Oops, I Did It Again – Chapter 39
Jane and Maura woke up in each other's arms and smiled at each other. The alarm was nowhere near going off. Jane started kissing Maura, whispering, "I can't wait for you to become my wife and for us to spend the rest of our lives together."
Maura who was thoroughly enjoying the kisses, replied back, "I can't either Jane. Can we get married today?"
Jane stopped kissing her and asked, "Wait, what? Don't you want a big fancy wedding?"
Maura sat up and looked at Jane, who then also sat up, and Maura told her, "Jane, we could just go to the courthouse and get married and then have a formal wedding at a later date like maybe our first anniversary. No one needs to know, just us and HR."
Jane laughed a little and said, "Oh, and telling HR about our secret wedding, that is so romantic, baby."
Maura reached over and grasped Jane's face and said, "I know love, but if we did elope, we would have to tell HR and my lawyer." Maura released her grasp on Jane's face and moved closer to her.
"Wait, why would we have to tell your lawyer?" Jane questioned.
"Because of my trust funds, if something were to happen to me, I would want you to have everything that is mine. I am sure my parents would also." Maura was now thinking about all of the things that she would need to talk to her lawyer about. It took her hours when she met with the lawyers to have Mel's name removed from all of accounts.
This was a serious matter as Maura was single and didn't have any children or siblings. Her parents were thirty years older than her and everything they had would go into the foundation and other charities if she didn't have an heir.
Maura looked lost in thought as Jane said, "We have quite a few things we need to talk about. How about we get dressed and go have breakfast with your parents and then we can sit down and discuss things in greater detail tonight."
"That sounds great. I am sure my parents are going to ask us when we want to get married. Can we just tell them next year sometime?" Maura asked.
"Yes, that sounds like a great plan. Now, how about we take a shower together being as we have an extra fifteen minutes as our alarm has not gone off yet." Jane offered.
"I like that idea." Maura replied as she got out of bed and headed to the shower with Jane in hot pursuit.
On the way to her parent's house, they started talking about the possible date of their wedding. They just decided to leave it as about a year from now and then went on to discuss the location of their wedding. Did they want to get married in Boston or have a destination wedding?
They both said Sicily at the same time, so their destination seemed to be settled. They had talked about wanting to see Sicily, where Jane's family was from. Maura had never been there and Jane hadn't been since she was little.
They had quite a bit to talk about. They agreed they would talk more after Constance and Arthur went back to Paris. They needed to get used to the fact that they were engaged.
As they pulled onto Constance and Arthur's street Maura said, "Why wait? We could get married now and then have the wedding of our dreams as our first anniversary present to each other. It would give us time to plan and prepare but meanwhile we would be married."
Jane smiled at her and nodded as she pulled the car into the driveway. When she put the car in park, she pulled Maura into a passionate kiss. "Yes, I like that idea. Let's check into that. But I like the secret part about not telling anyone except HR and your lawyer." With that settled they walked hand-in-hand to the front entrance of the house and knocked on the door.
Jane knew that her father wouldn't be walking her down the aisle and she didn't want to wait. When she was a little girl, she dreamed of her wedding and she always knew that her father would walk her down the aisle.
Now, that he didn't agree with the fact that she had fallen in love with a beautiful and intelligent woman who loved her equally, she didn't want to wait. She could forego having her father walk her down the aisle. At this point she didn't even want to walk down the aisle, she just wanted to be the one waiting for Maura to walk down the aisle.
She decided right then that she wouldn't wait for her father to come to his senses about her relationship. She would forged ahead and be happy. Maura was the only person that had ever truly made her happy and she deserved to be happy. Yes, she and Maura would get married in a few days.
Maura knew that some people might think that she was rushing into marrying Jane too soon after her wife had died, but she didn't care. She knew that Jane was her person and she wasn't going to let anybody stop her from marrying Jane.
Friday was the day they decided to go shoot at the gun range. Jane had made Constance, Arthur and Maura promise that they would learn proper gun maintenance first. Thursday afternoon they spent two hours learning about the Glock 22 and how to disassemble and reassemble the handgun.
Constance asked, "Why do police officers use the Glock handgun?"
Jane responded, "The Glock 22 has a large capacity and a light body." She had told them, "Weapon knowledge is key and proper maintenance assists the handgun to fire accurately. We will watch a series of videos and then we will practice disassembling and reassembling the gun."
They all sat and watch the videos. Jane didn't have to stop the video as often as she thought. Constance and Arthur did ask a few questions and she rewound the video to go over the material again. After the last video and all three had successfully disassembled and reassembled the handgun, they were ready for the range.
They went out to dinner and enjoyed their evening together. They agreed to meet at 8 AM for a quick breakfast and then go to the range. Jane wanted to go over a few things before they shot the Glock. She had two handguns so only two people could shoot at a time.
The morning arrived rather quickly. Jane was up before Maura as she had to get her equipment ready. She had borrowed extra ear protection and glasses from the department. BPD's range was closed for maintenance so Alexandra let Jane borrow the equipment and volunteered to help Jane. Jane was grateful and accepted her assistance. Alex asked if she could bring her wife, Julie, as she needed a refresher and needed to shoot a few rounds. Jane agreed and Alex brought her two Glocks with her to the range.
Maura was excited that Alex and Julie were at the range with them. She had met them the first time Jane took her to BPD's range to shoot. Alex of course was a great shooter, almost as good as Jane. Julie had about the same level of skill as Maura, which pleased Maura. She knew this wasn't a competition but she knew it would please Jane if she out shot Julie today.
Jane took the time to explain the proper wear of the safety equipment. She demonstrated where to shoot at on the paper target. Once everyone was ready, Alex and Jane double checked to make sure everyone was in the proper shooting position and then they told them to fire.
Constance laughed after the first shot. On hearing Constance's laughter, Jane stopped the shooting on the range. Constance didn't know what she was expecting, she said, "This is exciting. I love it, can we shoot more?"
"Yes, Constance we are going to shoot a minimum of thirty shots." Jane replied.
"Great, let's get on with it then." Constance stated.
"Yes, ma'am." Jane said as she offered a mock salute. "Normally, we shoot a few shots before we look at the paper target."
"Well, why did we stop after the first shot then?" Constance asked.
"Because I saw your reaction and I wanted to make sure you were okay." Jane answered.
"I am fine, let's continue." Constance stated.
"Okay, everyone prepare to resume firing. On my count, three, two, one, fire." Jane announced.
They fired off their remaining nine shots. Alex brought the targets forward once everyone had secured their guns. They removed their ear protection so that they could hear Jane and Alex. Everyone reviewed their targets and Arthur was thrilled that he hit one in the ten range. Five of his ten shots were in scoring range. The other five shots were in the non-scoring part of the target. Alex showed him how to score his target and he score a 41 out of 100. He was proud of himself. He had never fired a handgun before.
Jane helped Constance score her target. Constance didn't shoot a ten, but she shot two in the nine range, one in the eight and three in the seven range for of total of 47 out of 100. Alex assisted Julie in scoring her target. She scored one in the ten range, two in the nine, four in the eight, three in the seven range for a total of 81. Jane reviewed Maura's target which she had scored herself. Maura shot two in the ten range, three in the nine and eight and two in the seven range for a score of 85 out of a 100.
Arthur asked, "So Jane, who is the better shot between you and Alex?" He was curious. He knew for Alex to be the Instructor she had to be a good shot.
Jane and Alex both looked at each other. Jane knew she had out shot Alex last year for qualifying. Alex just smiled at Arthur and said, "Jane out shot me this year for our qualifying, and the year before, and probably the years before that."
"Is there anything preventing the two of you from shooting today?" Arthur asked.
They both shook their heads from side to side. "Oh, a little side competition. I love it." Constance said. "Can you two please shoot ten rounds for us?"
"I only brought so many rounds with us today. I don't want to take away from your experience." Jane explained.
Maura spoke up and said, "I will give up ten of my rounds."
Julie added, "Me too, I can spare ten rounds. I think I have done well this year."
"Well, I guess we seem to have twenty rounds available, what do you say Jane?" Alex asked. "Are you up for a little competition?"
Jane thought about it for a quick second and smiled and then said, "Sure, why not."
"How about loser buys lunch for everybody?" Alex stated.
"Okay, I can go for that. Shall we?" Jane said as she accepted ten rounds from Maura with a kiss for good luck. Julie gave Alex ten rounds and gave her a quick kiss for good luck. She didn't want to be outdone by Maura.
Jane picked up her gun from Constance who gave her a quick kiss on the cheek for good luck, shocking Jane in the process. "Constance." Jane said as she raised her eyebrows.
"What, I was just following what my daughter did, a kiss for good luck." Constance said as she gave Jane a huge smile.
Alex retrieved her gun from Arthur and he repeated the kiss for good luck. Alex said, "Thank you but you know I am competing against your future daughter in law?"
"Yes, but my statement of good luck still applies." Arthur admitted.
Alex smiled at him and said, "What a charmer you are."
"That my dear is very accurate, he loves to charm the ladies." Constance admitted and everybody laughed. The six were having a fun morning. Jane and Alex shot their ten shots and when they scored their targets they had tied.
"I guess this means we have to split the lunch bill." Alex told Jane.
"I guess so." Jane admitted. "Let's let them finish their rounds and see if Maura and Constance can beat Julie and Arthur. We can let them share in our challenge if you want?"
Alex agreed and they loaded their weapons and shot their next ten rounds. After they scored their shots, Constance and Arthur loaded up a new target and loaded their last ten rounds into the magazine and prepare the gun for firing.
At Jane's command they fired their rounds. When the target was brought forward. Alex helped Arthur count up his score, a 68. Jane helped Constance count up her score, a 69. Alex then added up Julie and Arthur's total score for a total of 343 and Jane added up Maura and Constance's total score for a total of 363. Julie and Arthur had to spring for lunch.
Arthur said, "Well, if I have to pay for lunch then I get to choose where we eat, if it is okay with you Julie?"
Julie said, "That is fine with me, Arthur."
Arthur continued, "Then I would like to go to that Dirty Robber place and have a cheeseburger and beer. Jane took my wife there the other day and I didn't get to go. Constance said their cheeseburgers are good."
Julie just smiled as she also liked the Dirty Robber and hadn't been there for a little while. The six of them ate cheeseburgers and drank beer until almost 3 PM when Alex and Julie had to leave to go pick up their boys from school.
They thanked Jane for inviting them and told Constance and Arthur how nice it was to meet them and they hoped that they would see them again. They said goodbye to Maura. Julie looked at Maura and said, "Next time, Maura, I will beat you." Maura just smiled at her.
Constance and Arthur said their goodbyes to the two ladies. They had a fun morning learning to shoot from Jane. They went back to the house and told the chef that they should postpone dinner until about seven.
On Saturday they took in another baseball game with Frankie and Tommy. Constance didn't fuss this time about wearing her jersey. The game was close but the Red Sox won 3-2. Constance never knew you could have so much fun at a sporting event. Polo wasn't that fun and she vowed not to go to anymore Polo matches. If the Red Sox were playing when she came to Boston, she would go to Red Sox games with Jane and Maura anytime they wanted to take her. Arthur felt the same way.
Sunday, they decided to just hang around the house and play cards and watch a movie. Constance and Arthur still needed to pack for their return trip to Paris so they made it an early evening and had dinner at five and then by seven Jane and Maura were headed home.
They would come back in the morning to take them to the airport. After taking Maura's parents to the airport, Jane and Maura went to the courthouse and applied for their marriage license. They had sixty days to get married.
Later that night they discussed what day for their courthouse wedding. Then they would call and schedule the day, and the two of them would go to the courthouse and get married in a private ceremony. Then they would have plenty of time to plan their destination wedding.
When Jane and Maura went back to the precinct after dropping Maura's parents off and applying for their marriage license, they were so happy. They were officially engaged and were planning their wedding.
Tuesday afternoon they caught a new case. Jane was out looking at wedding rings on her lunch break while Maura was in a zoom meeting with the Governor. Frost had called Jane and gave her the location of the crime scene and Jane drove straight there and would meet up with Frost once he arrived. There was no sense for her to go all the way back to the precinct to pick him up when she was just a few miles from the crime scene.
One of Maura's associates handled the crime scene for her as she couldn't get out of the meeting. Jane made sure that enough pictures were taken for Maura to get a sense of what happened at the scene. She knew how meticulous Maura was about the crime scenes. They wrapped up and everybody was leaving the crime scene.
As Jane was leaving a car ran a red light and hit the driver's side of Jane's car. Her car had spun around and was hit by another car. Frost was right behind her and saw it all happen.
He threw his car into park and ran to Jane's car. He didn't care about the other victims in the other two vehicles. His main concern was his partner. He wanted to make sure that Jane was okay.
Jane was unconscious when Frost got to her but he could feel a pulse so he was happy about that. He immediately radioed it in and requested several ambulances be dispatched to the scene. He then notified dispatch that this is an officer involved accident with an officer unconscious at the scene.
It was common practice not to mention the officer's name over the radio. He asked them to call Sgt. Korsak to the scene.
Frost could tell her left arm was busted and that she had a head injury. He saw the blood on her head and arm. He looked inside and saw a bone sticking out of her right leg. He was wondering how long before the ambulance would arrive.
Soon there were other officers on the scene checking on the other two vehicles and their occupants. A young uniformed officer came over and checked on him. He recognized the car as an unmarked police vehicle. He had already called in additional ambulances as there were three additional victims.
The young patrol officer asked Frost, "Detective Frost is that your partner, Detective Rizzoli?"
"Yes, that is my partner. Where's the damn ambulance?" Frost asked very concerned for his partner's well-being.
"It's three minutes out detective. With another three ambulances five minutes out." The young officer replied.
Frost then asked, "How serious are the other victims?"
The young officer replied that, "the person in the first car, had a head injury but was conscious and the two people in the second car both had broken limbs and were conscious."
"Fine, then Detective Rizzoli is our priority patient when the first ambulance arrives. Please make sure that it is directed over here." Frost instructed the young officer.
"Yes sir, detective." The young officer said as he heard the ambulance approach and went to greet the EMTs and direct them over to Detective Rizzoli.
Jane had regained consciousness briefly and saw Frost, "Frost, what the hell happened?"
Frost was able to tell her she was in a car accident and she asked for Maura, before she lost consciousness again.
'Maura' crap I need to call her. Korsak approached Frost along with the EMTs.
"What is going on Frost. Dispatch instructed me that you asked that I report here and told me it was an officer involved automobile accident." He then looked at the car and said, "Oh my God, is Janie okay? Have you called Maura?"
"I don't know and no I haven't called her. I still can't believe that guy ran the red light. Korsak, I don't know what to do. She has been unconscious almost the entire time. She woke up briefly and asked me what happened and asked for Maura and then she blacked out again. I have been holding her hand and talking to her since then."
"You did good kid. The ambulance is here now and they will take care of her. I will call Maura." Korsak said as he took out his cell phone. He called Frankie who was at the precinct. "Frankie, Jane has been in a car accident. I need you to go downstairs and get Maura and bring her to Mass Gen the ambulance is leaving the scene now. I am going to call Maura right now. How far are you from her office?"
"I'm getting in the elevator right now." Frankie stated.
"Actually, you know what I will stay on the line with you. when you get to her hand her the phone and do not let her out of your sight." Korsak instructed Frankie.
"Okay, Korsak, how is she?" Frankie asked he was concerned about his older sister.
"I don't know she is unconscious I am on my way to the hospital right now with Frost. Get Maura there as soon as you can."
"Okay, I see Maura. She is talking with one of her lab techs. Here she is. Maura, Sgt. Korsak would like to speak to you." Frankie said as he passed the phone to Maura.
"Maura, Jane has been in an automobile accident and is being rushed to Mass Gen as we speak. Frankie is going to bring you to the hospital." Korsak said.
"How is she?" Maura frantically asked.
"I don't know any details except that she was unconscious and appears to have a broken arm and possible concussion. She woke up briefly and asked for you before she lost consciousness again."
"Okay, I am on my way. Please call me with any update, if you find out anything before I get there."
"Will do, have Frankie drive you please." Korsak insisted.
"I will." Maura said as she hung up the call and asked for Susie. "Susie, I need to leave, I am not sure when I will be back. Please close up everything at the end of the day. Thank you." With that said Maura and Frankie left the precinct and headed for Mass Gen.
Frankie used the lights and siren. He was just as worried as Maura was but he was in a little better position to drive. In less than ten minutes time they pulled up to the emergency entrance and ran inside the ER department to find out about Jane.
Jane was in surgery. They had to relieve some of the pressure on her skull. The CT Scan had revealed that she had too much pressure on the brain. They also had to repair the bone that was protruding from her right leg and set her left arm in a cast. They made sure that her three broken ribs were not damaging her lungs. Jane was a mess and until she regained consciousness, they wouldn't know her status. All they could do was monitor her and pray.
When Jane was wheeled into an ICU room the doctor said only two visitors at a time. Angela took Maura in with her. They both took in the sight of all the monitors hooked up to her. Angela started crying immediately. She took Jane's right hand because Maura had immediately gone to Jane's left side and latched onto her hand. She wasn't going to let go of Jane's hand for anything. It was her lifeline to Jane.
The two of them stayed like that for over an hour before Angela said she was going to go and let Frankie come in. Maura nodded she didn't say a word. Maura stayed glued to Jane's side. When everyone else went home, Maura stayed.
She stayed for two days only leaving Jane's side to use the bathroom. The nurses had attempted to bring in meals for her but she didn't want to eat. She just wanted Jane to wake up. She slept with her head leaning on the side of the bed, not wanting to let go of Jane's hand. A nurse had come in during the night and placed a blanket over her as the temperature had dropped a little bit in the room.
On the third day when Angela came, they talked for a little while and then Angela stepped out to get some coffee. Maura had been sitting there thinking for days. Maura couldn't handle the uncertainty of Jane's situation. She slowly took off her engagement ring and placed it on the table in front of Jane. She rose up out of the seat and gave Jane a chaste kiss on the lips and said, "I will always love you, but I can't do this." With that she released Jane's hand and walked out of the hospital room as Angela was walking back in.
Angela wondered what was going on until she spotted the engagement ring on the table in front of Jane. "No" was the only word that Angela spoke out loud.
