can you not know?!" I snarled furiously at the man.

Don't you have the shinigami eyes?!

The words didn't fly out of my mouth, only that it reminded me of the plot that had changed. That was right, in the anime when Soichiro blew up Mello's base, he had the eyes. I had thought that it was the time when Sayu Yagami was kidnapped-

But could it be that Soichiro had confronted Mello for a second time? Racking through my brain, I tried locating whose book was in whose hands right now.

If the Shinigami eyes could only be given to the owner, then dad was supposed to have Misa's book with Ryuk. But Light had never mentioned that he ordered Misa to lose the memories of being Kira- In fact, the book that dad was holding-

My mind raced to the cover of the book that was still in dad's hands.

That's not Misa's book, nor did I see Ryuk with dad.

Fuck.

I threw back my head as a splitting headache quaked through my brain. Dad yelled with concern and held my limp body that was spinning with chaotic lighting inside.

Fuck.

I got the timeline mixed up.

The original timeline never existed in the first place. I had trusted too much that things would turn out like the anime despite my occurrence in this world and my lack of memory for the second half.

Goddammit, where was my head?!

Then it occurred to me that Light had sent dad over because he thought I had some kind of plan.

Argh!

I did have a plan, but I messed up-

Bullshit, I'll improvise then!

"Chia!" I whispered furiously into dad's shoulder and hoped that the GSP speaker could pick up my voice. "Capture the blond kid with blue eyes! Plan C, now!"

It didn't make a difference. I repeated, watching the guard look at his watch and signalling me that I had two more minutes.

Even if dad didn't have the eyes-

There was a static buzz coming from the collar behind dad's coat as the base suddenly started to shake, sounds of alarms rang out from all directions as dad clutched protectively over my body, shielding me while cracks of sand started falling from the sky.

I heard the bellow of Mello's voice and the sound of guns blaring into the halls, screams and howls entered my ears as I pushed myself away from dad's embrace, darting my head towards the ceiling as I noticed we were underground. The base was sturdy, but-

Smoke started seeping into the room as dad jolted up with an appalled face, screaming at me to take his extended hand. I stared at it for a second before standing up calmly by myself, the noise of bullets and guns ringing as the glass divider behind us shattered, crashing onto the ground as I squeezed my eyes to avoid unnecessary shards from entering my eyes.

"Sayu!" Dad's gray hair caught my attention as he ran towards me and tried pulling me away from the tumbling place. I smiled slightly before yanking my arm back. Sweat was dripping from his face along with the wrinkles that stretched through his forehead, indicating his stress and old age.

His chin trembled, shaken from my actions.

Heartbroken by my actions.

He looked so helpless.

I could only laugh callously.

"Soichiro Yagami," I spit out before turning to study the shambled place that was still shaking slightly due to the explosion that Chia had set off. "Hand me the Death Note."

He stiffened at my words before his arm hesitantly lifted up, pulling the book from under his arm and holding it up to me as I slid it out from his grasp. I could see his hands tremble from his own actions, lips starting to turn blue. His eyes widened before opening his mouth, suddenly unable to speak.

Well, it was normal considering he probably wanted to question my actions.

Beads of sweat rolled down his face as a faint vein pulsed through his neck. His mouth twisted like broken cords as if he desperately wanted to speak, but an unbreakable force was holding him back. His eyes were frozen open, quivering with betrayal while his body shook like a fragile leaf.

Something inside me coiled when I saw his face, the chessboard that he bought as my first gift in both lifetimes rang out like a chime, a warning that I would regret his death even more than Isame's.

How did we turn out this way?

"Alyona!" I heard Chia's shout before I turned my gaze towards the exit of the room and motioned for the purple-haired assistant to cover for me as I shifted my head in dad's direction. Getting my signal, she yelled over the explosions at my members who scurried through the fire and smoke, grabbing the things that were on the ground.

Chia turned to me and gave me a gesture signalling that my mission I told her to do was complete. She mouthed the words 'blond' before turning around and running out of my sight. Satisfaction crashed down my shoulders as I sighed with triumphant, grinning from ear to ear.

Mello was successfully captured.

"Soichiro Yagami, you will stay here forever," I crinkled the corners of my eyes as dad's expression morphed white with horror. I walked past him calmly as I heard his silent scream of Sayu in his mouth before I turned around with an even bigger grin that seemed like it had carved into my cheekbones.

A smile that belonged to a devil's.

"Sayu- Sayu!" His voice rang out like a lost puppy, trembling as if his owner had abandoned him in the pouring cold.

How did we turn out this way?

My footsteps halted while the frown I had became apparent on my face before I shook it off forcefully. Fire and heat started blazing across the room as pitch-black smoke filled the halls.

He was going to die in the first place.

I told you not to get too attached to a side character.

"Sayu, please- For Light- I still need to take care of him!"

A scowl escaped my lungs as I turned towards him accusingly. Even now, he thought of Light being the better sibling. Even now, he sees me second.

Even now-

Biting my lips into a twisted grin, hatred swelled upon my face.

"By the way, Light as Kira ordered your death."

I watched as the desperation shook throughout his body, his head fell limply forward while gaping with white terror.

"Yes, dad, you gave birth to two mass murders," I threw my arms open, smiling sarcastically. "Rejoice!"

Waving at him for the last time with a small chuckle, I turned back and left the room.
