IT'S CHANGED (SNILY)

CHAPTER 10 Father

After all the content, you need to endure some contempt too. With the same phrase in mind, he stood facing the dingy quarters, he was expected to call home. Though he never saw it that way. The grass around the house was overly-grown that it covered half his shins. Of course, now when he was here, the work belonged to him.

He sighed. He had to step inside, as much as he despised it. He wanted no more than to sit in the Evans' car once more and pray for the journey to never get completed. He sighed again and opened the door of the house, which almost seemed to be unhinged from the doorframe. He snorted, as if he expected any better from his parents.

He resolved that he would go straight to his room without making a single sound and be careful when walking on the stairs, lest making any unwanted noise.

He came inside, closing the door behind. He noticed his father's jacket hanging on a hook. Perhaps, he didn't remember that Severus was coming that day, else he would have never hanged the jacket in which he kept money.

Severus taking the hint that Merlin wanted to help him, pocketed all the money he got from the jacket. From where did his father get so much money? Severus could work on that money for the entire summer vacations, but then his expenses were not much.

He froze startled, when a thrashing voice came from upstairs, accompanied by a loud cry, "Tobias!"

His heart began beating faster and it filled with terror. What the hell were his parents doing now?!

He left his trunk on the door and ran to the stairs. He had been just half-way there when he saw his father gripping his mother tightly by the arms. A flower vase laid broken on the floor; the glass shattered in all directions. He froze there, unable to even move an inch.

"Tobias… Tobias, stop it, why-" his mother cried, but stopped as soon as she saw Severus standing there. Tears were streaming down her face while she begged her husband to stop. Severus flinched at the sight.

"Now the boy's 'ere too… ya're not stayin' 'ere for long anyways" Tobias' drunken eyes met Severus', sending another wave of terror course through his veins.

Soon coming to his senses, he took his wand out and pointed it on Tobias.

"Leave her alone or else a simple spell can kill you" he snarled, though his heart was hammering on his rib cage.

Tobias merely laughed. "Do you think I don' know tha' yar fuckin' wand-wavin' is not allowed 'ere?"

"It's allowed in self-defense, you fool" he hissed.

Rage burned in Tobias' eyes and he took a step forward towards Severus, who in turn sub-consciously took a step backwards.

Eileen grabbed one of Tobias' hands. "Toby, Toby, please… he's still a boy… don't do anything to him. Please. He is my child…" she begged, but Tobias shoved her back angrily.

"Child!" he mocked and laughed cruelly. "He'll become a man soon but still hiding behind mummy, aren' ya?"

"Leave. Mother. Alone!" Severus yelled.

Tobias ignored him totally and looked at Eileen. "Ya love 'im, don' ya?"

Eileen didn't reply but her filled with the horrific anticipation of what was her husband going to do.

"Ya started it, I'll finish" he stepped almost too fast for Severus to comprehend and took his collar.

The smell of alcohol burned in Severus' nostrils, making him want to sick up. His father shook his scrawny frame in a single blow and he staggered behind on the stairs, trying to stand straight up-right.

"Tobias please, leave him… please, he is just a child" Eileen stood up and came behind Tobias, begging for her child again.

Before Severus could do anything, a strong punch met his jaw and his entire skull throbbed in agony. His eyes watered, but he didn't utter a word.

"Tobias… stop it, you are hurting him" Eileen shrieked and tears leaked from her eyes.

Tobias opened his mouth and the strong smell of alcohol made Severus dizzy. "No, ya bitch, I'm hurtin' ya" he laughed.

Kicks and punches met Severus' shins and ribs, sending waves of agony course through his body and a moan escaped his lips. Tobias smiled smugly and appeared satisfied with himself.

"Tobias please, leave him alone… you are hurting him so bad" Eileen sank to the ground, sobbing.

"Yes, I'm an' he deserves it" Tobias pulled Severus by his collar and threw him out of the house, kicking his belongings and his wand on top of him. "Ya are old enough to work. Go an' don' come back" he slammed the door.

Severus didn't try to get up for a moment, he touched his jaw and moaned. His father was a fucking bastard and now he had kicked him out of the house. Where was he supposed to go? Tears formed in his eyes, for the first time realizing how small he was in this huge world. He brushed them away irritatingly. Anywhere was better than living with his father.

At least he had all his things with himself. He never left anything in that hell of a house. His all possessions were safe in his trunk, lying beside him. His mother's old trunk rather. He was lucky that her mother had her old textbooks in an extended pocket of the trunk, she made when she was young and a student herself.

He was shocked realizing how many things were there in his trunk, though most of it were just books.

He got up from the floor, moaning, all bloody and bruised. He took his trunk, school bag and picked his wand from the floor, pocketing it. He paused and looked back to the house just to wonder if he should take his mother with him. But instantly dismissed the idea. He had no place to go, where is he going to take his mother too? He hoped that monster would leave her mother alone.

He walked through the street, weighing his options, then shook his head discerning that he didn't have many. So, he decided to go to the only place he went to escape the hell-hole.

He walked to park, where he met Lily. He smiled to himself. He at least had good memories of this place. Just a single summer vacation or two months or nine weeks or sixty-one days or one thousand four hundred and sixty-four hours or some ridiculous number of minutes. He sighed. Surely this isn't going feel this long as much it seemed. He just to survive the arduous vacation and the worst part of the year is over. And he needed to do it. He had to do this. Yes. Stop being so dramatic, Snape, he chided himself mentally. It's not that easy.

But he had Lily this time and -how can he forget- money.

He sat on a bench and pulled his school cloak from his trunk and a book to keep himself busy. His stomach growled but he ignored it just as he did almost every summer vacations. He could save a huge part of his money if he only had one meal a day and that was enough.

He dozed off on the uncomfortable park bench but away from his father, he had a fine sleep.

*Page Break*

The summers weren't that bad. Okay. If he only had stopped consoling himself with this statement for the entire morning and tried to make the reality somehow appear better. He ate a beef sandwich, he bought for lunch that day. It tasted good and was loaded so, it filled his stomach quite thoroughly.

He had used the public bathroom in the area in the morning. And that was something he would call an awful experience. Though it was way cleaner than years ago, but still it had a long way of improvisation to be called satisfactory. He scrunched his nose in remembrance.

He looked down at the open book in his lap. Lily gave it to him. He smiled. He initially refused to take it but she had forcefully stuffed it into his book bag. He had to admit it that the book was of his taste. Lily knew him well. Mystery novels with a good part allotted to smut. He smirked. He was a teenager after all. But this was for pure academic purposes. He told himself.

He dropped his head back to look at the sky when he saw a flash of red near the tree. His heart leaped in his throat for a second. Was it Lily? He hastily opened his bag, pulled the invisibility cloak out and wrapped it on his trunk, gripping one of the corners under one of his feet, so that he knows where it is and also to ensure that the cloak doesn't fly away.

He didn't want Lily to know that he was kicked out of the house on the first day of returning there. He would look like such a fool. He knew that she understood what was the situation there was like. He knew she suspected severe abuse, that he mostly dismissed by stating that he was merely clumsy, though he was far from it. One can't be good at potions if clumsy. She never bought it but halted her comments and questions, he was thankful for.

Something obstructed his view and all he could see was black. He got startled. Then understood and smiled.

"Lily, I know it's you"

She removed her hands and took a seat beside him on the bench. He looked at her, smiling, taking in every feature of her bright face that soon changed into one of horror. He frowned and looked back. What did she see? His heart beat paced. Were there any Death-Eaters? He gripped his wand tightly, lest he slip it somewhere. He was fully prepared for a Death-Eater to show up when he felt a gentle hand on his cheek. He flinched by the pain that shot by the bruise on his jaw.

He turned to look at her. Oh. He realized. There was no Death-Eater. She had seen his face. Bruised. He felt mortified, only he had done something to hide those bruises. Her face was a mixture of sympathy and anger.

"He did that to you again" It wasn't a question and he knew that she knew. No need to make excuses. They weren't kids anymore.

He sighed. "Yes" he nodded. "But it's fine, Lily, it doesn't hurt anymore, it's gone numb" he added, didn't want her to worry.

Her eyes flashed with rage and this time directed at him. He flinched. What did he do now?

"You think I am blind, do you?" her growled.

"Lily, what-"

"You think I am blind!" she practically yelled, seeming totally perfect for the house she was in.

"Lily, I-" he tried, but was cut yet again.

"Severus, I saw you flinch on my touch" she grounded. "What would you say about that?"

"What do you want me to say, Lily?" he sounded exhausted.

She ignored him. "You will wait here for me to return and don't run away" she said standing up and walking away.

"Lily, I am absolutely fine. Don't bother. It doesn't even hurt" he called out behind her.

"I will be the judge of that. And dare you leave that bench" she shouted back.

He leaned back in the bench. Trust his fate to ruin everything. It was all his father's fault. He wanted to kick his trunk but he restrained himself. More injuries weren't going help. He sighed in relief that Lily didn't know about him being kicked out of the house. Merlin, she would drag him to her house, he just knew it. He would love to stay at the Evans' too, but he didn't want to become a bother to Mr. and Mrs. Evans. They both have been so kind to him till now, what if his burden repulsed them from him. The person who wasn't loved by his own parents, why would he be loved by others.

He sighed. After a few minutes Lily came with her first aid kit and an ice pad. She sat beside him, figuring out what all to use. She kept on looking at him to view the length of his injuries.

"Pull your trouser legs up, Severus" she said passively. Why was she insisting on calling him by his entire name?

"It's fine, Lily. I got a bruise only on my face" he tried to assure her.

She glared. "Please do as I said, Severus"

"Lily, you are totally being absurd, there's no-"

Before he could complete the sentence, Lily got up and knelt right in front of him, taking his foot into her hands. He jerked back, but she kept her face passive.

"What do you think you are doing, Lily?" his irritation growing now.

"I asked you to do it, but as we see your stubbornness overrules every conscience, I am more than capable of doing so" she stood up and crossed her arms across her chest. "And if I can't, Mum definitely will be" she smirked on his horror-struck face.

He was touched. He was touched by her care and concern. He knew he always took the worst moment to feel this way, but well, he did. A blossoming warmth in his chest could comply him to do anything, Lily asked now. He smiled.

She frowned. "You think I am funny?" she grumbled, taking the offence.

He shook his head, took her hand, rounded her and sat her beside him. Then, pulled his trouser leg up, just enough to show his bruised and swelled shin. She did not comment or make nay noise but her eyes conveyed that she was sad for what happened. She was aware that she couldn't do anything for what he went through.

She kept the ice pack on his shin gently, but he hissed with pain, before clamping his mouth shut.

She looked away. "You know, when I'll become the Minister for Magic, I'll get new provisions for the wizarding children who has stupid drunken fathers" her voice cracked.

"Just like when you'll become the Muggle Prime Minister and lift prices from your favorite candy, as you said when we were kids" he tried to joke, but it seemed she wasn't in the mood.

"Severus, shut up with your stupid jokes, they are not making me laugh" she handed him a pill. "Take this, it's a pain killer" she said, daring him to retort.

He took it without a word.

"First Potter and his gang, then me getting possessed, then the Death-Eaters and the snake and now his father" she was muttering something under her breath, Severus had to strain his ear to listen. "Will he ever get rest from all this shit going on?"

Merlin, Lily. Sweet, Lily. Kind, Lily. He so loved her.

"Thank you, Lily" it came out too heart-felt for his liking.

She turned to him and was about to throw her arms around him when she paused looking at his face, ready to half-wince.

She instead crossed her arms on her chest and gave him a hard questioning glance.

"What?" he asked.

"Pull your shirt over" she demanded.

His eyes widened. Definitely not. Fine. He just had to tell her, but not show. He cleared his throat.

"I-I have a bruise on my ribs" he cleared his throat again. "Sorry" he muttered, looking at her face.

"Fine. If you want to play this stupid game. Where else?"

"No, nowhere else"

"I'll get more ice packs for you then" she got up and left.

He sighed. She came back later with more ointments and ice packs for him and handed them to him.

For the next week she would come at the same time to check on him. She on some occasions invited him to her home for dinner and completing homework together and of course having their time chatting and swearing about people they hated. He hesitated on the outside, but he was actually thrilled by every idea of spending time with her. Mr. and Mrs. Evans always seemed pleased at his sight. He liked it. At least someone was pleased to have him around them apart from Lily and his friends. While he better not comment on Petunia.

So, the first week of the vacations wasn't that bad, if takes out the visits to the public bathroom. They would always remain dreadful.

*Page Break*

He truly hadn't been at that the house for almost an entire week. Shouldn't he once go and check on his mother? He hadn't seen her for almost ten months and now he at least wanted to ask how she was. Though, he knew what the answer was.

So, he found himself standing in front of the house he never wanted to be in. It was late afternoon; his father wouldn't be there by now. He walked inside and closed the door slowly behind him.

"Mother…" he called out carefully. What if that bastard was there? "Mother…" he repeated.

"Severus… is that you?" an anxious vice met him.

"Yes, mother" he came to the kitchen. Fortunately, his father wasn't home.

Eileen Snape nee Prince stood there facing him. All the pride on her face of being the heiress of an ancient and noble house of Purebloods had gone long ago, leaving deep scars and worry. The only reason. Tobias Snape. Rage boiled in him but he pushed it down. He was here to meet his mother, so he wouldn't think about that madman.

His mother practically ran to him and cupped his face. Tears dripping down her face.

"My child…" she kissed his forehead. "Where did you go, when your father…?"

"I am fine, mother and safe. No need to worry about me" he assured her.

She hugged him. "I am sorry, Severus. I never wanted this for you" she sobbed. "It just…" she broke.

"Mother, Mum, Mum. Its fine, now. How are you?" he pulled away. "Did he beat you again?"

"No, he didn't" she sighed. "I have left magic; you are learning it. That is why he is so irritated by you"

"Irritated?!" an angry frown taking its lead on his face. "He is not irritated by me! He despises my mere existence!"

"Severus-"

She was cut, by a load thump at the door. They both looked at each other with wide eyes and before any of them could do anything, Tobias Snape had made his way till the kitchen.

Tobias' eyes landed on his son and his drunken eyes flashed with fury. He dropped the alcohol bottles he was carrying and lashed out on Severus.

"'ow did ya step into my 'ouse again, ya little whelp" he threw Severus to the floor before he could do anything. He hissed in pain. The jerk from the fall was intense, he brought his hands to the back of his head. He wasn't bleeding but it was swollen.

"TOBIAS!" Eileen shrieked. "Leave him alone, Tobias. He just came here to see me. He'll leave" she tried to drag her husband from her son's side, but even in his drunken state he stood rigidly there, instead shoved her off with a forceful slap on her face.

"Mum… I'll go… don't do… anything to her" Severus hissed through clenched teeth. Everything blurred up after then.

A sudden blow in his ribs knocked all the air out of his lungs.

"Take that… Take that" Tobias kicked him in the ribs, causing him cough violently and gasp for air.

"Tobias, he has done nothing to you" Mother! He opened his eyes only to see, his father banging her head on the table.

He wanted to get up, wanted to see if she was alright, but no words escaped his mouth other than low moans.

A punch on his lips. It made him dizzy. The blood dripped down his jaws.

"Tobias, for Merlin's sake stop…" his mother pleaded, he couldn't see her, but it stopped his father.

Severus waited for the next kick but it never came. He pressed his palms on the floor, trying it sit up and then supposedly run away.

He opened his eyes to see his father's malicious eyes staring at him. In the speed everything was going on, increased ten times. And the most horrific.

He saw his father's eyes coming closer to his face. A hand on his hip. He felt his father's hand on the waistband of his trousers and underwear, pulling them down. He had almost pulled it down before realization had dawned to Severus.

He jolted up, with all the adrenaline flowing through his body, he kicked his knee in his father's groin and ran away from the house, didn't even stop to see Tobias shrink at the blow or realize any pain he himself was feeling.

He didn't stop until he reached the park bench where he had lived for all those days. He laid there all bloodied and battered, pulled the cloak till his neck.

Why did he get such a father? Why him? He was about to rape his only son? He shut his eyes tight shut. He didn't want to think about it.

He only went to see his mother. What was wrong with that? He loved his mother. Couldn't he just meet her like a normal child would. Hug her, kiss her, love her.

Why would his mother just not leave that monster? Now she was there and he had means of knowing if she was safe. He hoped she was.

He hoped his father die. He wanted him to hurt. He wanted it with every fiber of his being.

His muscles ached, he groaned but for the greater part, ignored them. He clutched the cloak closer and sleep or unconscious came soon to him. He was grateful for that. He hated such a life.

*Page Break*

He rolled over and groaned at the feeble pain in his body. Why did he hurt? Wait! He remembered. He went to the house… met his mother… his father beat him… his father almost -Why did he not forget that memory? - raped him…

He wanted it to vanish. He wished to die. Why did he wake up? He brought a hand to his lip. He frowned; it didn't hurt that bad. Why? His ribs weren't hurting that bad even. How?

He slowly touched his torso. There was something cold. What was happening?

His eyes shot open and he was met by two emerald orbs, staring back at him.

Lily…

He blinked his eyes a few times, cleared his view, if could be dreaming. He turned to see if Lily was still there, and found her there. She sat on the grass beside his bench, cross legged, staring straight at him.

"You feel alright?" she asked with a wry smile.

"Lily…" he could manage no more than that.

"You think, you can sit?" He nodded. "Your hip must be hurting because you were lying over it, but I reckon it would be fine enough" she got up and helped him sit up.

Yes, his hip hurt a little but he managed to sit straight leaning his back on the bench, cross legged and wincing at his sore muscles. His eyes fell on his trunk and bag. They weren't covered. Damn!

Lily seemed to have seen it. "Mind to tell me for how many days have you been living here and covering your trunk with the invisibility cloak?" she raised an eyebrow at him.

No need to lie or make an excuse. Lily already knew. "One week" he answered passively.

She pursed her lips. "And I believe I am not a good friend enough that you can share it with me" she took a seat beside him.

"No, No. Lily, absolutely not. It was just that I didn't want to be a bother" he said hastily, leaving the 'and didn't want you to think I am weaker than a defenseless muggle', he sneered at himself.

"Bother!" she said calmly. "I told you, you never were one, but only if you paid any heed to what I say" she shook her head.

"Lily, I am sorry"

"Don't be, Severus" she took his hand into hers, rubbing her thumb on his pale knuckles. "I would never really be able to understand what happens in that house, but I want to. I want to help you" she looked straight in his eyes. "And you are not weak, Severus, never think that. You endured everything without a single complain"

"Never has anyone said that to me" he whispered; afraid she'll notice the earthquake in his voice.

Lily smiled. "Then you haven't met any sensible humans yet and I am sorry to have not said that before" she sobered again. "What happened yesterday?" she asked carefully.

He looked at his lap and Lily inched closer to him, wrapping one arm around his shoulders, providing more comfort than she knew.

"I… went to see Mum, last afternoon, almost evening. I hadn't talked to her since last summer vacations other than the occasional letters. Just wanted to talk to her once, tell her about school…" he choked. Lily guided his head on her shoulder.

"Then?" she forced despite his inability to do so, she had to know what happened.

He took a deep breath. "My father came after sometime… he shoved me to the ground and then kicked me in the ribs, it continued for some time" he paused, taking in the smell of Lily's hair, they were a nice distraction from tearing up remembering everything that happened.

He continued. "She shoved Mum and she hit her head on the table… but she still pleaded him not beat me… he stopped" his voice cracked. Tears formed in his eyes. "He- he kep-kept a hand on my… tried to p-pull my- my…" he wrapped his arms around Lily, tears dripping down his face and seeping into her shirt.

Lily's face struck with horror. How can someone do that? It was disgusting. There wasn't any word made to describe her disgust and hatred towards the man she had never met. Severus was their only son. Don't they have any sense of obligation towards him. Instead, his father tried to rape him?

"Shh, Shh, Severus. You are safe now" she ran her hand on his hair. "It wasn't your fault. Nothing is your fault" she kissed his forehead, laying her head over his and her tears mingling with his.

Severus wasn't listening to her. He was in too much trauma of the happenings of last day that he could hardly comprehend anything. His own thoughts were a mess. Lily murmured reassurance in his ears and he continued to sob.

He loved that Lily was there for him when no one else was. He loved her touch, her hand around him and one rubbing his hair. Nothing could have comforted him more than this.

His sobs receded gradually. He pulled back, looking at his lap.

"You alright?" Lily asked.

"No, there are just no more tears to cry" he answered hoarsely.

She kissed the side of his forehead and laid his head on her shoulder again, taking one of his hands into hers.

"You know none of it was your fault"

He nodded slowly. "Yeah" he croaked.

"When did you heal me?" he frowned, his voice rough because of crying.

Lily sighed. "I and Tuney had a fight, so, I came here for some fresh air and found you here with your trunk and bag. You were badly bruised, your lip was swollen, you were groaning in sleep" she looked at him. "You don't remember anything?"

He shook his head. "I just remember sleeping in pain and waking without it" he shrugged.

"Yeah… I gave you a pain killer, I got ice packs for you, are they helping…?" she pointed towards the packs, now lying on the bench.

"Yes, they did" he smiled.

"I tried to take you home but you dozed off soon after I gave you the pills…" she tried hesitantly, well knowing that this wasn't a topic Severus wanted to discuss.

"So, you have been sitting here since…?" his eyes went wide and his heart warmed. He loved her.

She shrugged. "Yes, waiting for you to wake up" she said casually. "And now you are coming home with me, Severus" she said rather firmly.

Severus shook his head, embarrassed of his situation. "Lily… I've been living here for a week now and it's absolutely fine with me. I even have money, so I can buy food for myself" he stated.

Lily gave a half irritated and half sympathetic look. "I didn't know about it before, but now I do and you are coming with me"

"Lily, I-"

"No. You are coming with me and that's final" she crossed her hands on her chest.

"Lily, I'll just be a burden-"

"No, you are not" she again said firmly.

"Your parents-"

"They will absolutely be fine by the idea"

"Lily… you don't get it-"

"Then we can talk at home"

"I am moving nowhere"

"Neither am I" she said cheekily.

He sighed. This was useless. Lily wouldn't agree on him being here any longer than he had been. He would love to be the at Evans' too, but then only one thing keeping him back was his pride. He didn't like to take help or feel helpless.

From the corner of his eye, he saw the silvery substance billowing lightly through the light breeze. And before he could know, a wind wave moved it a bit farther. He couldn't lose that! He stretched his legs, so that they were touching the ground now. He tried to stand up, forcing his muscles to support, but the next moment he found himself crumpled on the bench.

"Severus!" Lily shrieked. "Could you please ask for some bloody help, when you need it" she rolled her eyes and helped him sit straight.

She eyed him, who was staring in his lap and went to pick the invisibility cloak, keeping it into Severus' bag.

"Done?" she kept her hands on her hips. "This is what you wanted?"

He nodded, too ashamed to utter a word or look at her.

She gave an exasperated sigh and grabbed his jaw gently, lifting it enough, so that his eyes met hers.

"Asking for help isn't weak, Severus and you are certainly not weak" she smiled and kissed his cheek. He blushed and she laughed.

"Now are you coming or…?"

"Fine" he swallowed his pride. He couldn't even stand without help; how will he live alone here? "But on one condition" he looked at her smirking.

"And what will that be Mister? Huh?" she came to his side and flirtatiously rested her arm on his shoulder.

"You'll start calling me Sev again?" his eyes showed longing.

Lily laughed. "Absolutely, Sev"

He smiled. "Now if you will help…" he reluctantly gave up.

She jolted up from the bench and gave him an arm to hold on to it while they walked. They entered the Evans' house. It seemed empty. He threw a questioning glace at Lily.

"It's rather early, Sev. They are still asleep" she huffed.

"What's the time?"

"Uh… around six thirty" she shrugged.

"Then, when the hell did you come to the park?" he was stunned. He never realized it was this early.

To his surprise her face blushed red. "Umm… four or something"

She seated him on the dining table. "And you and Petunia were fighting at what, three in the morning" he asked shrewdly.

She cleared her throat, clearly looking uncomfortable. "You know… well- Yes, were fighting and- I think I must bring your trunk from the park" she hastily changed the topic and passed through the door.

He shook his head. She was weird sometimes.

She came back after sometime and kept his things in the guestroom, upstairs, beside her room. Merlin! They were so close!

He didn't think Mr. and Mrs. Evans would be very happy with the idea, but just after getting the sight of him and hearing the happenings related by Lily, they started preparing his room. They also said that he will never keep a step in the Snape household until they are alive. They said that his father was a fucking bastard and a madman who didn't know the value of such a beautiful and worthy son.

He felt so loved. They had said that they wanted him here and had always seen him as their own son. He would never know how did Merlin send such god-like people in his life.

They called a doctor to attend to his injuries, even after his protests, the doctor had tutted at every wound of his.

Except for Petunia, everything was fine, but then he could live with ten Petunias if he never has to again see his father's face. He scowled. How much he wanted the bastard to die a very painful death.

But still he was happy with his life at that moment.
