Oops, I Did It Again – Chapter 22
Jane and Maura didn't go to sleep until after 2 AM. They were having fun and enjoying each other's company. They were both tired when the alarm went off in the morning however, they both had huge smiles plastered on their faces.
Maura knew she should have waited until the weekend when they had a day off to wear the negligee but she couldn't resist, she was dying to see Jane's reaction. The negligee was so beautiful and she was hoping to elicit a desire in Jane, and it worked. Jane instantly was turned on and wanted to make love to her, so she wasn't complaining.
"Five more minutes, Maur." Jane said at the sound of the alarm beeping at them so early in the morning. She said that almost every time the alarm sounded. Jane didn't like alarms at all. But she knew they had to get up and go to work. Maura had her lunch with the Governor today and Jane, along with Frost, had some leads to follow up on from yesterday.
Work seemed to never end. People were always getting murdered. She wished the murders would slow down a little so they could solve some cold cases along the way. She knew the murders wouldn't stop, she would be out of a job if they did.
Before they left for work Maura made sure to present Jane with her key to the house. She, of course, had tried to give it to her last night however, Jane was so distracted Maura had simply put the key on the nightstand and forgot about it. She had more important things to take care of. Jane gave her a quick kiss and said, "Oh, you tried to give that to me last night and I was just a little bit distracted by a beautiful vision of my girlfriend in a very revealing negligee." She gave her another quick kiss and off to work they went.
Because of her lunch with the Governor Maura drove herself to work. She loved riding to work with Jane, because it gave them a little extra time to spend together before their work day started. It was the little things in life that gave her such pleasure. Almost every moment with Jane was pleasurable for her. Sure, they had their disagreements at times but they always managed to find a way to compromise that pleased them both.
Tonight, they were going to go to Jane's apartment and start packing up her things. Jane had already had the discussion with Maura and agreed to get rid of some things. Jane had planned on that anyways, but she wanted to let Maura think that she wasn't getting rid of anything. They agreed on three piles: keep, give away and throw away.
Tommy was going to sublet her apartment as he needed a place to live. Jane had already cleared it with her management company, agreeing that she ultimately would be responsible for him. Jane was going to ask Maura if they could move-in together and she thought they might look for a new place. Now, though that thought was out the window. Maura's house was fine with her.
They knew they would have one day off the next weekend, so they planned to rent a moving truck that day and move her boxes and what furniture they would agree on. The bulk of the furniture was staying in the apartment for Tommy. Jane had her favorite chair that she wanted to bring over to the house. Maura had said they would set up a 'man cave' for Jane and she could have anything she wanted in her 'man cave.' Tonight, was merely going through things and grabbing some clothes. The rest could wait for the weekend. She would ask Frost, Frankie and Tommy to help her move the boxes.
Once they arrived at work, Jane went over the new leads with Frost and they left to go track down additional information. Maura made her way down to the morgue to review all of the paperwork on the case to see if she could discover any new facts that might help them solve the case. The lab results hadn't provided a DNA match so they weren't any help.
Maura figured it would take her 20 minutes to get to the restaurant. She needed to leave work between 10:15 and 10:30, as she needed time to park the car and allow for possible traffic. Maura didn't want to be late for this lunch meeting. She was so excited when she went to get dressed in the morning, she couldn't decide what to wear. She asked Jane about at least five different outfits before settling on a nice light green knee length dress with a dark green belt and matching shoes.
Jane loved seeing Maura in green as it brought out the green in her eyes. Jane often said that it looked as if Maura had gold specks in her eyes when the green came out of her hazel eyes. When she wore darker colors, her eyes were more brownish in color. Jane preferred the green with gold specks.
Jane was very pleased with the outfit and was happy that it didn't reveal any cleavage, as she was the only one that could see Maura's cleavage. Jane didn't like to share and Maura smiled every time Jane reminded her when she felt the dress was a little too revealing. Maura just thought Jane was adorable when she made such comments.
Maura left BPD at 10:15. She arrived at the restaurant and was parked by 10:50. She waited five minutes before she entered the restaurant. She touched up her hair and make-up while she waited in the car. She really wished that Jane could have attended the lunch with her. Maura had told her that she would call as soon as she got back to the car after she met with the Governor. She saw the Governor's car out front so she knew he was already in the restaurant. She got a little bit of what Jane would call butterflies in her stomach as she entered the restaurant.
The Governor was alerted to her arrival and promptly met her once she was inside. He escorted her to their table and pull out the chair for her. Once she was seated, the waiter came over immediately to take her drink order and provided her with a menu. She was impressed with the quick service. Not sure how her stomach would react to food, she ordered a chef salad and ice tea for lunch. When they were done with their lunch the Governor presented her with an envelope. He said, "Maura, in this envelope is a job offer. I want you to look it over and think about it before you give me an answer."
Maura was so excited, "Philip, can I please open it now and quickly review it. I had a feeling you might be offering me a job today and I would really like to give you an answer now."
"By all means, look it over after we order our dessert. I can answer any questions you might have while we wait for our dessert to arrive." The Governor told her.
"That sounds great, thank you." The waiter came over and took their dessert order. Maura opened the envelope and smiled as she read the job offer. She looked at the job title and then looked at Philip. "Philip, this says that Chief, Medical Examiner of the State of Massachusetts would be my job title. Is that correct? I thought you would be offering me an Assistant Medical Examiner or Medical Examiner position."
"Yes, Maura, that is the job title. You are qualified for this position. I have permission from my staff as they have been helping me try and find a replacement for Dr. Hatcher since his sudden retirement. You are exactly who we are looking for. I hope the monetary amount is enough for you to consider accepting the position."
"Oh, the salary is plenty. The job duties are extensive but nothing I can't handle. The job is based out of HQ BPD, which is a plus. I would love to accept this position. How soon would you want me to start?"
"How about now?" The Governor said as he smiled at her.
"First, I need to ask you a question." Maura stated.
"Sure, what is your question." He was curious to know what she would ask.
"I am involved in a same-sex relationship with one of the homicide detectives in BPD. Would that be an issue?"
"Well, considering that there is only one female detective in BPD's homicide division. I would take that to mean you are in a relationship with Detective Jane Rizzoli."
"Yes, is that going to be a problem?" Maura asked again.
"No, because you would be working for me and not BPD. So, there is no conflict. Do you think you would be able to keep a professional attitude while at work?"
"Yes, we already do as I have been working with BPD on this high-profile case."
"I see no problem then. So, you are accepting the position?"
"Yes, if I might ask what will happen to Dr. Pike?" Maura was curious, she didn't like Dr. Pike and really didn't care, she just wanted to make sure he would not be at BPD working with her.
"You may ask, and he will be transferred back to the Western Massachusetts office. I need to have him reevaluated and maybe put through your refresher course at BCU that you are teaching. Yes, you will still be able to teach your courses. Let's make your official start date tomorrow so I can go back to my office and have HR draft up all the papers. I will have a staff member come to BPD tomorrow morning and bring all the forms you need to sign and I will have my HR department confer with BPD HR to have your fingerprints and such taken. That is a formality as the FBI has already cleared you. We just have to have all of our paperwork in line with our HR department. I am sure you understand." The Governor told her.
"Yes, thank you!" Maura replied.
The waiter arrived with their dessert and they sat and ate dessert while Maura reviewed and signed some forms to accept the position. The rest of the paperwork would be completed tomorrow as the Governor had already stated.
Maura had a huge smile on her face when she left the restaurant. When she sat in her car, she sent a text to Jane. Letting her know that it was in fact a lunch to offer her a position and for Jane to call her as soon as she could. Jane sent a quick text saying 'okay, conducting an interview, I'll call later.'
It was about an hour later when Jane came down to the morgue to see Maura. Maura showed her the paperwork with the job offer. Jane was excited. "Heck with going through things at my place we need to go out and celebrate."
Maura didn't hesitate in saying, "Jane, how about we celebrate by going through your things and getting your butt moved over to our house. That is what I want as much as this job."
"Really, Maur, you don't want to go out and celebrate?" Jane was surprised.
"Jane, having you move in with me and starting this new job is enough of a celebration for me. Let's celebrate at my one-month anniversary of having the job, how does that sound?"
Jane agreed, "Okay, it can be a one month of us living together and of your new job, combined!"
Maura smiled and said, "That sounds great. I am so looking forward to all of this, but mostly you moving in. What time are you going to be able to get off of work tonight?"
"Korsak said because we have a suspect in custody and the interview went well, we should be able to go home around 6 PM and then be back at 8 AM to continue verifying his story. I will call you when it is time to go." Jane replied.
"Okay." Jane gave her a kiss on the lips and didn't care that the door was wide open. People would have to get use to the fact that they were a couple and that Maura was going to be the new boss of the morgue and crime lab.
Maura worked on paperwork until Jane came down and got her a little after 6 PM. They grabbed take-out on their way to Jane's apartment. After dinner, they set aside some clothes that Jane could take to Maura's tonight and then they began the fun of going through Jane's belongings. By 10 PM they had had enough fun and decide to crash there for the night. Jane ran down to her car to get Maura's overnight bag that she had packed just in case and then ran back upstairs so they could go to bed. A night filled with snuggling with her favorite person sounded like a great way to end the day.
