A/N: So this is the first chapter I am posting under this author handle, but it is not the first story I have ever posted. I have posted many stories under the author handle 'TheHelpingHand'.

A/N 1: This story is a purely Pokemon story - starting before the Indigo Arc. I've not determined where it is truly going, not yet but I have may ideas and am inspired.

A/N 2: There is another story, one which inspired this one, however I can't remember what it is called so if anyone recognizes the following description please let me know: Someone from the normal world, wakes up in the world of Pokemon in a child's body on the island of Shamatoi. He manages to capture a flying type Pokemon, and gets a job as a mail carrier until he begins his Pokemon journey. while living on the island, he is chosen as that years Chosen One and sent to retrieve the three orbs, and ends up being attacks by Zapdos. He gets the reporters to leave by claiming it was the dog legendary.

I learnt the story name: it's called 'You Know nothing John Snow'.Go give it a read. It's a very good story and I highly recommend it, along with another The Natural.

A/N 3: The chapters for this story will be short, typically between 1,000 and 5,000 words. The move descriptions are mostly based on the Pokedex game data that I have access to on the app on my phone, and all other cannon information was researched from Bulbpedia. Any differences or inconsistencies are likely to have been done intentionally.

A/N 4: 16/10/2021. I've gone back and done a major edit on this story. The premise and concept, and a lot of the flow of the story is the same. However, I've added further details and a bit more body to the story. So, for returning readers I hope that you like the changes. For new readers, enjoy.

Chapter One: Ninetales

There were twenty-one 'main' islands which were considered to be a part of the 'Orange Island' chain. The Archipelago islands were contested islands as they fell directly in between the Johto and Kanto islands. Typically, the people of the Orange Islands consider themselves to be independent of either of these regions, although they did not have a League of their own and so had to answer to the overall ruling and laws of the Indigo Authority. During times of civil war between Johto and Kanto, or when the individual champions and therefore Leagues, were not working in cohesion it became much harder to listen to that authority or get the help that the islands needed. However, it appeared the most recent champion – Lance Blackthorn – was looking to be changing the system for not just Kanto and Johto, but also for the Orange Islands, because he was the Indigo Champion in truth which means he had complete authority over both Leagues.

Considering the typical contention between the two powerful regions who claimed authority over them, Orange Island resident Blake decided to try and give the Orange Islands some more independence by establishing their own tournament. It wasn't an official 'League Tournament', but it was still recognised and did manage to give the Orange Islands a greater sauce of income and therefore independence from their continental brethren. The four gyms that made up the Orange Island Tournament was placed at the four cardinal points of the Archipelago in order to ensure that Pokemon Trainers travelled the greatest amount of distance between the islands, and therefore had to spend more time and money within the islands.

To further differentiate the Orange Island Tournament from the League Tournaments of the mainland's, Blake designed it so that it was not a test of Pokemon strength. Instead, the tournament tested the bond between Pokemon and trainer, their loyalty and trust. Blake, like the four Gym Leaders and all trainers who come from the islands, believe that a strong bond between trainer and Pokemon creates a stronger Pokemon because both trainer and Pokemon are more motivated to succeed and get stronger. To show this strength, trainers would face him in order to try for the 'Winner's Trophy' after earning all four badges. He would use five 'Gym Leader' level Pokemon and if the trainer manages to beat them, he would then send out one of his 'Elite' Level Dragonites. If he is forced to use his Dragonite, then he and everyone from the Orange Island's watching knows that the trainer in question was one to be respected because their Pokemon are strong and they have a good bond.

No matter where one grew up in the Orange Islands, these important values and knowledge of how building trust and loyalty with Pokemon are things that all children learn. The teachers in school are always referring to respect when speaking of how to deal with wild Pokemon; their TV shows and radio stations also underline such values and regularly talk about the changes that Blake and the Gym Four have brought to the Archipelago, and those children with parents who have Pokemon, or are trainers, are exposed to it because there was an entire group of Rangers who travel the islands randomly checking in on any resident with registered Pokemon.

It was rare for someone from the Orange Islands to go on and become a Pokemon Trainer; those that do, have recently begun apprenticing or working as trainers under one of the four Gyms. Despite Pokemon Trainers being rare, there was still a large collection of people with Pokemon because many of the jobs on the islands are much easier with a Pokemon companion: those who run the shipping lanes typically had two or three water Pokemon on them, and the captains also have a flying type, so that they can protect their boats and passengers and seek help or safety if necessary; the people working the berry fields normally had grass type Pokemon as companions to help look after the plants, and the actual land owners let hives of Vespiquen move in to encourage pollination, and typically have a collection of Digletts and Dugtrios to help with the soil maintenance; the minors had rock and ground type companions; builders had strong Pokemon like ground and fighting type; the fire fighters all had water type companions and the parcel service workers had a flying type as their companion when employed by a between island service or a fast Pokemon capable of carrying their weight, like Arcanine or Rapidash, across land when employed by a parcel service on a larger island.

Due to the number of Pokemon that worked as companions to humans, despite the lack of trainers, there was a large detachment of Pokemon Rangers working across the islands alongside Police Officers, Pokemon Doctors and Pokemon Researchers under Professor Ivy with a main base on Valencia Island, and several smaller bases and stations on the other Islands (normally the Pokemon Centres).

There were twenty-seven named islands in the Archipelago chain, each with at least one town or city. The larger islands had more towns and cities depending on what they could support, and several islands were closed to expansion to ensure that the Pokemon who live on them do not become threatened and the produce they make covers enough ground to support all the people who call the Orange Islands their home, such as with the Seven Grapefruit Islands. The remaining islands in the chain didn't have any official residence and so had remained unnamed. Typically, it was only Rangers, searching Pokemon Carers and Pokemon Researchers who visited these unnamed and uninhabited islands with the occasional long distance parcel delivery employee dropping by for the night or to ride out a storm.

On the island of Kumquat, I was born a bastard to a party girl who wanted absolutely nothing to do with a new-born. As far as I'm aware, she either didn't know who my father was, or just didn't tell my father that he had gotten her pregnant. Considering how she acted, and the comments made about her, I wouldn't be surprised to discover that she just didn't know who my father was. She slept with so many men, there was no way that she could have tracked conception back to any one man unless I happened to have been conceived during a time in which she had slowed down and only been with the one man.

After I was born, it was my grandmother who took me in. Grandmother was a stern and serious woman, a hard life of little had aged her prematurely and made her smiles rare. Despite how stern she was, and the disappointment she felt in her daughter, Grandmother loved me dearly and wanted what was best for me. I had just over three years with her. Three years where I was treated and raised like a normal child despite the circumstances of my birth. Then, grandmother's heart gave out on her and I was left with only my mother as a guardian.

For nearly two years, my mother did everything she could to drop me off with various 'friends' while she went out partying. I had no idea where she got the money from, because I knew that she didn't work. As I was constantly moving from house to house, my mother pulled me from the pre-school that grandmother had enrolled me in which meant I was never given the opportunity to go out and be discovered by an authority figure who might intervene in my living situation. My only education came from the TV and Radio which was left on to 'prevent me from hearing' the noise of my guardian of the day, and I'd occasionally have access to a small collection of books. The circle of friends that my mother ran in didn't consist of people who valued education and so they didn't have a lot of reading material for a curious and board mind to investigate.

Kumquat is one of the largest islands in the Orange Island chain, with a very dense city population and a large number of tourists constantly coming and going year-round due to the high number of seaside resorts, hotels and spars. Nearly all Pokemon Trainers who wish to face the four gyms, or tourists interested in travelling between multiple islands, always stopped at Kumquat for a night or two, due to how the shipping lanes were arranged between the islands and the fact one of the gyms was located there. It was due to the high traffic nature of the city, the death of my primary guardian and the fact that I was constantly being moved from one home or apartment to the next, that I was able to slip so easily through the cracks.

Eventually, my mother ran out of friends willing to take in a growing child and she reached out to a boy she had known when she was a kid. A boy who she knew became a man who was hiding from the League due to criminal treatment of Pokemon. It wasn't well known, but a small group of people had settled on one of the previously unnamed islands, naming it 'Grasshope Island' and setting up an illegal Pokemon breading and poaching centre. Because my mother's friend was a high-ranking member of that criminal group, the next time he stopped at Kumquat to get supplies and 'visit some old friends', I was smuggled onto his boat and off to Grasshope.

I wasn't sure how they'd managed to make it so that random League personal and independently travelling trainers didn't stop at the island, but the criminal group were so confident they wouldn't be disturbed that they'd already started building permanent pens to keep the captured and bred Pokemon, as well as for them to use, before I'd been fostered onto them. When I arrived on the island, there was a furnace/storage/laundry building, an egg/incubator storage building, and a kitchen. The Pokemon were being kept in separate sections using cages and electrified fences, but there had been wood piled up to be used in future enclosures. They'd even set up an underwater enclosure to prevent water Pokemon from escaping without creating a manmade lake.

My mother's friend went by the name Gary, whether that was his birth name or not I didn't know, but based on the conversations I'd over heard through the years, I'd assume not. Gary's role within the camp was Breaker or Punisher, which was why the other criminals trusted that he'd 'keep me in line'. He used negative physical contact in order to encourage certain behaviours in Pokemon depending on what the Pokemon in question was being raised or broken for. He had four Pokemon that he owned and used to help him keep control over the Pokemon that were being kept prisoner: a Machamp whose job was to capture and restrain Pokemon, Nidoking who used strength to bring down opponents and poison to weaken them, Seismitoad's primary duty was to help corral water Pokemon and bring them onto land to be 'dealt' with and Fearow to stop any flying type Pokemon from getting away should the temporary wing clipping's fail. All four of the Pokemon were vicious and violent who took joy in causing harm on the captive Pokemon even when they were not ordered to do so. The majority of the captive Pokemon flinch away from these four when seen, even if they were outside of their enclosures.

Then there was 'The Forger' who was never referred to by his true name. Once I'd joined the camp, the Forger was the only person to get his own house; not even 'The Leader' got his own house, instead sleeping in the largest tent and holding meetings in the kitchen. The Forger was the one responsible for creating the false identification that all of the group used when off the island, as well as the identification paperwork for the Pokemon which were sold – be that through legal routes or sent to underground organisations. I'd managed to work out that The Forger had once been a respected and recognised League personnel, which was how he was able to create such realistic forged documents. The only time The Forger interacted with the Pokemon was when he was taking down particulars for the documents, and he rarely interacted with the rest of the camp unless it was to sit and glower at them. If the Forger had a Pokemon, I'd never seen it.

The Leader, or Brad, ran the entire camp with an iron fist to ensure that none of the other criminals tried taking advantage of the large amount of black-market wealth they were sat on or otherwise cause disruption in the camp. He was also the one who had the majority of contact with the members of their organisation who worked off the island, arranging where the Pokemon went and what type of Pokemon would get the most money in different regions. Basically, his role was to make sure the paperwork and finances were all in order. Brad had six Pokemon which he regularly used to capture wild Pokemon or used to help Gary control the captive Pokemon: Dodrio, Kangaskhan, Hitmonchan, Charizard, Golem and Trevenant. The six Pokemon were also used to bring his fellow criminals into line since they were stronger than any of the others, even Gary's.

James and Tyler were the breeders of the camp. The two men had somehow created a system to forcible bread unwilling Pokemon in order to get the desired species offspring with the possibility of Egg Moves and Hidden Ability. They also had the criminal's Pokemon breading with the wild Pokemon if they didn't have an appropriate 'stud' in the camp at the time. They were also the ones responsible for the egg care and maintenance, and the health of the Pokemon in their first three weeks before being handed over to Gary. Of course, there was also the times when the eggs would be taken and sold as they were since some people wanted to bond with the Pokemon upon the hatching of the egg. Each of the breeders had four Pokemon which were the weakest of the criminals since they didn't need strong Pokemon in their role at camp. James had a Typhlosion, Camerupt, Emboar and Braixen, while Tyler had a Golduck, Dewgong, Feraligatr and Walrein.

The other, full time, members of the camp didn't seem to have a particular named role and instead seem to mostly help out with the overall Pokemon control and capturing. There was Yan, Danial, Ajay, Dexter and Adam. Adam and Ajay were the cruellest of the five, spending lots of time with Gary and needlessly causing harm whereas Gary normally only hurt the Pokemon when he had a purpose. Adam had a Marowak and Piloswine, while Ajay had a Gastrodon and Rhydon. Danial and Dexter were mostly responsible for maintaining the enclosures and cages as and when necessary, but the rest of their time seemed to be exploring the island and surrounding sea to get even more wild Pokemon because it was harder to import from other islands. Danial had a Alolan Sandshrew, Poliwrath, Quagsire, Parasect, Pinsir, Magneton, Meganium and Alolan Persian. Dexter had a Sneasel, Starmie, Scyther, Electabuzz, Vileplume, Exeggutor and Murkrow. Of all the criminals at the camp, Dexter and Danial had the most diverse Pokemon team because they'd come from a background of Pokemon Trainers.

Yan seemed to be the meekest criminal at the camp, and was the only one who refused to acknowledge my presents, since to acknowledge me was to then respond negatively in some manner. This low level of morality was seen in his most regular role of 'health/healer' for the Pokemon to ensure that they got the best value for money; he never did anything to harm the Pokemon, preferring to simple have Hypnotism used when he was tending to or seeing a Pokemon. On his team he had a Hypno, Medicham, Grumpig and Florges. I'd managed to work out that before becoming a criminal, Yan had been training to be a Pokemon Doctor in order to work under a Nurse Joy in a large city.

In the time I was forced to remain at the camp, I'd been regulated to 'housekeeper'. It was my job to ensure that everyone and everything was fed three times a day, that the tents and buildings were clean, that clothes were washed and dried, and I also groomed those 'failure' Pokemon who would be sold as pets to the rich. They felt that the meek, non-combative Pokemon weren't worth their time, and they definitely weren't going to spend time making sure they 'look' presentable to 'the rich and useless' as they call those who get Pokemon just to show off. Unless I was off use or had done something wrong – like not gotten their food out on time or to an 'acceptable' standard – I was mostly viewed as a nuisance by the majority of the criminals and so I did my best to learn how to become invisible to them so as to avoid punishments.

Gary was the only one who didn't actively just allow me to slip below his notice, because he felt that I was too gentle and kind to the Pokemon. As far as Gary was concerned, if I slipped the Pokemon extra food, was gentle in the way I held them when I was allowed to do so or did something else that I considered to be the bare minimum of care and respect that Pokemon deserved, and he caught me he would resort to using his breaking and punishment tactics. He wanted to turn me into something like him, or one of the other criminal members of camp, so that I could start helping them earn money by exploiting Pokemon. That was why he had allowed my mother to fob me off on him.

As the island hadn't had a human settlement on it before the criminals moved in, and they were careful not to over poach the area, there was still lots of wild Pokemon on the island. Many years ago, Lucario had come to live on the island and as the strongest and oldest wild Pokemon he took it on himself to do what he could to protect as many as he could from the criminals. Despite being so strong, Lucario was still outnumbered and didn't have the support of strong Pokemon who could fight beside him, and so he hadn't been able to chase out the invaders. However, he had reached out to me when I was brought to the island and we became friends; joined in our collective desire to protect the Pokemon and stop the criminals.

Lucario had been able to easily reach out to me, and we were able to connect at a distance, because I was an Aura Adapt. Over the years, he taught me how to access Aura with a focus on teaching me how to harness and use healing Aura so that I could help save as many Pokemon as I could – particularly the young Pokemon or newly captured wild Pokemon who were easier to break out and get to Lucario but only if they were physically capable of movement. I had to be careful which ones I helped to escape to Lucario so that suspicion didn't full upon me, because if they knew I was helping to facilitate the escape of Pokemon I would be killed immediately and without question.

Being able to access Aura also meant that the young and injured/pregnant Pokemon were less wary around me, which meant the criminals started allowing me to help with the caring for Pokemon who were going into labour to ensure the greatest number of eggs survived along with the mother.

When I was eight, I grew unhealthily close to a Ninetales who had been forced to bread with several of the criminals Pokemon in an attempt at producing a powerful Vulpix. The Ninetales was powerful in her own right, so they were hoping that also having a powerful father would lead to a powerful off spring. She'd already been forced to deliver four clutches of eggs before, of which seven of their number had swiftly been sent into the fighting rings, another two had been given to 'Trainers' while the last was sold as a pet after being classed as a failure. They wanted at least half of the latest clutch to be fighters. The poachers operated under the theory that if less than half was fighters then Ninetales would not be capable of producing anymore strong Pokemon considering how close together she'd been forced to carry the clutches, and it would no longer be necessary to spend time containing and caring for her. She'd already lasted longer than most 'bred' Pokemon who either died after the second or third clutch or were killed after producing an unsatisfactory first clutch.

I did what I could to make sure that Ninetales received as much care as I could give to ensure the best health for her and her children as possible, unable to face the possibility of seeing her die like I had so many other Pokemon. I snuck her extra food, snuck berries into her standard food, maintained a fire as close to her cage as I could, distracting the criminals from paying attention to her and stopping any unattended captured Pokemon from getting close to her. When I could get close enough to gain physical contact, I'd use some healing Aura in order to help support Ninetales strength and the growth of the children, since she was struggling with energy with this latest round. This then led to my own deterioration in physical health, but I couldn't give up because Ninetales hadn't given up despite everything.

"Girl, the Ninetales has gone into labour." Gary's voice shouted through the kitchen causing me to instinctively flinch.

I'd been making dinner for the camp, and he regularly got pissed at me when I wasn't quick enough to make food, so hearing his voice before I was finished led to the instinctive reaction having been expecting some kind of physical reprimand. As soon as his words registered, I turned off the flame, grabbed the bag which was set up previously for this purpose, and headed to the cage where Ninetales was being kept.

As she was now in labour, they couldn't restrain her, or knock her unconscious unless as a last resort, and I was the only person she would let close without barbequing them. The healthy delivering of the eggs was the priority, while Ninetales survival was optional at this point, which meant if I couldn't help her then Yan would knock her out and deliver the eggs which would inevitably result in Ninetale's death as it always did when he used this delivery method.

When I got to the cage, the doors were open and one of the breeders had placed a collar around Ninetales to stop her from getting away. She was crying out in pain and shooting Flamethrowers at anyone who got within five metres of her.

"Get the eggs, then get away." Gary snarled, grabbing my arm and throwing me into the cage without any care for my safety.

Fortunately, Ninetales recognised me; she growled fiercely instead of shooting a blast of fire into my face, but I could see the suppressed flames licking around her clenched jaw. I had a burn down my left leg from the last time she'd gone into labour and she hadn't recognised me in time, so I was grateful that this time she had more control of herself. Ninetales knew well that I was the only person in this horrible place who cared not only for her health, but for the health and future of her children. I'd be doing everything I could to get as many of her children to Lucario as I could this time, especially since she feared she wasn't strong enough to have nourished the entire clutch to full strength and growth.

"It's okay, I'm here." I gentle rubbed her muzzle before slowly moving down her neck and to her stomach. I didn't want to be triggering her protective instincts.

The labour was coming on quickly, Ninetale's contractions were very close together causing near continuous growls of pain. Although I'd helped more Pokemon through the process of labour than I was comfortable with, I was grateful that Ninetales was experienced with the process so that my role was reduced to simple easing pain, providing comfort and being there to help deliver the eggs in the event of complications.

Using my body to hide my hand, and Ninetale's body, from the breeders who might be paying attention, I started channelling healing Aura into Ninetales in order to relax Ninetales muscles and ease the pain. Healing Aura was a complicated internal use of Aura where I channelled my own strength through contact into another, which caused a slight blue glow at the point of contact. Relaxing the muscles, but still allowing them to contract, made it easier for Ninetales to push the eggs from her body.

I kept whispering smoothing words to Ninetales as I continued to help ease her pain.

Over the next hour, Ninetales pushed out four eggs of proper size, and they were all letting of a warmth which indicated they were all viable. I cleaned the mucus off the eggs and carefully placed them inside the incubators which could hold two eggs each. The Incubators had been pushed into the cage quite early on in the process by Yan who had then quickly retreated when a particularly powerful contraction had caused Ninetales to release a Flamethrower in his direction. The last egg Ninetales had difficulty getting out, exhausted from not only getting out the first four, but also from her captivity. A normal clutch of eggs from a Ninetales is between three and four eggs, so it was a little abnormal for her to be carrying five and she was struggling to push through.

"Come on Ninetales, just one more, than you can rest." I said encouragingly.

I'd been forced to stop using healing Aura to calm and relax the muscle after the second egg otherwise I would have exhausted myself. If she couldn't do this on her own, I was going to have to risk it and try and use some more healing Aura. I was young still and so didn't have access to a lot of energy yet, and so was limited in what I can do and for how long. Especially when my physical body wasn't in a strong condition – physical, spiritual and Aura were all connected. I'd now reached the limited of my Aura strength until my physical well-being improved, although I could learn more control and other Aura skills beyond what Lucario had been able to instruct me on so far.

"Nine!" Ninetales yelled out her pain, anger and relief as she pushed out the last egg before collapsing in exhaustion. The egg, unlike all the others, was too small. But it was warm and viable. Despite being alive, this wouldn't matter to James and Tyler. The egg was too small to be worth the effort of caring for it and so it would be killed.

Carefully lifting the egg, I cleaned off the mucus and showed it to Ninetales who noised it sadly and let out a mournful noise. She knew what happened to eggs who were runts. Her other children had the chance of living a decent life as pets, if they weren't assigned to the fighting rings, and even than there was a chance of them living long lives if they were good fighters. This egg didn't have a chance of survival.

"I'll try and get the egg to Lucario, I promise." I said softly, wrapping the egg in the dirty towels so I could hide it. If I didn't leave the cage now that Ninetales had stopped giving birth, they'd come in and I wouldn't have a chance at saving this egg.

I brought the towels to the edge of the cage before bringing out the incubators. I barely had time to step out of the cage before the incubators were snatched out of my arms.

"Where's the other one?" Gary demanded, passing the incubators onto the stoic James. Yan had been able to determine that Ninetales was carrying five eggs, so Gary was expecting me to leave the cage with five eggs. If I didn't, he'd jump on the opportunity to force the duty of seeing to births back onto Yan since he felt that I wasn't broken enough to be responsible for something so important.

"It wasn't viable." I nodded to the pile of towels which were crumbled outside of the cage and I didn't' dare pick up now that my hands were free. "I was about to take it to the incinerator."

"You lying to me?" Gary demanded, roughly yanking my hair back by the nap of my neck so he could look me in the eye. One of the first things he'd made clear was that he looked people in the eyes so that he could 'tell' when they were lying. I was fortunate that this 'skill' didn't seem to work accurately on me and, if I was careful enough, I could successfully lie.

"No sir. Never, sir."

I could feel my heart pounding fearfully in my chest, but I made sure to maintain eye contact and keep my face blank. A life depended on my ability to deceive this man, and the hope that he was too distracted to be distrustful of me.

"Get those blankets in the wash quickly." Gary violently released my hair, pushing me down towards to the blankets.

"Do you want me to finish the dinner?" I questioned, staying on my knees where I'd fallen, eyes down as I submissively gathered up the blankets and runt egg.

"You have thirty minutes before we expect it on the table." Gary growled angrily, half turning before he paused. "And remember, you still need to clip the Swellows before full darkness."

With this final instruction, he marched off. I made sure not to move from my knelling position until after he'd reached the tents. Only once he was truly gone did I hastily clamber to my feet and head to the incinerator and washing building. I couldn't afford to be late with dinner, especially when clipping the Swellows was a minor punishment in comparison to what would happen if I didn't complete either duty that night.

Putting the incinerator at a temperature of 670 Fahrenheit, I placed the egg in the cupboard under the fire. As Vulpix was a fire type, the egg needed to be kept warm and I couldn't keep it near my body or in an incubator so the fire would have to do until I could get the egg to Lucario where he would protect it. The fire types he was with would be able to look after it and encourage the inner-flame to continue burning until it was strong enough to sustain itself in the week before it hatches.

Once the clothes were in the wash and the egg was safe, I went about completing my chores. If dinner was too late, it wasn't just Gary who would punish me. They would make an exception because of the birth of the Vulpix eggs, but they wouldn't allow the exception to stand for much longer now that the eggs were out. These men got very angry when they didn't get food, and they couldn't take their anger out on the Pokemon as easily as they could me due to the scaring that they always left.

Pokemon stories... I struggle with writing these... I've written two chapters in the last two months and I do have plans for the next chapter but it will take longer. Probably won't have Chapter Twenty five written and posted until April.
