Oops, I Did It Again – Chapter 47
Six Weeks After the Accident
Jane had her doctor appointment to get her cast removed from her leg. She was so excited. The doctor removed the cast and then had x-rays taken. After a few minutes the doctor checked the x-rays and Jane was good to go, her bone had healed enough for her to start putting some weight on it.
The nurse escorted Jane to the physical therapy department and introduced her to her physical therapist, Dalton. Jane still used her motorized wheelchair as she didn't have the strength in her leg yet to walk. The doctor gave her crutches so she could ease her way into walking again.
Dalton, was 6' 2" tall and very handsome and muscular. He set up an appointment for Jane to meet with him three days a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They chatted for a few minutes and Jane found out that Dalton was an MP in the Army National Guard. He laid out the plan for her recovery. He knew that she would have to requalify with her handgun and be able to complete the department's obstacle course before she was allowed to be back on the force as an active officer.
She had a few days before she started her physical therapy. Jane just wanted to get back to work and with the casts off, the doctor approved for her to go back to work, but only for desk duty. She knew she would be riding a desk, but at least she could be back at work. She could still work on the cases.
Frost and Korsak were happy to see her at work. They didn't have an active case at that moment and were working on a cold case. Jane jumped right in. She was so happy to be back at work. She had her badge but would not get her gun back until she was signed off by her doctor for active status.
Korsak went out and chased leads with Frost. Frost live streamed a video as they followed up on leads in the field. It wasn't the same but Jane was happy, at least she felt like she was helping. Frost had her on the phone also so she was able to interject questions and interact with the people through Frost.
The suspect was getting a little antsy and punched Frost in the face. As she was seated, Jane threw her arms up to block the punch as it looked like the punch was coming straight at her. It wasn't, because it was aimed at Frost but she reacted just the same. Frost had a nice little shiner when he got back to the office. Korsak had to drive as Frost's eye was swollen. Jane told him to ice it. She was laughing with them when they played the video back.
Maura came by at noon to take Jane to lunch. She looked at Frost's eye and told him to keep icing it as that would help keep the swelling down. She didn't see any further damage. So, she and Jane went to lunch. They were resuming as much of their normal schedule as possible. Jane still had a little residual pain but she was dealing with it without pain meds.
Two days later Maura went with Jane to her first physical therapy appointment. Dalton greeted them when they arrived and he was happy to see that Jane was using one of her crutches and was dressed in shorts and a t-shirt and ready to work out.
He was tough on Jane as he needed to make sure she would be able to handle her therapy. If he was too easy on her she wouldn't get her strength back as fast as she wanted. Many of his patients didn't possess the drive that Jane did. Jane was driven to get back to active status and he knew it.
He went through the entire routine with Jane. She had a little difficulty with a few of the exercises but that was to be expected. She needed time to rebuild the muscles that she hadn't been using for the last six weeks.
When her session was over, he gave her a handout with a list of exercises that she should do at home each night. Jane wasn't happy about that, "Really Dalton, you gotta be kidding me, I have homework."
He laughed at her and said, "Of course Detective. You said you wanted me to be tough and push you, so I am. You said you wanted to get back on active status so I am going to push you so you can achieve that goal."
Maura just smiled, she knew that Dalton was going to do this. He had called her to let her know so she could be prepared. He had heard about the Detective's temper and didn't want to deal with a pissed off Jane Rizzoli.
Her therapy was in the late afternoon so they picked up something for dinner on their way home and Jane asked if she could have a beer to celebrate completing her first physical therapy session. After that beer, Maura took off the 'no beer' restriction which pleased Jane. Jane still restricted herself to only one beer a night.
Jane was getting along pretty well with the crutches. If she was only going a short distance, she would only use one crutch on her right side, but for longer distances she used both crutches. She was careful not to overdo it.
Angela had met with her lawyer again after Frank had agreed that they needed to sell the house. Any profits would be split 50/50 after all of their bills were paid off. Frank's business wasn't doing that great as he had been drinking quite a bit and not answering work calls. He told Tommy he could have the business if he wanted it and Tommy agreed to that. Because it was a family business that Angela helped out with, she did all the accounting for the business, it was part of the divorce proceedings.
Once Frank had made the offer to Tommy, he signed up for classes again to get his plumber's license. He had been taking classes and had always planned to go into the business with his father someday. Jane and Frankie were both proud of their little brother. It was a big commitment for him to make. Rizzoli and Sons Plumbing was well thought of prior to their father's drinking binge that last couple of months.
From time to time as their schedules allowed, Jane and Frankie had helped their father complete some jobs.
Jane and Maura discussed their wedding later that night. "Maur, do you think we can have our wedding her in Boston and then go to Sicily for our honeymoon?"
"I thought you wanted to get married in Sicily?" Maura stated as she wondered why Jane had changed her mind. She knew they were dragging their feet on finding a wedding venue but she just thought it was just the fact that they hadn't found a place that was perfect yet.
She had always thought she wanted a large wedding but now that she and Jane were married, she just wanted a ceremony for their friends and family to witness and celebrate with them. She'd be fine if they had a ceremony in their backyard, as long as Jane was waiting at the other end of the aisle she really didn't care. She was already married to her.
"I did, but the more I think about it. I don't want to have all of our family and friends travel there, when I just want to take you there and see where my ancestors came from. I don't want to share Maur. It truly is that simple. We are already married and the ceremony is just for us to share with them. Let's just have a ceremony here and then go away together, just the two of us."
"If that is truly what you want, then that is what we will do." Maura said as she sat down on the couch with Jane and started kissing her. It didn't take long and they were laying on the couch making out. Maura had just taken Jane's shirt off and was starting to take her undershirt off when the back door suddenly opened and Angela walked in. They quickly rose and sat up. Angela then walked into the living room.
"What are you ladies up to?" Angela asked having no idea that she had just interrupted their make out session.
Maura was quick to say, "I was just getting ready to ask Jane what she wanted for dinner." She wasn't lying as she had gone over to the couch to ask Jane that very question. She just got sidetracked with Jane's question and then one thing led to another and they started making out before she had a chance to ask her about dinner.
"Well, I had made some chicken parmigiana and would be more than happy to share. It just came out of the oven a few minutes ago. I was coming over to ask if you would like some." Angela offered and Jane and Maura looked at each other and agreed.
"That would be great Angela, thank you." Maura said as she rose to start setting the table, "would you like to join us here to eat it?"
Angela smiled and said, "I would love that." Jane just cringed. She knew this would be one of the problems of having her mother living in the guest house. Her mother liked company and being by herself was not a good idea. They would have to lay down some ground rules about when she could come into the main house, and not just barge in through the back door. If Jane had her way, it would be never. Jane just smiled and got up so she could join them at the table for dinner.
Weeks went by and Jane continued making progress with her physical therapy. She really hated Dalton at times but knew he was just doing what she asked him to do, he was pushing her. Dalton had checked with the department to find out exactly what times Jane would have to make to qualify and he worked on those activities with her during therapy.
After each session all Jane wanted to do was go home and soak in her bathtub and let her muscles relax and if she was really lucky a certain blonde doctor would join her. Those were her favorite bath times. She loved when Maura took a bath with her. Sometimes they actually bathed each other. Most of the time they just fooled around and ended up making love in the tub. Jane didn't mind at all. She loved it most when Maura gave her a sponge bath and they made love.
They set a date for their wedding and were looking for a venue. After everything that had happened with her father, Jane was adamant that she didn't want to get married in a church. Maura was fine with that, she understood Jane's reasoning. She just wanted to have the ceremony and have all of their friends and family celebrate their love for each other.
When Constance and Arthur came to town, Angela had taken Constance several times so that they could discuss their wedding ideas. Jane and Maura had written down what they wanted and figured they would let their mothers have all the fun of planning the wedding. Their mothers wanted to be involved so much so they just let them run with it.
Constance was excellent at planning a party and a wedding was very similar. They never had any second thoughts about whether their mothers could handle planning their wedding. The only part of the wedding that the mothers couldn't handle was what the couple would be wearing. They would take care of that themselves.
Jane and Maura were happy. They told their mothers not to let them know about their wedding plans, they wanted it to be a surprise, except for the venue, they would like to know that. They knew that they were missing out on some of the traditional tasks associated with wedding preparations, such as cake tasting but it didn't matter. In their minds they were married already and the actual ceremony, which they knew they would enjoy was really just for their family and friends.
Jane and Maura took a long weekend away from everyone and everything and went to the Isles' home in the Hamptons. They turned off their cell phones and told everybody they would see them Monday when they got back to work. They were not going to let anything disturb them. Well until a frisbee came flying into Jane's lap while she and Maura were sitting on the beach. A man came over to retrieve the frisbee and introduced himself. "Hello, my name is Richard …"
Before he could finish Jane spoke, "Castle, you are Richard Castle, the best-selling author."
"Yes, I am." He said as a beautiful woman walked up and took his hand, "and this is my wife, "Kate Beckett."
"You're Captain Kate Beckett, with NYPD." Jane exclaimed.
"Yes." Kate said surprised that this woman knew who she was.
"I'm Detective Jane Rizzoli and this is Dr. Maura Isles. We are with the Boston Police Department."
"Well, it is nice to meet two such beautiful law enforcement officials." Castle stated as Kate smacked him on the arm. "Ow, Kate, that hurt."
"I hope it did, Castle. So which department do the two of your work with?" Kate asked and then continued, "Wait, I know who you are. You were in the news awhile back Detective Rizzoli."
"Please call me Jane, and yes I was involved in a case that gained national attention."
"Charles Hoyt, the serial killer." Kate said as Jane and Maura cringed at the mention of his name. "I'm sorry." Kate said as she looked at their faces. "I shouldn't have said his name. I should have been more sensitive."
"It's okay, Captain Beckett." Jane offered.
"Please Jane, call me Kate and call this clown, Rick or Castle. After all these years I still call him Castle. It is a hard habit to break." Kate explained.
"Yes, I understand that. I find it strange when Maura calls other police officers by their first names instead of their last name."
"Dr. Isles, you are the Chief Medical Examiner, correct?"
"Yes, and in that capacity, I work very closely with my wife." Maura realized she said wife and looked at Jane.
"Oh, so you two are married?" Castle asked.
"Yes, although or marriage is a secret to almost everybody. They know that we are together and that we will be having a wedding soon but we wanted to get married quicker so we met with the judge and got hitched in private." Jane told the other couple.
"Are you renting this house? I know I have seen an older couple here before but not for a few years." Kate said.
"No, my family owns this house. That older couple would be my parents, Arthur and Constance Isles." Maura explained.
"Oh, yes, we met them at a party a few years back." Kate replied after remembering the older Isles couple.
"We were just sneaking around for a weekend away from all of the wedding preparations. We are letting our mothers handle the event. They wanted to be involved so we are letting them run with it. They mentioned using the grounds here for the ceremony so we wanted to check it out before our big day." Maura informed them.
"Well, we won't keep you, sorry about my husband's wild throwing of our frisbee. Maybe we will see you again." Kate stated as she grabbed Castle's hand so they could walk back to their part of the beach.
"Might you want to join us for dinner. I have enough food and it would be nice to continue our conversation over food and wine." Maura asked hoping that they would say yes. She was getting better at social interactions and she thought this couple seemed nice.
Kate looked at Castle and before she could reply he said, "We would love to." The four of them went inside and Maura and Castle prepared their meal while Kate and Jane talked in the living room. They both worked homicide and shared stories of their past cases. They enjoyed their meal and chatting about cases until almost 2 AM.
They all were having so much fun they agreed to have dinner the next evening at Kate and Castle's house next door. It was a chance meeting that the two couples would be in the Hamptons at the same time, but both couples were happy that they had met each other. They each felt like they had met some lifelong friends.
Castle managed to tell Kate, "Kate, think of the stories I could write about the three of you. I can see it now a serial killer who crosses states and the three of you end up working together to solve the case. I think I can pull another best seller or two or three out of this."
"Please Castle can we just enjoy the rest of our evening. I thought you said you wanted to show me something?" Kate told him.
"Oh yes, I was reading this sex position book and I thought it might be nice to try out a few of those positions." Castle was going to continue but his wife kissed him and he forgot what he was saying.
Jane and Maura managed to get some sleep over the weekend and when they weren't visiting with Kate and Castle, they were in bed showing appreciation for one another. They felt a wedding in the Hamptons would be perfect.
When they got back to Boston, they let their mothers know that they approved the wedding venue. In eight weeks, they would have their official ceremony, they were excited. They informed their mothers that they had met a couple while they were in the Hamptons and that they had invited their new friends to the wedding. Constance immediately added their names to the guest list. Constance had forgotten that the famous author had a house next door to them in the Hamptons.
