Jake Long III (Season Five)

Chapter/Episode Seven: Testing the Fu

Early the next morning, before the sun had even come up, Fu Dog was fast asleep on the bed inside his room when five hard knocks pounded at the bedroom door. The knocks barely had an effect on the sleeping shar-pei, who merely snorted before he rolled over onto his side.

After another three knocks, a barely awake Nayeli walked around the bed and started to head for the door, two more knocks pounding against the door. "Coming!" She croaked.

A few seconds later, Nayeli reached the door, grabbed the knob, turned it and opened the door, seeing Principal Dianuga outside in the hall. "It's too early." Nayeli croaked. "I'm too tired for this."

"Fu Dog is asleep, isn't he?" Dianuga sounded annoyed.

Nayeli just nodded.

Dianuga sighed, crossing his arms. "And here I go through all this effort..." He ranted softly to himself.

"I can take a message." Nayeli said. "Just as long as I can go back to sleep soon..."

"Fine." The principal replied, putting his hands on his hips. "But you need to tell him the second he wakes up."

"At this point..." Nayeli started to rub one of her eyes. "...I think he's going to wake up before I am."

"Just tell him as soon as you can!"

"Okay."

"I managed to reschedule his test with you for tomorrow afternoon." Dianuga informed. "It took a lot of time and effort, and I even had to bump one cat back, but I managed to do it."

"Sounds great." Nayeli managed a small, tired smile as Dianuga took a step back.

"Be sure to tell him." He repeated, pointing a finger at her.

"I will." Nayeli promised.

"Then that is all." Dianuga told her. "Sleep well." Then, he turned and walked away. Yawning, Nayeli closed the door to the room, going back to bed.

Later that morning, the door to the door to Fu Dog's room opened, and Encarna and Shae walked in, each carrying two boxes of food. Stopping after stepping into the room, the two girls could see that Fu Dog was still asleep, and that Nayeli was sitting at the foot of the bed, hugging her legs to her chest, her chin on her knees.

"Hey, is something wrong, Nayeli?" Encarna asked as Shae turned and used her foot to kick the door closed.

"No." Nayeli replied.

"Then what are you doing?" Shae asked as she turned around to face the girl at the foot of the bed.

"I'm just waiting for Fu Dog to wake up." Nayeli answered as she lifted her head up.

"Let him sleep." Shae said before she started to walk over to right side of the room. "I have his food, Encarna has yours."

"Do you want it?" Encarna asked.

"Sure." Nayeli answered, holding out her hands. "Toss it over here."

"Um, but if I miss, it'll end up a mess on the floor." Encarna replied.

"I'll be able to catch it." Nayeli smirked. "If you don't believe me, I'll prove it to you."

"How about I just walk it over to you...?" Encarna replied. Without waiting for a response from Nayeli, she started to walk over to her, and within a few seconds, she stopped in front of her and slowly crouched down. "Here." Encarna said with a small smile as she handed Nayeli her food.

"Thanks." Nayeli returned the smile as she took the box. As Nayeli opened the box, Encarna grunted as she sat down on her rear end. Then, Encarna opened her box of food.

Nayeli set her box of food down on her lap and reached in, taking the fork out of the box. "Nayeli?" The sound of Encarna's voice made Nayeli lift her head up to see Encarna looking at her with a confused look on her face. "Can I ask you something?"

"Sure, go ahead."

"Why are you waiting for Fu Dog to wake up?"

"You slept through it, but we got a visitor last night." Nayeli said before she put her fork into her food, taking out a chunk. Just as Nayeli put her food in her mouth, Encarna asked:

"Who?"

"Principal Dianuga." Nayeli replied with her mouth full.

"What did he say?"

Nayeli finished chewing her food and then swallowed before she replied: "He rescheduled our test for today."

LINE BREAK

Meanwhile, at a restaurant somewhere in New York, Lin-Lin, Regan and Jake III were sitting at an outside table, Jake III alone on one side of the table, while Lin-Lin and Regan sat on the other end.

"You will be happy to know, Jake..." Lin-Lin said as she focused on her food, Regan taking a sip of her drink. Lin-Lin looked up at Jake as she finished: "...That the Council did agree to giving us more missions."

"That's great." Jake replied as he reached into a small basket of french-fries. Taking one out, he popped it into his mouth. After chewing for a few seconds and then swallowing, he asked: "Hopefully the next one that comes to their attention?"

"Hopefully." Lin-Lin replied before she put her fork in her mouth.

"Perhaps we could check with the Dragon Council once we get back to the Island of Draco?" Jake suggested with a shrug.

"Maybe." Was the response he got from Lin-Lin, who was busy working on her food.

LINE BREAK

On the Island of Draco a short time later, both Lin-Lin and Jake III made their way to the Main Hall. "Okay, Jake..." Lin-Lin said. "...There may not any mission waiting for us..."

"We can only hope there is."

"Okay, but just don't think that your any less of a Dragon Council Agent just because there isn't." Lin-Lin told him. "You're no different than any other Agent. There are always downtimes. There are always time where there is nothing to do for days, maybe even weeks. It's natural."

"I understand, Lin-Lin." Jake replied with a small chuckle.

"I'm just saying." Lin-Lin defended herself. "It's natural."

"I know." Jake replied. "I just want to feel like I have more to do than I did when I was training with Cherri or the McClellans. I want some excitement. That's part of the appeal of being a Dragon Council Agent."

"I know." Lin-Lin said. "And believe me, there'll be plenty of excitement."

Seconds later, the two of them stepped into the Main Hall, where they found that Holly was the only one seated at the large table. As Jake and Lin-Lin started to walk further into the room, Holly was drawn away from the papers she was reading by the sound of their footsteps. Looking up, she was just in time to see the two stopping in front of the table.

"Can I help you?" Holly asked.

"We were just wondering if anything happened in the Magical World." Jake said. "Any possible missions for us?"

"No." Holly replied. "Not as of now. As far as we know, everything is going well throughout the Magical World this morning."

"I'm sorry, Jake." Lin-Lin said softly, turning her head to the side to look at Jake as he put his hands on his hips and sighed.

"Now what am I going to do today?" He muttered to himself.

LINE BREAK

In her room, Haley was lying on her bed, on her back, staring up at the ceiling. Upon hearing two knocks at her door, Haley rolled her head to the side to look at her door. "Who is it?" She asked. "Demetria, is that you?"

"Eh, why don't you come out and see for yourself, Aunt Haley?" Came the sound of Jake III's voice.

"Jake!" Haley's face lit up. "Jake, Jake come in!"

"Thanks." Came Jake's response before he opened the door and stepped inside, quickly turning to close the door, while Haley sat up on her bed. Haley watched as Jake turned away from the door and started to walk towards her. Within seconds, he stopped in front of her. "Hi, Aunt Haley." He said with a small smile.

"Jake." Haley could only smile as she slowly stood up and then grabbed him in a hug. "It's been awhile." She continued as she rubbed his back. "W...Weren't you assigned to keep Fu Dog safe while he went to go get a new license?"

"Mission completed, Aunt Haley." Jake replied just seconds before the two parted. "Do you want to hear about it?"

"Sure." Haley replied, smiling again.

LINE BREAK

Back at the Animal Guardian Academy, Principal Dianuga, Nayeli and Encarna were all seated in the front row of the arena, all looking down at Fu Fog and the dragon-formed Shae, both of whom were standing in front of a dragon-formed woman.

"Now..." The dragon-formed woman told Fu and Shae. "...So you don't start to panic, I'm going to tell you what's going to happen. In a few seconds, you will be surrounded in magical flames. The chemicals coming from the flames will rob you of your dragon powers, Miss Garland." Shae swallowed hard at this. "You will both have to find your way to safety by working together. Are you ready?"

"Eh, I guess." Fu replied.

"Very well." The woman replied, flaring her wings. "I wish you both luck." Then, she flapped her wings and flew into the air, leaving Shae and Fu Dog alone in the arena.

Shae and Fu Dog both waited for the fire to appear around them, both apprehensive. After about five seconds, the first flames appeared on the opposite side of the arena. Both Shae and Fu Dog swallowed hard as the flames quickly spread, almost as if someone had dropped a match on a long trail of lighter fluid. The flames spread all across the arena, going straight, going in circles, and zig-zagging all over the place. By the time the flames stopped moving, they were almost everywhere, with only a few spots of the arena that were safe to be.

Her eyes wide, Nayeli could only stare in awe. Finally, she turned her head to the side to look at the principal. "Is this going to be my test, too?" She asked.

"You'll just have to wait and see." Dianuga replied, crossing his arms.

Back in the arena, Fu Dog swallowed hard again as the chemicals coming from the flames forced Shae back into her human form in a bright light. As soon as the light faded, Fu Dog turned his head to the side. "Okay, kid..." He said, making Shae turn her head to the side as well. "...How are we going to get out of this one?"

"We need to find a way out." Shae said before she looked back down at Fu Dog. "Okay, here's what I'm thinking." She announced.

"Great!" Fu smiled. "Do tell."

"Well, you'd be my Animal Guardian, right?" Shae asked.

"Sure."

"So, in other words..." Shae continued. "...I rely on you to help me."

"Fair enough." Fu said. "It's supposed to be a partnership, th-"

Shae cut him off: "So, I think you should guide me through here."

Fu's smile completely vanished. "Say what?!" He asked.

"Would you rather burn to death?" Shae asked, narrowing her eyes.

"We're supposed to work together, kid!"

"We are." Shae insisted before she turned her head back to normal. "Come on, we need to jump over these flames."

"Are you insane?!" Fu asked.

"How else are we going to find a way out of here?" Shae challenged.

Just a few seconds after Shae said this, the sound of the woman's voice came over an intercom above them, making both Fu Dog and Shae look up as the woman spoke to them: "Need I remind you that you two are supposed to be working together? Arguing does not count as that. Consider this your one and only warning."

After the woman turned off the intercom, Shae looked back down at Fu Dog. "Come on." Shae insisted. "It's all we've got right now."

Taking a deep breath, Fu Dog exhaled slowly before answered: "Fine."

Together, the two started to run towards the nearest wall of flames. As soon as they reached the wall of flames, they both grunted and jumped as high as they could into the air. Fortunately, the two of them jumped high enough, and they both went over the wall of fire; however, they didn't avoid a close call- Fu Dog's four paws just barely missed the tip of the flames, while the toe-area of both of Shae's shoes went through the fire. She didn't seem to notice, however, and both fell back down to the ground.

While Fu Dog grunted as he landed hard on all four paws, Shae bounced off of her feet and started to roll towards the next wall of flames. "Kid, be careful!" Fu Dog tried to warn, but it did no good.

After turning to her side while rolling on the ground, Shae finally came to a stop a mere two inches away from the next wall of flames. While she didn't go all the way through the fire, her arm was not so lucky, as it went through the wall of fire, instead of her whole body. Immediately, Shae reacted, gasping in shock.

"KID!" Fu Dog shouted in panic.

BACK TO THE STORY/SHOW

"KID!" Fu had called when he had seen Shae's arm go through the wall of fire. However, only a second later, Fu saw the wall of flames vanish. All that was left was a perfectly undamaged net of sphinx hair, which fell to the ground.

"Huh?" Fu asked, cocking his head to the side.

Trembling, Shae started to climb to her feet. "Kid, are you alright?" Fu Dog asked as the startled girl looked at her arm. Although a little weak, it was perfectly fine. It was as if her arm hadn't gone through any fire.

"What just happened?" Shae asked as she lowered her arm.

"Well, kid..." Fu said as he started to walk over to her. "...It looks like the fire is really just a magic trick that was pulled on us. It's just sphinx hair, which explains why your powers were sucked from you and why you don't have third degree burns on your arms." After saying this, he stopped in front of her, turning his head to the side. He smirked. "I think I have an idea, kid." He told her.

"What?" Shae asked.

"The flames won't hurt us." Fu said as he turned to face her. "Well, at least me." He added when Shae gave him a look of disbelief. "So, what if I run through the fire, knocking all the nets down? That way, you can get around, and we can safely find a way out of here."

"Sounds good." Shae replied. "Let's do it."

Together, the two turned and started to run towards the next wall of fire. As they got closer and closer, Fu Dog grunted as he forced himself to run faster, and within a second or two, he passed Shae and jumped into the flames.

As Fu emerged from the flames, taking the sphinx hair net with him, Shae stopped in her tracks, waiting for the wall of fire to vanish. It quickly did, and Shae continued to run.

"This test doesn't look so hard..." Encarna pointed out as she, Nayeli and the principal continued to watch. "...Of course, I think they're cheating..."

Back down in the arena, Fu Dog burst through one final wall of flames, taking the net down. As he landed on his feet and as the wall of fire disappeared, Shae ran up to him. Together, they could see that there was another wall of fire ahead of them.

Breathing heavily, Shae turned her head in both directions, first to the right and then to the left. Upon turning her head to the left, she could see the exit to the arena, no fire guarding it. "There it is!" Shae declared happily.

Seconds later, the two turned and started to run to the exit. Within seconds, the two passed through the exit, Shae first, and then Fu Dog a second later.

Back in the stadium, Encarna, Nayeli and the principal watched as the rest of the fire walls disappeared into thin air. "I think I can do that." Encarna assured herself, just seconds before the woman came over the intercom again:

"Nayeli Rodrigo, you are up next." Upon hearing this, Nayeli sighed and slowly started to stand up.

"Good luck, Nayeli." Encarna said with a small smile, turning her head to the side.

"Thanks." Nayeli said as she turned her head to the side as well.

LINE BREAK

A short time later, Fu Dog and a still-human-formed Nayeli stood in front of the dragon-formed woman. "Your next test will be a little different, Fu Dog." The dragon informed. "Instead of trying to find your way out of an arena filled with fire, you will be working together to free this leprechaun from its cage."

Upon hearing this, both Nayeli and Fu Dog looked up to see a transparent cage hanging from a chain, high above their heads. "You'll need your dragon powers for this, Miss Rodrigo." The dragon said before Nayeli and Fu Dog looked back down at her.

The dragon-formed woman flared her wings. "As you will find..." The woman continued. "...There is a key on top of the cage. The cage can't be broken by your strength, Miss Rodrigo. The only way to get the leprechaun out is to find the keyhole and open the cage up. You two will have to work together to find it. Begin." With that, the dragon-formed woman flapped her wings and flew into the air.

Immediately, Nayeli transformed into her dragon form, quickly dropping down on all fours. "Get on!" She encouraged Fu, turning her head to the side. Turning, Fu Dog grunted and jumped onto her back, turning and lying down on her back. Then, Nayeli flapped her wings and took off into the air, hurrying up to the transparent cage.

Within seconds, Nayeli stopped at the cage's side, immediately catching sight of the key (which was attached to a chain so it could go around somebody's neck) in the middle of the top of the cage. Grunting, Nayeli flapped her wings once more and lifted herself even more into the air, allowing herself to reach out for the key with her tail, grabbing it.

Lowering back down to the side of the cage, Nayeli quickly tossed the key over her shoulder. "Fu Dog, catch." She told him. In response to this, Fu Dog grunted as he reached up with his front paws and caught the key.

"Do you have it?" Nayeli asked.

"Yeah." Fu replied.

"Okay, so here's my idea..." Nayeli told him. "...We need to check out each side of the cage. I can't see anything on this side, but that's probably part of the test. I probably need to feel for the keyhole."

"You sure about that, kid?"

"Would you rather miss it if that is the case?"

"Fine." Fu replied.

Without another word, Nayeli flew closer to the transparent cage and put her clawed hands on it, starting to feel around for a keyhole as Fu Dog looked over her scaly shoulder, seeing that the leprechaun inside was not a real leprechaun, but a stuffed toy, about the size of a beanie-baby.

After lowering herself a little bit and feeling around at the bottom of the side, Nayeli sighed and backed up. "No keyhole on this side." She reported.

"Then let's look at the next side." Fu said.

Nodding her head, Nayeli flew around the corner and started to feel around the side of the transparent cage while the principal, Shae and Encarna watched from their seats. Scoffing, Shae crossed her arms to the side, making Encarna turn her head to the side. "I can't believe it." Shae remarked.

"What?" Encarna responded.

"This is so much easier, and less dangerous, than my test."

"Yeah, well this seems a lot more tedious." Encarna said as she turned her head back to normal.

"I'd take tedious over potentially dangerous any day." Shae told her.

Seconds later, Nayeli reached the bottom of the side of the cage that she and Fu Dog were on. After about ten seconds of feeling at the bottom of the side, she balled her clawed hands into fists and flew back. "Nothing." She declared.

"Okay, before we go to the next side, can you let me make a suggestion?" Fu Dog asked.

"Be my guest."

"Well, in these kinds of tests, you know, when you have to locate something, it tends to either be in the last place you'd look, or right in front of you." Fu said.

"So?"

"So, what if it was right below the key and I just didn't notice?" Fu suggested.

"Don't be silly." Was Nayeli's response. "That's way too easy."

"Look, we need to work together." Fu told her. "I can look up there, while you check the last two sides of the cage. It'll save some time."

"Fine." Nayeli gave in, flapping her wings, flying upwards and allowing Fu Dog to jump over her head and land on top of the cage, the key now around his neck. Turning his head to the side, Fu Dog watched as Nayeli dove back down so she could check the last two sides of the cage.

Turning his head back to normal, Fu looked down and started to walk around the top, using his paws to feel around for a keyhole.

Back in their seats, Encarna blinked in confusion. "I wonder what they're doing." She wondered out loud. "Why are they splitting up? They're supposed to be working together."

Back up on the top of the transparent cage, Fu Dog reached the edge, having inspected the entire top of the cage. Sighing, he looked down over the edge, seeing Nayeli feeling at the bottom of the final side of the transparent cage.

"Let's hope it's down there." Fu said, just two seconds before Nayeli pulled away.

"It isn't." Nayeli replied, lifting her head up to look him in the eyes. "It wasn't up there?"

"No." Fu replied.

"Then where could it be?" Nayeli asked, but then her eyes widened. "Wait!" She declared. "There's one place we haven't looked..."

"...THE BOTTOM OF THE CAGE!" Both Nayeli and Fu Dog said in unison.

"Come on, Fu Dog!" Nayeli held out her scaly claws. "Hop down!" Nodding once, Fu Dog did as he was told; grunting, he jumped, Nayeli catching him. Seconds later, Nayeli swooped down to the bottom of the cage. The two of them in the middle of the cage, they both looked up to see that the keyhole was dead in the center of the bottom of the cage.

Both Nayeli and Fu Dog looked back down as Nayeli took one of her hands off of the shar-pei, keeping him under one of her arms. Using her free hand, Nayeli took the key off from around his neck. Looking back up, Nayeli reached up and put the key into the hole. Smirking to herself, Nayeli turned the key, the bottom of the cage opening up like a trap door. In response, the small leprechaun toy fell out, Nayeli easily catching it with her free clawed hand.

LINE BREAK

A short time later, Fu Dog was standing right in front of the dragon-formed woman, this time with the dragon-formed Encarna at his side. "For the final test..." The woman crossed her scaly arms. "...You two will have to work together to overcome the combined situations that Miss Garland and Miss Rodrigo were in." As both Encarna and Fu Dog reacted with shock, the woman continued: "You will be surrounded by fire that will remove your dragon powers, and without your powers, you will have to rescue the leprechaun from its cage. To do that, though, you will have to find the key."

"Well, at least that'll be easy..." Fu muttered. "...I know where they key is."

"The key is somewhere in this arena, Fu Dog." The woman said. "It's not on the top of the cage, like it was before. We moved it."

"Oh, great." Fu Dog rolled his eyes.

The dragon-formed woman flared her wings. "Begin." She declared before she flapped her wings, taking off into the air.

Swallowing hard, Encarna watched as the flames appeared all the way on the other side of the arena. Just like before, they quickly spread all around the arena, forcing Encarna into her human form in bright light. Just as the bright light vanished, leaving Encarna in her human form, Fu Dog quickly started to trot forward.

"Fu Dog, what are you doing?" Encarna called, making Fu Dog stop in his tracks and turned his head to the side.

"The only way you're getting up to that cage is if you get your dragon powers back." He said. "So, I'm going to take out the sphinx hair nets. Hopefully, I'll be able to find the key."

"A...Ar...Aren't we supposed to be working together?"

"We are." Fu replied with a small smile before he turned his head back to normal and started to gallop towards the first wall of flames. Once he got close enough, the shar-pei grunted as he jumped up, going through the flames. Coming out with the net, the flames vanished into thin air. Nervously, Encarna watched as Fu picked himself up and started to run towards the next wall of flames.

Within seconds, the panting dog reached the second wall of flames and threw himself into it, coming out of the flames, which vanished into thin air as he grunted, landing hard on the ground on top of the net.

Encarna continued to watch with a look of worry on her face as Fu Dog slowly got to his feet. The shar-pei started to walk forward, but after only one step, he stopped and glanced down, seeing the key to the transparent cage under the net.

Continuing to watch with a worried look on her face, when Encarna saw Fu Dog quickly turn and start to run towards her, she gasped. Within seconds, Fu Dog stopped in front of her, and as she took a step back and glanced down, she could see that Fu Dog was holding the key to the cage in his mouth by its chain.

Opening his mouth, Fu Dog dropped the key to the ground, then looked up at her. "There's the key!" He said. "Keep it safe while I get rid of the nets."

"Okay." Encarna replied. She then watched as Fu Dog turned and ran back towards the rest of the walls of flames. All by herself, Encarna knelt down and picked up the key.

As Fu Dog panted, running into the next wall of fire, knocking down the sphinx hair net, Nayeli and Shae watched from their seats. "Look at Fu Dog go..." Was all Nayeli said.

"Eh, he only knows how to do that because I figured it out the hard way..." Shae said.

Back in the arena, Encarna continued to watch as Fu Dog ran into one of the last two walls of fire, taking down the net, the fire once again vanishing into thin air. Groaning as he slowly got to his feet, Fu turned his head to the side, seeing only one wall of fire left.

"Come on, Fu Dog..." Fu said as he turned towards the wall of fire. "...Just one more. Then, it'll be all over." Grunting, the shar-pei forced himself to charge forward. After running for about ten seconds, he jumped into the wall of fire and came out with the net. As he fell to the ground, the fire vanished into thin air.

Groaning, Fu lifted up his head, seeing Encarna standing several feet away. "Kid, it's done!" Fu shouted at her. "Go for it!"

Quickly nodding her head, Encarna transformed into her dragon form in a bright light. As soon as the light vanished and she was in her dragon form, Encarna flapped her wings and flew into the air.

"It's at the bottom of the cage, right?" Encarna asked as she continued to fly up to the cage.

"Yeah!" Fu replied before he dropped his head down to the floor.

Within seconds, Encarna stopped just below the bottom of the suspended transparent cage. Quickly spotting the keyhole, she reached up and put the key in, turning it and letting the cage open up, the leprechaun falling down into Encarna's clawed hands.

The tests were done.

LINE BREAK

A short time later, Nayeli, Shae and Encarna sat together in the room where they had first met Fu Dog.

"I wonder how long they're going to make us sit here..." Shae muttered.

"Probably not too much longer." Encarna replied. "I'm just glad the tests are over."

"For one of us." Shae replied, crossing her arms. "The only question is which one of us that will be."

At that moment, the door to the room opened, Principal Dianuga and Fu Dog stepped inside. :I guess we'll find out now..." Was Encarna's response.

As Fu smiled at all three of the girls, the principal turned and closed the door behind him. Then, he turned back around to face the girls. "So, did you decide which one of us gets Fu Dog as their Animal Guardian?" Nayeli asked.

"We did." Dianuga replied.

"Well?" Shae asked.

Dianuga smiled, holding up a hand. "But first..." He said. "...I want to go over your tests with each of you. I want to highlight your strengths...and identify your weaknesses."

All three girls swallowed hard.

"Shae, I'll start with you." Dianuga crossed his arms. "You and Fu Dog did exactly what you were supposed to do. You found a way out of your situation." Hearing this, Shae's look of dread was replaced with a small smile. "However..." Upon hearing this, Shae's smile completely faded. "...You two did not work together very well. And unfortunately, that was part of the test. Encarna..." He moved on to Encarna. "...The same thing applies to you. You were able to complete the task, which is very impressive. However, you didn't work very well together. Now, I will say that you worked better with Fu than Shae did, but Fu Dog seemed to do most of the thinking. Nayeli..." He moved on to Nayeli.

Dianuga smiled. "You not only completed your task, but you also worked well with Fu Dog. You both came up with ideas and you split up so that you were each doing something. Fu Dog checked the top of the cage, while you checked the sides. I particularly liked how you both used your heads and deducted that the keyhole was on the bottom of the cage. Overall..." He continued. "...You each had your own strengths and weaknesses, but there was a clear winner.

"Nayeli, congratulations. You now have an Animal Guardian."
