How They Met

Mercedes was excited about her first day of school, her mother dressed her in a pretty blue dress and frilly white socks with cute shoes to match. Her hair was in two curly pigtails with ribbons that matched the blue in her dress.

She had never been a shy child but she also wasn't a very social one either. After her mother pulled to the school, she escorted her daughter to her kindergarten classroom, it was the same classroom she visited a few weeks ago only this time she would be staying without her mother.

Though that thought made her feel like crying she was far to excited about making new friends to even care. When they finally reached her class room Mercedes' mom stopped and kneeled down smiling at her adorable daughter.

"Okay baby girl, mommy is going to let you go inside alone."

"Okay mommy, bye!" Mercedes said and started to turn to leave before she saw her mother's sad smile.

"It's okay mommy! I love you." She added giving her a big hug. Her mother hugged her back before placing a kiss on her chunky cheek.

"I love you too sweet girl. I'll see you after school."

Mercedes waved and walked into her classroom smiling from ear to ear, she was entirely sure what she should do first but when she noticed a boy putting his backpack away she decided to copy him.

She timidly walked over and noticed her name was on one of the cubbies and placed hers inside. The boy smiled and fave her slight wave before looking at her cubby trying to read her name.

"What's your name? " He asked softly and she smiled.

"Mercedes, what's your name?"

"Sam." He answered giving her a quick hug. "I like your hair... it's pretty!"

"Thank you Sammy! I like your shirt."

"Okay you two have a seat." Their teacher said sweetly and they walked to their seats which were right next to each other.

The first half of the day was filled with many activities and both Sam and Mercedes enjoyed getting to know each other as best as two five year olds could. When it was time for lunch the two sat together enjoying sharing their lunches before two kids from their class walked over to them.

"Hi, I'm Tina... can we sit with you?" A cute raven haired girl asked barely above a whisper.

"Sure!" Mercedes said with a bright smile and moved over so they could join them.

"Thanks, this is Artie!" Tina said as she and the cute little brown haired boy with glasses sat down with them. They all talked about random things until lunch was over and it was time for recess. The four of them all played together and everything was going smoothly until a boy from another class started teasing Mercedes. She'd somehow gotten separated from everyone else and the boy kept chasing her until he cornered her and pulled one of her pigtails hard making her cry. Sam heard her and quickly ran over pushing the boy down so hard he fell and hurt his arm.

"Samuel Evans we do not hit other students!" Their teacher said having only seen what Sam did.

"B-but Mrs. Franklin he hurt Mercedes." Sam said starting to cry as well.

"It's okay Sammy, don't cry." Mercedes said still sniffling and giving him a hug.

"Okay you three, let's go I'm going to call your parents and let them know what happened." Mrs. Franklin said.

After their teacher called their parents, Mercedes was told her mother would be there to pick her up shortly. She didn't want to leave and began to crying but stopped when Sam gave a soft kiss on the cheek.

"My mommy does that when I'm sad." He said with a smiling hoping it would make her feel better.

"My mommy kisses me here when I'm sad." She replied pointing at her forehead abd sniffling. Sam nodded and kissed her on her forehead hoping it help.=ed.

"Is that better?" He asked.

"Mhm. Thanks Sammy!" She replied giving him a hug right as her mother walked inside with a worried look on her face.

"Oh sweet pea, are you okay?" Her mother asked kneeling down to her eye level.

"Yes, Sammy kissed me here and now I feel better." Mercedes responded pointing to her forehead again and her mother chuckled looking at the cute boy sitting next to her daughter.

"Well hello there handsome, I want to thank you for making my baby girl all better." She said smiling at Sam who smiled back brightly before walking over to the receptionist to let her know she was there to take Mercedes home.

"Okay baby girl, let's go." She said holding her hand out for her.

"Can he come with us?" Mercedes asked standing up and grabbing Sam's hand.

"Oh Cedes, I can't take him but maybe I can get his parents information and set up a play date." She offered with a hopeful smile before it quickly fell when her daughter pouted and she tried to will herself not give in but when she looked at Sam's face she caved completely.

"Oh dear Lord. Excuse me… is there anyway I can get his parent's contact information?" She asked the receptionist who witness the whole encounter before nodding and stepping away for a moment.

"Mrs. Jones, his parents will be here shortly if you're willing to wait."

"I don't think I have a choice."

"Sam are you okay?" A man asked once he saw him sitting there with a little girl and who she assumed was her mother.

"Yes, can I go with Mercedes?" Sam asked with a smile.

"Hi I'm Melissa Jones, Mercedes' mom and they have requested to leave together. I'm sorry if this is inconveniencing you but I couldn't say no to those faces." Melissa said introducing herself.

"Dwight and this is my wife Mary." He replied shaking her hand but his wife didn't seem interested in what was going on around her.

"Nice to meet you both, we live right on East Hickory, you're more than welcome to follow and stay while they play assuming he can come." Melissa said winking at Sam.

"We're on Schauffer so we're only a block away, what do you say bud? Can you be good and do as Mrs. Jones says?" Dwight asked smiling when his son nodded quickly before giving him a hug then his mother.

"Here's my number and address, you can call whenever you're ready for me to bring him home." Melissa said taking out a pen and piece of paper before writing her information down.

"Alright kiddies we ready to go?" Melissa asked smiling at them both.
