Summary: Juudai asks what he thinks is an important question of Yubel. Yubel gives the best answer that they can.
Yubel hadn't always been a spirit. There had been a time - not one that he could clearly remember aside from little flickers o the past - when they'd been as solid as he was, no matter what. Now they were like that only when they chose to be. Juudai didn't mind too much. It had helped when it came time to fuse two souls into one. But sometimes...
"Do you miss it?" Juudai asked, running his fingers through Yubel's hair as he spoke. "I mean, do you miss being..." He wasn't even sure of what the next word should be. Yubel was so much already - Yubel was real in every sense of the word, so nothing else really made any sense. "Do you wish you weren't a spirit?" Maybe that would help.
Yubel tilted their head so that those lovely mismatched eyes sparkled at him. "No. I've never cared about whether I have a body of flesh or not. It's more convenient for some matters, but it's not necessary."
One hand reached up to rest against the side of his face. He leaned into the touch and breathed quietly. Yubel's hand was every bit as solid to him as anyone else's ever had. He closed his eyes and savored the feeling of them even more. He thought he knew what Yubel meant by it being more convenient.
"You are always what matters most to me, my beloved," Yubel murmured. "And in the world of humans - perhaps it is better if I can't be seen that often. There are too many shallow folk who judge based on appearances." Juudai didn't need to see it to know their lip curled. He also knew how right they were. "We are what we are, whether they know or care."
He wasn't going to argue that, either. Perhaps one day people here wouldn't care either. He wondered if he'd be around to see that day, in some form or other, and knew that he would. He wondered what that future would be like. He could barely imagine what tomorrow might be like, but it didn't matter overall. Not as long as he had Yubel. With the two of them being together, he could face whatever any world wanted to throw at him - and he usually did. Better him than a lot of others, after all.
"Get some sleep," Yubel advised, still touching hand to his cheek. He could feel fire deep inside of them, the flames of a dragon. "Tomorrow's going to be busy. We have a lot to do."
He wasn't going to argue that point, either. Not that he wouldn't argue with Yubel but he'd never turned down the chance for a good nap. Even less so once he'd started traveling and he never quite knew when he'd get a proper rest. So the two of them curled around one another, Yubel's wings spreading over him, and that was the last that he thought, until the new day dawned.
The End
Notes: A quickly written drabble. I had another idea but that one grew a little longer than I wanted, so I did this instead. The original idea will (hopefully) turn up next Monday.
