Flossie and Jean sat at the kitchen table, eating the breakfast Pebbs had made. Picking at the food, Jean chuckled to herself. "Ya know, past me would be disgusted that I'm eating bugs as an everyday food, but now I don't think they're that bad." Flossie giggled at her comment, before the two girls noticed Pebbs rushing around, barricading doors and windows. Jean was confused. "Hey Pebbs, what's up? You look like you're preparing for an incoming invasion." She pointed out.
Pebbs stopped preparing as she turned to Jean. "Jean, this is serious. Hiber day is almost upon us, and so is the chance that one of us could be taken." Pebbs said. Flossie looked scared for a moment. "Oh…yeah…" she muttered, pushing her food away. Jean gaze shifted between the two amphibians. "I'm confused….." She muttered. Flossie sighed.
Every year there's a Hiber day, the temperature drops and it snows, and we all go into hibernation. But every year, a few amphibians disappear without a trace, never to be seen again." Jean nodded, rubbing her chin. "And you've been barricading your home? Why doesn't that work?" She asks.
Pebbs finished barricading the door, and turned to face the girls. "Well, sometimes what ever decides to take the amphibians breaks down doors, no matter how much we barricade it. I'm really doing it to slow down whatever tries to get in, give it second thoughts so it might leave us alone." She finished, letting out a sigh.
Flossie got up from the table, giving her mother a hug. "Possible goodbye, mum." She said, teary eyed. "Possible goodbye Floss, possible goodbye Jean." Pebbs said, moving over to hug Jean. Jean thought for a minute, before snapping her fingers as an idea struck. "Hey! Maybe I can protect you!" She stated, pushing Floss and Pebbs back. "There's no need for me to hibernate, since I'm warm-blooded! I can patrol the cabin while you guys have your hiber day!" She grinned. Pebbs had a worried look on her face. "You sure you wanna do this, Jean? No one knows what the monster is or what it's capable of."
Jean waved the newt off. "It won't be a problem! I'll protect you guys from-WAIT WHAT?!" She shrieked. Flossie and Pebbs were already frozen solid. "Already? Huh, guess it came earlier than expected."
A large amount snow had fallen, and Jean was marching around the cabin carrying a hand-made spear. Whistling a tune, she kicked at the snow. "Ha, monsters. Sure, there are plenty of weird animals in this world, but there's no such things as monsters." She chuckled.
A loud rustling sound came from the bushes. The human stiffened, looking around in fear at the surrounding woods. "Haha, it's fine, it's…probably just a frog! Just an old frog, looking through for some bugs…" she muttered, clutching the spear close.
A low hiss echoed from behind Jean. Swivelling around, she stared at the bushes. Cautiously stepping forward, she parted the branches, only to find nothing. "…see Jean? There's no such things as monsters. It was probably just some toad playing pranks…" she muttered.
Making her way back to the house, Jean searched the surrounding forrest. Upon coming closer to the door, she realised something. "When did I leave the door open…?" She wondered. Panic started to seize her when she came closer, hearing low growls coming from inside the house. "Oh crud!"
Rushing inside, spear at the ready, she almost screamed out in fear. A large, white weasel was standing in the cramped space, holding Pebbs in its mouth. It growled at the human.
Holding up her spear, Jean let out a war cry as she charged the large rodent. "LET HER GO!" Stabbing the weasel's paw, the rodent cried out in pain, dropping the newt as it jumped over Jean and escaped out the door.
Without hesitation, Jean slammed the door shut, leaning against it incase the weasel decided to come back. Sliding down the door, she drew her knees to her chest, shaking as the traumatic experience left her in shock.
A few hours later, the sun shone through the windows. Flossie and Pebbs began to thaw, feeling refreshed. Flossie patted her face, checking to see if every limb was where it should be. After making sure of that, she hugged her mother. "We're still alive!" She squealed. Pebbs hugged her back. "Yes, and we're all still he- hang on where's Jean?!"
Glancing around, the amphibians found Jean still leaning against the door, rocking back and forth as a way to calm herself down.
"Hey, uh, are you ok Jean?" Flossie asked, concerned for her friend. Kneeling beside the human, Flossie patted her head, as Jean repeatedly shook her head no. "I don't wanna talk about it." She muttered.
