Jimmie's home.
Saturday, June 30th, 2018
James "Jimmie" Cyrus Greengrass-Potter couldn't sleep, and he had tossed and turned all night long at Potter Manor. What little he did sleep, he had dreamed about his fiancée, Goodnight. Well, Goodnight was his childhood nickname for the young witch who lived not far from Potter Manor at Tedburn St Mary. They had gone to primary school together since they were seven, and in the same village where her father took over a local hotel and pub called The King's Arms. The hotel was a large stuccoed Tudor with a thatched roof, and it was located on Hushlane End, which was the main street through the village.
Goodnight's real name was Mary Gudmundsson, and her grandfather was a Swedish wizard who had moved to York. Her father, William "Bill" Gudmundsson, had moved to Tedburn St Mary with she and her mother, Bella Farley. Her mother was a sister to one of Jimmie's father's operatives, Gemma Farley, who run the security monitor desk at the new MoM. Goodnight's mother had went underground with her father during the Death Eaters rise in 1997. None of the Farleys had sided with Voldemort, and they helped in the underground to move many muggle-borns and half-bloods out of Britain, or they placed them in safe houses. Lee Jordan's Potterwatch had announced the family as missing in order to throw the Death Eaters off their trail.
Here, Jimmie rolled onto his back, and stared up at the dark ceiling. What a surprise it was, Jimmy thought, when he had found that he wasn't the only magical, besides his two brothers and sister, attending Tedburn St Mary's School. His sister was also as thick as a thief with his soon-to-be wife, though he would have two years of marital bliss with his wife before his sister graduated, and the two young witches began their plotting and planning.
Jimmie had nicknamed Mary, Goodnight, because he couldn't pronounce her surname at the time with his missing front teeth. He obtained the idea from a Bond film, and amazingly, today, she did resemble that same Goodnight to a great degree. She was a very beautiful blond with about the same build, and she was his best friend. However, she was nowhere near as scatterbrained as the spy portrayed in the film. She was also sorted into Slytherin House with him on their first day at Hogwarts.
Merlin, Jimmie thought, it had bothered him more than he let on when he had to leave her for a year on the Spooky Too. During that trip, and toward the end, was a real wake-up call for him, when one of their operatives was murdered in Lisbon Portugal. What a damn bloody mess that all was, Jimmie thought, and then sighed as he stood from his bed in nothing but his boxers. Here, he walked over to his desk, and looked out at the front roundabout, as his window was directly over the manor's front entry. Here, all those memories came flooding back.
In the past: Saturday, April 16th, 2011
It was now three o'clock in the afternoon, and Jimmie was having the time of his life at The Cove, which was a private beach not far from their second home in Jamaica. They had set up a bandstand out in the water made up of metal tubing and struts, where a live band was playing. His father was sitting in a lounge beside his uncle David on the beach, as were a few others from the MIA that were in the area. He noticed his mother and his aunt Debbie discussing something as they waited for their drinks at the Tiki Bar. Lily Helen was standing beside them in a small one piece, and she was drinking a non-alcoholic "virgin piña colada" from a plastic Dixie Cup.
Jimmie was trying to do "the twist" while dancing with a young Jamaican girl that was their neighbor, and while holding a can of Coke in his left hand. Her father ran the old Sussex Estate spice plantation that their home had once been a part of. She was a beautiful Jamaican girl, with a bright smile, and he knew that she had the hots for him, but she was no Goodnight. No, his love was back in the UK, and he would stick with her, even though the young British witch didn't know it yet.
He slowed down a little, and belted out a booming laugh, as he pointed over a dancing Markey, Little Harry, Al, and Scorp's heads at CO McKnight, who was wearing a bright red speedo, and dancing with a "chick" that he had met at Goldeneye. McKnight, who Jimmie had heard helped train their operatives, was wearing a red plastic baseball helmet on his head, and on either side was a holder that held two bottles of Red Stripe beer. A tube came from the bottles and into his mouth like a straw, and he was drinking from that, while holding his arms up in the air, and giving two peace signs while still twisting along with the lady. Jimmie thought the officer hilarious, and so did Teddy, who had also caught on, and had let out a loud laugh beside him.
That was when things went to shite, as Jimmie noticed his da' answer his secure cell phone, where a cold look came over his face. He watched his da' sit forward in the lounge, and hang his head. Here, Jimmie slowed down, and eventually stopped dancing with a look of concern on his face. Teddy noticed it too.
His uncle David sat forward, and whispered something to his da' where they had a conversation that none could overhear. Finally, the two stood, and quickly made their way over to his mum and aunt Debbie, where they put their heads together and began speaking. Next, both women hugged their husbands, and Jimmie could see their shoulders shaking. They were crying.
"Teddy," Jimmie said, as he nodded toward his parents, but then looked back around at his dance partner. "Amy, I'm sorry, but I've gotta go - somethin's up."
"Course, Jimmie," Amy smiled.
Here, Jimmie kissed the young girls hand, and started walking quickly across the beach to his parents over by the Tiki Bar. Teddy was following behind him.
It didn't take long for his da' to tell Teddy and he to collect their brothers and sister, and come straight back to them. Next, they quickly collected their things, and made their way back to the two Land Rovers, where they headed home in a rush.
Once they arrived, the Graves went next door, and began locking up their house, as they did theirs as well. While it was just he and his father standing on the back sleeping porch, Harry laid his hand on Jimmie's shoulder, and sighed.
"Jim," Harry explained, "we've had a death. They killed Lee's wife, Alicia, in Lisbon.
"Do you see it now, Jim? Do you see what I mean? This work is dangerous, so, are you sure that you want to go down this road one day?"
"It's gotta be us, Da'," Jimmie said with a sigh. "We Potters keep that eternal flame burnin'." Here, Jimmie looked out at the Caribbean one last time. "We have to do it, Da', because nobody else will."
Here, Jimmie smiled at his father, turned, and walked back into the house, while Harry finished locking up.
They hadn't intended on leaving for a few more days, and that would have been on the Spooky Too, but not now. No, now, they were taking an international portkey back to Potter Manor ASAP.
Present time.
Jimmie shook his head, and stared out at the fog rising in the vineyard that was just over the hill, as daylight was just now breaking over the rolling British countryside. Here, another harsh memory hit him.
Saturday, April 23rd, 2011
Jimmie was sitting beside his mother at a private cemetery at Godric's Hollow. The land behind the old house where it all happened with his da,' grandda', and grandmum was given to the St Cyriac's Church, (which was known to wizard kind as St Jerome's), by the MoM to extend the hallowed ground. They built a low-rise stone ramp that connected it to the old cemetery where his grandparents and many other witches and wizards were buried, which led down to this lower ground where they now were. In the center of the cemetery was a black granite statue of a DOCS officer standing at attention, which looked an awful lot like his da'. Poor Alicia would be the first to be buried here, though his parents already had a tomb just like it at the foot of the statue.
There was a tomb of black granite sitting before them with the Peverell family crest on it, which had Alicia and Lee's names on it just above that, and her side showed her birth date and day of death. Carved into the granite on her side, and along the length, was a knight lying down, which was holding a sword with the pommel at their chest, and with blade's tip toward the knight's feet.
His mum was sitting to his left, and his sister to his right. He had his arms around both while trying to comfort them, as both were crying, but trying to hold it in. Just in front of them, and in the front row of chairs, were Lee and their two young daughters that were not even Hogwarts age yet, as well as he and Alicia's family. It was a sorrowful sight to behold, and on such a very dreary day as today with grey clouds hanging overhead. It had been raining on and off all day.
Finally, they heard the bagpipes start to play, and Jimmie looked back over his left shoulder. Here marched his father in full dress, and in a slow step while he played a lonesome rendition of Going Home on the pipes. Behind him were eight DOCS officers in uniform today, but they were not wearing their balaclavas. They had their arms interlaced, and their hands were holding onto the officer's shoulder across from them, with her coffin sitting atop their arms and shoulders. Everyone attending knew everyone else, and the rest of the public was kept away. They even had security all over the village making sure that no one from the Prophet arrived on the scene.
They slowly marched their way down the aisle between the chairs, and placed her flag draped coffin upon her side of the tomb. First, the parochial vicar named Reverend Swain gave the eulogy, and then Minister Shacklebolt and his da' said their words. His da' promised to bring everyone involved in this criminal act to justice at the end of his speech. Next, the Union Jack, the ministry's flag, and the MDOCS black flag were removed, and folded into a neat triangle. These were given to his da', who then solemnly presented them to Lee, who sadly broke down. Jimmie saw his da' place his hand on Lee's shoulder, and whisper a promise into his ear, before he stood ramrod straight, and marched back to the tomb.
The DOCS operatives lined up in formation behind the tomb, and Harry drew the Elder Wand, where he muttered an incantation that caused a huge fire to erupt over the granite tomb's top. It quickly disappeared, and the coffin was now transferred inside the tomb. Fawkes was flying overhead during this, and singing a mournful song.
Finally, the DOCS operatives summoned their staffs at his father's command, which had been laying behind the tomb, and they held them into the air just as Fawkes had landed on Jimmie's shoulder. Each let off a synchronized explosive spell like a cannon's retort high into the air on his father's command, which rang out loudly seven times.
Last, the vicar called the service to a close, and everyone made their way up to give Lee and Alicia's family their condolences. Their family stayed with Lee and Alicia's families until they were safely on their way home.
Jimmie quickly visited his grandparents graves after that, and then made his way back to his family.
Present time.
Jimmie shook his head, and made his way into his en suite where he took a shower. While the hot water was pouring over him, he remembered boarding the Hogwarts Cannonball for the first time.
Thursday, September 1st, 2011.
It was 10:30 AM, and Jimmie's da' had just loaded he and Teddy's luggage onto the train. They were standing outside on Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, where all his brothers, including Scorp and Teddy, had put him into a headlock, and mussed his hair with a laugh. Finally, he looked up at his father, and smirked.
"What if I'm placed in Slytherin?"
"Then Slytherin will have gained a fine wizard, wouldn't it," Harry replied, and then gave his eldest son a hug, which embarrassed the young Potter.
"Yea," Jimmie replied, "I figure it would, and Da', Mum, thanks, you know, for everything."
Daphne wiped her eyes, and drew Jimmie into a long hug before she released him. Next, his sister and his aunt Astoria did the same, and his uncle Draco shook his hand. With one last look, and a huge and toothy grin, he hopped on board with Teddy, and they found a compartment where Jimmie would wait for Goodnight to join them.
As the train pulled out at eleven o'clock sharp, Jimmie hit play on a highly enchanted Walkman, which filled the entire platform with sound. It was the original Miami Vice theme extended version. Here, he, Teddy, and Goodnight stuck their heads out of the window of their carriage, and all three were wearing belled top hats, which they took off and waved at their families and the crowd with huge cheesy grins until the train left the station.
What Jimmie didn't see, was when his mother put her hand to her mouth, and then looked over at his da', where she stated, "Minerva will kill us all in our sleep."
Harry snorted, shook his head with a grin, put his arm around Daphne's waist, and led everyone out of the station.
Present time.
Jimmie was sniggering about that fond memory as he was drying off. He wrapped his towel around his waist, shaved, and did his best to tame his hair. He used a small amount of his grandfather's hair potion, and then combed it down the middle like he usually wore it. He wanted to look his best for Goodnight today, after all.
The headmistress had allowed he and Goodnight, who were this year's head boy and girl, to come home yesterday afternoon for the weekend, though that came with his sister, the twins, and Scorp's protests for not being able to come as well. They were to pick up a set of new dress robes at Diagon Alley at 12:00 today for their graduation speeches, but during that afternoon, they were to floo back to Hogwarts, and head back to their common room in the dungeon. Thank God, Jimmie thought, that Goodnight was made a Slytherin just like him!
Jimmie looked over at the digital clock on his bedside table while he was putting on his jeans, and saw that it was only 6:00. "Geez, it's early," Jimmie muttered, as he finished dressing.
Jimmie knew that his parents were still asleep, and wouldn't wake until eight or so on a weekend, so he was on his own. He looked around his room one final time before he sat on the edge of his bed, where he pulled on a pair of black leather biker's boots. Finally, he stood, run his fingers through his hair, and left his room.
Jimmie went down the back stairs by the kitchen so as not to wake his parents. Here, he quickly walked across the hall, grabbed his jacket from the hook by the side patio's door, and pushed the kitchen door open, where he found Winky putting some scones into the oven.
"Hello, my dear and darling Winky," Jimmie flattered, as he made his way over to put on a pot of coffee. "Fine day, today, isn't it?"
Winky studied Jimmie for a moment, and narrowed her eyes at him. "Yous being up to something young master James. Winky can tells!"
"Shhhh!" Jimmie looked at the other door to the kitchen. "Don't get Kreacher's attention. You know that he needs his rest these days."
Winky started to scold Jimmie, but thought better of it. "Whats yous being thinking this morning, hmmm?"
"Oh," Jimmie smirked, "I'm going to drink a cuppa, and then at about sevenish, I'm gonna take the bike, and drive into town. I'll bring everyone a lunch when I return.
"By the way, do you need anything from the store Winky?" This change of subject would take Winky's mind off why he was going.
Winky thought hard for a moment, and then retrieved a notepad and pencil from a lower drawer under the kitchen's island, where she wrote out a small list. Just as Jimmie poured his coffee, Winky handed it to him.
"I'll get this filled while I'm out, and have it back by noon," Jimmie remarked, as he walked over to the breakfast table and sat down. Here, he put the list in his shirt pocket, and took a sip of his coffee.
"Don't ever allow anyone to tell you that you're not a good elf, Winky. You're one of the best!" Winky blushed, and went back to her morning duties while still keeping an eagle eye on the young master.
Jimmie quietly sipped his coffee, as he gazed outside while watching it become brighter, but he also impatiently watched the clock on the wall. Just as it turned 7:00, he quickly stood, and made his way to the door. "Tell Mum and Da' that I'll be back by noon!"
After Jimmie left through the side patio door in the hall, Winky watched Jimmie walk by the kitchen window beside the table, while heading toward the gate in the patio's stone wall that opened at the front of the manor, and it just hit the small elf that he hadn't eaten any breakfast. "Young master James!"
Jimmie unlocked the door to the garage, which was across the drive from the roundabout, and went inside. He passed by his motorcycle, and headed for his da's, as he had poached the keys on the way out. It was Sirius' old sky blue Royal Enfield with the sidecar. His father had it professionally restored some years ago, and had to have a new sidecar built for it, which was much better than the old one. This sidecar had a higher wind screen, and a small boot in the back. It was wonderful for running errands.
He was also wearing Sirius' old leather bomber jacket that his da' had given him when he turned sixteen, and it was now covered in patches from their DOCS unit. Nobody knew what they meant but a select few, and his favorite was their special ops patch on his right shoulder, which showed the grim reaper, with green eyes, upon a dark grey background, and under that, on the patches bottom tag, it said: "NOYFB!"
Finally, Jimmie straddled the bike, and turned the key. Next, it took him two kicks, but the twin cylinders roared to life, as he took the garage's remote from his jacket pocket, and opened the overhead door. Before he pulled out, he reached over to the side car, which had a stereo installed inside. He turned it on, and hit play, where 'Bad Moon Rising' started to play, as he eased out on the clutch, and pulled the bike out of the garage. As he opened the throttle, he aimed the garage door's remote over his shoulder with his left hand, and closed it, while barreling down the drive.
Jimmie roared by his aunt Petunia's place, which was the garden house where Ron and Hermione used to live. They had moved out a few years back to be closer to Ron's parents, and bought the Diggory's old place.
When Jimmie made it to the gate, he merely waved his hand and it opened. Next, he pulled out to the edge of Medland Lane, and switched the song to another that he enjoyed, which was 'Green River." Here, he turned right onto the lane, and opened up the throttle, where the old bike roared to life, and shot off like a bullet on the tarmac. It would be a quick ride through the rolling country, as it was only about three and a half miles to Tedburn St Mary, and he looked forward to seeing Goodnight.
AN: If you haven't read Intrigue, you should do this beforehand, so that you can understand the story. It can be found under my stories.
Also, Intrigue went through two different betas, and several Easter eggs were left in addition for those who might want to go back and reread it. The story was not changed, but a few minor tidbits of info were added, especially about the Notts.
