The Baby Talk
Sam stood in the bedroom before the floor-length mirror. It had been a few hours since she'd returned home from her two-day trip to attend her cousin sister's baby shower (1) yet it was all that she could think of. It wasn't just because she'd met her new baby nephew there (Jackson who was a total cutie pie), it was because of something else... a discussion that had taken place while she'd been there.
Being the only married but young woman that had been at that party, somehow the topic of her one day being a mother had been brought up. The guests, many of which had been other members of her family had put her on the spot:
She wanted kids right?
Could she tell them any potential names she had picked out already?
When did she and Tim plan to become parents? Was it going to be soon?
Had she and he at least talked about it yet?
While she'd answered their queries with a red face and a simple reminder that her and her husband had only been married a short while, implying that it was much too soon for them to become mom and dad and that had been enough to drop that conversation then, later when she'd been laying in the huge bed that had been made available for Clover, Alex, and her to share while staying over, it had come up again.
"That baby is gonna be a super baby," Clover had declared as if there was no question about it. "With all of your smarts and Tim's smarts? He'll definitely grow up to top any and all schools he goes to, invent a cure for a deadly disease or two, and win a Nobel Peace Prize."
"Yea! But can you imagine how cute she'd be?" Alex had squealed, instead envisioning them to have themselves a girl. "With Sammie's red hair, a blend of their complexions, and Tim's sea foam eyes? Ahhhh she'll be the most photogenic baby ever!"
"You know what I find surprising?" She still remembered the evil smirk on Clover's lips as she'd said that. "That Sammie here is not already pregnant seeing that Tim and her have probably had sex like a million times by now! I mean they do do it literally every chance they get; Sammie must be on a hell of birth control pill."
"Cut it out you guys!" She'd cried embarrassed at her and Tim's private and very much intimate matter being casual gossip like this. But even when they'd finally taken the hint and stopped, when she fell asleep that night she'd dreamt about it. A baby that was half hers and half her beloved husband's. And the child in her dreams? That little baby had been precious beyond description.
A small, dreamy sigh left her lips as she glanced at her stomach in the mirror's reflection which in her dream had been puffy still being a Postpartum tummy but was totally flat right now. She touched it, her palm roaming over it slowly and feeling the abs found there before she bit her lip and slowly pushed it out by arching her back.
Not getting the result she was trying to, she went over to the bed and grabbed a pillow off of it. Going back to the mirror she lifted up her peach, silk slip and slid the pillow right about where her tummy was before pulling her dress back down over it.
She smiled, looking at herself looking so pregnant and being so caught up in her little simulation that she never noticed her husband walk into the bedroom just then.
"...What are you doing?" She heard him ask curious, and gasped immediately jumping around to face him. Tim stood there before her having returned from his nightly shower, his hair damp and wearing nothing more than a black towel around his waist. Normally she'd be ogling at his incredible body but right now, all she could look at was his eyes.
And she gulped when they landed smack dab on her stomach.
"I-I was just ... uh," she gulped while frantically trying to remove the pillow from under her dress but it wouldn't budge for some reason. "I was um ... just ... just..."
The sound of lace ripping soon filled the awkward silence and Sam wanted to die on the spot when she realized she'd torn her clothing in all her desperate tugging. With the pillow still stuck to her stomach she covered her face with both her hands too embarrassed to face her husband.
That did not just happen. It did not, she tried telling herself despite seeing Tim still from in between the gaps of her fingers confirming that it indeed had. And she didn't know what to make of his expression. It was half surprised and half ... amused.
"Oh no, what's he thinking?!" She asked herself too afraid to open her mouth and actually ask him. "We just got married and I'm already fantasizing about a baby! He's definitely freaking out on the inside!"
She figured he was because most guys tended to when it came to the prospect of fatherhood especially when their significant other was going around behind their back daydreaming about it like this without even saying anything about it to them first.
But she didn't want a baby now! She was just thinking about the time she would have one! Eventually, that was all!
Fidgeting and squirming from shame, Sam wondered if she should just run out of the room because she felt so silly and didn't know how to explain this to him. Maybe if she just locked herself in the bathroom, by the time she came out tomorrow morning he'd have forgotten about it!
Just about to make her attempted escape, Sam began to break into a sprint when Tim finally said something.
"... Were you trying to see how you would look if you were pregnant or somethin'?"
Sam's breath caught in her throat with a sharp hitch and she stopped dead in her tracks. Oh no he'd figured it out! What was she gonna do now? How was she going to talk her way out of this?!
Chewing on her lip hard from her nervousness Sam gulped again before giving him a little nod because she knew he was waiting for an answer. Dead silence followed her admission of guilt and not knowing what else to do she found herself stuttering out a medley of sincere apologies to him.
"I ... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry! I shouldn't have ... I should never have—"
"Sam—"
"I-I dunno what I was thinking! Tim I'm sor—"
He finally silenced her by walking over and coolly placing his index finger against her mouth. "Ssshh," he hushed her, urging her to please calm down. When Sam finally started breathing somewhat normally he reached for the pillow which had now scooted down midway between her hip and thigh and pulled it out for her. Tossing it away he took her hand in his and quietly walked her over to the dresser.
Sifting through it, he looked for another one of her nightdresses for her to wear. Soon handing her one he remained silent as Sam shakily changed into it and dropped the ripped one on the carpet. When she was done she tried talking again but once more he shushed her as he lead her to their bed and made her sit down on it.
He then left the room, disappearing down the hall for a minute before returning with a glass of water. Sitting next to her on the mattress he offered her the glass and when she shook her head no and just stared at the floor still hyperventilating he turned her face towards him, brought the glass up to her mouth and made her gulp it down.
When she finished all of the water he set the empty glass on the bedside table before holding her hand again, massaging her knuckles in soothing circles with his thumb as he very softly, very patiently spoke to her.
"Why were you saying sorry to me Sammie?"
"... Isn't it obvious?" Sam breathed out a moment later still not able to look at his face because she felt so ridiculous still. With her eyes glued to his knee she mumbled, "We've been married for what? Like one month and I was thinking of a baby. Our ... baby."
"... And?" She heard him say, his tone of voice making it sound like it hadn't been a big deal when it had been just that.
Taking in a deep breath Sam said what she had to before taking her gaze off him entirely and looking back at the floor. "It's ... too soon."
Now knowing what her issue was Tim nodded his head before letting go of her hand. He stood up and walked away leaving Sam in wonder as to where he was going now.
Straining her hearing she counted his footsteps and realized he'd gone into his parents' old bedroom for some reason; a room he rarely went into wanting to preserve it as they'd left it. Soon enough he returned to the bedroom with something held behind his back.
"I have something to show you," he said to her as he approached. When he reached her he handed her the mystery object. It was one of his old t-shirts and she couldn't figure out what about it he wanted her to see and why.
Noting her staring at him in a lost way he just nodded his head towards her telling her to take it from him and slowly she did.
It was only when she was holding it in her own hands did she realize the shirt was being used as a cover to hide something else inside it. Whatever it was concealing, it was ... small.
Slowly unwrapping the makeshift envelope, Sam was surprised when another article of clothing tumbled out of it. And when she picked it up and got a good look at it her mouth parted at what she was now seeing.
It was a onesie.
A onesie which looked only about big enough to fit a newborn baby.
Her mouth still open she looked back at Tim who smiled as he explained her discovery. "I've had that for years. Long before we even met."
His eyes glazed over in thought as he remembered just when he'd found this. It had been one day while he'd been on the run. He'd ducked into a children's clothing store knowing that was the last place on earth WOOHP would think to look for him. Attempting to blend in, he'd started sifting through a rack of baby clothes and it had immediately caught his eye. To this day he remembered the thoughts that had buzzed inside his own mind as he made his way towards the cashier with it in his hand.
He was wasting his money. When was he ever going to have a baby? Never. He'd never get the chance to be a father because he was a dangerous felon, a criminal whom no woman could even begin to love let alone love deeply enough to bear his child. But he'd gotten it regardless and hidden it away in case despite all odds, that fateful day still somehow came for him.
"Long before I even thought I'd ever be a father," Scam stated and Sam's eyes widened as she understood now why he'd shown her this. A small smile pulled at her lips as she realized that he'd done it too. Just like her he'd imagined himself becoming a parent and having a baby way before he was actually planning to.
Feeling better about this whole incident now she let out a deep breath of relief before glancing once more at the baby clothing in her hands.
"This is so cute..." She whispered as she studied the onesie unable to get over how adorable it was. It was bright orange just like the colour of a typical jail tracksuit, had a pattern reminiscent of a prison cell's bars on it along with the words I just did 9 months on the inside written across it in bold, black print. Knowing him as well as she did, Sam could tell that Tim had liked it because it was a clever and hilarious reference to the fact that he'd once been a prisoner.
And running her fingertips over the garment her smile turned into a grin at the thought of their baby wearing it one day.
Seeing the joy on her face and knowing that he'd made his point that it was perfectly okay for her to think about their future child already, Tim sat down next to her on the bed again, pulling her into his lap and holding her snugly against his body. "You think so huh?"
"Mmhmm," Sam mumbled in reply, adjusting herself in his embrace so that her head was laying cozily against his broad shoulder. She said nothing more for a long moment just breathing him in and smiling to herself. But soon she wondered if she should just ask him the question that was on her mind now. She hesitated but only for a minute since Tim was just fine discussing this kind of thing and she decided to just go for it.
"Tim?" She murmured his name as she began doodling on his bare chest affectionately.
"Hmm?" He said back as he played with her long hair and kissed her forehead tenderly.
"Ever think about what you'd want to have? A daughter or a son?"
His face became reflective for a moment before he spoke. "Honestly? The gender wouldn't matter to me; I'd be happy with whatever we end up with. But I guess it would be cool to have a little girl seeing we've only had boys in my family for as far back as I can remember."
Suddenly he smirked, an evil little smirk as he added, "Also I'd have a hell of a good time intimidating any future boyfriend of hers."
Sam found herself erupting into a fit of giggles at that, already feeling bad for that poor boy who would have to deal with Tim Scam and that too while he was on Papa Bear mode.
Planting a quick kiss into her husband's neck, she moved to get off of him but he stopped her by tightening his grip on her and asking her her own question.
"What about you Sammie? What would you want? Boy or girl?"
She blushed softly before whispering that she actually knew just what she'd want.
"Really?" Tim grinned now intrigued as he asked her to tell him what it was.
Sam stared at his handsome face, her heart thumping hard inside the confines of her chest as she felt herself drowning into the deep depths of the oceans of his sea foam eyes. There was no way she could want anything else but a splitting image of the love of her life, of him. A gorgeous baby son with his dark chestnut locks, olive skin, mesmerizing eyes, and hopefully a replica of that infamously maddening smirk of his.
"I want..." She licked her lips blushing harder before she answered him at last. "I want a baby boy ... a mini Tim Scam."
Tim's eyebrows rose at her reply and he had to stop himself from grinning so hard that his face cracked in half because it spoke volumes about her feelings for him.
"You ... want another me?" He confirmed and when she nodded yes he let out a mock sigh. "Oh I dunno Sammie," he warned her, tsking away. "He'd be a handful. I'm not so sure that you're ready for a second Tim Scam."
But Sam just pouted and poked her nose into his. "Hey! If I can handle dad then I can handle son!" She said determined, making it clear to him that her mind was made up on this and she would not be swayed. Whenever they would decide to make a baby, she would be hoping he'd be a boy.
Tilting his head to the side Tim gave Sam an innocent look, masking his intentions as he candidly stated, "Now whoever said that you could handle dad?"
With that he made her squeal as he tossed her down on the mattress and pinned her against the covers with the weight of his body. Ignoring her demands for him to unhand her he just kissed her for several minutes until she was dizzy before sitting up in the bed.
"Sooo ..." He smirked, his hands sneakily moving to his towel and starting to loosen it from around his waist as he kept his gaze locked with Sam's as she lay there panting hard to catch her breath.
"Wanna try to conceive Tim Scam junior now? I'm more than ready babe," he winked mischievously as he dropped the towel then, revealing his manhood to her which was also ready to go.
Sam gasped, her eyes popping wide and blushing so red and hot that her face almost melted off as she squeaked and backed up on the mattress until her back hit the headboard with a loud thud.
Throwing his head back and laughing at her startled expression until his stomach ached, he finally took mercy on her as he put the towel back on and rose from the bed to go change into some actual clothes.
"Alright, maybe later then," he drawled out, still chuckling as he shook his head to himself in amusement before heading towards the dresser.
And while he dressed himself Sam watched him, unable to look away or stop smiling for even one, brief second as she could only think one thing.
Whatever their future baby ended up being, whenever he or she ended up coming into the world, she just hoped for one thing.
That they'd be like Tim.
Just like her Tim.
