Okay, we all know that if you have gotten the Monsters Inc. storybook then you figured out that Randall has a nephew! But…in my story Randall doesn't have any siblings. ….or does he? Sit back and enjoy the next chapter!
Chapter 23: A Brother Unknown
Randall moaned tiredly as he was woken up by a phone ringing. He looked up and rolled over to answer the phone. He pulled it off the receiver and held it up to his ear. Whoever it was they were going to face his wrath. Everyone knew it was best not to wake the lizard monster, especially when he was sick. He rubbed his eyes as he answered.
"What?"
"Hey Randall! It's your favorite older brother!"
"…how did you know I was at Fungus'?" The sick monster asked after a moment of silence.
"You didn't answer your phone at your house and you weren't at your parents. Speaking of, I was talking to your, I mean our parents, are you sure it's okay for me to call Emilia and Cheryal our parents? I still don't feel comfortable addressing them as such."
"Yes Evan, it's fine. You're my older brother, they're my parents, they love you, it's fine." He stopped and sneezed. "Look Evan, I'm not feeling so good… so can you hurry this up?"
"Oh sorry, well they were wondering if you wanted to come over for dinner. They just got back into town and they were surprised to see that you weren't there to greet them."
"I was on my way when I got sick. Look Evan, just have the dinner without me. Tell them I'll be over when I feel better. Okay?"
"Are you sure? I mean if you're sick then we both know mom and… wait which one is mom and mama?"
Randall sighed. Ever since he and Evan found each other and been getting to know each other's families, Evan was still having a hard time getting used to trying to difference which label went to Emilia and Cheryal. Not that Randall didn't understand his brother's troubles, even Fungus and Cheyenne had their own struggles when they started to hang out with him, but it does get a little tedious when you have to repeat the same answer.
"Cheryal is mom and Emilia is mama. Now tell them I love them, and I'll see you guys later."
"Randall are you sure bro-"
"Good bye Evan. Like I told you I'm sick. So I'm going to sleep. It's like a weekend thing, bye."
Without another word, Randall hanged up. He sighed as he rolled over and tried to fall back to sleep. His body shivered from his cold and pulled the blankets closer to his chin, seeking warmth. He didn't want to think about his parents and his older brother at the moment, he was too tired. He would've gone back out to see what was going on with his co-workers but sleep consumed him.
The others were still sitting in the living room. They were getting over the awkwardness of Randall being down the hall from them and Fungus sitting not too far from them. The tri-spectacle monster's usual nervous attitude was replaced with an irritated one. It was obvious to see that he wasn't too happy with them.
"Look Fungus, we didn't mean-" Sulley began.
"Save it for Randall. But I doubt he's going to forgive you."
"We figured as much."
Marge took over the book. Despite her star-fish like appearance and not having a mouth, they were still able to understand her as she read.
"Chapter 23: A Brother unknown.
You know how most people have a sibling? Well I had one too. Only I didn't figure it out until nineteen years after I was born. Well, usually a reunion is a good thing. Well not in my case. It was around Christmas time of my rookie year as a scarer when I enthusiastically waited for what the annual Boggs' Christmas party was going to be held. I was treading to my parents' house when I got stopped by Spencer and another reptile. I scowled. Years of not seeing the snob and now here he was, heading straight towards me. I kept my head low as I made my way. I cringed when he recognized me.
"Randall Boggs, that couldn't be you."
"Perfect," I muttered, before forcing a smile and looking up at him. "Spencer McDouglas. What a surprise. I never expected to see you walking on the street like a normal citizen."
"It wasn't really my choice."
"Oh?" I crossed my four arms. "Why is that?"
He motioned to the other reptile. I looked at him. He seemed familiar, but I couldn't place my finger on it. He was the same height I was only, only about three inches taller, and he was blue with an orange tail. He had the same number or arms and legs as me along with the gecko-like pads, the same number of fronds, but what really caught my attention was the same emerald green eyes we had.
"This is my friend Evan Alexander."
I blinked.
"Alexander?" I looked over at Evan. "Do you happen to know Chet Alexander?"
"Unfortunately he's my cousin."
"Wow…"
"Why? Do you know him?"
"We went to college together. We were in the same fraternity."
"No way!"
I couldn't help but smile. I really liked this guy. It was a shame that he was friends with an enemy of mine and the cousin of someone who was a jerk. I was sure that we would've end up continuing to talk if Spencer McDouglas didn't feel like a third wheel and decided to cut our enjoyment by butting in.
"So where are you heading Boggs?"
"My parents' house. It's a couple of blocks away. Which I better get going. If I stay out here any longer they'll think I'll catch ammonia and die on them. It was nice meeting you Evan and um…" I paused as I looked at Spencer, "it was…eventful to see you McDouglas. Bye."
As I started walking I couldn't help but wonder why this guy seemed so familiar to me. I never met the guy before. Was he one of the people that used to pick on me in school? No, I would've remembered if he went to our school. The only reptiles that was there was me and Spencer. Did I see him at one of the games our school did? Wait, no, I never went to the games due to the fact of always getting shoved in the trash cans or lockers. Okay… so why do I feel like I know this guy? I was lost in my thoughts as I entered my parents' house. Just something about this guy… I was jerked out of my thinking when I was pulled into a bone crushing hug.
"Oh my little Randy!" Emilia cried.
"Ack! Mama!" I complained, trying to get out of her arms. "I can't…breath!"
She released me and started asking me a million questions. Something I learned that is just bare through and answer them as best as I can. Even if none of them was just her overreacting.
"Did you get hurt? Are you okay? Don't you have a coat? I thought you bought a coat! Did you forget it at home? You could've caught a cold! Or ammonia! Or…or…" A gasp, "Pneumonia! We better get you one the couch! You lay right there and I'll go fetch the baby thermometer! I'll also get you a blanket! And your sweaters!"
"Mama-" I tried to interrupt.
I sighed in irritation as she ran off. Nineteen years old and she treats me like I'm still two. I crossed my arms as I waited for her. I went back to thinking about Evan. For some reason, I couldn't shake the feeling that I know him. I stood up and went into the kitchen grabbing a can of soda. Eight years it took my parents to finally relent to allow soda in the house. Cheryal didn't allow it because it was unhealthy and Emilia didn't like them because of what they put in them. She's been reading too many controversial health facts. I sat down, but before I could, she ran in when with my sweaters, a blanket and the thermometer. She sat them next to me and took the soda out of my hand and sat it down on the coffee table. I started to protest.
"Hey! Mama, I was going to drink that!"
"Soda, when you're sick? Absolutely not!"
"But I'm not sick!"
Apparently my words fell on deaf ears as she started putting one of my sweaters on me. I huffed in irritation as I tried to pull away. It was only typical of me being over-powered by her since I was half her size and 300 pounds lighter. I growled as I tried to pull away.
"Mama!"
I managed to pull away after she managed to put three sweaters on me. I growled as I tugged on them. It's 73 degrees in here and she went to put three sweaters on me. I yelped when she sat me on the couch. I knew where this was going and I had to put a stop to her.
"Mama!" I stood up and grabbed her face. "This is your only child, Randall speaking! You need to take a breath and calm down! You are overreacting over nothing again!"
I waited for a moment before she finally took a breath and calmed down. She chuckled nervously as I rolled my eyes. I love my parents, I do. But they panic over the littlest things with me. I sighed as I started taking off the sweaters.
"I'm sorry Randall. I just get so worried about you. With all the bad stuff that happened to you, and you being so thin and sickly, I just can't help but worry about you. You're our little boy and we just want to keep you safe. Isn't there any way you can move back in with us?"
I frowned. Ever since I went off to college they've been calling me at least five times a day, and trying to get me to move back in with them. Which I can see why, after all they raised me and I know all the horrible stuff that happened to me.
"No Mama. I like my apartment. I'm not sick. Now that I got you to calm down, can we talk like normal adults?"
"Okay, I'm sorry."
"Thank you," I replied sitting down. "Now you'll never guess who I saw on my way here."
"Who?"
"Spencer McDouglas."
"Randall… don't tell me you got into a fight with him."
"No. It was just a normal conversation, but he introduced me this reptile and… I don't know there's something about him. He… kind of looks like me. Well except for the coloring and being slightly taller."
"So do you think you made a new friend?"
I shrugged.
"I don't know. Just… something about him."
"Well maybe you'll see him again."
"Maybe…" I muttered.
It wasn't until a few weeks later when I ran into Evan again. I was on my way back home from work when I ended up running into him. He was walking out of the store as I was heading in. I was focused on looking over my list when I ended up running into someone. I grunted as I heard both of us hitting the ground and his groceries spilling.
"What where ya going you-" I stopped in mid sentence when I saw Evan. "You! Oh! I'm uh…" I helped him up and started helping picking up his things. "Sorry about that."
"Oh it's no problem. Um… it's…Randall isn't it?"
"Oh yea, Randall Boggs."
"Evan Alexander if you don't remember. You know um… forgive me if this sounds… obsessive, creepy, homosexual but… I have been thinking about you for the past several weeks."
I waved it off.
"Don't feel bad. I uh… admit that I've been thinking about you two. I mean we look so-"
"Similar?" he finished for me.
"Yes!"
"That's what I've been thinking! Where you adopted? I was."
"Me too! Are you able to camouflage?"
"Totally! Do you think we could be… related?"
I bite my bottom lip. It was possible. For years I had dreamed of having an older sibling. And here it is, it could be actually happening. I shrugged. The only answer I could give.
"It's possible. I'll talk to mom if there's any way she could give us a DNA test. It shouldn't be too hard. I just hope she's in a good mood when she gets home for work. Of course they're going to want to meet you. If they don't then they're going to think your some thug or murderer trying to con me or something. And I don't need them to find any more reasons to try and shelter me."
"Over protective parents?"
"Very over protective."
"I see, well. Uh… I would give you my number but my arms are full."
"Oh uh… here, let me help."
Taking some of his groceries, I followed him to his place. I blinked in surprise as he took me up to the more rich side of Monstropolis. Now I was no stranger to this part of the city. I had been over this side several times when Emilia took me along with her on some of her business meetings. My parents could've easily decided to live on this side of the city, but they chose to live a medium class life. The whole time we were talking about our likes, dislikes, basically everything and we had a lot in common.
"You're kidding!" he gawked at me.
"I'm not! She literally dragged down into the sewers to look for it! Humon hunting is terrifying! We spent hours wondering around the sewers trying to find the Cockroach kid. I was at my wits end."
"I can't believe it. Especially that you're friends with a famous rock star."
"Yea, I don't really like to brag about it. We usually don't make a big deal about it. She was just Cheyenne Wags the crazy adventurer and best friend before she became Cheyenne Wags, rock star. And trust me, you do NOT want to get her mad. She's quite good at getting revenge."
"Wow."
"No kidding. I can't believe Chet is your cousin."
He snorted.
"Don't remind me. He's not exactly the brightest crayon in the box."
"I believe it."
We shared a laugh. As he unlocked the door to his penthouse we walked in. I blinked as I looked around. It was nicely decorated with the décor mostly of red, blues, greens and gold. He lead me to the kitchen and we started putting up his groceries.
"I would like to stay but I really need to get going. I have to get my groceries and get to bed for work."
"Oh well… okay then. Oh here, let me get you a DNA sample. I'll also give you my number so you can me the results."
"Will do."
I took the time to look around as he gave me his DNA and wrote down his number for me. Once he handed me the items, I thanked him and wished him a good night. I blinked when I saw my parents. This could not be happening.
"What are you two doing here?"
"Making sure you didn't die! You can't just go follow some stranger to his house!" Cheryal shouted at me.
I groaned. It became worse when Evan came out. Of course my parents being the over dramatic, over protective monsters they are, got the worst case scenario in their heads, instead of calmly asking me what was going on. It was this attitude that ended up having me a nervous wreck and low self esteem. Which of course I don't fully blame my parents for all of it. It was also fueled by years of being bullied and abuse from other adults.
"Mom! Mama!" I called, trying to calm them down.
Evan looked over at me in confusion and I gave him an apologetic smile. This was truly embarrassing. I go and help my possible brother out and here my parents are stalking me and acting like I snuck out of the house to hang out with a bunch of drug addicts. It wasn't long before I eventually lost my temper.
"Will you two knock it off!?" I shouted, finally silencing them.
They looked at me in shock. I hardly ever blew up at them, mostly because I didn't like to upset them, and I was very shy and worried if I got into a fight with them, that it could end up with me being hurt in some way. But I was just so mad and upset that they were treating me like I was a little kid. I graduated college and I had a job for crying out loud! I didn't need them hovering over me! I took a breath trying to calm down, but before I could get a chance to scold them, Emilia grabbed my hand.
"Hey! What are you doing? Let go of me!"
"We are going to have quite a talk when we get home." Cheryal scolded me.
I looked at Evan and mouthed "I'm sorry." He shrugged it off and waved good bye to me. I sulked as I followed my parents' home. There was no doubt that I was going to be chewed out. This was not the reunion that I hoped for when I wanted Evan and my parents to meet if he was my brother. This was one the worst and most humiliating moments in my life. And I knew that this wasn't going to be the last of them."
"Eesh, he wasn't kidding about his parents being over protective." Ted replied.
"I'm surprised that he has a brother and he was adopted into Chet Alexander's family." Mike spoke, looking at Sulley.
The large blue behemoth nodded in agreement. He had to wonder what it was like if they ever met with Randall's parents. A small smile came on his face as he imagined the two monsters fussing over the reptile. It would be nice to actually see the supposed cold-hearted reptile shed that icy demeanor that he was well known for in the factory. But of course, he could only dream. And he made a note that he would try to be nicer to him from now on.
That's the chapter everyone!
Hope you all liked it and I'll see you in the next one!
