Oops, I Did It Again – Chapter 8

The week flew by and it was time for Jane's next therapy session, the one that Korsak and Frost would be attending. Jane didn't mind Korsak and Frost coming, but she was a little nervous because she was forming a friendship with Maura and to date, she didn't have to share her except with Jo Friday.

Frost really loved women and she knew she wouldn't feel comfortable if Frost was openly ogling Maura in front of her. She didn't mind it when they went out but this was Maura she was talking about, she deserved better.

Jane, Korsak and Frost arrived together. Jane almost went to the coffee shop but she remembered they were meeting in her office. She checked in with the receptionist and they had a seat while they waited for the doctor. Once the receptionist notified Maura that Jane and her coworkers had arrived, she immediately got up so she could greet them. She knew they were busy and that they were taking time away from their current case to meet with her. But Jane needed the support so this was important to Jane's overall wellbeing.

The door opened and all three of them looked at the door. Frost's mouth dropped a little when he saw how beautiful Maura was. Jane said she was beautiful, but she far exceeded what Frost was expecting. They all rose as Maura stepped into the waiting room to introduce herself. She greeted Jane and then extended her hand out and said, "You must be Sergeant Korsak?"

"Yes, please call me Vince." Korsak said as he shook Maura's hand.

"Okay Vince. I am Dr. Maura Isles, please call me Maura. It's nice to meet you." She turned to Frost and said, "Hello, Detective Frost, it is so nice to meet you."

Frost shook the offered hand with both of his and didn't say anything, he was too taken away by the doctor's beauty. He brought her hand up to his mouth and kissed the back of Maura's hand. Jane had to nudge him, "Oh, hey doc. It's nice to meet you. Jane speaks very highly of you. Please call me Barry." Frost finally said as he released Maura's hand. He didn't take his eyes off of her.

"Well, she has said great things about the two of you and that is why I wanted to meet you and have you help me help her. Let's go in my office so we can sit down and talk." Maura extended her hand pointing towards the open door. "Please come in."

Jane walked in first. She wanted to make sure she got one of the comfy seats and not the couch. Korsak and Frost both sat on the couch and Maura, after closing the door, sat in one of the comfy chairs near Jane. She smiled at Jane as she sat. Jane was happy that Maura came in last so that Frost wouldn't be checking out her backside as she walked in.

"Gentlemen, I picked up coffee for you. Jane told me you love coffee almost as much as she does." Maura said as she brought the coffee cups out from the table behind her desk.

"Oh God yes, thanks doc." Korsak stated as she handed him his cup of coffee. She then passed Frost his cup and Jane hers.

"Thank you, Dr. Isles." Frost said. Maura smiled and nodded at him as she pulled her cup of tea in front of her.

"Thank you, Maura for getting coffees for my team." Jane expressed as she took a sip of her nice and hot coffee.

"Now that we all have our drinks, let me start. The reason I asked for you to accompany Jane today is so I can explain how you can help me help her. Jane has learned techniques to stop her anger or at least keep it in check and she might require your assistance at times, so she doesn't end up punching someone again."

Korsak and Frost both laughed and Korsak said, "Ya, we don't need that happening again, although Crowe did deserve it."

Maura frowned, "Well, he may have deserved to be punished but Jane and I have talked and she knows that I feel violence is not the answer. I'm glad that the department is keeping Crowe away from Jane and I hope they will continue to do so."

Jane said, "The lieutenant called me in right before we left to come here and stated that Crowe is being transferred to another location and he will no longer be working in Homicide. He will be working with the Drug Control Unit out of the E-18 office."

"Janie, you didn't share that with us." Korsak commented with a slightly irked expression.

"I know and I don't think he was supposed to tell me, so what is said in here stays in here. I believe he is trying to look out for me and wanted me to have some piece of mind." Jane informed her partners.

"That is great news Jane. I know the lieutenant probably wasn't supposed to tell you as it is an ongoing investigation." Korsak stated.

"Yes, he is looking out for you Jane and probably wasn't supposed to tell you but wanted to let you know that things are happening." Frost said.

"Well, let's get started as we only have an hour. There are two types of timeouts that will assist Jane in controlling her anger: formal and informal. The formal timeout requires a prearranged plan to be in place where a conversation can be stopped and picked back up at an agreed upon time. That is the technique that she might have to use with the two of you or others in the workplace and she might need your help to facilitate that."

Korsak and Frost both nodded their heads in agreement.

Maura then continued, "The informal timeout would be something like Jane being able to walk away from the conversation without any plans for continuing. Maybe she has to go sit in one of the interrogation rooms by herself to calm down."

"So, you want us to help her pause conversations as needed so she doesn't get too angry." Frost asked Maura.

"Yes, you two spend the most time with Jane. You are the individuals that can help me help her the most. She doesn't spend enough time with her family to involve them in this. When Jane and I discussed this, we agreed that because she worked so closely with the two of you and spent the majority of her day with you, it would be wise to include you in her anger control plan."

"That makes sense. I will help however needed." Korsak informed Maura.

"Ya, me too. I don't want Jane to get suspended again or worse, fired." Frost added.

"Thank you!" Jane told both of them.

"Yes, thank you. Normally this is a class that would only involve myself and the individual but in this case Jane and I thought it would be beneficial for the two of you to be involved in case she needed help. Do you two do deep breathing exercises?" Maura asked Korsak and Frost.

They both looked at each other and nodded 'no.' Maura then described in great detail how to do the deep breathing exercises. They spent a few minutes doing them together. Then she explained muscle relaxation and explained how to relax your muscles. They completed a three-minute muscle relaxation exercise. Frost enjoyed that and felt he would be able to use this in the future and he thanked Maura for teaching them that technique. His smile lit up when he was talking to Maura. Jane was happy that he was polite and not hitting on Maura. He was being the professional she knew and loved and she was very appreciative of that.

Jane had agreed to share her Anger Control Plan with Korsak and Frost so Maura had it printed out so they could discuss it in detail. They spent the rest of the hour discussing the plan and the different techniques and how Jane could deal with different situations.

When the hour was up Jane was confident that her partners had learned how they could help her keep her anger under control. They were all laughing and Frost was telling some corny jokes so he could continue to hear Maura laugh and to see Jane smile. The last few months Jane didn't have much to smile about but Frost could see how relaxed Jane was in Maura's presence and he liked seeing his partner that way.

They all rose as the session ended and Maura shook hands with the gentlemen again and told them that she enjoyed meeting them. She smiled at Jane as she left the office. The three detectives went back to the precinct to continue working on their case while Maura sat at her desk to type up her notes about the session. She thought the session went well and she hoped that between the three of them Jane wouldn't have any more workplace anger issues. She would see Jane the next week and they would continue their anger management sessions. She still had a thing or two to teach Jane.

Frost couldn't help but comment on the trip back to the precinct, "Man, that doctor is hot, you said she was beautiful but she is drop-dead gorgeous. I wonder if she is spoken for."

Jane knew it wasn't her place to let Frost know that Maura had been married to a woman and that men might not be her thing. That would be for Maura to let him know if he attempted to seek any sort of relationship with her. Jane hoped that Frost wouldn't attempt anything with Maura. Jane did share that Maura used to be an assistance medical examiner. "Thank you for going with me today. I really appreciate your support. Maura is quite unique. I couldn't believe when she told me she used to be an assistant medical examiner. So, she knew all about homicide detectives and how important our jobs are."

"Wait, she was a medical examiner?" Frost spit out as he was drinking his coffee.

"Yes, I didn't tell you that?" Jane questioned.

"No, you left that detail out. Why is she not a medical examiner now?" Korsak asked.

"They were short staffed so they put her in the ER most of the time. When her spouse was killed, she took some time to think about what she wanted to be doing and decided she would take a break and become a therapist while she sorted out her life. She moved back to Boston as there were too many memories of her spouse in San Francisco. She had always been interested in psychology and had minored in that while continuing her forensics studies." Jane informed them.

"That is quite the varied background. She is a remarkable individual. I wish we had someone smart like her as our medical examiner instead of Pike. He is about as worthless as they come." Frost added.

"Ya, but she is a therapist and a darn good one at that. I'm so happy I got her. I actually look forward to going to therapy. What she is teaching me is working. I can tell already that I am able to keep my anger down and it helps that Crowe isn't around pissing me off." Jane said as Korsak pulled the cruiser into a parking spot in the precinct's garage.

"Well, let's get back to work on this case and maybe we can all be happy when we solve it." Korsak stated as they exited the cruiser and headed for the bullpen. It would be another long night for them.
