XXX Chapter 6 Home
Kate took in the smell of the real forest that surrounded them. She looked up at the sky. There was no brown fog. There was a beautiful blue sky with clouds and a hot sun. It must have been summer time, wherever they were.
It was a miracle.
She happily gazed at her surroundings. The other survivors were getting up. Some winced from their injuries. Some of the survivors removed their jackets and tied it around open wounds. Others gaped at the real world, unable to believe what just happened.
After Dwight finished bandaging a wound, he scurried over to a tree and wrapped his arms around the trunk. He sniffed it. "I think it's real, you guys!" he announced.
Kate stood up, eager to find their hero and tell him they'd escaped the dystopia. She looked around, finding a figure strewn out in the grass. He was splattered with bruises, blood, and lacerations. She reached for his pulse and found one. He didn't look anything like the ghost she knew from the Entity. He looked like a normal man. When he exited the Entity, he must have shed his artificial body. Was it really the Wraith, or could it have been another killer?
There was no other way to know. She ran forward and lifted one of his eyelids. Instead of a blue color, she found brown. "I don't know if this is him," she said.
The survivors looked warily at her. "I usually feel pretty lucky, but I don't want to take the chance and guess," Ace told her.
"Well, what do we do? Do we wait for him to wake up?" Kate asked.
"I don't think that's a good idea," Meg answered. "We should tie him up or something, and then wait for him to wake up."
"Tie him up with what?" Dwight asked.
"You guys, how are we getting out of this forest?" Ace suddenly asked. "We don't even know which country we're in."
"He's right," David said. "We're not out of the woods yet. Literally."
"Hey, didn't the Wraith tell us to watch out for the Shape?" Laurie asked. "What happened to Michael Myers? Did he escape with us? Or is he still trapped with the other killers?"
The survivors tensed, feeling incredibly cold all of a sudden. Michael was smart, and he was crazy, but he was not so insane that he was lost in his madness. Had he taken the opportunity to abandon the Entity to make his way back here? Their eyes scanned the forest.
They didn't see or hear anything.
"Our weapons are gone! Get something to defend yourself with," Bill ordered.
Claudette hugged herself. She didn't escape from the Entity just to die by Michael's hand, or to release him back into the world.
"Hey, look everyone!" Jake said from on top of a nearby hill. A huge smile was plastered on his face as he pointed to the ground in the distance. "These are trails! That must mean people are close by!"
Everyone gave a sigh of relief. Kate started tearing up again. They were going to make it. Wherever they were, there was civilization nearby that probably held a phone or computer they could use.
Just then, an awful groaning could be heard. Kate saw the man in the grass twitch. He struggled to get up. She ran over to him, tossing caution to the wind. She decided that it must have been the Wraith.
"Be careful, Kate!" Meg yelled after her. "What if he's one of the others?" Kate continued running. "Or what if he's not done being a killer?"
"We all owe him a thank you," Kate responded, deciding that he must be their hero. She touched his shoulders and brought his head up. "I'll be the first one."
The man slowly opened his eyes. He knew someone was holding him, and he knew that she had lovely blonde hair, but he could barely see anything else.
"Hello there," she said, smiling wide. Her voice was angelic. He reached up towards her face with bloody hands. She caught them. "Can you hear me? You saved us."
Was that true? Did he save them? Memories came to him. Ghastly memories that would haunt him forever. He remembered living as a terrible specter for years. He remembered hunting people down, and he remembered deciding that he needed to end it. He remembered doing the impossible when he took on the other killers and the Entity. But most of all, he remembered the woman in front of him. He never realized how beautiful she was when he'd been the Wraith.
He stretched out his memory. He used to be called Philip Ojomo. "I'm Phil," he rasped. "I remember saving you. I also remember you saving me."
Kate's eyes welled up with tears and she giggled. She smiled at him like he was a lover she thought she'd never see again. He noticed how the sunshine drifted through her tresses and how it highlighted her face. It was the most beautiful thing he'd seen in a long, long time.
"I'm Kate. Can you stand? It's time for us to get out of here. Together."
She was his Winston, after all.
The end.

Well, I think this turned out pretty good.
Some analysis. Kate was the main character because she was the most optimistic. Only she would have been crazy enough to try talking to a killer. I chose the Wraith to help her because he seemed to be the most sympathetic killer out of all of them. He wasn't sadistic or insane in the past like the others.
I try to add an element of Christianity into my stories. That's where the dream idea came from. Kate may or may not necessarily be a believer, but she was open to the possibility, and God helped her. This is also where Phil realized he couldn't let fear control him anymore. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33.
When the Wraith thought about how much he used to like to read classics, that was a nod to 1984. He was subconsciously remembering the book as Kate consciously embraced its warnings.
Not all of the killers got to fight the Wraith because the Entity realized he needed to let the rebels go before it lost the rest of its killers. It was thinking about survival.
I suppose I could have turned this story into a novella, but I have my own novels to work on, too. That said, fanfiction is a great way to practice writing.
