Chapter 10
Kagome woke up to Steve gently shaking her awake.
"Kagome, darling, time to wake up," he said softly.
"Mhm, already?" She asked grocery.
"Yes, " he smiled softly down to her.
"Alright," she sighed, getting up slowly from the seat. "Man, I needed that nap," she yawned, rubbing her eyes.
"I bet," he smiled unbuckling. Natasha was outside of the car already. He then stopped and stared at the barb wire fence of the base. Kagome yawned again, till she saw what was ahead of them.
"Is that?" She asked in wonder leaning forward between the seats.
"Yes, it's where I came from," he sighed leaning back more into his seat. Kagome stared at him softly. She knew there was nothing she could say about, the place that made him into Captain America. Leaning forward she kissed him upon the cheek. He looked to her curiously as she pulled back smiling. His eye softened at the loving look she was sending his way. "Do you think, back then, you would go out with me? Before I became this?" He asked, gesturing to himself.
"Steve, koi, I would have loved to date you back then. After all the stories, and pictures from your time before you became the Captain. You may have gotten more physically stronger and taller, but you're still my Steve Rogers," she smiled softly. "The one that I love with all my heart," she said blushing softly.
Steve's eyes widened but soon softened into a loving face. How did he get so lucky to have this strong and kind woman to be with his.
"What about me? Would you have gone out with a ditsy, helpless, scared, and defenseless me, before I became the Shikon Miko?" She asked looking down softly.
"Oh, definitely, though I would probably have trouble approaching you," he chuckled. Kagome looked deep into his sky blue pools, and he stared into a pair of sparkling sapphires. They leaned towards each other slowly, their lips centimeters from touching.
"You guys coming?" Natasha asked, tapping the driver's side window. The couple's eyes widened and backed away from each other in embarrassment. Kagome looked down, her cheeks ablaze. Steve thought he was blushing, but sending an annoyed look to Natasha. Who was smirking worse than the Cheshire Cat at the embarrassed looks?
"Coming," Kagome said, clearing her throat. She got out of the car. Steve though banged his head against the steering wheel in frustration.
"You could not have waited 5 more minutes?" Kagome asked the assassin annoyed. Natasha merely smirked and shrugged her shoulders. "Sometimes I hate you," she sighed. Natasha just burst out laughing at her pouting face. Steve then finally got out of the car. He went straight to Kagome's side and took her hand gently.
"The signal is coming from here," Kagome said, pulling out the coordinates. Natasha went forward and picked the lock and opened the gates. Steve looked around, flashing back to his time as a private and training.
"This is a dead-end, zero wavelengths, heat signatures, not even radio,' Natasha sighed annoyed.
"Maybe it was to keep people off the trail, using a router," Kagome suggested looking around the old base. She then noticed Steve looking around the base." koi?" Kagome asked curiously.
"Army regulations forbid the building holding animation to be within 500 feet of the bricks," Steve said looking around. "This is in the wrong place," he said moving to a building. He used his shield. He went in first, Kagome following behind, and Natasha taking up the rear. They came to a wide space below the ground, S.H.I.E. insignia at the end, on the wall
"S.H.I.E.L.D?" Natasha asked, amazed.
"Where it started," Steve said amazed. Kagome looked to her right and saw a line of pictures, zeroing on one picture.
"Howard Stark," she breathed approaching the picture.
"Your grandfather?" Natasha asked in awe. Kagome merely nodded in agreement. Steve came over and wrapped his arms over his shoulders to her front. He held her close to his chest and looked to the picture as well.
"He was a brilliant man," he sighed as Kagome looked at him tilting her head back. Steve looked down lovingly at her soft face.
Back then, he never knew, he would fall in love with that brilliant man's granddaughter. Let alone planning to propose to her, and planning to spend the rest of his life with her. They looked at each other for a moment longer, then looking at the pictures again. They looked at Peggy's picture, and they smiled softly.
"I hate to break up this moment, but nothing is here," Natasha said looking around.
"Nat, have you not learned. Not everything is what it seems," Kagome smiled looking around, and leaving Steve's arms. They walked around the office curiously.
"Hey," Steve called the duo. The girls looked to him curiously across the room. "If you are working in a secret office," he said, moving a bookshelf. "Why would you need to hide the elevator?" He asked, pushing it to the side. Kagome and Natasha looked at each other surprised and entered the elevator. Steve followed them shortly behind them.
The elevator began to move down slowly. Till it stopped and opened to a dark abyss. Kagome stepped forward, the lights turning on. The trio walked forward and looked to the large and ancient computer.
"Hello, dinosaur," Kagome stepped forward with the stick. She plugged it into the port of the panel.. it began to power up the systems and rotators.
"Institute System?" The computer read.
"Yes," Kagome tipped into the computer. Then the computer began to hum to life.
"Shall we play a game?" Natasha asked in a creepy voice. "It's a reference to this movie," Natasha began to explain.
"I know, I saw it with Kags," he said gesturing to Kagome staring at the computer.
"Rogers Steve, born 1918," a male voice said. "Romanoff Natasha, born 1984," it continued. "Higurashi Kagome, born 1995," it continued.
"It's a recording," Natasha said shocked.
"I am not recording Fräulein," it said annoyed. "I may not be the same man that Captain America took me to prison in 1945 and I am," he said with an annoyed face on the screen. A picture of a man with glasses on the other screen.
"Do you know this thing?" Kagome asked, confused.
"Arnim Zola, he was a German scientist that worked for Red Skull. He died years ago," he said looking around. He began to walk around the computer.
"The first correction, I am trace," he said loudly. "Second, look around you. I have never been more alive," he said in excitement. "In 1970, I was diagnosed with a terminal illness, science could not save my body, but my brain. That was worth saving. On 200,000 data banks, you are standing in my brain," he said. Kagome looked to Steve worriedly at the man's computer explanation. Steve came back and took Kagome's hand gently.
"How did you get here?" Kagome asked icily.
"Invited," he said shortly.
"Operation Paperclip, S.H.I.E.L.D recruited scientist with strategic value," Natasha explained.
"They thought I could help their cause," he said coldly. He then explained how Hydra has been taking over S.H.I.E.L.D since the end of WW2. Also how they made people they view as threats disappear from history. Then how they planned to take over the world, by having the people give up their freedom willingly. Kagome was seething mad with Steve beside her. At the end of his description, and how Steve was nothing. Steve punched the computer screen.
"As I was saying," Arnim said appearing on another screen
"What is on this drive?" Kagome demanded as she approached the screen.
"Project Insight, an algorithm I designed," he said proudly.
"What does it do?" Natasha asked.
"It's fascinating, but sadly you'll be too dead to hear it," he said. Then the elevator doors began to close. Steve threw his shield to try and stop it.
"Steve, we have a boggy, three short-range," Natasha said looking at her phone. Kagome is going to grab the stick from\ the panel.
"From where?" Steve asked, looking at them.
"S.H.I.E.L.D," Natasha said horrified by the answer.
"You see, I have been stalling," Arnim said proudly. Kagome looked horrified, running to Steve, shoving the stick into the cross. "Admit it, Captain, it's better this way," he said almost happily. Steve yanked a grate off a drain. Kagome was the first to jump in, then Natasha jumped in. "We are both out of time," he said as the missile hit. Steve was down the hole the shield blocking the blast.
"Kagome," Steve cried, helping her up because she fell on her butt. "You ok?" He asked offering his hand to help her up.
"Yeah," she nodded allowing him to lift her to her feet.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Natasha called brushing off her clothes.
"Good to hear," Kagome smirked to her.
"Where to now?" Natasha asked looking around.
"I may know a place," he said looking to Kagome, holding her close to his chest.
Steve, Natasha, Kagome stood outside of a glass door. Steve went forward and knocked on the door briskly.
Sam Wilson approached the door and opened the blinds to the disheveled trio. Sam had Kagome close to his chest, not willing to let her go just yet.
" Sam said opening the door.
"Sorry about this, but we need somewhere to lay low," Steve said desperately.
"Everyone we know is trying to kill us," Natasha said sadly. Kagome glanced at her, concern shining in her eyes.
"Not everyone," Sam said stepping to the side.
"Thank you," Kagome said stepping out of his embrace, and bowed to him slightly.
"No problem," he smiled down to the woman. She smiled brightly, causing him to be dazed slightly. He stepped to the side, and let her enter the apartment. Natasha followed shortly after her. Steve was the last to enter and smacked Sam upside the head as he went. That seemed to knock the man out of his daze and looked to Steve sheepishly. Steve merely gave him a pointed look and followed after the girls. Sam, closed the door and blinds over it.
Kagome watched as Steve washed his face in the sink, as she dried her hair gently. She had taken a quick shower a few minutes before. Natasha sat beside her, mimicking her actions. She had taken a shower shortly after Kagome.
"You ok?" Steve asked them as he entered the room.
"Yeah," Natasha answered softly. Kagome merely nodded in agreement with Natasha. Steve came over and slid in next to hKagome, wrapping his arm around her securely.
"What's wrong?" he asked the solemn duo.
"I thought when I joined S.H.I.E.L.D, I was on the straight and narrow. But I just traded one cage, for HYDRA," she said annoyed.
"I am the one that negotiated to have a truce and somewhat alliance with S.H.I.E.L.D, to begin with, now look," Kagome groaned, putting her head into her hands.
"Now Kagome, don't go beating yourself up about that. Your group has had very little to do with S.H.I.E.L.D, so your safe as is your people," Natasha said reaching overtaking her hands.
"As it is not your fault with going on the straight and narrow," Kagome smiled returning the gesture to her friend.
"You saved my life," Natasha said looking to STeve. "I owe you," she said softly.
"It's no big deal," Steve sighed nonchalantly.
"honestly, If the roles were reversed. Would you have trusted me to save you?" Natasha asked him.
"I would now," he nodded in consent. "I am always honest," he said putting his forehead upon Kagome's side of her head.
"Natasha, I have trusted you with my life since Hong Kong. when you could have left me for dead and at the mercy of that dragon demon. But you came back and save me from his clutches," Kagome smiled softly. Natasha smiled softly at that memory. They were hunting the same target, a drug lord in hong kong. That turned out to be a very old dragon demon. Natasha knew she was over her head when he turned into his true form. Kagome had been thrown into a wall and knocked unconscious. Natasha had a clear shot to escape as the dragon approached Kagome's limp form. But as she watched him approach her, Natasha couldn't bring herself to leave her. She had lept into action without thinking. Bought them enough time till Kagome regained consciousness, and together they killed the thing.
"And I have trusted you since the whole attempt mating insurance," she smiled squeezing her hand. Steve though looked confused between the girls, not understanding the references. "Though," she trailed looking to Steve. "You seem pretty chipper for someone, who discovered they died for nothing," she smirked to him.
"Well, I am just glad, I know who I am fighting," he smirked, laying back lounging in his seat. Kagome looked over her shoulder at him and broke out into a gentle smile at him.
"So what now?" Kagome asked softly, leaning her head into STeve's shoulder. He turned his head to kiss the top of her head gently
"Hey," Sam said, entering the room. "I made breakfast. If you people are into that," he said awkwardly. Kagome giggled at his awkward nature and got up with the others.
"So, who has the power to fire a domestic missile strike at S.H.I.E.L.D?" Natasha asked meaning on the counter. Kagome was beside her nursing a cup of warm coffee in her hands.
"Pierce," steve said in realization sitting in the chair.
"Who is sitting at the top of the most protected buildings in the world. Second only to the western lands," Kagome sighed moving to sit down. Natasha followed her and sat beside her.
"He is not working alone," Steve said in thought.
"Yeah, Zola's algorithm was on the Starship you saved from pirates, right?" Kagome asked sipping her drink.
"So was Jasper Sitwell," Natasha said in revelation. Kagome and Steve looked at her in shock.
"So the real question is, how do the three hosts want people in DC to kidnap a S.H.I.E.L.D, agent in broad daylight?" Steve asked.
"You don't," Sam said, coming back into the room with a folder. He threw it down onto the table in front of STeve. "Consider this my resume," he said crossing his arms. The trio moved to stand around the folder Kagome looked over the paperwork and his missions. She hummed in thought as Natasha questioned him about a mission.
"Koi, you did not tell me he was pararescue," Kagome said, handing him a photo. It was Sam and another man.
"Is that Rohde?" he asked gently. Sam merely nodded in confirmation.
"What did you use? A stealth shoot?" Natasha asked, interested.
"No, these," he said, showing Steve a document. Steve looked on shocked at the paper.
"I thought you said you were a pilot," he said shocked.
"I never said I was a pilot," he smirked at him in humor. Kagome took the paper and studied the contents, Natasha reading over her shoulder.
"I can't ask you to do this. You just got out," Steve said shaking his head. Kagome bent down and picked up the rest of the file.
"Hey, if Captain America needs my help, I can't think of a better reason to get back in," he smiled happily to him.
"How do we get out hands on one of these?" Kagome asked, gesturing to the file in her hands.
"The last one is held in Fort Meade, behind three guarded gates, and a 12-inch steel wall," he described. The trio shared an amused look, before turning back to him.
"Should not be a problem," Steve smirked as Kagome closed the file and tossed it onto the table.
