Totomaru's Morning

The sun was barely coming up when Totomaru open his eyes, the near-pitch darkness of his room being a clear indicator of that.

But nevertheless, the noise he was hearing was definitely real.

Mind numbing real.

Just outside the window to his room on the third story of the building, which led out to the school's courtyard, he could hear the sound of heavy grunts, blows being landed on flesh, lightning crackling, and the occasional sound of a tree breaking.

All and all, noises that painfully reminded him of his childhood.

Slowly, he turns his head to look at the clock by his bed stand, the two hands indicating that it was barely past three in the morning.

"I have three hours before I have to get up", the fire mage mumbles aloud as he rose from his bed and threw on a pair of pants. Despite what most people who never met him would think, Totomaru was always above the common stereotype that was affiliated with fire mages in the aspect that they wore limited clothing even in the colder months of the year with Macao Conbolt probably being the only fire mage he knew of that wore more clothing than him. He had to consider that a number of parents in the surrounding area sent their kids to his school and thus he usually dressed modestly whenever he venture out into town or when classes were being held.

But seeing how it was so early in the morning and that it was the holidays he felt like he didn't have to worried about anyone important being at his school. Walking through the halls, the guild mage turn headmaster made his way outside where he comes across quite a scene.

Kori and Evlan were out by one edge of the courtyard, assuming what seem to be a mediation pose with their legs cross while their arms were stretched out to the sides and small droplets of ice hovered among their hands, moving in a circular formation. With their eyes close and seeming engross in their own world, Totomaru turn his attention to the main source of his irritation who were on the other side of the courtyard.

Embroiled in an intense training duel, Juri was on the backfoot as Lei press her at every turn; forcing the student to stay on her toes in over to just avoid the electrifying punches and kicks that were being thrown at her.

"Wait a minute, wasn't she hurt yesterday?" Totomaru thought, clearly recalling the girl getting bandages up by Evlan after her bout with Wendy. But before his thoughts could delve any further, the sounds of Lei bellowing out critiques snap him back to the real world.

"You're left guard is not as strong as it should be and you are constantly needing to regain your balance!", the Rainbow Lightning teacher yells as she moves to sweep out Juri's legs to which the girl barely manages to evade, "Perhaps I need to double your afternoon training regiment!"

Juri didn't response but instead began focusing her magic and as arcs of lightning began to dance along her body, she pulls one of her right arm back, the hand in an open palm position.

A sense of nostalgia washes over Totomaru as he watches of all the lightning begin to converge onto a singular point in the middle of Juri's palm and seem to grow with each passing second until it was the size of a beach ball. She aims it directly at her teacher who only stood there with her arms cross in an almost nonchalant posture.

"Thunder Ball!", she shouts and hurl the spell ball forward at an alarming speed directly at her teacher who still opted to remain still as the spell got closer and closer.

"Right...about...now", Totomaru tells himself and if on cue, Lei spun around and her right foot made contact with the ball, sending it flying back at Juri who only barely manages to duck down in time to avoid it. The ball crashes into the forest near the school, creating a deafening sound, along with a decent crater, in the process.

"That particular spell is lacking in power, Juri! For that, you will be devoting an extra hour today to spell focusing!", Lei declares before sensing a presence behind her and an unamused voice start to speak.

"You know, normal people are asleep around this time."

Lei could only smirk as she turns around to face her fellow pupil, "Well, normal people are weak because of that", she retorts and a silence fell upon the two as the Rainbow Fire master watches his lightning counterpart regard him with a look that he couldn't quite place a finger on but it was someone between the borders of surprise and curiosity. It was only after staring at her for a moment did he realize that her eyes were quickly flickering every now and then toward his uncovered torso before returning back to staring at his head. If he didn't have years of experience in keep tracking of fast moving object and people, he more than likely would have never noticed it.

Now while Totomaru himself never thought he was muscles bound like Laxus or Elfman down in Fairy Tail, he was still in a great shape despite his profession. If he had to compare himself to someone, it would probably be his former Phantom Lord comrade, Gajeel, only he didn't show off nowhere near the same amount of skin that he did. Nevertheless, he was never self-conscious about his body but the way Lei was looking at him made him almost wish he would had taken a few extra seconds to throw a shirt on before coming outside.

"Are you not cold, Master Totomaru?", a voice snaps him out of his thoughts and he turns to Evlan standing behind him with a quizzical look on her face.

"I beg your pardon?", he says.

"I ask if you were cold, Master Totomaru?", Evlan repeated.

"They're still going with that whole "master" bit.. Guess Kori and Lei were seriously about treating me with respect", Totomaru thought before speaking, "You do realize that as a fire mage I can regulate my body heat to stay warm, right?"

The tilting of her head was a clear sign that such knowledge was not known to her.

"Fire mages were a rarity in Iceberg, so I was not aware of this", she says, prompting Totomaru to throw a hard look at Kori, but it dissipates upon him seeing that she was doing the same thing with her eyes that Lei had been doing.

"The hell is going on with those two?", Totomaru thought turning his attention to Juri who was coming up behind Evlan, "Am I to assume that you also didn't know that little fact about fire mages?"

Juri merely shrugs, "Lightning mages dominate the land of Seven, so yeah I didn't know much about them."

Totomaru takes a deep breath, "I...see. Pardon me while I go change. When I return I wish to talk to your respective masters in my office...alone."

Evlan and Juri each don a baffling expression on their faces but say nothing as the Rainbow Fire mage stomps past the teenage girls and back into his school, leaving them behind with their still quiet teachers.

A few minutes later, Totomaru fully dressed and sitting at his desk in the Headmaster's office with Kori and Lei sitting down in two of the chairs in front of him which were usually reserved for students, parents, teachers, or a combination of all three. The lightning mage was slouch in her chair, her left arm dangling over the back of it while her legs were spread open while her ice magic counterpart was sitting promptly upright, with a straight back and her hands neatly folded in her lap.

Meanwhile Totomaru was assuming the position he usually assumed whenever he was about to lectured an unruly student. He was lean over, his elbows place firmly on the wooden surface of his desk while his fingers were interlocked directly in front of his face.

The trio all sat in a three-way staring contest, each one refusing to yield to their counterparts. It was a contest that the three have had many times with each other during their youth in their travels with Master Yoso and one that usually ended in an intense verbal argument… and the occasional bout of physical violence.

"You have been traveling with these girls for over ten years and yet neither one of them were aware of one of the most basic facts regarding one of the more common mages", Totomaru finally spoke.

"You say it like it is some sort problem", Lei says.

SLAM!

The whole room reverberate with the sound of Totomaru pounding his fists on his desk, standing up in the process. Neither one of the others Rainbow magic practitioners were faze by this in the slightest though.

"It is a very big problem seeing how you both have been denying the mages under you care a basic magical education and I have half a mind as a teacher to report you to the proper authorities!", Totomaru shouts.

"The laws of Fiore do not apply to us seeing how we are merely passing through and are not its citizens", Kori states, making Totomaru direct his fury those her.

"Excuse me?!", he shouts.

"I became well-verse in the laws of this country before coming here and it clearly states that we have to be within the country's borders for a six months before certain laws, including educational, apply to us", the ice mage explain before presenting a passport. The date that was stamp on it showed that Kori, and no doubt Evlan, enter Crocus little over a week ago, "Your country has a number of laws that most other countries do not have but give a large amount of leeway in enforcing them."

"Yeah, that goes for me to", Lei spoke up as she too presented a passport that was in the same fashion as Kori, "Besides, we teach our students want they need to know. To read, write, to live off the land, basic first aid, and such. Everything else is trivia and a waste of time.

"Are you serious?", Totomaru questions, "Going off yesterday, your student only seems to know how to start fights and cause massive amounts of damage", he spoke before a thought occur in his head, "Which means you would fit in perfectly at Fairy Tail but that's neither here nor there."

"The strong prevail over the weak. Its the most basic law of nature", Lei counters, "No matter what degree or title you have, eventually everything devolves down to the strong taking what they want and the weak being cast aside."

"While we are on the subject; do you mind explaining to me why exactly your student is doing intense combat training when she should be resting to recuperate the injuries she received yesterday?!", Totomaru questions.

"Oh please, Juri isn't some fragile little fairy who needs to see a doctor every time she gets a scratch on her arm. I've been training her to be tougher than that", Lei proudly declares.

Totomaru lets out a groan and rubs the bridge of his nose, trying to ward off the headache that was beginning to form. He has been teaching for too long and this act of sacrilegious against education, and proper health care, was starting getting to him more than he let on.

"How did you two come across these girls?", he finally ask after a moment, ignoring the sound of ice and lightning spells being cast outside his window.

"We found them in same place Master Yoso found us; in the orphanages scattered throughout Ishgar", Kori answers.

"Of course you did. No self-respecting parents would dare hand their kids over to you two for training", Totomaru says, causing both women to throw heated glares at him.

"This will be your first and only warning; do not question my ways of teaching. Belittle Lei's methods if you must, but for your own safety, hold your tongue when it comes to mine", Kori threatens.

"What was that, Ice Bitch?", the lightning mage growls.

"Control yourself, Lei. We only have to tolerate each other's presences until master choses an heir", Kori says, ignoring the insult.

A smirk forms on Lei's lips, "You're right, I just have to put up with you two until then. Though I doubt it will take that long for Master Yoso to declare me his rightful heir. I say the end of this month at best."

In that brief moment of time, Totomaru forgot all about his anger in regards to his two peers not providing a good training environment to their students. In that brief moment of time, he was back at a campsite in the middle of some random forest in the countryside of some random country once more embroiled in an argument with a younger Kori and Lei while Master Yoso looked on with a chuckle as he made ready their food.

In the that brief moment, he was no longer Headmaster Totomaru but the young hot-headed fire mage who was always ready to get in a fight with his fellow trainees.

"I beg your pardon?", the ice mage spoke before he could say anything, "You truly believe in that inferior mind of yours that you will be chosen as the successor to Master Yoso?"

Lei scoffs, "Of course! While I'll admit that maybe, just maybe, you both can match me in a fight enough that Master Yoso can't tell the difference, Juri has both of your students beat by miles! There ain't no way she'll lose to those two weaklings of yours!"

Kori stands up abruptly, ice claws forming around all her fingers. Lei mirrors this action, arcing lightning off her bdoy and soon the two women were having a stand-off which mimic a blizzard and thunderstorm about to collide.

Not wanting to be sideline in his own office, or perhaps it was his body acting on instinct, Totomaru took up as well, grabbing his katana that was situated behind him. Upon drawing it and lighting it in red flames the former Phantom Lord mage faces off with his magical equals; not caring for a moment that his office would be utterly destroyed in a matter of seconds if not significant parts of his school as well.

But before a violent confrontation between the mages of fire, ice, and lightning could occur, a sound from outside catches all of their….or moreso it was a growl.

The trio rush to the nearest window that looked out into the courtyard and spot both Evlan and Juri….

Having yet another tense stand off with the local Sky Dragon-Slayer while Romeo was a few yards away watching in horror as the situation unfolded.

THE EVENTS THAT LED TO THIS

Romeo groans as made his way to his former school, intent on talking with Headmaster Totomaru about the specifics of his upcoming training. Back when he attended the it as a student, he would normally make this trip alone, only every now and then encountering another soul on his travels; but this time was entirely different.

"You know, it really wasn't necessary for you to come with me today", he says as he looks down at his right arm, his girlfriend's, or mate, arms wrap around it in a near vice-grip that threaten to cut off his blood circulation.

"I just want to finally see the school that you went to, that's all", Wendy replies as she looks up at him with puppy dog eyes, "Do you not like having me around?"

"That's a trap if I ever saw one", Romeo thought before speaking, "Of course I love having you around. I did say I would try and spend as much time with you as I could, didn't I?"

The squeal Wendy lets out echoes throughout the area, sending multiple flocks of birds that were in the nearby forest surging into the sky as the dragon-slayer then plants a kiss on the side of Romeo's cheek, slightly surprise him.

"Although…. ", he said after he recovered.

Wendy's good mood sours upon hearing that particular word, "Although what?"

Romeo takes a quick glance at Wendy's expression and briefly wonders whether or not he should continue with this conversation for his own sake. But since Fairy Tail mages were known for their recklessness, Romeo decides to push on.

"Although I was sure you had a job today with Natsu and the others...in Crocus", he started.

Wendy nervously scratches the back of her head while laughing, "Well, I felt like they wouldn't need me plus I'm kind of taking a break from jobs for the time being. You know, like a vacation."

….

…..

Wendy found herself slightly squirming under Romeo's stare, not use to be on the receiving end of such a look. A look that convey his thoughts and show the dragon-slayer that he was having a hard time believing her.

"You know, you still haven't explain why you were outside my house this morning when I left", Romeo then say.

"Oh, I just so happen to be passing through the neighborhood at that time", Wendy says.

"…..At almost five in the morning?", Romeo questions.

….

The couple decided that it was best to spend the rest of the walk in silence seeing how every time they talk it just made things ways more awkward for the both of them. Luckily, they both decided in their head that they were simply enjoying the quiet and each other's company, not discovering the flaws in their relationship.

Romeo use this time to mull the recent development of said relationship in his head.

"I recall Lucy, Levy, Cana, and Kinana all saying that their significant other display extremely bouts of jealous once their relationship went to the next step. Same with Yukino and Kagura if I remember correctly. Not while I doubt that Wendy is going to attack every girl who looks at me, it would still be in my best wishes to deflect any possibly of another girl trying to hit on me. I would hate to have a repeat of Lindsay", he thought while occasionally sparing glances down at Wendy who was still looking straight down the path while resting her head on his shoulders, "Shouldn't be too hard. Surely that Juri girl won't try something stupid like she did yesterday."

But in the back of Romeo's mind, he couldn't shake the feeling that while Wendy was respecting his wishes to patriciate in this trial to chose a successor for Grand Master Yoso, she still wasn't going to let him out of her sight if she could help it.

Anyway, as the two approach the school they were surprise to spot two figures standing in the courtyard.

Well, Romeo was surprise. Wendy on the other hand was slightly growling while tighten her grip round her mate's arm, seeing how with her enhance senses she already knew who the two were long before he did.

Juri and Evlan were standing across from one another, their stances indicating that Romeo and Wendy just happen upon what seem to be the start of a mages duel. The ice magic apprentice had claws forming around the fingers of her right hand much like the way her teacher did while Juri had lightning coursing over her body.

"You sure you want to do this?", Juri laughs, "I can't promise you won't come out of this without a few broken bones."

"Your attempts at bravado did not help you yesterday and they will not help you here", Evlan replies, causing Juri to sneer.

"Fine then, have it your way!", she shouts as she charges up her magic and stomps her right foot down on the ground in front of her, forming a miniature crater in the process, before launching herself forward like a cannon at Evlan.

"Thundering Rush!", she shouts as she readies herself to deliver a punch.

Evlan drops down and slaps her left hand on the ground in front of her.

"Ice-Make: Shield!", she shouts and a torment of ice erupts from the ground in front of her.

The barrier took the full burnt of Juri's powerful punch, sending cracks along its entire surface and even scattering bits of ice. Yet it still continue to hold out underneath the young mage's fury.

"She can use Ice-Make magic?", Romeo asks himself, " So she doesn't just used Rainbow Ice Magic. I wonder if Juri has any other magic as well."

A laugh from said lightning mage breaks Romeo out of his thoughts and he spots her readying herself for another attack. Despite the fact that she could have easily got around or even over the shield, she seem insisted on breaking through it directly, almost as if to prove her strength.

"Not bad, Evlan! But if you think this is enough to stop me, you're sadly mistaken!", she declares as red flames began to appear on the streams of lightning surrounding her body. Now with a mixture of red and yellow dancing along her skin, Juri reel her fist back and prepares to launch another punch.

"So she can use a mixture of fire and lightning too", Romeo observes before noticing something else, "Wait, how is she moving like that with the injuries she took yesterday?"

"Fiery Thunder Hammer!", she shouts as her throw her punch and it collides with the ice barrier, instantly destroying a substantial chuck of it but instead of attacking again Juri kept her fist in place in the hole it had created in the ice and through Wendy's superior eyesight, she could see the ice starting to melt around it, weakening the spell.

Evlan seem to pick up on this and leaps up in the air, vaulting over her own ice shield. With a grace that Romeo has only ever seen in the likes of the most dexterity mages of Fairy Tail, Evlan turns in mid-air with her head pointing toward the ground. She draws back her right hand, still encase in claws and flings it forward.

"Ice Spikes!", she shouts and hurls all five ice shards from her hand toward Juri.

In response, the girl lets loose a bolt of inferno lightning which takes out three of the shards while the other two stay on course. Juri manages to lean out of the way of the first one but the second leaves a gash on her right arm.

"Bastard!", she shouts out in pain just as Evlan lands on the ground, "I'll pay you back for that!",

The young ice mage makes herself ready to carry on with the fight only to notice two figures standing off to her left. When she briefly glances over to identify them she raises her hand up, notifying Juri to wait.

"It seems we have company", she merely says and Juri directs her attention over to where she was looking.

"Well if it ain't the Fire Pussy and the Windy Bitch!", Juri bellows as she dispels are fiery lightning, "Why the hell are you two weaklings here?"

Wendy and Romeo turn to look at each other, both of their mouths slightly open.

"Was she referring to us?", Wendy asks.

"I-I think so", Romeo answers before looking back at an approaching Juri and Evlan, "You do realize you lost yesterday, right?"

"Oh please, that was nothing more than a mere warm-up and I would've kick this bitch's ass if I wasn't holding back in order now to destory your precious little guild hall!", Juri scoffs while crossing her arms, "If you don't believe me, then we can have a rematch right here and now!"

Before Wendy could response, whether in an aggressive manner or a non-aggressive one, it was coin flip at this point, Romeo steps in front of her.

"Now we didn't come here for a fight. I came to see Master Totomaru", he begun to explain, "I need to speak to him reg-"

"Wasn't talking to you", was all Romeo heard when he was in the middle of his sentence as Juri's hand press up on the left side of his face and he felt himself actually lift off the ground and go flying several yards off to his right, barely landing on his feet as he came back down.

"Oh, this will not end well.", were the first words to go through his mind as he turn back around to the three girls, eyes widening in horror as he spots Juri pointing a finger into Wendy's chest.

"Listen here, you iron-board chested wench! Just because you got a few lucky hits in yesterday doesn't mean you're the top bitch around here, that title belongs to me!", she shouts, "Now I want a rematch and I'm getting it whether you like it or not!"

The lightning mage's words never reached Wendy's ears for the dragon-slayer's mind was in something of a dream at that moment.

A dream where she was ripping Juri limb from limb for daring to commit two of the most grievous transgressions against her within the span of five seconds.

A dream where the authorities couldn't find a single trace of the girl's body to used at the dragon-slayer's murder trial.

A dream where Juri's soul was forever doom to haunt the grounds of the school for she had suffered a demise so horrible that her soul could not find rest and was barred from the afterlife.

A dream that she was about to make a reality at this very moment.

Wendy lets out bestial growl as she smacks away Juri's hand.

"You know, I used to think Natsu had a death wish in regards to the people he would pick fights with; but you clearly make him look like a pacifist in that regards!" she shouts as she charges up her magic and the winds began to pick up around the area.

All the while, Romeo only had one thought going through his head.

"Maybe I should have left earlier this morning."
