Chapter 21
Arizona's P.O.V:
It's been a month since I told Callie about the baby. She seemed okay, but I think that she was a little more shocked than anything. Since the day I told her, we've been hanging out a little more, trying to get to know each other and work out our plans to get ready for the baby's arrival even though we still have some time. Today we have our sixteenth week ultrasound. Callie had to miss our last appointment due to issues at work, but she was able to go with me today. We've been waiting for Dr. Capshaw to come in for about twenty minutes. As we waited, Callie would not sit still. Every few minutes, she would get up and start pacing the floor.
"Callie, are you okay?"
"Yeah. I'm sorry," she says apologetically, "I'm just really nervous is all,"
"I know. I am too, but your pacing won't help any," I tell her, "Why don't you come stand over here by me," She comes to stand next to me and I place a gentle hand on her arm. Her brown eyes find mine, "It's okay," she gives me a soft smile, then places her hand on top of mine. This is the first time we had any type of physical contact since the night we slept together five months ago.
"I was wondering if you wanted to have dinner with me tonight?" She asks.
"Like a date?" I ask her.
"Yeah, like a date," she parrots. I'm about to answer her when all of sudden, there was a knock and then the door opens and Dr. Capshaw walks in.
"Hi, Arizona, great to see you again. How have you been feeling?"
"Hi Dr. Capshaw. I'm feeling okay. Still have some morning sickness, but other than that, I've been fine," I answer.
"That's good. And that's normal. Sometimes morning sickness can last the entire pregnancy, or just the few months. Sometimes women don't even have it at all," Dr. Capshaw says, "I'm so sorry for the wait. We had a lot of appointments scheduled today, so it's been a little hectic,"
"It's okay," I say to her.
"So, your vitals look great, and your blood pressure seems be at a normal range. Any pain or discomfort?"
"Nope, none," I say shaking my head. Dr. Capshaw writes a little in the chart, then turns her attention back to me.
"Alright, how about we get your exam out of the way, then get going on the sonogram. How's that sound?"
"Sounds great," I smile. I slouch down a little and Dr. Capshaw slides between my legs to begin my exam. The exam last ten minutes.
"Everything looks good, Arizona," Dr. Capshaw says, snapping off her gloves, then reaches for a clean pair, "Now comes the fun part,"
I lift my shirt up and wait for the cold gel to be squirted onto my stomach. Callie starts to shift nervously, so lace her hand with mine to get to calm down again.
"Alright," Dr. Capshaw says, "there's your baby,"
"Oh my god," Callie says, her voice low and husky. Dr. Capshaw flips the switch, and a loud swooshing fills the room. When I look up at Callie, a broad smile appears on her face.
"You ladies want to know the sex?"
"Yes! No!" comes both our reply. I really didn't know want to know the sex. Callie just looks at me, her smile turning into a small frown.
"I don't want to know," I say to both of them, but mostly directed towards Callie.
"Ok, then we won't know. We will wait until it's time for him or her to come," Dr. Capshaw just gave us a nod, then switches off the screen, I immediately let go of Callie's hand to take the towel that was being handed to me to wipe the gel off my stomach.
"Ok, I printed doubles that way both you and Callie can have copies. Is that, ok?"
"Yeah, fine." I said, being a little short.
After scheduling the next appointment, Callie and I walked out of the Drs. office.
"Oh my god, that was amazing." Callie says excitingly as we walked out to her car. "I can't believe that was our baby. And then hearing the heartbeat? Oh man that was just incredible,"
"Yeah," I say quietly.
"Thank you so much, Arizona. You know, for letting me be there with you today. And I'm sorry I couldn't make our last appointment,"
"It's fine," I say again as I climb into the passenger seat of Callie's mustang. I'm not much for many words today and judging by the look Callie was giving me, she noticed too.
"What's wrong? Weren't you excited after seeing and hearing our baby's heartbeat?"
"Yeah. I am." I tell her.
"You sure don't seem like it. I mean, most couples would be floating on..."
"Were not a couple, Callie." I snapped. My mood had changed fairly quickly compared to when we first walked in.
"I know we aren't, Arizona. I'm just saying. What's gotten into you today? You seemed fine back there,"
"I just don't feel well and I'm tired. I didn't get much sleep last night."
"Was it the morning sickness? Are you still getting that?"
"Yeah, I am. Not as much as I did in the beginning, but I still get it. But it's mostly at the night now,"
"Oh...okay. Well, I will take you home so you can get some rest," she says, starting the car, then shifting into drive.
After pulling into the drive a few minutes later, I jumped out of the car and headed towards the door with Callie right behind me.
"Thanks for letting me be a part of all this," Callie says to me.
"You're welcome," I say to her, "I'm going to go lay down,"
"Yeah, sure," she says. She tries to place a kiss on my cheek, but I just turn my head, she pulls back, looking a little hurt, "Okay, well I will see you,"
"See ya," I say quietly, then disappear behind the door.
"Arizona, wake up." came a voice. When I opened my eyes, I saw Teddy sitting on the edge of my bed. I close my eyes again trying to ignore her. Growing a tiny human is exhausting and after the day I had, all I wanted to do was sleep. But apparently Teddy wasn't having it because I felt her shake me to get me to wake up.
"Stop shaking me, Teddy. Geez," letting out a tired growl.
"I just wanted to let you know that Callie is here,"
I just let out a groan. "I didn't know she was coming over,"
"I invited her," I hear Teddy say, "I was able to catch her before she left after dropping you off. I ended up inviting her over for dinner. Now come on, get up," she says, giving me a slap on the ass. I let out another growl, then finally sat up. After rubbing my eyes, I finally got up and made my way out to join Teddy, Tim, and Callie.
"Oh, hey, there she is," Tim says as I enter the room.
"Yeah, I'm right here," I quip back. Tim just backs off a bit.
"Here we go. The beast has officially woken," he says under his breath. Not sure if he expected me to hear him or not, but I heard him alright. I flip him the finger, then made my way to the coffee pot. When he saw that I was pouring myself a cup of coffee, he ran over and snatched my mug from me, "No, No. Zona, no coffee, it's not good for the baby,"
"Tim, give me back my fucking mug before I go find a brick and throw it at you." I say through gritted teeth. He hands me back my mug, then takes a step back. I heard Teddy start laughing. I'm glad she finds this funny because I sure the hell don't.
At dinner, the table was completely silent. No one seemed to have much to say. Not even Callie. After biting Tim's head off earlier, she was probably afraid to say anything that would piss me off.
"How did the appointment go?" Tim asked, breaking the awkward silence we all had going.
"Fine." "Great." Callie and I both say, looking at each other.
"I bet it was awesome seeing your baby, wasn't it Callie?" Teddy mentions.
"Oh god, it was amazing. My heart melted just seeing it. I nearly cried when I heard the heartbeat.
"Aww," Tim and Teddy say together.
"That's so cute," Teddy says before turning her attention to Tim. "I hope that's how your reaction when we see our baby for the first-time next week." My head flew in Teddy's direction.
"What?" I asked, looking between Teddy and Tim.
"Well, nice to see that you joined into the conversation, Arizona." Laughing at my reaction.
"Since when?"
"Oh, I'm not really pregnant, I just need to say something to get your attention,"
"That's not funny," I tell her.
"Yeah, it was, you should have seen the look on your face. It was priceless,"
I gave my best friend a dirty look, "That was a dirty trick."
"Oh well." She says with a shrug.
"Now, back to the topic we were on. Did you guys find out the sex today."
"No, Arizona didn't want to know, so I agreed not to know either,"
"You say that like it's a bad thing, Callie." I say, snapping at her. " If you really wanted to know, you could have asked the Dr. to turn the screen so I couldn't see it," This conversation was now starting to heat up. I know it's ridiculous to pick a fight, considering we had been hanging out and getting a long for the last month, but with the hormones, my mood did a complete 180.
"It's whatever you wanted, Arizona," Callie tells me, "You wanted to wait until we gave birth, so we decided..."
"No, when I give birth. You're not the one who's pregnant. I am. So, I'd be the one giving birth, not you," I shout, cutting her off.
She lets out a sigh, "Ok, fine. We decided to wait until after...you…give birth," pointing a finger a finger at me, "Are you happy."
"Ok, I think it's time to change the subject now," Teddy says, but I just ignore her.
"No, not really. I'm also not happy about the fact that you went along with me, and now sitting here practically saying that it was my fault that you didn't get to find out the sex."
"Arizona, I'm not blaming you. I'm sorry that you feel like I am." I don't say anything, I just cross my arms. "You look beautiful, by the way."
"Oh, shut up." I snap. I excuse myself from the table and made my way down the hall to my room. Even with my door shut, I could still hear them talking about me, which starts aggravating me even more.
"How much longer is she going to be like this? Because this is over the top."
"Oh, you think this this is bad, wait until she gets further along. It's only going to get worse,"
Even though I wasn't in the room, the walls were kind of paper thin and even being far away from them, I was still able to hear what was being said. After five minutes of listening to their conversation, I was finally fed up with them talking about me, I decided to make it clear that I could still hear them, "Stop talking about me. I can hear you. I'm not fucking deaf, you know," I shout.
"God, I'm so glad I don't have to worry about getting pregnant," Callie says, placing her head in her hands.
