Chapter 65
"Misa," Light fell onto the floor in front of Misa's corpse that was laying on top of the hospital bed as the rest of the Kira force hurried into the room with pale faces after seeing Light's dishevelled state on the ground, sobbing lightly compared to the funeral with his dad.
Matsuda opened his mouth before Aiwaza shot him a look, shaking his head before turning his head towards Light who kept on murmuring the words, 'I'm sorry,' to the dead corpse. I was silent, staring amusingly into my hands while sneakily taking glances at the Kira Task members who exchanged worried and sympathetic gazes towards their leader of the Kira Force, which was Light.
Ide shook his head towards Aizawa's slow gesture before they both nodded at each other in silence. It was amazing how they were communicating without words and somehow understood each other. I had no idea what they were about to do, but I could understand the gist of what they were trying to do, which was to leave Light in peace.
"Light," I saw Aizawa open his mouth before slowly trudging towards the young adult Light. Aizawa patted him firmly on the shoulder before opening his mouth again, this time with more hesitance than he could ever have.
"I'm sorry for your loss," his voice was grave before he turned around to leave with the gang.
"It's all Kira's fault," Light spit out before wiping his tears away with his thumb. Everyone in the room halted except for me, who was still covering my eyes in order to give a sense of grieving towards the dumb heroine girl of Death Note.
"Kira is directly trying to threaten us by killing someone important to the Task Force."
"But-how does Kira know that Misa Amane is related to the Task Force?" Matsuda questioned out feebly, staring at the body that was covered with a white blanket. Ide nodded along with Matsuda, drawing out a long sigh before speaking.
"Light, I know the stress that Kira has put you through, but baseless accusations-" Ide's crop black hair shifted on his forehead when he saw Aizawa shake his head.
"Ide, I think I understand what Light is trying to say," Aizawa stared at Light's unwavering eyes before explaining. "You're implying that Near is Kira?"
Light said nothing, only stared back at Aizawa, giving silence as his answer. Well, cue my entrance.
"There's no other conclusion!" I jumped up, earning a flinch from the members except for Light who fully knew I was going to interrupt. It wasn't at all planned nor did Light tell me beforehand what to say or do, but all my actions were already calculated in Light's mind.
The wetness on my face indicated my heartbreak at Misa's death.
"Misa," tears rolled down my face again, earning pitiful sounds from Matsuda who rushed over and patted me on the shoulder, giving me his handkerchief as I thanked him for his kindness. "The only people who knew Misa was related to the Kira Taskforce would be us, including all the information that L sent to the orphanage!"
Aizawa's eyes widened at the information before hastily questioning what information did L send to the orphanage. It was surprising to know that Light hadn't told them about what L did the last hand before his death, but it was also a good space to improvise the act.
"Light didn't want to tell you because he wasn't sure of his accusations towards Near, but-" I purposefully looked towards my brother who was grinning inside his eyes as he took the reins from my hand. I had purposefully added my sentence to make Light seem much more careful and mature about his decisions.
"L had sent all the information about the primary suspects for Kira to the two successors," Light confirmed as he blinked his moist red eyes before sniffing a couple of times, turning his face towards the body of Misa. Light's words had kept the fact that L had also sent the rules of the Death Note to both Near and Mello, trying to leave the reins to someone else to catch.
It was a smart move because in that way, the members did not have time or the correct angle to assess Light's expressions. From my angle though, I could tell there was a dark smirk curled onto Light's lips as his eyes flashed cunningly red.
"L probably wanted a backup if he died but he didn't take into account that his successors are Kira."
"I understand that Near was against you, but do you have any foolproof evidence?" Aizawa said quietly before pondering on Light's suggestion.
"Near wants the book," Matsuda murmured beside me as Ide and Aizawa followed his voice. It was so like Matsuda's personality to answer questions instead of Light during an intense moment. From the glint in Light's eyes, I could tell that Light was expecting it after what had happened in the hallways when Matsuda revealed information to me.
"Yes," I breathed, nodding as if I just realized the truth. Beside me, Matsuda's mind whirled further with my support beside him.
"It all makes sense! How Near knew about the 13-day rule without ever getting the notebook himself! Why Near was trying to tear our group apart-why Near was trying to bring Mogi onto his side, and why both the successors were aiming for the Death Note, and yet failed because of Chief Yagami's actions!"
Everyone winced at the name of dad. Matsuda probably didn't know that the name brought up more sympathy than what he intended, but it worked.
"The numbers also match up!" Matsuda threw open his arms as he raised his voice. "We know that there are two Kiras, Kira one who does not have the eyes, and the second Kira who does!"
"Two of the successors were working with each other," my eyes intentionally widened before turning towards Matsuda as if it was his idea. In the past, I had mentioned that implied that both successors were working with each other, how it now seemed as though they didn't take my words into account that deeply.
Now it was the exact time to spell it out for them.
"Near probably told Mello to set up the kidnapping incident so that he could bait us into giving the Death Note to him indirectly," my eyes narrowed at the wall. "Mello is the one who has the eyes, that's why-"
"-That's why Near hasn't killed us even when we revealed our faces," Light nodded at me, adding onto the direction I was going.
The fact was that Soichiro's death was basically set by the two successors. The realization rang into everyone's minds as they held their breaths. What was even scarier was that Kira was two children who had gotten the book. No wonder Kira was so childish as L described him to be and had a strong sense of justice yet ignored the laws. For children, laws were only rules that were meant to be broken.
It also made sense how L was led to believe that Kira was Light, since the two successors were trying to confuse everyone by pushing the blame onto someone else. Light had given everyone reason and evidence that L had pushed onto Light, now directing it to the two kids.
The 13-day rule.
Everyone in the task force had witnessed the rule that proved Light to be innocent.
By now the colour upon Aizawa and Mogi's face had completely slipped away, turning pale before Mogi lowered his head towards Light apologetically.
"Light Yagami," Mogi stated before bowing a complete 90 degree before apologizing. Light's eyes softened before walking towards the large man to pat him on the back.
"It makes sense," Matsuda barely whispered as his voice echoed into the member's minds. It was set, now no one would suspect Light anymore and rather, Near was now deemed as Kira.
The rest of the talk in the room held grave consequences as I excused myself out, telling them that I shouldn't be in the room as an excuse to make a call towards Near. When the line picked up and I heard Near's monotone voice, I spoke.
"You will video call the Kira Taskforce tomorrow in the morning, saying that you have got full proof of who Kira is. You will tell them that you will prove the 13-day rule to be incorrect and will set up a meeting day on…"
I glanced at the date. It was July 3rd.
"You will set a meeting day on July 13th, 10 am," I then gave him the location I had my eyes on for the past week.
"You will tell them that you have caught Kira the second red-handed, and will use him to prove the first Kira. Ask Light Yagami to also bring the Death Note that he has in his possession or else you will deem Light Yagami as Kira directly. After this call, write the name Teru Mikami on the pages that Mello sent you."
I paused a bit before glancing inside the empty hall.
"His cause of death shall be: shooting all members of the NPA except for Light Yagami, the real Kira, then suicide."
With that, I hung up.
I pressed in the numbers towards Chia's phone. The dial rang four times before she picked up.
"What are your orders, Alyona?"
I smiled discreetly.
"Write Riku Yamamoto's name on the Death Note with the cause of death, bringing all pages of the Death Note to base Castor. He will die in a car crash after he leaves."
"Understood," Chia replied immediately before hanging up. I then entered the phone number to Anthony, telling him of the current situation.
"Got it, what's the time?"
"July 13th, 10 am. Will you be able to make it there?"
"I will even if it shortens my lifespan, Alyona."
I heard his smile in his voice before laughing, hanging up the phone before making the last call to Mello.
"Miheal, you will go to this location on July 13th, 9 am with the Death Note," I told him the location of the empty warehouse. "There is a staircase leading up to a walkway that goes around the warehouse. Go up the stairs and hide behind the wooden boxes. When you hear me calling 'Miheal', write all names in that warehouse."
With that, I finally shut my phone down.
Mello served as a backup in case Near was not fully killed by Anthony's members. My plan was simple: head over to the meeting with or without Light depending on whether or not he allowed me to go in there. Since my name was invincible on the Death Note, it didn't matter if Mello had written my name on there.
I would tell Anthony to wait outside of the warehouse, guarding the door in case anyone were to come in.
I closed my eyes and sunk deep into the cushions of my couch, waiting for Light's return. I honestly had nothing to do but wait, since everything depended on what happened on July 13th. Something in my stomach leaped uncomfortably, twisting and lurching at the same time at the thought.
Light would die.
The thought unnerved me and made me queasy.
"Love is nothing," I gasped out before burying my face in my hands. "This is so small compared to what I will attain."
But would I find someone like Light again? Would I be able to trust myself again to love? Would I even...meet someone that could make me feel the way Light was able to? I loved Light, and that was scary knowing that he was the only one out there. There was only one Light, once he was gone, he was gone.
Like Isame.
No one would be able to replace what Isame did. No one was able to replicate what she wanted, what she meant to me. Not even if the same person came up to me, looking identical to her and having the same personality. What was different was the memories. Even if Light were to have a duplicate if he didn't have the same experience, the same memories, was he even the brother I had? I didn't want to kill him. I didn't.
What seemed so small was actually a huge boulder to shoulder. I knew, the moment I pulled the trigger at Light, I would collapse in tears. I knew I would be depressed, missing him, but for how long exactly? At least I had Anthony and Tsubame to hold me back. If I were to do anything reckless, they were the two that I would go to.
I heard the beep of the elevator before raising my head above the couch and seeing a Light who was grinning widely at me.
"Light," I greeted as he stepped onto the floor with his socks, sliding into his slippers before he stood in front of me, turning my chin to look at him. I let him, obediently looking into his eyes as I found them so mesmerizing as usual. They were deeper, overwhelmed with joy and knowing nothing of the future he had.
"Sayu, did you return the Death Note you had to the Death God?"
I raised my eyebrows, looking at him before smiling softly. He was talking about Sidoh, the God who had bothered him but Light ignored. He probably already knew what I did, thinking that I had acted as a good girl and returned the book in order for him to stop bothering me. Without God following me, it was already a really obvious answer.
Light took my silence for a positive statement before nodding and sitting down on the couch despite my body that was lying lazily on the mattress. Light's long fingers fluttered to my face and caressed me as I hummed comfortably before rubbing my cheeks against his cold hand like a cat.
"July 13th," he echoed with excitement. "Soon all will be ours."
I really loved the way he said 'ours' instead of 'his', but he didn't know that he was wrong. All will be mine, without him. The feeling resonated like a crescendo in A minor, negative and ringing its sorrows against my chest.
"Everything will be ours," I repeated before lifting my body, pulling him slowly into a deep kiss. He smirked against my actions, mistaking them for celebration instead of a parting. I followed him as he rocked on the couch, him pushing me down with a flushed face before asking for more.
This was the last time.
I let him.
July 13th came in a blink of an eye when you were dreading the event. It came too fast, too quiet. I couldn't bear to be in the same warehouse as Light while he knew I was carrying a gun. Today morning he pecked me on the lips, telling me to stay home and wait for the good news. I nodded before pulling him into a hug, worried and desperate to not let him go.
His warmth filled my arms the last time before he patted me to let him go with an amused smile, not knowing the reason behind my sad eyes. He left without another word as I instantly phoned Anthony who was waiting nearby at a hotel, bringing 6 men along with him as he flashed me a comforting grin before passing me a pistol.
I held it in my hands, looking at it blankly before I counted the time, and entered the car with him. In my ear was an earpiece that connected a listening wire on Mello. I could hear everything that was happening in the warehouse. Light's voice was casual before pointing out his suspicions of Near being Kira. Near had bought five men along with Roger by his side.
Everything lined up in his plan as I heard Aizawa, Ide, and Matsuda's demand for an explanation of Soichiro's death. Near batted them off nonchalantly before welcoming Mikami into the warehouse. Anthony positioned his guards outside of the gates before heading along with him. I told him to stay outside to leave some time for Light and me, and he agreed hesitantly, squeezing my hand and telling me to do the right thing for everyone.
But Anthony did not know what everyone was to me. If Light left me, then 80% of that everyone was gone. I numbed myself before nodding hesitantly, walking further into the area before pressing my back to the door that was closed after Mikami's entrance.
Their voices echoed in my ear before the alarms of gunshots rang throughout the warehouse, me hearing Mogi's grunt in the process before the familiar sound of bodies splattered on the ground. I could instantly tell that Mikami had failed, Aizawa and Matsuda's voice yelling overhead as the gunshots disappeared.
"Mello," I spoke slowly before hearing Mello's confirmation over the screaming. "Write the names of Near's bodyguards onto the paper. Cause of death, trying to kill the Kira Task Force members. Write Roger's name too, cause of death, suicide."
There were no sounds coming from Ide nor Mogi, only the task force members who were screaming at their name. I heard Light's alarm that was only slightly panicking, asking Near what explanation he was able to give.
"This is foolproof evidence, Near. You have lost. You are Kira."
It was just around that line from Light, before other gunshots rang out in a panic, Matsuda and Light both screaming as Roger, Near's caretaker bolted out of the warehouse and ran in a limp stagger towards the open grounds while his eyes were blank.
The moment the gunshots stopped, I pivoted into the warehouse, pulling out the gun as my eyes landed on Matsuda who was crawling over the dead body of Aizawa, howling as he pointed to Near.
"He's Kira!" Matsuda screamed in my direction, eyes out of focus and had nothing but hatred plastered onto his innocent face. His eyebrows were ragged up into a single line along with his red face and sweat that was falling off his forehead. Light was standing behind him with a dark expression, barely containing his calm as he stared at me with jagged breathing.
Ryuk on the side was perched on the rails of the second floor, staring at us with a malicious grin.
"Kill him! He's Kira!" Matsuda shrieked as I pointed my gun towards Near, turning my eyes slightly as Near paled.
"Kill him!"
I obeyed, pulling the trigger as Near's skull flew backwards, eyes wide as the blood spurted out of his head, spitting across the floor just before his body thudded onto the cold and blood-filled ground. I felt Matsuda sob in relief for a split second as I directed my gun at him. The sound of my bullet echoed the space as Matsuda collapsed onto the ground, holding his chest as he gasped at me, pointing accusingly.
"Well, I don't need you anymore," was all I had to explain before walking towards Light, whose hand fell limply beside his own body, his own gun in hand. Matsuda choked before spasming on the ground, the blood in his face slipped away as fast as the blood that was seeping onto the bodies that were all lying on the ground.
I watched slowly as Matsuda cried out a simple 'why' before I shrugged.
"You were helping Kira all along," I gestured to my brother who was bathed in blood. He stood there with eyes only on me, as if I was an enemy. They raged with nothing but confusion and shock before Matsuda's wide eyes froze from my statement, slowly closing before he plopped onto the ground, dead.
"That ended well," my voice came out colder than I thought. The insides of my lungs were screaming at me, telling me to stop but I ignored it. My head turned to survey the area, finally landing on my brother who's hand twitched on his trigger.
"Congratulations, brother, you have become King," I made a dramatic curtsy before raising my weapon at him. "Only temporarily, though."
My face was emotionless as his eyes flared with betrayal. He said nothing though, only aiming his own weapon at my face.
"I've won, brother," I said softly as his face hardened.
"You've planned this from the beginning," his lips pursed with disgust. "You've been lying with me in the beginning."
I scoffed at his remark.
"Not entirely, I was just finishing my promise I made with myself the moment I became your sister."
A flash of horror passed onto his face before he closed his eyes, reopening them with a twitch in his eye. He was aggravated and devastated, not for the loss of his sister, but at the thought that all my words I had said to him in the past were lies.
What did I mean by 'blood runs thicker than water?' That was bullshit.
"Yes, Light. Body possession does exist, even I was confused the moment I woke up in Sayu Yagami's body," I chuckled without tearing my eyes off of him. Lines crossed his overly perfect face that had splatters of blood. Bitter disgust crossed his face as he grinded his teeth.
But suddenly, the anger from his face disappeared.
He opened his eyes, looking more fatigued than angry. As if he had accepted what I had done to him.
"You really think you've won?" His voice softened to only a whisper.
"Haven't I?" I tilted my head with an innocent smile. "Do you really think that you can kill me?"
It was a rhetorical question. He knew himself that he wasn't able to kill me. I had given him so many chances, so many reasons.
It hurt. It really really hurt.
I wanted to wail, to tell him that I was lying. That he had a sister, that I was his sister. I wanted to stop my actions, but my hand held the weapon firmly as if the waves crashing inside me were nothing of concern. My stomach twisted and coiled, it ticked and clawed at my skin.
I saw Light close his eyes as his hand trembled in mid-air. His lips were pressed into a straight line as the waves of conflict flickered through his face. Agony and heart-wrenching pain.
Very slowly, his arm was lowered as if something was forcing it down.
I wanted to cry.
I'm so sorry, Light.
I'm so sorry-
"What," he whispered hoarsely. "What is your name?"
"It doesn't matter," I lowered my face away from him, the first time in my life that I had taken my eyes off the enemy. "Nothing matters anymore."
"Sayu," he called as I gave him a half-hearted smile. Tears were legit pouring out of my eyes as realization and hope flickered across his face. "You don't want this."
His words grasped onto the thin hope as I wavered.
"You don't want this, Sayu," he pressed harder as my hand loosened, gun clattering onto the ground as I gasped before desperately trying to pick it up, only to hear Light's own gun clattering onto the floor. My vision blurred as I buried my face into my hands, trying my best not to sob.
"Sayu," I heard him soothe as he came towards me, crouching down at my eye level before lifting my face in his hands. "Sayu, I love you."
I shook my head as silent screams enveloped my trembling body again. If Light was doing this to lower my guard, he was doing a very good job.
"Sayu, trust me."
I felt his warm hands grasp me warmly before I tried peering into his desperate face. It was the first time I saw him hang on so desperately. He seemed so fragile, so broken that he would fight the whole world for my sake. I tried believing that Light was still manipulating me, but I couldn't.
Light completely let his walls down for me. He was so fragile. So fragile that he seemed like he was going to break.
"Light, Light," I hyperventilated with sobs as my hands snaked around his neck, trying to feel his warmth. "I'm so sorry, I don't want to kill you-I'm so sorry-"
"I can't leave you," I whispered out as his hold on me tightened. I was so desperate as if he was the only thing keeping me alive. In the corner of my mind, I heard the echoes of footsteps but I couldn't register them into my head.
"Light, I love you," I sobbed and gripped his coat tighter. "I love you-"
It was in that split second before I could even whisper out another sentence when Light's body yanked me around, shielding me as the echo of a gun was fired. My mouth was wide with terror as I watched Light's mouth spurt out blood, accidentally spilling some droplets onto my face.
His body sunk down as I held him in my arms, Anthony's shadow registering in my eyes. My face jerked down to Light in my arms, seeing a bullet wound near his chest.
"L-Light?" My voice was wobbling. "Light?"
I yanked my lost expression to Anthony who was holding his gun in his hands, aiming it callously at me with his forced expression.
"Why?" I squeaked out, my blood running cold as the body I held was also slipping away in warmth. I was paralyzed for a full minute before I grappled the spot that was spilling out blood, trying to cover it with my hands that were shaking. But nothing was working, the blood seeping through my hands.
"Medic-" my voice was ragged as I looked around in distress.
"Medic!" I screamed in hysteria. "Hospital-Light, hang on-"
I heard a loud click in Anthony's hands as I turned to him, frozen. It took me a second before I lowered my head as far as it could go. My crimson hair spilled over my trembling shoulders, mixing in with the colour of Light's blood.
"Anthony, please-please let me go find him a medic-please- I can't let him die-"
My eyes were quivering as he laughed. No, he wouldn't let me get the medic. No.
Anthony had betrayed me.
"Why…?" I breathed, devastated. "Why-Why are you doing this?!"
I felt Light breath under me, trying to catch his breath as I jerked my head at Anthony.
"Why?!"
Where was my gun?
I need to get the medic-
Light-Light!
"M-" my voice cracked. "Miheal!"
Everything around me was swirling as Anthony cocked his head with a bitter expression.
"Miheal or whoever will not save you now," he said slowly before raising his arm higher at my head. "You really don't know how the Mafia works."
"Why, Anthony?!" I screamed at him, tears flowing down my eyes. "We-we made a promise-"
"Promises are nothing in the mafia world, Alyona."
The words rang through my head as I felt Light shudder underneath me. I held him tighter to my chest, trying to spread my warmth to him.
Hold on, Light.
Please, hold on!
"My mother ordered me to take the power of Kira and kill you," he said curtly as his finger twitched in his hand. "I have no need for you since I've seen the object on the plane."
Why was 40 seconds so long?
Why was it taking so long?!
"Who knew that Kira's powers originated from pieces of paper?" I heard him laugh as my eyes were filled with fear. Fear for Light.
"Light-hold on-hold on-"
"I really like you, Alyona."
I flicked my head up towards him and scowled at his lies. He only laughed bitterly, shaking his head.
"If only you were normal, Alyona. If only you wer-UGh-"
Anthony cried out as his hand flew towards his chest, clutching it as he fell onto the ground. I tried pushing myself off the ground, but Light's body was too heavy.
"Light!" I sobbed. "Light, please! You can't do this to me!"
My feet trembled as I tried lifting him again, only to fall onto my knees as he let out a groan. His face was deathly pale, eyes swimming in his frames.
"You can't do this to me!" I shrieked, balling my fists as tears dripped onto his chest. "Light, You can't do this to me!"
"You've won this game, Light! I don't want to win anymore. Don't take away the only thing that I have left in this world!" I begged Light, I begged him. Light's lips only faintly cracked into a smile, too tired to laugh at me.
"I hate you! I hate everything you took away from me!"
I buried my face into his chest, hiccuping as tears streamed down my face.
"...Light, please."
"Sa...yu…" I heard him croak out. Lifting my face, I could see the shimmer in his eyes slowly dim as he smiled weakly at his own situation.
"You...wi...ll...ne..ver...esca...pe...me."
Light closed his eyes, almost blissfully before falling completely limp.
I stared at him, stunned.
Ah…
I lifted my teary eyes and stared up at the sky.
...I'm used to losing everything anyway.
