Chapter 10: Refill
Nessie's POV
My grandfather barely examined me for a second before diagnosing me with a severe sinus infection. He was fascinated by the fact that I could get sick at all. I didn't understand what all the fuss was about really. Getting sick was overrated.
The only good thing is now I knew what kind of medicines were safe for me to take while I was pregnant. Then my mom drove me home and insisted that I get some rest.
One thing was for sure. My mom would always be overprotective of me no matter what. I couldn't rest though. I was way too alert for that. My mind was racing. I couldn't stop thinking about the missing pills.
I sighed and got out of bed. I needed to get them replaced as soon as possible. Since I was home from school and also ditching work today I might as well see Dr. Brown.
I grabbed my car keys and headed out of the house. I almost had a heart attack when I saw Jacob standing in my driveway.
"Where are you going?" he asked me.
"What are you doing here standing in my driveway?" I was still trying to calm down my racing heart.
He smiled. "answering a question with a question. Classic,"
I rolled my eyes. "I was on my way to see a doctor," I said.
"I thought you saw Carlisle this morning?" he asked curiously.
"It's not Carlisle that I'm seeing. It's Dr. Brown. The doctor who gives me the turning human pills,"
"Oh. Can I come with you?"
"Sure but it's probably going to be a very boring trip,"
He shook his head in disagreement. "I'm actually curious to meet this once a vampire doctor,"
I chuckled at the way that he worded it. My heart fluttered when he grabbed my hand. Everything always felt so right when Jacob was around. "I missed you Jacob. Where have you been the last few days?"
"To be honest I was a little worried that you'd be really mad at me when you saw me again,"
I furrowed my eyebrows in mystified confusion. "Why would I ever be mad at you?"
"Because I went against your wishes and told the Cullens everything,"
I sighed. "Oh. Yeah. That. Well I was mad about that but not anymore. I realized it was pretty stupid of me to think you'd actually agree to do that for me,"
"Oh here let me drive. I know you're not feeling all that well,"
I smiled. "You're really sweet Jacob but where is your car?"
"I don't have one at the moment. I've been a wolf for the last 13 years, remember?"
"Oh, right," I blushed.
"But let me drive you in your car. That's what I meant,"
"Okay if you really want to. Here are the keys,"
Jacob sat in the driver's seat looking perplexed. "Where do I enter the key?"
I laughed. "You don't enter the key anymore. You just push this button right here to start the car,"
He shook his head. "First text messages on watches and now pushing buttons to start cars,"
I winced when the baby kicked me harder than usual.
"What's wrong?" he asked me immediately worried.
"It's nothing. Baby just kicked a little hard that's all,"
He sighed. "I heard about what happened to you. It made me so angry I couldn't calm down enough to change back for a full day,"
"Did my dad tell you who he thinks did it?"
"He told me who did do it. Renesmee why don't you believe your father? He's a mind reader for Chris sakes. I know you don't want to believe that your own friends are monsters but your father wouldn't lie to you about something like that,"
I took a deep breath. "You're the second person who has told me that today,"
"Well maybe you should listen then,"
I shook my head. "Anyway I'll tell you how to get there,"
We didn't broach the subject of my rape again. "Is it still weird for you to be human again?" I asked.
"A little," he admitted. "Walking on two feet. Talking. The whole human thing is weird to me now,"
"You'll get used to it,"
"I don't know. This whole world seems sp foreign to me now. Turn into a wild wolf for thirteen years and you miss so much. I mean, since when do cars have all these screens inside of them? What even is all of this?"
"Touchscreens. If you're amazed by all of this just wait until I introduce you to Alexa,"
"Who is Alexa?"
I laughed.
"What's so funny?"
"You've got a lot to learn. That's all,"
"and you have a very strange sense of humor," he shot back.
"anyway we're here. Just turn right over there and that'll take you straight to the parking lot,"
The parking lot was a lot more full than it normally was. The line to check in was even longer. It wasn't until an hour later that I was finally called.
Jacob got up to come with me. "She'll be ready for you in just a minute. She's finishing up with another patient right now,"
Not even two minutes later that she knocked on the door and came. "Nessie I'm surprised to see you back here already. Who is your friend?"
"Oh this is an old friend of mine Jacob. He's a werewolf,"
She looked startled. "A werewolf?"
"and you must be the bloodsucker turned human I've heard so much about,"
"Jacob is an old friend of mine from before. Anyway I'm here because half of my pills suddenly went missing last night and I thought it best to get them replaced as soon as possible,"
"Half of your pills just went missing?"
"Yeah I swear I don't know what happened,"
"Okay I'll give you some more right now. But be careful with them. Anyways I wish I could stay and keep talking but we're a little understaffed right now. Dr. Martin and Dr. Lawrence quit and until we can find replacements we're taking on all of their appointments,"
"Oh wow that sucks. I hope you get some help soon,"
"Yeah hopefully but unfortunately the only people applying are not even remotely qualified to be a physician,"
"Hey maybe you should tell Carlisle to apply," Jacob suggested.
I shook my head. "I don't think my family plans on staying long,"
"Did you say Carlisle?" Dr. Brown asked me. "There's a name I haven't heard in a hundred years. I knew a Carlisle a hundred years ago,"
"You did?" I asked.
"Yeah I did. I owe my whole life's work to him really. I've always loved science and medicine. But back in 1900 when I it wasn't exactly socially acceptable for a woman to pursue a career in science or medicine. I was a 20 year old human. Well, human for the first tims I should say as I wasn't turned until several years later. Anyway so when I was accepted into a medical school it was nothing short of a miracle. But I was the only woman in a class of men. They gave me such a hard time about it. It was so bad that I seriously thought about quitting school. I would've had it not been for Carlisle. He was my professor and he took me under his wing. I remember him telling me I see great potential in you. It would be a waste for you to give up now when you've come so far. Women such as yourself have a lot to offer the world. It's sad that society doesn't value women as much as men. You're a smart and talented young lady. Don't give up on your dreams now no matter what,"
"How can you still remember that all these years later?" I asked her.
"Because that moment was a huge turning point in my life. He took me under his wing and taught me everything he knew about medicine. I would've given up on science and medicine right then and there," she said.
"Wow that's amazing,"
"Yeah Dr. Carlisle Cullen was an amazing man. I wish I knew what became of him. He was an amazing mentor,"
