A Big Brother

"It's too bad that Alex couldn't join us tonight," Sam murmured to her husband as she changed out of her navy evening gown that she'd worn to Tim and her, Clover, and Blaine's day-after-Valentine's double date.

While each couple had spent the weekend with just each other, they'd decided to meet up in the evening on the final day to have a meal together. Thankfully Jerry had left them alone and since Valentine's had been on a Saturday, it had given them more than enough leisure to engage in all their planned Valentine's actives and still make it to the hotel the evening of Sunday.

Running her fingers through her hair to shake it out of the high chignon bun it had been in, she removed her diamond earrings next as she kept talking to Tim who was taking off his suit on the other end of the bedroom and changing into his sleepwear; just a pair of sweatpants.

"But at least she spent the weekend with her boyfriend," Sam said looking into the mirror more at the reflection of Tim's perfect body, relishing the way the muscles of his bare, broad back bunched and eased under his tanned skin as he moved than her own face as she took off her makeup which was why she missed entirely the way he rolled his eyes at her mention of Alex's boyfriend.

"Daiten right?" She heard him correctly identify the young WOOHP agent that Alex was in love with and she nodded.

"Mmhmm." Dabbing her face with the makeup remover and finally taking her eyes off of Tim now that he was dressed, she smiled as she remembered what Alex had told her and Clover just may finally happen for her this weekend. Something she'd been waiting for all her life.

From the second Daiten, Alex's serious boyfriend of over eight months had informed her he was whisking her away on a romantic getaway for Valentine's she'd become confident that he was going to propose to her. And seeing the radio silence from Alex ever since her trip had begun she was confident that the brunette would be coming home with a sparkling ring on her finger.

"Just watch, he's finally gonna do it. He's going to propose to her by the end of the night if he hasn't already!" Sam exclaimed excitedly. She could hardly wait to start planning Alex's wedding and be a bridesmaid for it like Alex had been at her own.

But the low chuckle of disbelief that left Tim caught her off guard. Turning to look at him over her shoulder she found him shaking his head as if silently calling her naïve.

"What?" She asked annoyed leaving him to sigh before he repeated something that he'd said a hundred times since Sam had started to hint that she felt that one day Alex was going to be married to Daiten Jones.

"Come on Sammie that's what you said last month … and did it happen? Nope. Then you said the same thing two weeks ago when Alex planned to spend her birthday with him." Tim wagged a finger at her as he smirked. "Again he didn't take the initiative to propose, did he?"

Sam rolled her eyes as she listened to him list off those instances and more. There he went again questioning Daiten's commitment level to Alex. She didn't know why but Tim just… didn't like Daiten. Come to think of it, he had hated him right from the get go.

Tim was usually a great judge of character. For example he'd warned her about the intern Jerry had asked her to train (Kyle Lopez) that he was going to do something inappropriate because he seemed too smitten when he'd been told she'd be coaching him. Something he'd been right about when Kyle had attempted to get cozy with her despite her being married. But this time … he was wrong. She'd thought about it a million times but just could not figure out what he saw in Daiten that he didn't like. And as such she decided to finally bring it up.

"I don't know what you have against Daiten, Tim. He's perfectly nice," she muttered.

"He's a player," Tim retorted firmly leaving Sam to stare at him in confusion. She'd never gotten that vibe off of him anytime she'd seen him in person. Had Tim seen him messing around with some other girl?

But his next words proved that he had no such evidence of wrongful action on Daiten's part and was just going on his own gut instinct, something he trusted immensely and had all his life. "Guys just know guys, my love. I'm telling you, he's stringing Alex along."

"Well Blaine doesn't seem to think so," Sam reminded him that Blaine (another guy) got along just fine with Daiten and it was just him who seemed to have a problem with him.

But Tim just smirked unconvinced. "Well Blaine's in love with Clover also so…" he winked at her, as if to say that that disqualified him as any kind of credible judge of persona.

Sam shot him a dirty look for taking a dig at the blonde as he often liked to leaving him to shrug and hold up his hands in defence. "What? I'm serious. Daiten isn't a commitment kinda guy. Alex is wasting her time on that loser and she deserves way better."

As she listened to him Sam could not help but be amused. Tim sometimes acted like a big brother or even somewhat of a father figure when it came to her female friends. He rarely approved of anyone they dated. He'd put Blaine though the ringer (especially since he'd broken Clover's heart once) before finally accepting him. Even though he'd recognized that it was Clover's choice of whom she wanted to be with, he hadn't invited Blaine into his exclusive circle of trust until he'd carefully scrutinized him to see if he was truly worthy. Daiten though, despite months having passed, was just not making the cut.

But in the end of the day it didn't matter if he liked him or not. All that mattered was that Alex did.

"Well Alex happens to like him," she informed curtly. "So much so that she told Daiten that she could see herself marrying him some day."

Tim's face screwed up after she said that. "... She said what?" He asked slowly.

"Something wrong with admitting that?" Sam asked before smirking at him as she reminded him of an example that would hit home. "Because remember that youuuuu once asked me if I'd marry you and I said yes… and that was a while before you actually proposed to me."

Scam found himself smiling at that memory, momentarily forgetting about Alex and her boyfriend as he sauntered over to his beloved missus and pulled her snug to his chest. Reaching out he stroked her cheek with the back of his index finger as he gave her a look that burned with the hottest intensity of love. "…Do you remember when I proposed to you?"

Sam's cheeks stained a soft pink at his question and instantly she was transported to their island where he'd popped the question to her. She nodded as she reached up and wrapped her arms around his neck staring at him with loving, half lidded eyes as she sighed dreamily. "How can I ever forget? It was romantic, and intimate, and absolutely perfect."

Scam smiled wider as she pecked him on the lips for a second before smirking. "And I'm sure Daiten's proposal to Alex will be too!"

Scam almost groaned in reply. Why did she have to go ruin a perfect moment between them by mentioning that guy again?

"Sam, baby…" He mumbled holding her tighter in his arms as he tried to get through to her. When she was staring at him and only him he continued. "You know I love you, right? You're my entire world, the bane of my existence, the fuel I run on, and the reason I wake up every morning..."

Sam couldn't help but smile and let out a contented sound at his romantic gibberish. And she wondered just where he was going with it until he finally told her.

"And I respect your opinion, I really do sweetie but …" He sighed dramatically. "I have to tell you when you're wrong and you are dead wrong about Daiten."

Smacking him on the shoulder Sam shook her head refusing to budge on this no matter how hard he tried to make her. "No I'm not! You're the one who's wrong about him!" She gave him a pointed look as she poked the center of his chest. "You can be wrong about something you know?"

"Pfft, I'm never wrong," he drawled and Sam could feel a headache coming on at him displaying his typical arrogance to her. There really was no point in arguing with him about this anyway.

"I guess we'll see soon enough won't we?" Sam said deciding to drop this subject. "The weekend is over now and we should be hearing from Alex any minute."

She separated from his body moving to go brush her teeth but he grabbed her wrist and pulled her right back to him. She gasped in alarm and when her chest collided against his own she found him grinning at her wolfishly.

"I know what we can do to pass the time," he said suggestively, his voice husky and eyes dark with lust as he started to pull her closer and closer to their bed.

Sam was not putting up much of a resistance towards what he wanted to do to her and he almost had her under the covers with him when her cell phone suddenly rang.

"That has to be Alex!" She squealed immediately breaking free of his grasp by pushing him off her and rolling out of the bed to answer her phone leaving Tim cold, agitated, and lonely on the mattress.

Sam swayed her hips a little extra on purpose just to annoy him as she made her way to her phone which had been left on the vanity.

"Guess who's gonna be eating his words in like three seconds!" She teased once she'd confirmed that it was indeed Alex's call that was incoming.

Scam just rolled his eyes at her words as he slumped against the headboard and cupped a hand to his mouth as he called out to her loudly. "If Daiten actually proposed to her, I'll shave my head!"

Sam didn't pick up just yet as she looked at her husband who was that confident about his assessment of Daiten that he was betting his precious hair on it.

"Timmmm," she purred giving him a warning look as he sat there. "If I had any confidence whatsoever that you could pull off being bald then I'd totally hold you to that!"

Scam huffed and Sam giggled at his sour face before finally hitting the answer key and putting the phone up against her ear.

"Hey Alex! So how was the weekend? Oh my God you have to give me all the details about the proposal! Did he get down on one knee? Did he cry? Was it as romantic as you thought it'd be?" Sam kept excitedly firing questions at her only to stop some seconds later when she realized Alex wasn't answering her.

"Alex?" She repeated now worried and that worry only grew when she heard the sound of muffled sobs coming from the other end. Sam's eyes went wide as her heart dropped and she turned her head to look back at Tim.

"Tim…" She whispered, giving him a scared look and immediately he frowned knowing that something was wrong.

One hour later they were at Alex's place. They'd picked up Clover along the way and now both she and Sam sat with their arms around Alex while she sniffled and told them how Daiten had broken up with her right after their romantic weekend together had come to an end.

"I-I just …" Alex choked on a sob as Sam rubbed her back. "I don't get? Why'd he take me away for the weekend if he just … he just wanted to br-break up with me? Was it supposed to be a nice way for him to let me go? Did he th-think it would hurt less?"

Covering her face with her hands she felt another burst of fresh tears coming as she relayed the details of her mini-cation with Daiten. He hadn't given her any indication he wanted to dump her at the start of their getaway. No he'd been as passionate and romantic as ever. She'd lost count of the amount of times they'd made love to each other over the last two days. It didn't make any sense for him to leave her right after that!

Standing off to the side Scam had to bite his cheek hard not to say anything because he knew exactly why Daiten had taken Alex away. It hadn't been to propose to her, nor had it been for spending quality time with his girlfriend over Valentine's like a thoughtful boyfriend might. No Daiten had taken her there for one thing and one thing alone. For one final, roll in the hay before he had to let her go.

He'd gotten what he'd wanted, used her to his heart's content and then he'd dumped her just as he'd intended to most likely from the precise second that Alex had told him she wanted to marry him because he was never as serious about her as she had been about him… just as he'd suspected.

But he kept his mouth shut not wanting to say that that because it would hurt her to know just what a scumbag the man she thought was the love of her life was. He couldn't help but be disgusted and feel vindicated in his gut feeling about the man in question. If Daiten had any integrity he would have been mature, sat Alex down the second she started dreaming about having him as a husband and told her one of two things.

One, that he wasn't ready yet and needed more time or two, he couldn't see himself ever marrying her period. He'd done neither and instead played along months later just to procure more sex out a girl that he knew wanted so much more, wanted a real relationship from him and then cut all ties when he was finished.

And it bothered him know that Alex or any woman would shed tears over such a pig. Yet he stayed quiet letting Sam and Clover try to reason with her that she should forget about Daiten.

But when he heard Alex sound so sorry, so guilty as she said that she'd scared Daiten away by mentioning she wanted to marry him one day he couldn't take it anymore and found himself breaking his long silence.

"He's a man not a mouse!" Scam hissed pulling all three girls attention to him as he slowly began to walk closer to where they sat, face angered and frowning deeply in disbelief that any of them thought this was okay to let Daiten off the hook with.

"He shouldn't have been scared away by the knowledge that his girlfriend of almost a fucking year could see herself marrying him some day, he should have been thrilled! To know that a woman can stand you enough to want to spend the rest of her life with you is an honour NOT a punishment! Daiten should have been grateful! Don't make excuses for him!"

Easily seeing how he was fuming Sam stood up and stopped him from getting any closer to Alex.

"Tim…" She started warningly as she placed her hands against his chest to hold him back. "I know you mean well darling…" Sam said knowing he wasn't intending to come off as scolding towards Alex as he was sounding right now. Tim was a tough love kind of guy and didn't candy coat anything but the last thing Alex needed right now was to be told harsh truths. She was already upset enough.

"But right now, Alex doesn't need to hear-"

But she was left surprised when Alex cut her off mumbling that she wanted to hear his perspective. All eyes went to the raven-haired girl who sat there with puffy eyes and soggy cheeks as she looked at Tim almost hopefully because he was the only one who didn't look miserable for her at the news that Daiten had ended it with her and she wanted to know why.

Taking her cue Sam stepped aside and Tim took her place on the couch next to Alex and started talking to her. "You shouldn't waste tears on … Daiten," he spit out his name sounding like he wanted to strangle him before he went on. "You deserve better. So much better than a coward like him."

Alex stared at Scam for a long moment giving him the impression that he was getting through but then another tear split from her amber eye and she sighed staring down into her lap.

And Scam couldn't help but feel terrible for her despite how much he'd sensed that this situation was going to unfold one day because she'd put her faith in a man that didn't deserve to have it and thus set herself up for heartbreak. But still it was easy to see that she'd fallen for him hard and was now suffering immensely for it.

He didn't say anything more for a moment and just offered her the silent support she clearly needed. Patiently he held out his hand to her for her to hold and slowly Alex took it and clutched onto it tightly as she cried her eyes out for a while as if trying to get it out of her system before she gave him a small nod.

"You're probably right Tim," she whispered her voice shaking from hurt as she now recalled everything that her brain had so sadly ignored in the past. All the red flags that Daiten had set off.

She was always the one setting up their dates, asking him see him, making sure to call him, telling him she loved him. She should have known right away when he'd made this plan for them out of the blue that something was up.

But her moment of illumination faded away as her sorrow took over again. "I just … I dunno," she mumbled not knowing if she should say this because her friends may look down on her for it.

Feeling the man holding her hand give it a little squeeze in such an encouraging way as if asking her to please just say it she sighed and finally did. "All my life all, I've ever had were passing boyfriends. Some for a few days, some a week, at most a month. I just … I just wanted a serious relationship for once."

Her head moved up to look at Clover who stood next to Sam and she sighed while looking at them both. While she was beyond happy for her two best friends in the world for finding their true loves she also couldn't help but be envious and just a little bit jealous.

Especially of Sam that had scored a guy like Tim who loved her like a madman and had already married her. Sam hadn't had to twist his arm to get a proposal out him. No he'd happily done that on his own and proudly made her his wife.

"I just…" she bit her lip and frowned feeling pathetic. "I Just wanted to have what you and Sammie have," she finally confessed leaving Scam's eyes to widen.

He didn't say anything right away and so Alex let out a bitter, little laugh and shook her head. "Keep dreaming, right Alex?" She mocked herself for even thinking she'd ever have that for herself before she looked right at Sam while her lips quivered.

"I hope you know how lucky you are to have him," she said cocking her head towards Tim before she finally let go of his hand and got up. She started walking to her bedroom deciding that sleeping off her heartbreak was the best option only to stop at Scam's next words.

"Sam's not lucky to have me Alex…" she heard him say firmly, unwaveringly from behind her. "I'm the one who is lucky to have her."

Alex remained silent as he came over to where she was and placed his hands on her small shoulders to make her meet eyes with him. He gave her a kind smile when he had her attention again. "And when you find the right guy, he's going to say the exact same words. That he's the one who is blessed to have you in his life and not vice versa."

Feeling how she was staring at him now he went on knowing he had to be the one to say this to her. "Because he will be blessed to have someone so kind, and cheerful, and loyal…" He said listing off her virtues and qualities that everyone was well aware of and she was forgetting her in her moment of unfair self-loathing.

"And when the man you're actually meant to be with comes along, when you tell him that you could see yourself marrying him one day … he won't run away like Daiten did. No," He assured her raising her chin. "He'll get down on one knee and beg you to marry him."

Seeing doubt flicker in Alex's eyes at his words he sighed before consulting his wife who was quietly listening to everything he'd been saying to her best friend.

"Sam!" He called her name for her to back him up here. "Have I ever been wrong?"

Alex watched as Sam smiled and shook her head at her that no, he'd never ever been wrong.

"See?" Scam shrugged arrogantly and finally, at long last Alex felt her lips breaking into a small smile unable to help it.

"Thanks Tim," She mumbled as she hugged him, her tears finally stopping from falling.

He held her for a long moment before leaning her back and asking her gently. "So are we feeling better?"

"Yea," Alex nodded still smiling and feeling grateful that Sam had decided to bring Tim with her when she came. Sighs of relief went around the room before Alex said something more in a very quiet, very timid sounding voice.

"I just … wish for one thing."

"What?" Scam asked her leaving her to sigh as she mumbled. "I just wish I had a big brother to punch Daiten that's all."

A chuckle left Scam's lips as he once again had to remind her of something she was forgetting. "Alex, you're a super spy. You can kick Daiten's ass on your own." After all the guy was just a lowly beginner spy and had just been an agent for a year tops. Alex vastly outranked him both in title and fighting skill.

Alex nodded her head and fidgeted a little with her hands as she sighed. "I know that but it's just sweet when someone else does it for you, ya know? Defends your honour like that and takes … revenge for you."

She then gave him this look and instantly he knew what she was asking for from him. And honestly? He was more than happy to do it so he returned that look of hers with a nod and a little smirk as if to say that it was taken care of.

Something that only Alex saw.

And two things happened the very next day. Alex bumped into Darren, one of the men working in the Weapons Department that Tim headed and Daiten Jones turned up to WOOHP with a massive black eye and having no recollection whatsoever of how he'd gotten it.

I hope that was cute? I was going for cute xD
