Chapter 2:

Just as they were entering the atmosphere, the occupants inside the lifeboat felt a jolt. This made those inside nervous because a lifeboat jolting before landing was never a good thing. Before anyone could ask what happened, Six spoke up over the comms.

"Counter-thrusters and airbrakes deployed early. Our landing is going to be a little rougher than originally expected."

"Will we survive?" John asked Six.

"Probably," was Six's immediate response.

"Ready for emergency landing!" Carter yelled out to everyone.

Casper flipped multiple switches as he tried everything he could to ensure a smooth landing. Despite all his efforts, the ground was still coming up fast. Those that were in seats grabbed their safety harnesses while those that stood up grabbed onto the railings.

"Brace for impact!" everyone heard Casper say right before there was an earth-shattering crash and everything went black.

Chief woke up to the voice of Cortana telling him to get up. He immediately got on his feet and looked around, taking in his surroundings. All the occupants of the lifeboat other than the Spartans sat still in their seats, most likely dead. John made a quick shook of his head disappointed they didn't live before assessing what's left of Noble team. Emile was still getting his bearings, Carter checked the pulses of the slumped over Marines while Kat assisted Six, who looked dizzy, out of the pilot's seat

"What happened?" John asked Cortana.

"Just as Six said, the landing was rough, luckily none of you have any serious injuries."

John nodded and picked up his MA5B. Though right before he could speak up, Carter began issuing orders to his team. "Emile, start salvaging as many weapons, gear, and ammo you can find. Kat, get on the horn to see if you can locate any friendly units in the vicinity. Six, provide security until we are ready to move out."

The Spartans mentioned quickly went out to do their assigned tasks. While John wasn't the highest ranked Spartan, since his close friend Fred-104 was a Lieutenant, he was used to everyone following his lead. Carter than noticed that Chief was still standing where he was and made his way over to him.

"Look Chief, I know all the Spartan-2s consider you to be their leader, but this is my team. Is there going to be a problem?" Carter asked the Master Chief respectfully.

John shook his head. "No sir."

"I respect you immensely Chief, so do the others, if you have any ideas or plans feel free to speak. I'm confident the others wouldn't mind if you were 2IC, I'll inform them later," Carter explained to which Chief nodded his head in acceptance and understanding.

As soon as Carter finished speaking, Kat spoke up which caught Carter's and Chief's attention," Commander, I've made contact with a Sergeant-Major Johnson who landed with a squad-sized force. They've got wounded and they've set up a RP at a structure about one kick north-west of here. I set up a waypoint for us. Transmitting now."

Everyone nodded and began to make their way towards the structure. Keeping an eye out for any sign of the enemy.

While they did see a few Covenant Spirits and Banshees patrolling the area, most likely looking for survivors, the group managed to avoid detection and make it to the rally point. A few marines greeted them as they arrived. "Through here, Spartans." One of the marines said as he pointed up towards an alcove. The four super soldiers made their way up a ramp that led up to it. As they reached the top, Casper spotted the Sergeant-Major Johnson, monitoring the horizon with a BR55 battle rifles scope as he remained alert for enemy contacts. Casper met his fair share his of terrifying NCO's, both in his past and his present life, but he never met one as intimidating as the one standing before him right now. Even him just looking through the rifles scope was sure to make a recruit sweat so much to fill a large bucket. Once he noticed us, he let out a small smile and walked over.

"Good to see you're still among the living Spartans," Johnson said with his rifle pointed towards the ground.

Chief nodded before he replied. "What's the sitrep Sergeant-Major?" He asked with his usual gruff voice. Johnson began informing us about potential locations in the valley where more UNSC personnel may be held up and how they do not the current whereabouts of the Captain. While Casper knew that the Captain was held on a disabled Covenant ship, he did not know the exact location. Besides, they would know the position soon so he felt no need to speak up. The debriefing continued until they heard the voice of a marine yelling out.

"Incoming Charlie Spirit at my 6!" We all immediately sprinted into action and quickly checked how much ammo we still had. As soon as the Spirit landed, we all opened fire with the aliens that came out with consisted of a squad of Grunts, a couple of Jackals, and an Elite with red armor. The firefight didn't last too long thanks to a well-placed frag thrown by John that forced them out from cover. As soon as they were out in the open, they only lasted a few seconds.

Two more Covenant Spirits arrived as soon as the first group was dealt with and soon the field became a battleground between Covenant forces and UNSC survivors. However, thanks to the presence of 5 Spartans, two of which were the only ones to ever reach the level of Hyper-Lethal victory, the fight only lasted a few minutes with a victory for the humans. All the human survivors managed to make it through the fight and began bandaging their wounds with the medkits that they acquired from the lifeboats.

Suddenly, a transmission came through our radios." Any station this net, this is Echo 419, does anyone copy? I say again, any UNSC personnel please respond, over."

Johnson quickly turned on his radio to reply," This is Echo-9-Juliet, Interrogative: this that you Foehammer?"

"Affirmative, Echo-9-Juliet. Good to hear you mad it!" The reply was heard through the comms. Foehammer seemed to genuinely be relieved to locate some survivors.

"Requesting evac at my location, will mark will red smoke, over" Johnson said with a grin.

"Roger, I'm Oscar mike, out."

Soon as the radio conversation ended, Johnson ordered a nearby Lance Corporal to throw out a smoke grenade to mark their position, which he did. As they waited for evac, the Spartans continued to scan for any signs of Covenant contacts, both on the ground and in the sky." Luckily, none had soon up with Foehammer arrived, with a warthog magnetically attached to it.

Once the Pelican landed on the LZ, a Marine yelled out more Lifeboats were landing. We raised out heads to see multiple Lifeboats falling downward like comets towards the Ring. Crashing into nearby valleys. Chief, Chief and Cortana conversed with each other to draw up a plan of action, with the rest of us pitching in when we had an idea or something to point out. A minute had almost passed when Cortana announced what they were going to do.

"Noble 1 and 2, we need you to board the Pelican and help coordinate and organize whatever forces made it down. Foehammer disengage your Warthog. Chief, 4, 6 and I will conduct a CSAR on where those lifeboats landed."

"I'll remain on station to evac survivors when needed, out." Foehammer told us as the survivors as well as Noble 1 and 2 hopped on the Pelican. When they were on, Kat went to operate the onboard console while Carter went with her. As soon as the Hog dropped, Emile got on the chain gun located on the back, clearly eager to use it on the Covenant. Chief hopped into the driver's seat while Six sat right next to him in the passenger's spot. Cortana's voice came through the radios built into our helmets. "All right, you boys ready for a road trip?"

Chief stepped on the pedal which kicked it into gear. Dirt flew behind us as we headed to navigation point that Cortana set up on our HUDs. He drove for a bit until they reached an underground cave.

"Hmm, this cave is not a natural formation." Cortana thought out loud.

"Nnnooo," Emile said with sarcasm dripping in his voice. Cortana let out a huff while Chief and Six chuckled softly before they entered the tunnels.

While navigating the way through the tunnels, the three super soldiers encountered a large cavern that had no visible way to cross it. Covenant squads ambushed them as soon as they entered the room. Chief used the Hog run some over while Six picked them off with shots from his DMR. Emile just let loose with the Chain gun as .50 Cal rounds tore through Grunts, Jackals, and Elites. Soon, as they were all dead, Cortana told us to search for any way to cross the cavern. John ordered Emile to stay with the Hog and that Casper take the right side while he took the left. Six remembered where the controls were when he played this level and made his way towards it. "Chief, I think I found the controls," Casper said into his radio as he moved his hand towards it. Once he touched the display, the console reacted by activating a bridge across the cavern.

"Man, that's even cooler in person," Six thought to himself as he recalled memories from his earlier life.

"From what I can tell that bridge is made out of some kind of hard light. It should be safe to cross over," Cortana said through out helmets." Chief and Six went back to the Warthog and entered their previous seats. John drove fast across the bridge to make up for lost time. Before we knew it, we were on dirt again as we entered a large canyon.

Cortana marked three waypoints that showed the locations of the three Lifeboats that crashed on our HUDs. Chief drove to the closet one where we saw a group of Marines fending off some Jackals and Grunts. Some as we arrived, Emile opened fired with the Chain gun, making short work of them. When we were sure they were dead, we began to secure the perimeter while Cortana contacted Foehammer to request exfil.

"Understood, I'm Oscar mike, out," once she finished her reply, Casper threw out a red smoke grenade to mark the LZ. About a minute later, Echo 419 arrived and landed to pick up the Marines. Once they were onboard, the three Spartans jumped back into the Hog and made their way towards the next Lifeboat crash site.

When we were almost there, we heard a firefight occurring in the hills. Chief turned the Warthog towards the gunfire and drove towards it. It was good that we did because he saw a large group of humans fighting multiple covenant squads. As we drove towards, them a few Grunts noticed us and immediately began to open fire on us. Once they did, Chief executed evasive maneuvers to avoid the incoming fire and run them over, while Six and Mile opened fire. Casper shot with expert precision at the heads of Jackals and Grunts, wasting no more than a second on target before moving on to the next. Emile concentrated fire on the Elites as the chain gun quickly depleted their shields and tore their armor. Once they were sure that they were clear of hostiles, the three made their way towards the group. Where an Army soldier informed them that they were from the second and third lifeboats that crashed and that they linked up with each other before they were engaged by the Covenant. The soldier also told them about a nearby structure and how it would be a good place for a LZ. The Spartans took point as they led the group to it, encountering mild resistance in the form of Grunts and Jackals. Soon as they arrived, Cortana radioed Echo 419 for dust-off while Emile let out another smoke grenade. A few minutes later, Foehammer returned and landed. Casper was the last one in as the Pelican was filled to almost full capacity. He sat down on the last seat available, right next to Chief and across from Emile. Just about he was about to close his eyes to get some rest, he heard Foehammer talking over the Pelican's intercom.

"We're heading to Alpha base to join Major Silva and the other Spartans. ETA 1 hour, so get some sleep while you can." She said before turning on the intercom.

Chief let out a sigh of tiredness in the chair he was sitting next to Casper. It was a long day of fighting and there would be even more in the days ahead. Six looked across towards Emile who appeared to be taking the advice from Foehammer and was getting some shut eye. Before Six did so as well, he took a quick glance out through the back of the ship as the pelican flew the land below.

Despite knowing everything that was about to happen, about the many more hardships they would have to endure, Casper allowed himself not to care about that for a few moments and enjoy a few hours of rest.

(A.N): I would just like to thank again to everyone who decided to give this story a shot and to those that left a review. Made my day when some of you complemented the story. Just to let you guys know, I never read the Halo novels. As such, I will not be including the Halo novels such as Halo: First Strike or Halo: Ghosts of Onyx. I may include some details and a summary of what happened based on what I know but I will not be going into them in detail. Apologies for this.

As for who will lead the Spartans, Carter will lead them while Chief will be Second in command. The reason for this is because while Chief may be more combat experience, Carter still technically outranks him and since he's an officer he would have better training in leading troops. I know John was considered to be the leader of the Spartans but Carter doesn't have the experience that the rest of the Spartan-2s have with Chief, they only just met. Chief will respect Carter's leadership but Carter will often consult him and take his advice on situations. Hope this doesn't upset you. If you have any disagreements, let me know your reasoning in a review but please be nice and respectful.

Furthermore, when they get to Alpha Base Carter's going to be in command instead of Major Silvia. If I'm not mistaken, Carter is a Commander which would be equivalent to Lieutenant-Colonel in the Marines. Therefore, Carter is higher ranked then Silvia. While there might be some tension between the ODSTs and the Spartans, I might make it more reserved instead of in your face. Considering they are stuck on an alien object, severely outnumbered, and outgunned they would likely keep their grudges restrained in order to stay alive.

Meanings for terms I used:

-Oscar mike: On the move.

-CSAR: Combat Search and Rescue.

-ETA: Estimated Time of Arrival.

-LZ: Landing Zone

-RP: Rally Point.

-Charlie: Covenant

-Echo-9-Juliet: Sergeant-Major Johnson.

I don't know if I used all these terms correctly so I apologize if I got them wrong.

Until next time Spartans.
