Chapter 2
Kitty worked downstairs in the saloon for a few hours before she went upstairs to her room to retire for the night. Matt had stopped by earlier for a drink. He told her since he had to leave early in the morning for Hays, he would just sleep at the jail. Kitty changed into a nightgown and climbed into bed. She let sleep take over.
The next morning Kitty woke up feeling rested and refreshed. She knew Matt had left for Hays a few hours ago. Kitty didn't have to work for a few more hours, so she decided after she got ready for the day, she would run some errands. Kitty walked out of the Long Branch and out onto Front Street. What she saw shocked her. Down the street was Matt.
"Matt!" Kitty called out, walking towards him.
Hearing his voice, Matt turned around. "Hello Kitty. What brings you out and about?"
"I have errands to run," Kitty answered. Then she noticed that Matt wasn't wearing his badge or his gun belt. She was very confused. "I have some questions for you. Where's your badge, your gun belt, and why aren't you on your way to Hays?"
Matt looked at Kitty, confusement all over his face. "Badge? Gun belt? Hays? What are you talking about?"
"Matt, stop playing games. Judge Brookings sent a wire yesterday saying he wanted to move Pete Kossar's trial up a week early. Since you're the Marshall that arrested him, you had to be there. You were supposed to leave this morning," Kitty answered.
"Kitty, I have no idea what you're talking about. Are you feeling alright? I'm not going to Hays for Pete Kossar's trial. I'm not even a Marshall. I own Dillon's Feed and Seed," Matt said and pointed up to a sign that said Dillon's Feed and Seed. "Dodge doesn't even have a Marshall. There's a sheriff, if you really want to call him that. I've never had the need to wear a gun working here."
Kitty did not know what to say. Something was not right. Was she still sleeping? She had to be sleeping. This had to be some sort of dream. That was the only explanation.
"I'm fine, Matt. I was just having fun with you. I better get on with my errands. I'll see ya later," Kitty said. She turned and walked away.
"You said you wished that badge didn't exist. I granted your wish. I'm going to show you what it would be like if that badge didn't exist," said a gentle voice.
Kitty turned around to see a short man wearing a suit and a top hat. He definitely was out of place in Dodge City. "Who are you?" Kitty asked.
"I'm an angel and I've been given an assignment," the man answered.
