Oops, I Did It Again – Chapter 2

While Jane was suspended Frost had called her each day and went over early on Saturday afternoon to shoot the shit with her and watch some television with her. He had a date so he couldn't spend all day with her. By the time Frost had arrived around noon, she had already had several beers. They spent the next four hours talking about anything and everything except for Detective Darren Crowe. The whole situation with Crowe still pissed Jane off.

Sunday afternoon she went to her parents' house for their weekly family dinner. She hadn't told her parents about being suspended. Her younger brother, Frankie knew as he was a beat cop but she swore him to secrecy. She didn't need any lectures from her mother about her anger issues. Frankie promised he wouldn't say a word about it. They had a nice dinner and she was able to watch some sports with her father and brother on the television before she went home.

When Jane's alarm went off Monday morning, she was so happy. Normally she slammed her fist down on the snooze button and cussed at her alarm clock but today she simply pressed the snooze button and rolled back over for an extra five minutes of rest. The last five days had been miserable for her. Today she was returning to work and she would get her badge and gun back.

When the alarm sounded again, she turned it off and got up and fixed herself a cup of coffee. Once she had some coffee in her she took a shower and got ready for work. At exactly 8 AM she knocked on Lt. Cavanaugh's door.

Hearing the knock, he looked up and said, "Oh hey Rizzoli, come on in." She walked in and he motioned for her to have a seat. She sat down as he walked over and closed the door. "Before I give your badge and gun back, I want to explain that this afternoon at 3 PM you will report for your first mandatory anger management session. They know that this is required for you and will sign your paperwork after each session. Please don't make me regret giving you back your badge and gun."

"I won't sir. I will attend the anger management sessions." Jane promised her LT even though she thought it was bullshit that she had to the classes. She loved her job though and if this is what she had to do to keep her job then she would do it.

"Okay, now please get to work." Lt. Cavanaugh rose and handed her her badge and gun. She immediately affixed them to her belt and on his hand motioning for her to exit his office she rose and went out to her desk.

There was a fresh coffee and pastry on her desk with a note from Korsak and Frost that said, 'Welcome back.' She smiled at them both and said, "What's the latest on anything? Do we have a case?"

Korsak replied, "No new case, we have been working on a cold case and just wrapped it up on Friday. We were going to start the next cold case. With the changes in technology, we were able to rerun some of the DNA evidence and find new leads. What's the top case on your cold case list?"

Jane pulled out the file and replied, "Owens, Jennifer, murder, Thanksgiving 2000, Case Number 00-115, unsolved." They moved over to the white board so they could review the case and lay out a timeline. Jane liked when they worked the cold cases together. It allowed them to bounce ideas off of each other.

Jane had the marker and was writing all the demographic information on the board when Korsak asked her, "So, what time do you need to leave out of here this afternoon?'

"What for?" She asked him as she put the marker down and stepped back over to her desk.

"For your class?" He continued.

"Oh that, between 2 and 2:30. I have a good idea of where the place is but I don't want to be late."

"Okay, how about we do lunch at 11 or 11:30 today and then work on the case some more before you have to go?"

"Sounds like a plan, stan. Let me gather up a few more facts for our board. Do you want me to make copies of anything for you guys to review, or just give you certain parts of the file?"

"No, I think we both have some work to keep us busy for a short time while you review the case." Korsak replied.

Jane informed Korsak, "Okay, that's good, it will take me about half an hour to review all my notes and see where we stood the last time I reviewed this file."

Half an hour later the three of them were looking over Jane's notes and updating the murder board. They took the cold cases just as serious as the current cases they worked. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes on a case revealed additional information. Not saying that the previous detectives did a bad job or anything just that some people see things differently. Jane was very good at her job and she managed to see things that others had missed.

They worked on the case until it was lunch time. After a quick lunch they resumed working the case until it was time for Jane to leave for her class.

Jane arrived at her class ten minutes early. She sat in her car for five minutes before entering the building. She signed in at the front desk and they gave her a name tag. She placed it on the bottom of her jacket. She didn't want people to see her name tag.

She sat in the back of the class, she didn't want to be noticed or called on if this class turned into a class participation type of class. She was in luck as this was an information class. The class leader reviewed the course and expectations. He then called people up one by one and handed them their therapist assignment.

Jane's note didn't have a name for her therapist, just a day and time to meet. She logged the day and time into her calendar and went to the sign in table to have her attendance sheet signed off. She was happy this first meeting was over. It was only 3:30 so she went back to work.

"So how was class?" Korsak asked when he saw Jane come into the bullpen. Jane looked around the bullpen before responding. She wanted to make sure that Crowe wasn't anywhere around.

"It was okay, pretty much just an overview. They gave me a day and time to meet with my therapist, Wednesdays at 3:30 is my time starting this week." Jane didn't want to talk about it but Korsak was her supervisor and she needed to keep him informed.

Frost asked, "Do you know anything about your therapist?"

"Not a thing, not even a name. Other people got names but not me, just a day and time."

Frost continued, "Well at least you have that and can get this program started so it will be over soon."

Jane replied, "Ya, that is a good thing."

"Man, you broke Crowe's nose so good, he had to take a few days off of work." Frost informed Jane.

Jane smirked, she couldn't help herself and they she said, "Great, but I really don't want to talk about that asshole. He better not ever say anything like that to me again. Kinda makes for a hostile work environment. I hope he gets some kinda punishment as well."

Frost stated, "Well, we all had to go talk to HR while you were out, so maybe something is happening. You know they can't say anything, even if they wanted to."

Jane replied, "Ya, I had to talk to them as well. I hope something happens to him. It wouldn't be fair if I got suspended for three days and nothing happened to him."

"I totally agree with you." Frost said as Jane sat back down at her desk so they could go back to work on their cold case.

After a few minutes of watching a video on her computer, Jane said, "So, I was looking over the interview with the primary suspect and it looks as if his facial expressions are saying something different than the words that are coming out of his mouth."

"Man, you are pretty good with that facial expression stuff."

"What can I say, I can read people."

Frost and Jane watched the video together and then carefully read the transcript of the interview. They keyed in on one aspect of the interview where the suspect messed up. Jane looked up the current whereabouts of the suspect and Korsak gave them permission to round him up. They stayed late and interviewed the suspect again. Jane loved closing up cold cases and after keeping the suspect overnight while they waited for search warrants, they were able to arrest the primary suspect and by Wednesday afternoon they had closed the case, just in time for her to go see her anger management therapist. Jane thought it was sad that the father had killed his daughter, well his step-daughter because his wife was paying too much attention to her and ignoring him.

At 3:25 PM on Wednesday Jane walked into her anger management therapist's office and introduced herself to the receptionist. At 3:30 the therapist's office door opened and …
