Oops, I Did It Again – Chapter 18

A few weeks had passed and Jane and Maura spent all of their free time together. They enjoyed doing things together. They hoped that the feeling would never change. They realized they would have to spend some time apart but given a choice, their choice was to spend their time together.

Every so often they spent the night at Jane's apartment. On one such occasion they had spent the night at Jane's apartment. Jane had gotten up and taken Jo out for a walk and Maura decided she would cook breakfast for them. She got out of bed and through on one of Jane's Boston Red Sox shirts and her panties. She didn't bother to finish getting dressed or to put on makeup, she just wanted to get breakfast going. She pulled her hair back in a sloppy ponytail and set out to see what items she had to work with for breakfast.

She was pleasantly surprised to see bacon and eggs as well as orange juice in the fridge. She knew this was the type of breakfast that Jane liked so she decided she would cook that for Jane. Before she started, she freshen Jo's food and water bowls, knowing that Jo would probably go right for her water bowl when she came in from her walk with Jane. She then set the table and then pulled out the pans she would need to cook breakfast.

She was standing with the refrigerator door open so she could get the eggs out when she heard the door open. Without looking she said, "Love, how do you want your eggs?" When there was no answer, she turned around and saw an older brown-haired lady standing in shock at the scene in front of her.

The lady asked, "Who are you and what are you doing in my daughter's apartment?"

"I am Maura." She paused and then added, "Jane's friend. I am making breakfast. Are you Jane's mother?"

"Yes, I am Angela Rizzoli, Jane's mother. Where is my daughter?" Angela asked still wondering why this half naked lady is standing in Jane's kitchen.

Jane walked in right then and said, "Babe, I forgot to tell you …" Jane stopped talking as she was shocked to see her mother standing there with a surprised look on her face. Jo ran over to Angela and wanted her to pet her. Angela just ignored Jo as she had a mystery to figure out.

"What is going on here?" Angela asked her daughter.

"Ma, why are you here so early? You never come over this early in the morning." Jane deflected by asking her Ma a question as she leaned in to give her Ma a kiss on the cheek.

"I was going to stock your refrigerator for you but I can see that someone has taken care of that already." Maura still had the refrigerator door open as she froze and didn't know what to do.

Jane walked over and closed the refrigerator door and kissed Maura on the cheek and turned them around to face her mother. Jane was holding Maura's hand as she said, "Ma, this is my girlfriend, Dr. Maura Isles. Maura this is my mother, Angela Rizzoli."

Both women just looked at each other. Jane squeezed Maura's hand to let her know everything was okay. Neither woman said anything. Angela because she was surprised to find out that her daughter was dating a woman and Maura because she just didn't know what to say and she was slightly embarrassed to be meeting Jane's mother for the first time while she was half dressed. Angela finally said, "Jane, did you say girlfriend?"

"Yes, Ma I did. Maura is my girlfriend." Jane looked at her mother than at Maura. She whispered to Maura, "Maur, why don't you go in the bedroom and get dressed."

Maura smiled at Jane and whispered, "Yes, that is a great idea, I think I will do just that." After Jane gave Maura a quick kiss on the lips Maura walked into the bedroom to get dressed. About five minutes later she came out to see Jane and her mother having a conversation on the sofa.

Jane motioned for Maura to come sit by her. "Ma, I have known Maura for over seven months now and we started dating over a month ago." Jane immediately grabbed Maura's hand. She wanted to make sure that Maura was comfortable.

"How come I am just finding out about this new relationship and the fact that you are dating women now. Are you a lesbian now?" Angela replied still a little shocked.

"I am not dating women Ma, just Maura. I never thought about dating a woman before I met her." Jane squeezed Maura's hand and she squeezed back. This was their way of letting each other know that they were okay. "Ma, have you ever thought about falling in love with the person and not the gender of the person? That is what happened with us. The more time I spent with Maura the more time I wanted to be with her. I guess you can think of it like a drug, or an addiction."

"No, I was raised in the Catholic Church and you know how they feel about same sex relationships. I don't think you should describe your relationship as an addiction, Jane."

"Well, that is what it feels like. Our relationship feels like an addiction to me as I can't spend enough time with her. I want to be with her all the time. When you get to know Maura, you will discover what a wonderful person she is and then you will be happy that we found each other and that we are happy with each other."

"But what about the Church?" Angela had spent so many years in the Church that she believed that Jane might go to Hell if she stayed in such a relationship.

"Ma, I really don't care what anybody or any entity says. Love is love and it shouldn't matter if you are attracted to a man or a woman. I'm going to continue to date Maura and if you aren't comfortable with that than I guess I will not be spending that much time with you."

"Janie, that is not fair, give me time to adjust to this new facet of your life. Give me time to get to know Maura and see for myself." Angela pleaded with her daughter. She felt as though Jane was getting ready to toss her out of her apartment.

"You can start by joining us for breakfast. What do you say Ma?" Maura squeezed Jane's hand letting her know that she is okay with this and she will support Jane in this.

"Okay, I will stay and have breakfast with the two of you." Angela gave in, she would give this a try and see how she felt about her daughter's choice of a partner after she had spent some time with them and saw for herself what the appeal is to this woman.

"Great, let me go freshen up. To answer your question Maur, scrambled is fine with me and my Ma will have scrambled also." Angela just looked at Jane and Jane just gave her a look like 'don't say anything Ma' and Angela didn't press the issue. She would have rather had her eggs over easy so she could dip her bacon in the yolk.

As Jane passed by Maura, she gave her a chaste kiss and with a huge smile Jane proceeded into the bedroom to freshen up. Angela began petting Jo Friday and Maura returned to the kitchen to continue fixing breakfast.

Angela and Maura didn't talk until Jane returned by that time Maura had finished preparing breakfast and the three of them sat down and engaged in a light conversation as they ate. Angela asked Maura the standard questions: where were you born, what type of doctor are you, have you dated women before my Janie. Okay maybe not standard questions but questions that Maura felt comfortable answering.

Breakfast seemed to drag out as Angela felt once it was over, she would be asked to leave, so she continued to ask questions of both Jane and Maura. By the time breakfast was finished, Angela felt very comfortable with Maura. She liked her and could see why her Janie was drawn to her. She explained to Maura about Sunday Rizzoli family dinner and asked if Maura would attend with Jane next Sunday. Maura replied, "I would love to Mrs. Rizzoli, thank you."

"Dear, please call me Angela. Mrs. Rizzoli is my late mother-in-law and we have missed Janie at Sunday dinners." Angela glared at Jane to remind her that she was expected to attend unless she was dying or had a note from her supervisor excusing her.

"Ma, you are the only one in the family that knows that we are dating. How will pop and my brothers react?" Jane was curious to see what her mother thought.

"Janie, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Your brothers will just be happy that you are seeing someone and well your pop, I will deal with him. I will explain what you told me and tell him of our breakfast and how wonderful Maura is. I always wanted to have a doctor in the family. Just because you are dating a woman does not relieve you from providing me grandchildren."

"Ma, we just started dating, it is a little early in our relationship to be talking about children." Jane looked at Maura and she smiled at her. Jane wondered does that mean that Maura wants children. They will have to have this conversation when her mother wasn't around. Right now, they had a picnic date to get ready for. Jane just hoped that they didn't get called into work. The lieutenant had given them a day off and they were trying to enjoy the day without any thoughts of work.
