Chapter 1

Sarah MacKenzie sat in her car and stared up at the large home, the Robert's residence Bud had purchased a little over ten years ago when he and Harriet had yet another child. Aburey had been their 'oops' baby making it five in total with AJ, James and twins Zachary and Jillian.

She'd been at the home countless times, her taking the position as a liason for the Corps meant a move back to DC with her choosing any service man or woman as her assistant. She immediately thought of Harriet. The younger woman was grateful for the job especially given her boss allowed for lenient work hours and plenty of time for her family.

In truth, Mac didn't need the help, what she needed was an old friend, something she missed once she and Harm decided on their amicable split so many years ago. Subordinates came and went, so did the two lovers that had been but idle amusement.

The one man she had taken serious interest in was married and faked a divorce which left Mac feeling like a fool. That had been three years ago and although she moved back to Washington and found her close friends, she was still lonely.

Work was the outlet to ease some of her wayward feelings. Helping Harriet and Bud with their kids had been a saving grace. But at night, in the emptiness of her apartment, her mind couldn't help but wonder.

It had been months since she last saw Harm. Their conversation playing in her mind like an endless loop. "We're way past letting fate decide." She barely let him speak, dictating the pace of the entire conversation just like the times he'd run right over the top of her.

Clear in his lack of fighting was his feelings for her - they ran cold nine years prior and she was the stupid woman hanging on to every shred of her love for him while Harm found it easy to move on. She hated that about him, how their split was just another thing to comparmentalize like their house in San Diego or the SUV they bought together.

Maybe she should have fought for him and taken the suggestuon to seek couple's therapy to highlight the faults that they couldn't get past. He wanted out, taking a tour on a ship was Harm's method. She was too stupid to stop him. Too in love to crush his dream of flying once again.

She never learned how to talk to him. And maybe he never learned how to talk to her. The dynamic they had shared as partners at JAG was all for not. They forgot how to work together or maybe they never really knew how but the relationship, the engagment and impending marriage was doomed.

Mac's hands shook when she glanced up for the third time in twenty minutes and found Harm's cherry red Corvette parked in the corner. Had she known he was in town, she would have faked an illness just to stay away. With a heavy sigh she threw open the door of her BMW and made a slow march to the front door.

Holiday music thumped from inside and she hoped a quick ingress and egress would be possible without bumping into Harm.

It took only two steps for a wall of 6'4" Navy Captain to come careening into her. His large palm came to her shoulder to prevent a fall, his other hand wrapped around her trim waist. Damn did her traitorous body still tingle from his touch and once Harm righted the ship those beautiful blue eyes widened in shock. "Sorry ma'am I'm-"

His appology died on his lips and the smile he wore turned into something of a sly grin. It was clear this event was amusing to at least one of them and Harm always seemed the type to joke of such things. "Mac. Hello..Uh... Hi! I was wondering if I'd bump into you."

This was going to be one long and awkward night.
