Real or virtual abduction

Hi everyone, I'm very exited to come back with this story. It was written in French for the Event "Halloween 2020" of the French group "Papotage, écriture, lecture et bonne humeur"; I am now translating it into English. We had three lists: one with words, one with creatures and one with situations or actions. We had to take one item from each list for every chapter. The ones I have chosen are in the chapter title.

I think publishing once or twice a week, depending on my schedules at work.

I do it for my English private classes, so I want to thanks my teachers for all her corrections (there had a lot actually... :/ ).

I don't own the characters of Hawaii 5-0.

Please, take note that Danny and Steve are in love in this story, it will have some graphic descriptions of violence and mature content; if you don't like it stop reading now, thank you.

Chapter 1: wake up enchained to a table, nothing, Jack O'Lantern

Steve coughed. The pain exploding in his head after this brought him back to consciousness, but he didn't think about it too long. His body tensed immediately when he felt heavy chains around his ankles and wrists. He couldn't move at all. He was laying down on a table and a helmet was around his head. He couldn't see anything, he couldn't hear anything. The soldier controlled the anxiety rising up in him and fixed his mind on his other senses. The room was cold, he didn't shiver yet, protected as he was by his clothes, but barely. He recognized his jean fabric against his legs, his t-shirt and shirt fabric against his arms and torso. He still had his shoes. All of these were good signs if he could manage to get off this table. However, one detail caught his attention: he was wearing gloves. Gloves which seemed very rigid when he tried to move his fingers. Intrigued, he tried to move the rest of his body and realized he was wrapped in rigid straps. They seemed to be parallel and spaced by approximately ten centimeters apart. The upper one was on his neck, just under his jaw and the lowest ones around his toes. Even if he didn't understand the reason of them at the moment, he realized two things: his abductors undressed then redressed him to place them and it didn't look good.

His abductors… he considered it. Obviously he had been kidnapped, but when? How? He remembered that he had been taken for a drink with his team, had gotten into his car, had turned it on… and then, nothing. Had he been drugged? It was not impossible, not very likely, but… a flash memory came back, a beautiful redheaded woman speaking with him, Danny, jealous who left irritated. Steve had run after him to reassure him. The blond had told him he could find him at his home later on if he wanted to and had left. After that, Steve had finished his drink with the firm intention to meet his lover as soon as possible. It had been the only moment he had his drink out of his sight. If someone had added drugs in his glass, it had been at that time. Was he the only one who had been abducted? How were Danny and his friends?

His anxiety, which was rising back, was stopped by a light. An orange point had turned on at his left and came to him. Even though he couldn't move, Steve's body got tense, the Marine was getting ready… he didn't know what he had to get ready for, but he prepared himself for pain.

Quickly the light was close enough for Steve to distinguish that it was coming from a carved pumpkin. The monstrous eyes and mouth illuminated Steve whilst the top hole revealed the face of a drunkard with no age. Steve was as strained as he could be.

"I would love to share a drink with you, but the Devil kept my last coins," said the man as an introduction. The man voice came without doubts from the helmet and despite the intonations from the alcohol, it seemed coherent. Steve wondered if he was having visions or not. "Please, sit."

Steve heard another sound, farther, like a click and he felt the pressure of the chains been released. Carefully, he sat up. He was disturbed. He knew that he was blinded by the helmet, but he could see this man clearly.

"You are in a virtual world, a bit like being in a video game. However, there is an exception here: you have one life only. You have twenty-eight worlds to go through. In each of them you need to find a chest, in which there a piece of keys. With the fragments you will recreate seven keys that open cells."

Photos appeared in front of Steve's eyes, they showed Kono, Chin, Danny, Grace, Kamekona, Lou and Adam. After a flinch from the surprise of seeing the photos popping up this way, it was fear that struck Steve.

"You will have a definite time to open each cell. If you can not make it, one of them will die. You will not have a second chance."

Steve wanted to speak, but he realized that the helmet prevented him from doing so. A door appeared behind the lantern man, who cringed. He pointed at something on the right, above Steve's vision. The prisoner looked up in that direction and discovered a digital clock.

Seven hours.

"It's your time to open the first cell, starting when you will pass this door. Don't forget, you will have to face the consequences if you don't make it."

Steve didn't need this reminder. He took a big breath and stood up. He was surprised to realize that he had been freed from the chains. He stopped just in front of the door. He didn't know if his friends were really in danger. What would happened if he refused to play this game? He raised his hand to the helmet with the idea to take it off, but an electric shock passed through him when he touched it. Stunned, he needed a few minutes to bring himself together and realized that he was laying down on the floor, the lantern man at his side.

"Each time you try to take off a part of your equipment, you will receive an electric shock and you will take a penalty."

A doubt came into Steve's mind as he stood up with difficulty.

"In your place, I would not try. You should go, except if you want us to show you the danger we represent for your friends."

Steve looked up to the clock and realized with terror that his fears were real, he had just lost ten minutes on his time. He stopped wondering which possibilities he had. First, he would play the game. He would see later on if he had the possibility to escape.

With determination, he walked through the door.
