Oops, I Did It Again – Chapter 16

It was well after midnight when Jane finished working on the case and the lieutenant told the team to go home and get some sleep and he wanted them back at work at 8 AM fresh and ready to work.

Jane sent a text to Maura. 'Maur, just wrapped for the evening have to be back at 8 AM.'

Maura read the text as she laid in bed. She immediately sent a text back. 'Are you coming over?'

Jane read the text and sent her reply, 'I can if you want me to, it would be like 20 minutes.'

Maura replied, 'That's fine. I would feel more comfortable with you here with me.'

'On my way.' Jane sent the text and was out the door. Seventeen minutes later she knocked on Maura's door. Maura answered in a robe, slippers and a huge smile. She was very happy to see Jane. Jane leaned in and gave Maura a quick kiss as she walked in the house. Maura shut and locked the door after Jane passed her.

"Did you have dinner?" Maura had some food warming in the oven knowing that Jane probably didn't have a chance to eat.

"No, not at all. I did manage to get a cup of coffee, and well a donut but I don't consider that eating. That was merely a snack." Jane said as she wrapped Maura up in a hug. Maura immediately wrapped her arms around Jane. She enjoyed being held by Jane.

"I have dinner warming up in the oven if you would like to eat."

"Oh my God, that would be great. I'm hungry." Jane expressed with a huge smile.

They separated and stepped in the kitchen. Jane noticed that a place setting was already prepared so she sat down as Maura pulled the plate of food out of the oven. "Wow, that looks amazing. You cook Italian?" Jane asked curiously.

"Yes, I love Italian." Maura replied knowing that food was a way into Jane's heart. She knew Jane had a huge appetite. Jane had told her how physically demanding her job was at times.

"Me too." They both laughed. Maura knew Jane liked Italian food, that is why she cooked it.

They cleaned up the dishes together and then went up to Maura's room. Maura asked if Jane could just hold her like they did before. Jane set her alarm for 7 AM. She wanted to make sure she was at work on time. When the alarm went off, she untangled herself from a snoozing Maura and went to the bathroom to take a shower and get ready for work.

She was surprised that Maura was awake and dressed when she finished. Maura already had gone down stairs and made the coffee and a light breakfast for Jane. Reminding Jane that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. She kissed Jane at the front door as Jane left for work.

At 10 AM Maura's cell rang. It was Lieutenant Cavanaugh from BPD. "Dr. Isles would it be possible for BPD to contract with you for possibly a week to work on a high-profile case? The FBI recommended you for the assignment. Our medical examiner had a family emergency yesterday and with it being the weekend we didn't have a stand-by and to be quite honest from what I have heard about your work I would much rather have you working on this case with my team."

Maura didn't hesitate, "I can be there before 11 AM."

Lt. Cavanaugh replied, "Excellent, I will let the officer at the front entrance know that I am expecting you." The FBI already had several cases that had their medical examiners tied up with so they recommended Maura when Lt. Cavanaugh contacted them. The FBI would be arriving later in the afternoon to work with his team and he needed a medical examiner.

Maura sent a text to Jane. 'I have been called in by Lt. Cavanaugh to work a high-profile case. Is that your case?'

A few minutes later Jane replied, 'Yes Maur, our medical examiner got called away on a family emergency, so it looks like we will be working together. I guess I will see you shortly.'

'Yes, I am leaving the house now.' Maura texted back as she walked out the door.

Jane was excited. She knew Maura was a great medical examiner and that she would be a great addition to the team. Dr. Pike was an asshole and Jane hoped that he wouldn't return from his emergency so that they could possibly keep Maura.

Maura met with Lt. Cavanaugh shortly before 11 AM and he showed her around and introduced her to the team. He showed her the morgue and introduced her to the staff. "Dr. Isles, this is Senior Criminologist Susie Chang, she can help you get acquainted with the morgue and the crime lab. I will leave you in her care. She can explain how things work down here as I have no idea. If you need anything please let me know and I will do my best to see to it."

"Thank you, lieutenant." Maura politely replied.

He left her with Senior Criminologist Susie Chang, and he went back to work. Susie showed Maura the body and where all the items were located. She showed Maura the office and the private bathroom. Maura changed into her black scrubs and then met Susie in the autopsy room. Within then minutes they began work on the autopsy.

In the absence of a medical examiner Susie had already done all of the routine preliminary work and had the lab working on the scrapings from under the fingernails. She had the system working on verifing the identity of the victim through the finger prints. Although they already knew the identity of the victim, they still had to follow protocol and identify the victim through the finger prints and if needed dental records. Everything they did needed to stand up in a court of law and then never deviated from protocol. If this case had to go to court for some reason the finger print identification would be used.

Maura changed a few things around to fit her needs and a little over two hours later the autopsy was completed and she was in the office writing up the report. Not knowing who to send the report to, she printed a copy and asked Susie if she could take her to the homicide bullpen. Susie informed her that Detective Rizzoli was the lead detective on the case and they went to the third floor to meet with Detective Rizzoli. Jane wasn't at her desk when they arrived.

Korsak greeted Maura, "Hello again Dr. Isles. Is that the autopsy report?"

"Hello Vince, yes." Maura stated as Jane and Frost walked in. Jane wasn't thinking and walked over and she gave Maura a quick kiss on the cheek and said, "Hi Maur" as she went to put things down on her desk.

Everybody was a little surprised by her actions and they were just standing there when Jane walked back over. "So, what do you have for us?" Jane asked as she smiled at Maura.

Maura smiled back at her and said, "I conducted the autopsy and there are a few inconsistencies. We are running further lab tests to confirm that the victim had been poisoned. We should have those results back within a few hours."

Susie was still standing there in shock. She had no idea that Jane knew Maura. She had never seen Jane kiss someone in greeting like she just did. She hadn't spent that much time with the detective but she knew that she had the reputation of being cold and very work oriented, so to see this tender action from her to a new person was surprising.

"Thanks, Maur. I appreciate you letting us know. Please let me know when the test results come back."

"I will detective. Vince and Barry, it was very nice seeing you again. I will let you get back to work." Maura smiled and handed Jane the initial autopsy report. With that said Maura and Susie left to go back down to the morgue.

"Wow, it is great to get to work with Maura. Why isn't she working as a medical examiner full-time Jane?" Frost asked.

"She is trying to find a position meanwhile she is a contract medical examiner working whenever she can, mostly for the FBI. They have called on her to work a few out-of-town cases as well. I don't like when they do that because then she isn't here with me."

"I wouldn't like if my girl was out of town either." Frost added.

"Well, this case isn't going to solve itself, let's get back to work partner." Jane said as she sat down to read over the autopsy report with a huge smile on her face. This was the first case she was getting to work with her girlfriend.

While they were waiting for the test results to come in several bodies arrived that needed to be autopsied. Maura set off to get the autopsies finished and the reports written. They were routine autopsies, an elderly man who passed away at a retirement home and a victim of a car crash. She was asked to perform the autopsies to confirm that they were routine deaths.

Before she knew it, it was after 8 PM. It was time to go home and eat dinner. She made her way upstairs to see if a certain detective was still present and if she would like to go home with her. Maura smiled at the thought. She liked working here with Jane and for the time being this would be her daily routine.

Maura arrived on the third floor just as Korsak commented, "Hey, let's call it a night and start fresh in the morning. Get your stuff and go home." Jane and Frost both rose as Maura fully entered the room.

"Just in time Maur, ready to go?"

"Yes, detective, I think it is time to get some dinner. How about Chinese?"

"Sounds great Maur, lead the way." As they waited at the elevator Jane leaned over and asked, "Hey, since you are coming back tomorrow shall we take one car home?"

"Sounds like a plan detective." They smiled at each other and entered the elevator. As the doors closed Maura stood on her tippy toes and gave Jane a kiss on the lips. They kissed until they reached the parking level and then walked out of the elevator hand-n-hand. Both thinking they would enjoy working together every day.
