Oops, I Did It Again – Chapter 13

Maura had enjoyed her visit to Jane's apartment and sitting and watching the show with her. She then thought of how they should make time to do this every week, maybe have a movie night and have take-out dinner or something. Anything so they could spend time together. Maura hadn't had many friends in her life and felt as though she had missed out. Jane was so nice and she just wanted to get to know her better and hang out like friends do.

Jane was taking the time to explain things to her when she didn't understand what was being said. Jane didn't laugh or make fun of her. Okay maybe she laughed a little, but not at her, just at the situation. She ended up making Maura laugh in the process. Maura didn't grow up the way normal people grew up. She didn't watch cartoons on the TV or watch children's movies. She didn't have birthday parties and family get-togethers on holidays. Jane felt as though Maura missed out on so much and she wanted for her to experience everything she missed out on.

Jane thought it would be fun to share her childhood experiences with Maura and help Maura make some of her own. Jane had been thinking about this ever since Maura left her apartment. Maura did need friends and Jane was going to be that friend for her. She would help her get over her social anxieties. She would share her family and her coworkers. She was sure that Maura would like that. She already knew Korsak and Frankie.

They spoke on the phone and sent text messages to each other. Because of an onslaught of murders, it was over three weeks before they saw each other again. Maura had invited Jane to come to her house for their next Friday night meeting. They had discussed that Friday or even Saturday would be a better time to meet. Maura had the weekends off and from time-to-time Jane did as well. Both of them worked on Thursdays, so meeting on Wednesday nights would limit the time they could spend together as they both had work in the morning.

Maura told Jane, "When you come over to my house, I will cook dinner for you." Jane thought that sounded great. They arranged to meet at 7 PM. Jane had just closed a case earlier in that day and she met Korsak and Frost at 5 PM at the Dirty Robber for a beer to celebrate. She left them at 6 PM so she could get ready to meet Maura. She was a little nervous meeting Maura at her house. She figured they had been friends for months now and Maura had been to her apartment so she shouldn't be nervous about going to Maura's house. Friends go to each other's houses.

When Jane arrived in the neighborhood and looked at the house, she was a little uncomfortable. Maura lived in a nice section of Boston, known as Beacon Hill. Jane thought maybe Maura made a lot of money as a doctor. This was definitely not a section of town that she could afford to live in.

She parked her car and after a moment, she got up the nerve to get out of her car. She walked up to the front door and knocked. Maura answered the door just a few seconds later. Jane was five minutes early. Maura smiled at Jane, she still had her apron on and Jane thought she looked fantastic. She had a nice flower covered sundress on, a relaxed dress compared to the ones Jane had seen her wear at her office and to the coffee shop. Jane admired how Maura looked in her dresses. Maura had class. She was always well dressed and looked as if she could be on the runway at a fashion show.

"I hope you like chicken parmigiana and vegetables." Maura stated as she took her apron off as they approached the kitchen. "Please, have a seat at the island. I just need to pull dinner out of the oven. Would you like to help me bring the dishes to the dining room?" Maura added as she turned the oven off and took out the hot pad holders so she could carry the dishes to the table.

"I love chicken parm, not too much vegetables." Jane said and they both laughed. Maura knew that Jane wasn't a big fan of vegetables, but she picked a vegetable that would go perfectly with the chicken. Jane didn't even know what the vegetable was when she said 'not too much vegetables.' "And yes, I will help you bring the dishes to the dining room?"

"Jane, I really think that you would like this vegetable," suggested Maura. It was covered so Jane couldn't see what it was.

"Really, why do you think that?" Jane questioned.

Maura immediately replied, "Because it is wrapped in bacon, and you said you loved bacon."

"Wrapped in bacon really?" Jane said excitedly, she loved bacon.

"Yes, and if you want the bacon you will have to eat your vegetables." Maura smiled and displayed her dimples. Jane thought Maura looked cute when her dimples were on display.

"Maur, really? You're going to make me eat vegetables." Jane smiled as she asked. She was enjoying her banter with Maura.

"Yes, Jane. You need to eat a well-balanced meal and you told me what you eat when you on steak outs and rushed at work." Jane wondered why this woman was able to get her to admit to things and to get her to do things.

"Okay, I will try it, but no promises. So, what is this mysterious bacon wrapped vegetable?" Jane gave her a wide dimpled smile that reached almost all the way to her eyes.

"Asparagus. We are having chicken parmigiana and bacon wrapped asparagus."

"And beer?" Jane smirked and tilted her head as she asked, really hoping that beer was on the menu.

"Yes, I picked up some of your favorite beer." Maura told Jane.

They sat and talked as they ate their dinner. They both were enjoying the conversation. When dinner was over, they washed and dried the dishes together, then went to the living room to watch more of the series they had started, 'The Lincoln Lawyer.' They watched two episodes and then Jane stood up and said, "I should probably go home now. Thank you for dinner, it was wonderful."

Jane thought to herself, 'I don't want to go but I should.' Maura didn't want her to go either.

"You're welcome, Jane. Maybe we can do this again, I enjoyed cooking for you."

"That sounds great Maur, I would love that. Maybe I can even help you cook our dinner. Just remember I can't promise a timely arrival because of my work schedule. We never know when there will be a murder."

"Yes, murders are quite unpredictable."

They spoke for a few minutes as Maura walked Jane to the door. Maura didn't close the door until she saw Jane drive off. She wondered when she would be able to spend time with Jane again. She liked talking to her in person rather than on the phone but if she couldn't see her at least she could facetime with her.
