A/N: Little chapter mainly focusing on their parents :)

Age 7

Thick and Thin

"Mercedes sweetheart, I need to talk to you." Melissa said sitting her daughter down to have a hard conversation with her.

"Okay mommy."

"Baby, I want you to know that you are very loved by both me and your father. I also want you to know that none of this is your fault and I know you won't understand fully now but when you get older and want to talk about this I'll be right here okay?" Melissa said with a reassuring smile and Mercedes just nodded having the urge to cry for some reason.

"Your daddy and I are separating, which means he won't be living here anymore and you will get to see him on the weekends." Melissa said pausing allowing her daughter a minute to try to process what she told her.

"Why is daddy leaving?" She asked innocently but Melissa heard the uncertainty in her voice.

"Well, it's because we just don't love each other any more but we are still very much friends and will always be there for you no matter what okay sweet pea?" Melissa said pulling her into a hug.

"Are you sad mommy?" She asked hugging her mother back and Melissa had to hold back her tears because she knew her daughter was sweet but her question was very touching.

"I am baby but I also want what's best for all of us."

"I love you mommy and it's gonna be okay." Mercedes replied smiling her mother.

"I love you too baby girl."

KNOCK! KNOCK!

"Ugh who the hell." Melissa said rolling over looking at the clock on her night stand seeing that it was three in the morning.

KNOCK! KNOCK!

"Mommy?" She heard Mercedes's soft voice before scrambling out of the bed and going to her room.

"What's wrong baby?"

"Someone's banging on the door." She said with the covers up to her chin.

"I know, I'll be right back stay here." Melissa said before walking out of her room and downstairs to the front door.

"Who's there?"

"Mel, it's me Dwight." She heard coming from the other side of the door before quickly opening it seeing a sleepy Sam and red eyed Dwight.

'What's wrong?" She asked moving aside letting them in, they walked over to the couch where Dwight sat down before placing his head into his hands letting out a soft sob. Melissa was shocked but quickly bounced back picking Sam up and carrying him upstairs to Mercedes' room, she saw her daughter's big doe eyes looking at her before placing Sam in bed beside her.

"Are you okay sweetie?" She asked Sam who just yawned and nodded. "Baby girl are you okay?"

"Yes."

"Okay, I'm going to be downstairs with Sam's dad you two get some sleep." She said before giving them both a kiss on the forehead and leaving again.

"Sammy what's going on?" Mercedes asked Sam who just shrugged but she could tell he was scared.

"There were loud noises and my mom and my dad were yelling then I heard a loud slam before my dad came and got me now we're here." Sam said yawning again, Mercedes didn't fully understand but she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek before giving him a hug.

"Dwight what's going on?" Melissa asked after getting back down stairs careful to keep her voice low.

"She left." Dwight responded shaking his head in disbelief.

"What do you mean she left?"

"She said she didn't want to be stuck anymore and that I can keep Sam before leaving. I tried to talk to her and maybe I should have changed my tone but none of this makes sense… I didn't know she felt that way otherwise I would have changed whatever that was bothering her." He replied getting choked up.

"Oh Dwight… I'm sorry. I-" Melissa didn't know what to say because her own marriage just ended but it wasn't this bad.

"Mel, she wouldn't even say goodbye to Sam… I have to explain to my son that his mother left and I don't have any real answers as to why. I don't know how to handle this… I work overnights and am out of town twice a month how the hell am I going to be there for my son?" He asked looking at her with fresh tears in his eyes and she had to look a way for a moment.

"I can help, I will help. I can get Sam on your night shifts until you can get it changed to the day and he can stay when you have to go out of town. It's not problem really, they have regular sleep overs anyway." She said sitting next to her friend giving him a reassuring smile.

"I can't ask you to do that..."

"Does it seem like I'm giving you a choice? Look, Sam's good to stay tonight and tomorrow but you need to go and get yourself together. Come back ready to explain to Sam what's going on and know that if you ever show up to my house at three in the damn morning with that damn baby without calling again I will shoot you." She said making him chuckle before he pulled her into a tight hug.

"Thank you Mel." He said getting up and walking to the door look up at the stairs.

"He's fine and he knows you love him, go take care of you." She said nudging him lightly.

"For what it's worth Greg really fucked up losing you." Dwight said with a small smile before leaving and she let out a sigh agreeing with him because she was amazing and knew it.

Dwight came over after getting everything together and printing out his schedule for Melissa and told her he would cover the days she needed a break, it wasn't easy explaining everything to Sam but he managed to do it with promising his son that no matter what he'd always be there. After a few weeks everyone got use to their new routine, Sam and Mercedes both perfectly happy with having the arrangement because it allowed them to spend more time together.
