Chapter 1; Reality

"Sousuke? Sousuke?" Kaname waved her hand in front of my face to gain my attention. She seemed excited and impatient. Somehow I got lost in my thoughts.

Before I could even respond she grapped my arm and pulled me in her direction. "Come on Sousuke, you should definitely see this!"

I could see the smile on her face and the sparkle in her eyes. This sparkle often showed when she planned something for me to explore this 'new world' I got into.

It had been a sunny afternoon in spring and we went to the park. The cherryblossoms were in full bloom and the fields were filled with all kinds of flowers.

"This is amazing, don't you think so?" I nod.

She pointed at a rippling stream and we started following the path it flowed through the field. Reaching the end of the brook, it seemed to flow into a small lake. It had all kinds of deciduous trees at one side and peaceful rural areas at the other. The sunlight lined the trees, the colors almost to bright for anyone to take in.

We both stared in utter disbelieve. It was stunning.

After a minute Kaname broke our silence. "Wouldnt this be an amazing fishing spot Sousuke?" It definitely would be. Too bad we didnt bring any fishinggear.

Suddenly the mood changes. Her smile dissapeared and made room for concern.

She just stares at me, tears starting to well up in her eyes. "Sousuke?"

As much as I want to say something, I just dont know what to tell her. How to respond to this overwhelming feeling of.. of.. I don't even know how to call this what I am feeling.

When the tears start to roll down her cheeks I feel panic rising. What is going on?

"Why aren't you saying anything? Did I say something wrong?" She whimpers.

Yeah, what is it I am not responding to her? I've got no clue. I should reassure her immediately.

Auw! What is this? A piercing pain makes my hand move to my chest, directly above my heart. I'm trying to speak but I can't breath. My mouth is open but no words come out. What the hell is going on?

"Please. I.. I don't want to lose you!" Her crying intensifies.

Out of nowhere someone is starting to pull me away from her. The world around me is starting to fade into a bright light and Chidori is getting smaller and smaller. I'm trying to scream, to fight against the force I'm feeling to stay with her. But the pain is overwhelming.

She is almost out of my sight. But I can hear her say "Farewell, Sousuke Sagara."

"So, basically the pH scale ranges from 0 – 14. When a solvant is pH 7, it is neutral, like tapwater."

Kaname loves this subject. She always liked chemistry, it just made sense to her.

Although being a whispered made it really boring to be in this class. High school chemistry had never been a challenge to her.

She dozed off. Looking at his desk. Sousukes empty desk. She realized he had been away for almost a week now.

Thankfully this time she got him to sent her at least 1 textmessage a day. Even though it always said the same.

'No particularities to report.'

Well, okay, she did hope for something like: 'Hey, how are you doing today? No problems over here. I miss you!' but she knew that wasnt gonna happen anytime soon.

"As you may see here, caustic soda has a pH of 13, which makes it a strong alkali." The teacher continued. He showed a chart of the pH scale and pointed out were to find the compound.

Thinking about what had happened last few months and how it changed her life, positive and negative, she noticed how much impact his arrival had made. He hadn't been here for that long and still she couldnt even remember her life before she met him.

Suddenly a shadow interupted her thoughts. She wasnt paying any attention in class right now and the teacher noticed. So he walked up to her desk and she didnt even notice until he was right in front of her. She quickly turned towards him.

"Chidori-san." He said with a strict tone. "I guess you already know the answer to my question since you dont seem to feel the urge to pay attention to my lecture?"

"Yes, I'm sorry." She quickly tried to figure out what was being asked. The chalkboard had been scribbled with a variety of questions that were most likely being asked in the next test.

Suddenly she saw Kawamura Masao waving behind the teacher. The newest addition to their class lifted three fingers, letting her know which question they were currently dealing with.

"The answer should be.."

The schoolbell rang. Not a second too soon.

"Saved by the bell Chidori-san." The teacher walked back to his desk while the students packed their belongings. "Don't forget next weeks test. I trust all of you will prepare for excellent grades." He packed his things as well. While packing he added without looking at her "Especially you, Chidori Kaname."

Kaname let out a sigh of relief. Thankfully this class was over.

She arranged her books, but before packing them she took out her phone, checking for any new messages from a certain sergeant. But there were none. Instead she texted him.

Any idea when you will be back? We've got a test next week. Chemistry. It's a lot so if you need my help... Let me know?

"That was a close call Chidori-san." Masao said when he walked by. "Yeah, I know. Thanks for your help." Kaname said, smiling.

"Sure, no problem." Masao said. "You seemed to have a lot on your mind today. Is everything OK?" He asked curiously.

Kaname had been feeling lonely for a few days. Kyoko took part in a cultural exchange and left two weeks prior. Of course she knew the rest of the students, but without Sousuke and Kyoko at school she felt like it took more energy taking classes. Which could explain her dozing of in almost every class today.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine. Just a little tired, that's all." She said.

Her phone started to vibrated. When she looked at the caller ID she excused herself from Masao and took the call.

"Hey, I wasnt expecting your call. Do you know when you will you be back?"

No response, just some background noise.

She lifted the phone from her ear and checked the connection, which was perfectly fine.

"Hello? Sousuke?" She asked.

"Kaname?" A womans voice came through.

"Melissa?"

The typical sound of a flatlining heart monitor pierced everybodies ears. "His heart stopped. Prepare to shock him."

A nurse charged the machine and handed the paddles to the leading doctor.

Sousuke Sagara just got rolled into the OR where he made all the medics get to work immediately. He lost lots of blood, hence the different bloodbags already connected to his body. Even though the medics in the field got to him in time, it was clear from the beginning he needed to get to the hospital ASAP.

"Clear!"

All personell took a step back when the doctor shocked Sousuke. His chest lifted into the air.

The portable heart monitor kept on flatlining. A nurse manually doublechecked his pulse in the neck. "No pulse."

"I'm trying again. Charging" Even though they had to wait a few seconds for the machine to power back up, nobody stood still. Preparations for surgery continued. Only the leading doctor stood there staring at the machine to wait for the signal he could shock again.

"Clear!" His chest lifted into the air.

The alarming sound continued. "Still no pulse sir." the nurse mentioned.

"Adminster the adrenaline. Turn up the machine." The doctor ordered. The joules got turned up, and while they administered the adrenaline the monitor kept on giving warnings (like they wouldnt already know something was wrong).

"Clear!"

Finally the beeping sound returned and they knew his heart was re-activated. But they werent finished yet.

"We've got a pulse. Disconnecting the portable monitor and connecting his vitals to our machines."

Within a few seconds Sousuke got hooked up to all necessary hospital devices. Even though his heart restarted, he still suffered the consequences of severe bloodloss and internal bleedings.

"His bloodpressure is too low! We dont have much time. He needs another bag of blood and we need to find those internal bleedings!"
