Chapter 3: An Explanation
Annie's POV
"Can we talk?" the man named Carlisle asked me. "It would be easier if we could all hear you as well,"
I hesitated at first. I could hear the hesitancy in the other wolves' minds as well. Then I concluded again that if they wanted to attack us they would have done so already. Also I had a lot of questions for these people. I shook my head in agreement.
Then I remembered our lack of clothing. We'd have to go get dressed first.
We turned back and sprinted to where we'd all left our clothes.
"They're just getting clothes," I heard, I think it was Edward, say.
How did he know what I was thinking? He was a mind reader? That was definitely on my list of questions to ask.
I found the place where I'd left my clothing and quickly turned back into a human. I got dressed so fast that I made myself fall. Then I regrouped with my pack at our usual meeting area.
We retraced our footsteps back to where those strange people were still waiting for us. I felt was starting to feel quite a bit nervous. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I glanced toward my pack and they all looked slightly nervous themselves.
Then out of nowhere a wave of calm washed over me. I didn't feel as anxious anymore. I took the first step in approaching them. To my complete surprise Carlisle embraced me instead of shaking my hand.
It took nearly all of my ice strength not to recoil instantly at his touch. His skin was as cold as ice. I wondered briefly if he was even alive. There was just no way that someone could be that cold.
"I'm sorry I couldn't help myself. You look a lot like my granddaughter," he explained.
"That's okay," I said when I finally found my voice.
"Why don't we go somewhere a little more comfortable so we can talk," he suggested. "Is that okay with you?"
"Yes that's fine," I said wondering what he had in mind.
As it turned out he meant their house. I was in awe of the house. It was a very big, and very open house in the middle of the forest. For a second I thought we'd all walked into a fairy tale.
Then again maybe my life was a fairy tale now. Normal people didn't morph into oversized dogs at will. It was clear that I was far from being a normal girl.
"I imagine you must have a lot of questions," Carlisle said.
"That's putting it very mildly," I said. "What are you and how did you know what we were?"
"Come here you might want to sit down for this," Carlisle suggested. I felt compelled to listen to him. So we walked over to the couches that he pointed out and sat down.
"There's really no easy way to say this," he began. "It's going to sound crazy and very hard to believe but please just hear me out. We're vampires,"
My body seemed to have locked into place. I didn't know what I had been expecting him to say but it sure as hell wasn't that.
Under normal circumstances I would've laughed and called him crazy but after witnessing just how fast they were I couldn't deny. Maybe that explained the stench also.
"Vampires," I heard Joseph say. "You're saying that you're a vampire?" he sounded just as serious as I felt. I glanced at each and every member of my pack and none of them showed any kind of indication that they thought this was funny.
"Yes," Carlisle simply answered.
I took a deep breath. This was way more than I bargained for.
"and you knew what we were. Right away you knew we weren't just wolves,"
"That's right. We've met your kind before. We know quite a few of your kind actually," the woman standing next to Carlisle said. "My name is Esme by the way. Perhaps we should all introduce ourselves,"
Though there were a lot of names to remember I was sure that I wouldn't have much difficulty in remembering. I was usually pretty good with names.
"You said that you know others like us?"
Then Carlisle said the words that I least expected to hear "We know your parents,"
I felt as though my heart was going to jump out of my chest. I'd given my biological parents a lot of thoughts over the years. Even more so lately that I had before. I'd often wondered if they were the key to this whole mess. But did I want to know them? Did they want to know me? They're the ones who gave me after all.
"Nobody gave you away," Edward said as if answering my unspoken question.
"Okay how is it that you seem to know what I'm thinking?"
"Because I do know what you're thinking. I can read minds,"
Just when I thought that this day couldn't get any stranger.
"and I also happen to know that your parents never gave any of you away. Nobody knows how but you were all kidnapped one night about sixteen years ago. Your parents have been searching desperately for you five ever since,"
Oh holy hell I felt like I was going to faint. I took a deep breath to calm myself down.
"Where are they now? Do they know we're here?" I asked.
"Not yet but they will soon," Edward answered.
I jumped at the sound of someone knocking on the door. I hadn't heard anyone coming. My mind had been too preoccupied to notice.
Carlisle went to answer the door. I stiffened when I caught the scent of that scientist that had been trying to study us.
"Can I help you?" Carlisle asked.
I got up to go see him. My suspicions were confirmed when I saw that it was indeed him. The scientist looked at me suspiciously.
"You haven't seen five giant wolves roaming around here have you?"
"I can't say that I have. Why?"
"I've been tracking these wolves. I thought for sure they were here. Oh well I'm sorry to bother you sir,"
Carlisle closed the door and looked at me oddly. "How did that human know you were here?"
I shook my head in irritation. "He's a scientist. A few months ago he found all five of us in the woods together. He shot us all with something that sedated us long enough for him to inject each and every one of us with one of those RFID microchip tracking implants. It's irritating as hell especially when he shows up at the mall or school looking for mutant wolves. But there's nothing much we can do about that,"
"I see,"
I glanced at my watch and my eyes nearly bulged out of my head. "Anyway I think it's time we all head home for the night. Our families will start looking for us if we don't,"
