Guajay7: I kind of missed yesterday, but I made up for it today with a longer chapter. Also, I appreciate you defending me, but Lonfiretessa is somewhat right. The german ranks can be confusing.
Super Comrade: Glad to hear that you enjoyed it. It was supposed to be a reference to the ending of Demon Slayer Mugen Train movie (Lit show, no Entertainment Arc spoilers though as I only just started watching it)
lonfiretessa: Personally, I like the German Ranks (definitely not because of Eldia für alle Ewigkeith). But I can understand where you're coming from, the sudden switch can be confusing for new readers. Also, I'd like to amend your statement by saying that the Manga/Anime did use german ranks (Commandant) and both Eldia and Marley are literally based on Germany. Not to mention many of the Eldian/Marleyan Characters utilize German names.
When Alexander came too, he found himself on the back of a moving horse.
"Don't try anything stupid." Was the first thing someone said to him, he blinked, and gasped as his eyes fell on the girl's cloak.
And he realized this was the same girl who took down the Cart Titan.
"What…happened?"
"You got your asses handed to you." The girl said, with no small amount of satisfaction.
"People died! My friends, and you're happy about it?!" Alexander accused, and the girl shot him a look that said she wanted to toss him off and run him over right now.
"You want to talk about death? Look around you. We came here with two thousand men, how many do you see now?"
Alexander gasped, two…thousand? But there couldn't be more than twenty here right now…
"Shut up real quick." The girl sneered, "You're only alive because the way Alto sees it, you're useful."
Alex looked down. 2,000…2,000… the number echoed in his head. He'd abetted one of the largest mass executions in Marley's history.
The girl was right, he had no right to talk.
"He's awake, Mina?" A brown haired boy rode up to him,
"Yeah Jean, and spouting self-righteous bullshit.. 'My friends are dead, Boohoo!' What nonsense." She scoffed,
Jean looked down on Alex with pity, "Leave him be. We probably would've done the same in his shoes."
"Yeah, but I wouldn't try to act all self-righteous about it!" Mina shot back,
"You're on edge." Jean said, "We're almost back to the Walls. After that, you and Alto will have all the time you need."
Mina relaxed, "Fine…" She said,
She didn't talk to Alexander for the rest of the ride.
Following their return to a city known as 'Trost' Alexander was placed under the personal jurisdiction of the Eldian Royal Guard. Where he was shocked to learn that since his last visit, Eldia now had a functional system of railroads within the walls.
He was taken to their innermost series of walls - Sheena - where he was hastily thrown in a cell under the eye of two Royal Guards, and told to simply 'Await further instruction' as if he was one of their own, and not a prisoner on the verge of execution
Prior to the Awards Ceremony for the Shiganshina Survivors
"I see…" Historia said sadly, "So it's only the twenty of you?"
"Out of two-thousand." Alto said, he collapsed on a chair, his hands on his face, "I'm not even sure…if it was worth it. We defeated the Marleyans, yes, but we only got Bertholdt and his Colossal for all our troubles…"
"You're wrong." Historia said to him suddenly, "We were underprepared for Shiganshina and we still won. It won't happen again."
Alto looked up at the small but fierce woman in front of him, and nodded. "It will not happen again." He repeated.
"Now, come on. I want to get this over with." Historia led him out the door, and Alto followed behind her.
Eren looked over them…the terrible image of the Smiling Titan being switched with the face of Dina Fritz.
'If I tell the Military…who knows what they'll do to Alto and Historia?' He wondered, 'That if I touch a Titan of Royal Blood, I can utilize the Founding's power?'
"You idiot!" Hitch smacked Marlowe on the head, "I told you, you need to quit trying to be cool!"
"But his plan worked!" Marlowe complained, "And I'm alive, aren't I?"
"Yeah, but nearly 1,200 other people aren't!" Hitch told him, tugging on his ear.
"Come on Hitch, cut the guy some slack." Alto sighed,
Hitch looked up at the boy, and smirked. "Hello Generalfeldmarschall." She said sarcastically,
"From you, it sounds more like an insult than a sign of respect." Alto sighed,
"Yeah yeah." Hitch waved him off, "Don't screw this up, alright? Or actually, do screw it up, I need a good laugh."
"It's time." Erwin came up to the Scouts, "You should line up."
The assembled mix of the twenty Scouts and Guardsmen kneeled before Kaiserin Historia. Behind them, officers from all of Eldia's branches stood solemnly in respect.
Without speaking, Historia grabbed two boxes, and opened the first, revealing a set of ten medals.
"It told us one thing."
"There will be no peace with Marley."
'Is he right?' Eren wondered, 'Is there truly…no other option? No other way? Did we find hope for our future? Or despair for our own brethren suffering beyond the walls.'
Hanji kissed Historia's hand respectfully after she tightened her medal. Historia then moved on to Eren, gently placing the medal around his neck. She tightened it and stuck her hand out for the customary kiss.
'I'd gladly…give up my own life if it managed to change something.' Eren thought, as he lifted up Historia's hand, and kissed it.
Lightning shot through his body, images burned through his head at a rapid speed-
A radio announced Marley's capture of Mitras and victory over Eldia as Mikasa touched Eren's cold face, and lifted it up giving him one last kiss, she smiled. "See you later…Eren."
An older eren with loose hair mirthlessly laughed at a much aged Zeke, before his face turned to rage. "Sorry brother, but I only played you in order to get here. 'Euthanize all Eldians'?! There is no way I'd support such a fucked up plan!"
"I am an Eldian who came from outside the walls!"
"Hear me, subjects of Ymir! My name is Eren Yeager!"
"Eren?" Historia only had a brief moment to think before she was plunged into an icy darkness.
"That…is my true plan." An older Eren explained to her, "I wish there was another way…"
"The only way to win is to fight!" The Jaegerists roared.
"We have her." A soldier pushed her forward, to a Marleyan Staff Officer who - surprisingly - had an Eldian armband. "Historia Reiss - Eldias Kaiserin."
"Eren?" Alto moved to touch Eren and to rouse him out of his daze, and he too…was caught in the icy darkness of Titan memories.
"Eren!" The Flare Titan roared, barely catching Eren's head in the palm of his hand.
"You're not…going to stop it?" Eren asked him, as Alto ran past him, to Ymir.
"You fool!" Zeke screamed, "Eren will destroy us all!"
Alto ignored them, tackling Ymir "Ymir! You are free! So I beg of you, lend us your strength and save our home!"
A red-haired girl placed a hand on Alto's cold jugular "He's dead…shot himself."
Mina Karolina lies in a bloody heap beside him, their hands still touching, seemingly ignorant of the Marleyans surrounding her, she whispers "My King…" Before closing her eyes, Alto knew she wasn't opening them again
Evangelica stood over them with cold eyes, "This…was Paradis's ultimate fate. I'm sorry." She shook her steaming hand, healing a small cut.
"Where…am I?" The three of them thought simultaneously, the scene rapidly formed around him. It was 845, and Grisha was leaving the temple where he'd just slaughtered the Reiss family.
"Zeke…I'm so sorry." Grisha grabbed the ghostly specter of Zeke Jaeger, the Beast Titan
"Dad…" Zeke muttered
"If only…I'd played with you more. I love you, more than you'll ever know, I've made…so many mistakes…but still…not for me, but for everyone…you need to stop them! Eren and Alto!"
The scene changed once again, they were in a desert, Mikasa was leaping off the shoulders of a colossal Titan as Levi fired a thunder spear into his mouth, creating a gap in his teeth.
Mikasa entered it, and drew her ODM blade, a tear rolled down her cheek, "See you later…Eren."
The scene changed, it was still the same desert, but instead of focusing on the Colossal Titan Eren inhabited, which was steaming and dead, the center of the vision was a bright light as the Source of All Life fused together with the Flare Titan,
"How?! We killed Eren already?!" Jean shouted in shock, already out of his Titanified form from Eren's death.
"It was only for a brief moment-" Mina loaded a Thunder Spear, "-but for a moment, the Power of the Titans no longer existed, until the Worm fused with Alto."
"I can-" Mikasa stepped forward, but Mina stopped her.
"I will." Mina says to her, "I…need to do this."
Mikasa stepped back, understanding horror playing across her face. "No…" She breathed,
"I made a promise." Mina fought back a sob, "We wouldn't be apart."
The scene flashed forward, Mina had attached herself to the wing of the Dragon, roaring it tried throwing her off, but she reeled her cable in, using the momentum to launch herself into the air. Mikasa fired a Thunder Spear into his mouth right as Alto unleashed a torrent of flame at her, and Mina slid down his throat as it dissipated
The dragon gagged as she slid down it's throat, "Right here!" Right as she passed Alto's center, she stuck her thunder spear inside, in the small space of it's throat…there was no escaping the blast
The scene switched again. Mina was badly burnt, and was cradling Alto's lifeless body. Mikasa joined her, hugging Eren's lifeless head.
"Hey…do you think we'll see them again?" Mina rasped out,
"I know we will…we'll see them all again. Sasha, Hannes…" Her voice faded, and she closed her eyes.
Mikasa was dead from her burn wounds.
Mina looked forward, her friends were running towards her…they were shouting something…were they..concerned, pleading? It sounded so, but she couldn't make out the words.
"My king…" She whispered to Alto, as Jean reached her, his mouth moving, but she could no longer hear the sound.
"Goodbye…all of you." She told the gathered crowd, as she closed her eyes one last time.
Evangelica stepped forward, taking her white royal guards cloak, she wrapped it around her.
"Goodbye…Mina Karolina." Evangelica whispered back.
More scenes played, of past, present and future. Falco inheriting Ymir's Jaw Titan. Zeke destroys Marleyan Airships. Paradis being destroyed by enigmatic enemy bombers. A boy running through the woods, before stopping in front of a tree with a cavern at it's base. Until they were all one in their memories, and suddenly, they were violently shot out like a cannon.
…and they were back.
Alto breathed heavily, Historia looked as if she might faint, Eren was frozen in his pose with gritted teeth.
Eren could barely think.
Could barely move. He looked up at the ceiling, 'Why?' He wondered, 'Why did this happen?!'
Alto came up behind him, his face looking as if it aged three years in the past three minutes. He opened his mouth:
"What have we done?"
"I wonder what that was about?" Mina wondered. After the ceremony, Historia had quickly pulled Alto and Eren aside with no explanation.
"It was so weird, looking at them made me feel chilly for some reason." Connie said,
"Who knows, maybe something to do with Eren's Titan powers." Jean shrugged,
As if saying his name summoned him, Eren, Historia, and Alto all left out of a room in front of them. Their faces impassive masks.
"You guys have seen better days." Connie scoffed, "What happened back there?"
"My Titan Powers." Eren shrugged, "Something about the Founding Titan."
"Ah." Jean said in understanding.
"Are…you guys alright?" Mikasa asked worriedly,
Eren nodded, "I'm fine." Eren looked at Mikasa, before lowering his eyes again. "I'm just…tired." He said,
Mikasa instantly rushed over to him, and slung his arm over his shoulder. "Then you need to rest." Mikasa said instantly, and surprisingly, Eren didn't complain, but allowed Mikasa to carry him.
A few days later…October 5th, 845
"Alright." Hanji rubbed her hands together eagerly, "Let's see what we have to work with!" She looked upon the slightly charred machine gun with an almost predatory gleam.
"Roger," A soldier of the new Eldische Ingenieurkorps (Eldian Engineering Corps) approached the machine gun gingerly. Opening a section in the top, they inserted a belt of leftover ammunition they'd managed to recover. Figuring out how it worked took five days, six men including Hanji, and several emergency trips to the hospital.
The soldier closed the top, and sat behind it, and pulled down on the trigger. Rapidly swiveling around to aim it and ripped holes in the wooden targets.
"Woo!" Hanji cheered, but Alto stood silently behind her, before saying:
"I don't like it."
"Huh?" Hanji looked at him,
"It's too bulky, and you said it was prone to overheating quickly." He looked over it, "One, try designing an air cooling system to replace the bulky water cooling."
Hanji nodded and took notes as Alto continued, "Also, make it lightweight with simpler operation and the ability to change barrels quickly if needed."
Hanji nodded, "All right!" She said cheerfully, "We'll have this thing in production by the end of the year!"
Alto nodded, "I have another stop to make."
Wall Sheena Military Prison
Alexander sat on his cot listlessly, the Guardsmen outside his door. Suddenly, he heard quick whispering before the Guardsmen switched to attention.
"At ease." They relaxed somewhat, as two more Guardsmen arrived with a teenaged boy between them.
"Open the door." Alto nodded, and the Guardsmen complied silently.
Alto stood over the hand-cuffed Alexander.
"What is your name?" He asked,
'No need to offend whoever this is easily.' "Hauptmann Alexander Le'Chaun." Alex replied blandly. Alto nodded, as if he'd pleased him.
"I am Generalfeldmarschall Alto Burke." Alto said, "And I'm here to ask for your cooperation."
Alexander's eyes widened, "If you want intelligence on Marley-"
"That is one of the things I hope to obtain, but -" Alto looked dead into his eyes, "That's not the main reason I sought you out."
"Then for what?" Alexander asked,
"I need your help." Alto sighed, "Eldia is one hundred years behind the world in military doctrine. And I need advisors from the outside world. And you happen to be the closest."
"I'm just a Captain." Alexander scoffed, "Not a General."
"Desperate times." Alto shrugged,
"More importantly, why should I help you?" Alexander's tone darkened, "For hundreds of years, the Eldian Empire committed crimes against every nation they came across. Why would I restore it?"
Alto stood up, and turned to a Guardsman. "Key?" He asked, and he received it.
"I want to show you something." Alto unlocked his handcuffs,
Alexander blinked, realizing just how long he'd been in that prison.
"Come on." Alto told him, approaching a carriage, he opened the door, allowing Alex and the Royal Guards inside.
"What do you want to show me?" Alexander asked,
"You'll see." Alto said simply, looking out the window.
After a few minutes, Ehrmich District finally came into view, and right outside, rather than going into the city. The carriage pulled up beside a lift, and Alto hoped in.
"Alone." He turned to the Guardsmen, and despite their obvious surprise. They complied, and Alto led Alexander into the lift.
Alto helped him out of the lift, a gesture which surprised him, and led him to the edge of the wall.
"What do you see?" He asked. And Alexander could only look at him in confusion.
"What do you see?" Alto asked again, and Alexander looked around
In the distance, a steam engine train traveled to an unknown destination. Carrying rail cars full of cargo.
In the city mother grabbed her child and the girl gave a surprised squeal.
He saw in the distance a man storming out of a shop angrily.
He saw a drunk take the last sip out of a now-empty whiskey bottle.
He saw a young couple lead each other through the streets. Giggling and giving each other quick hidden pecks on the cheek.
He saw…
"People." Alexander answered, "It's all…people." Alexander said, as if surprised. He'd expected…well, he wasn't sure. But he hadn't expected this, they didn't look the part of genocidal devils. They just seemed like they wanted to go about their lives.
"But…the crimes of the Eldian Empire-"
Alto looked at him, his eyes boring into him. "Did you see it happen?"
Alexander gasped, sinking to his knees and hands, he gave a quiet "...no."
"Tell me, do you know what kind of lives the Warriors lead?" Alto squatted down to his level, his eyes intense and focused on him.
"They…"
Live lives of fear.
Fear of failing, and being eaten alive by a titan.
Fear of the 13 year curse.
He thought of Pieck, who became a Warrior solely to obtain help for her ailing father. But was forced to become the lynchpin of Marley's ruthless advance.
He thought of Annie, who was desperate to see her father again.
He thought of Bertholdt, kind and sweet Bertholdt who was always a source of silent strength for the Warrior Unit.
"Do you know where they're going right now?" Alto asked, "Back to an Internment Zone, to a cage. With barbed wire and guards who will feed living children to dogs. But you've seen that haven't you? But you choose to ignore it, and to placate your conscience, you choose to focus on crimes of long-past. Crimes that have never directly affected you. You've seen suffering before your eyes, and you've chosen to ignore it."
Alexander broke down, tears streaming down his cheeks. "I…couldn't do-" He stammered out
"Couldn't do what?" Alto interrupted him, "Couldn't raise a voice of opposition? Couldn't smuggle in a bit of extra food? Couldn't help?"
Alexander gasped, "I…" He had no response.
"And now, you will hang. Not because you're a Marleyan soldier, but because you chose to turn a blind eye to the suffering of the people closest to you." Alto told him coldly, and Alexander choked out another sob. "You will die regretting every wasted moment, every moment that could've been spent just helping."
And that's when Alexander broke: "I…don't want that."
"What?"
"I want…to do something right." He said, louder this time. "I want to help! I do! I want to ensure Pieck and all the others have a future where they don't have to suffer like this! I want to help the Eldians! I'm tired of being told to turn a blind eye to things that shouldn't go ignored! I want to help you save them!" The words gushed out of his mouth, before he even knew he was saying them, "Not because I'm scared of dying, but because I'm scared that - for all my recognition and praise - I'll die without having changed a thing!"
Alto rose, a small smirk of triumph playing across his face. "Welcome to the Eldian Army." He extended a hand.
Alexander looked up at the extended hand,
And, determination steeling his gaze, he took it.
The next day…
The next day, Alexander was officially granted the position of - Foreign Military Advisor - and was allowed to attend a meeting to discuss Eldia's military.
"Ladies and Gentlemen." Alto stepped forward, Alexander hesitantly at his side. "I would like to present to you our foreign military advisor. Captain Alexander Le'Chaun."
The assembled officers gasped with surprise. "The captured Marleyan?!" Nile asked incredulously.
"Yes, but he's a free man now. And he's chosen to help us develop our military."
Historia gave a nod of approval, and approached Alexander, "I'm happy to meet you, Hauptmann Le'Chaun. I am Historia Reiss, current Kaiserin of Eldia."
Alex gasped, 'The Kaiserin herself?' Alexander looked down on the petite woman, and saw something in her gaze that was commanding and dominant. Something that told him that this woman was destined to lead.
"Your Highness." Alexander bowed,
"Allow me to introduce the Heer Oberkommando. First, we have Rosalie Dumarque, Eldian Intelligence Service, she'll be probing your brain for any and all information on Marley-" Alto gave a mirthless joke as the blonde woman smiled graciously. "Next, we have Generalleutenant Erwin Smith, Commander of the Survey Corps. He was responsible for our victory at Shiganshina." Alto moved on, "Next, Generalfeldmarschall Kassandra Rivers, commander of the Eldische Bodentruppen. Between me, her, and Rosalie, you'll be working most closely with them." He approached Armin, who was fidgeting in the corner, "This is Oberst Armin Arlelt, he's our strategic advisor here." He patted him on the back before moving on. "And Finally-" He was rudely interrupted by a door opening and Hanji bursting in wildly.
"Oops! Sorry I'm late! I was messing around with those rapid-gun thingies!" Hanji said, "Oooh who's this?!" Hanji asked, sticking her nose into Alexander's face.
Alto sighed, "Oberst Hanji Zoe, leader of the new Eldian Engineering Corps. You'll be telling her about Marleyan technology and how we compare as well."
He proceeded to go on to name Pyxis and Nile before finally getting to Zachary, "And finally, my direct superior, Premier of the Eldische Heer Darius Zachary." The man adjusted his glasses and nodded.
Alexander saluted, "Captain Alexander Le'Chaun, at your service!"
Alto looked at him, 'Perhaps he needn't die this time.' He smiled to himself, as they proceeded to get to work.
"Now then…our first order of business should be to rework this atlas of yours…" Alexander stepped forward.
Excerpt from "The Second Great Titan War - The Origin"
With Alexander Le'Chaun's induction into the Eldische Heer, it seemed his presence naturally leapt the Eldian Military forward by leaps and bounds.
By late November, with the aid and oversight of Alexander Le'Chaun, Eldia had developed its own new infantry weapons, on par with those utilized by Marley and the rest of the world.
The revolutionary design of the MG 50 as a cheap, simple and easily mass produced but also more efficient and deady machine gun would prove invaluable in the upcoming war.
As the snows began, Eldia's howitzers finally fell silent and the Executioner finally ceased in front of Trost.
However, while their guns may have ceased to fire, their advancement continued. Military doctrine under the advice of Alexander Le'Chaun drastically changed. Turning the Eldische Heer from an organization of effective titan-slayers to a multifaceted and disciplined army.
Finally, when the thaw came in late February of 851, the Kaiserreich announced that Wall Maria was officially safe for resettling, and soon after, the refugees of Wall Maria were allowed to take to their homes as the comprehensive railroad system developed in Wall Sheena and Rose was extended to Maria and even beyond it as the Eldische Heer moved to clear Paradis of any possible Marleyan presence. Finally, on March 1st of 851, the Survey Corps continued long range operations beyond the walls…
"Hey Alex!" Jean pulled up beside him, "Are we there yet?"
"Just about!" Alexander pulled out his map of Paradis. "The docks should be right across this small stretch of desert!"
Alexander had changed over the past few months, his blonde straight cut hair had grown out, and he was dressed in the new Bodentruppen officer uniform, with a new model of interchangeable Anti-Personnel/Anti-Titan ODM gear which replaced the bulky but effective shotguns with Model 51 Maisen semi-automatic pistols based on the ones captured from the wreckage of the Cart Titan's armor.
Every member of the expedition had a new Jäger 51 Rifle slung on their backs. However, their sets of ODM varied, Levi simply carried the normal Anti-Titan Gear, with his Thunder Spears next to his rifle on his back. Mina, Alto, Historia Eren, Hanji, and Mikasa had an interchangeable set similar to that of Alex's. Sasha carried the regular Anti-Titan Gear as well, but had a scoped Jäger rifle rather than those with the regular iron sights. Jean, Marlowe, Armin, Floch, and Ymir all carried the new variant of Anti-Personnel Gear.
"Look!" Mina shouted, "Is that the dock you described?"
Alexander squinted, "Yep. We're here."
The Scouts slowed their horses, and approached the dock on foot, as the terrain suddenly turned into craggy cliffs, they crouched in case any Marleyan ships were around.
"It's clear." Jean motioned to them, and they found a path down the cliff and led the horses down to the water.
Mina rolled her pants, and waded into the water. "Woah! It's cold!"
Jean cupped his hands and took some water to drink, only to spit it out a second later. "And salty!"
Mikasa took out her stockings and Eren's scarf, trying to avoid wetting them.
"Hey, four eyes." Levi scolded her as she analyzed a sea cucumber. "Don't touch it. It could be poisonous."
Alexander sighed, 'No…they're not devils at all.' He thought, 'Just people. Varying kinds, but just people.' He smiled, and - releasing his ODM gear and shedding some clothes - he followed the Scouts into the water, diving into it with a splash.
Eren stood in the water, pointing out to across the sea "I wonder…if we kill all our enemies beyond the sea…will we finally…be free?"
Armin paused in the middle of analyzing a nautilus shell, Eren's question striking a chord within him.
"Who knows." Alto answered for him, placing a hand on his shoulder, "But…even if we can never truly be free. We'll always have moments like this."
Eren looked at him, then at Armin and Mikasa.
And smiled.
MG 50 - The new standard Eldian Machine Gun. Essentially it is a simplified version of the German MG 34.
Jäger 51 - The new standard Eldian rifle, it is inspired by the Kar98k utilized by Germany during WWII
Model 51 (M51) Maisen - An improved version of the standard issue Marleyan P40, which is - in turn - the equivalent of the Mauser C96.
New Anti-Personnel Gear - The AP Gear from Season 4.
Eldian Ground Forces Uniform - Essentially the Wehrmacht uniform of the Second World War, officer variants typically switch out the stalhelm for a hat with the nine pointed star of Eldia, with the appropriate epaulets.
A/N: First, I want to explain the memories shown. So essentially, the trio experienced not one but two timelines. The first was the one where Eren abandoned Paradis to live in Southern Marley with Mikasa. Essentially leaving Alto and the others to fight a doomed war which Marley won by 857.
The second was the canon-aligned timeline. Ymir ends up dying to save Falco, and rather than Zeke catching Eren's head, Alto did and helped Eren activate the Rumbling by freeing Ymir. It ultimately ends with both Eren and Alto being killed by Mina and Mikasa respectively, but with the latter women being fatally wounded in the process. The Rumbling ends, and Paradis meets the fate depicted in the extra pages.
Then, of course there's Eren and Alto manipulating Grisha. Also, as lionfiretessa inspired me to do, I'll translate all the German ranks that'll be used. I'll also use them interchangeably with their English versions.
