The End of the Circus: A Tale of the Yizibajohei
Omake: Debut of the Global Patrol
by Regina Magia
New York City, the entrance to the 14th Street-Union Square subway station within Union Square Park, the third Saturday of November in 2012, an hour before lunch (Tōkyō time: Sunday, an hour after midnight)...
"You hear that, Will?"
Will Harding looked up from the row of candy bars he'd been glancing over at the newspaper kiosk located under the pavilion that also sheltered the subway station entrance north of East 14th Street at the south end of Union Square Park. "Hear what? We don't all have your super-hearing, you know!"
The native of Melbourne in Victoria pointed to the stairs leading to the subway platform. "Sounded like screeching metal," Jason Gregory warned. "Think there's some kinda accident happening, mate."
The others perked as they strained to hear what had just been detected by their friend. "We should check it out," Cài Lǐnhuí advised, waving the others of her peer group — and battle group — to follow.
The six teenagers quickly descended to the mezzanine level below the street, then ducked into nearby washrooms, with Lǐnhuí, her Russian BFF Nikíta Mikhalkóva and their Brazilian friend Eduarda Rodrigues going to the ladies' room while Will, Jason and their Sénégalais friend Seth Wade stepping smartly into the men's lavatory. Within a minute, all six teenagers then calmly emerged, dressed in the modern-form sleeveless pattern of Yizibajohei battlesuit: Will in gold with dark blue belt and boots with crossed spears on his chest; Nikíta in pink with pale purple belt and boots and a fluffy cloud insignia over her cleavage; Seth in safety orange with dark grey belt and boots and a castle on his chest; Jason in dark purple trimmed in dark red with golden crossed lightning bolts over a bursting sun; Eduarda in dark green trimmed in light grey with a horseshoe-shaped magnet on his chest; and Lǐnhuí in racing red with sky blue trim topped with a burst of arrows in a tree-like shape.
They quickly proceeded through the gates, paying their fare so as to not cause issue with the transit authorities. Watching them pass through, the security guard blinked. "Must be a late Hallowe'en..."
Once on the second basement level, the members of the Mumtuto Tyousa (the "Global Patrol") — so-called because of the international membership of the group — put themselves on the island platform for the northbound trains, ignoring the curious onlookers. Squinting his eyes as he reached out with his own version of telescopic vision, Will then blinked. "Shit!" the native of Portsmouth who was the Watchful Guardian of the West, Hor'buo ("Sentry"), declared, pointing towards the 23rd Street station on the 6 Lexington Avenue Local line east of north from their location. "Collision!"
Hearing that, Nikíta summoned her power as the Queen of the Fancy, Waetano ("Daydream"), to cloud the minds of the considerable crowd of onlookers gazing down the subway tunnels. Even if it was still a week before the aliens would be driven forever out of Tomobiki and they were on the other side of the world from where Moroboshi Ataru was still forced to reside as a way of distracting his "wife", it was just playing safe after all. "What's the plan, Will?" the native of Sankt-Peterbúrg wondered.
"Lǐnhuí, you and Seth get passengers to the 23rd Street platform; the trains are closer to there," the man often nicknamed by his peers as "Yiziba's Man of Steel" thanks to his considerable extrasensory powers atop high-level FISS capabilities instructed, glad that his experience in the British Sea Cadets was helping out in this case. "Jason, Eddie and I will pry the cars apart to clear a path for the people to get clear. Nikíta, you calm that fellow down and get his co-workers here, preferably with medical training." Here, he indicated a security guard, who was screaming on his cell phone calling 911.
"I know basic first aid," Nikíta advised. "I can help there."
"Excellent. Let's move out, people!"
Sensing the Queen of the Fancy fully extending her powers to make people not panic over what was happening and to calm down the security guard on the platform itself, the other members of the Global Patrol quickly sprang into action. Will flew down to the end of the aft train set, then quickly darted around to the left to get where the two separate consists had come together quite rudely moments before. Following him using her own magnetic abilities was Eddie, the current incarnation of the Metal Twister, Dutorie ("Polara"). Once they got to the impact point between the two train sets, the West Midlander sliced his hands into the mangled metal and heaved hard to pull the cars apart while his friend from Belém in the Amazon River delta of northeast Brazil reached out with her technopathic capabilities to cut power lines and prevent a fire from breaking out while the three others of their battle group boarded the trains themselves to commence the evacuation of passengers.
As Will moved to tear open doors while Eddie continued to ensure no fire broke out thanks to the force of the collision, the West Midlander was joined by Jason, the current incarnation of the Rolling Chaos, Tumsam ("Mayhem"). The Victorian teen was quick to deploy his ki claws — augmented by higher levels of strength though he lacked the other standard FISS capabilities — to shear away doors, then moved to help people to ground, directing them to the platform about two hundred metres away.
Lǐnhuí made use of her superspeed abilities and heightened durability granted her as the Mountain Racer, Hor'bo ("Windsprint"), to carry elderly passengers to the safety of the 23rd Street platform. Helping with moving the disabled was Seth; the native of Kédougou near the Guinean border had been Gifted to become the Mobile Redoubt, Luobu ("Castle"), thus could teleport people from the passenger compartments to the platform. There, much to the relief of everyone, friends from the Department of Magic and the Special Committee on Alien Activities were present; they had come in alongside Nikíta to assist with first aid while at the same time moving to mask events from the general public.
"Busy morning, huh?" Agent Jay — New York City police detective James Edwards in civilian life — noted to Seth as he and his partner moved to keep the crowds calm with the help of their neuralyzers.
"This is supposed to be our day off, Monsieur Inspecteur!" the Mobile Redoubt joked back.
He then teleported off to get more people. Laughter escaped the magicals and paranormally-equipped normals as they continued to keep people calm and silent about the metahuman help concerning this particular incident. "At least we can say one thing about those people, Kevin," Sergeant Stephanie Wilkinson of the DMLE based out of the Woolworth Building in lower Manhattan commented.
"And what's that, Stephanie?" Agent Kay — Kevin Brown in his normal life — asked.
"How cheerful they are doing work like this!"
"And you're surprised?"
She stared askance at the Bay Stater. "What do you mean?"
He gave her a knowing smirk. "The thing our galactic neighbours fear the most are BORED Yizibajohei!"
The auror considered that before nodding...
Two hours later, inside the headquarters of the Men In Black near the World Trade Centre complex...
"Hey! Nice work, guys! That was awesome!"
Still in their fighting uniforms, the six members of the Global Patrol waved to the Remoolian assistant agent who was relaxing with co-workers awaiting some lunch in a cafeteria which had been modified to accommodate many forms of alien life. "Of course it was excellent work, Frank!" Will asserted before they took their seats at one table while a smiling waitress — a Baltian even if disguised as a Terran — came up to take their orders. "What did you bloody expect?! After all, we're an international team!" He waved to himself, then his fellow students who had met when they became part of Raising Hand, a United Nations sponsored cultural exchange program. "You think bloody Yanks could do better?!"
"Hey! I resemble that remark, Sentry!" Agent Jay snapped from nearby.
Laughter filled the air as the waitress took their orders, then everyone relaxed. Soon enough, cups of coffee and tea were in hand. A toast was soon proposed by Seth at the success of their first successful mission as a group after their recruitment a year before by one of the people Tariko Katabarbe had seen Gifted during Sweet Valley Summer back in 2007, Amy Sutton, the current incarnation of the Shot-put Siren of the South and one of Yiziba's most powerful FISS-types, Bisete Buorite ("Trebuchet"); this was before her move back to her old hometown from Stamford across the Connecticut border.
After people sipped, Will leaned back. "Even better, there were no casualties," he then observed.
"Lot of people were still hurt, mate," Jason coolly observed.
"Stop being such a pessimist, Jaye!" Lǐnhuí snarled as she reached over to swat his head. As others chuckled, the native of Dàlián overlooking the Yellow Sea gazed on Nikíta. "What did you sense?"
"EMTs weren't worried," the Sankt-Peterbúrgskij teen observed before sipping her caravan tea.
"So they're alright," her best friend concluded.
"Lǐnhuí's right," Eddie calmly affirmed, nodding. "Like Will just said, our first outing was perfect!"
"What do we do to celebrate?" Seth wondered.
"I've wanted to try some Max Brenner," Nikíta noted.
The others chuckled. Coming to the Big Apple had exposed them to all sorts of interesting treats from even more places than each other's homelands. Learning of the famous Israeli-owned chocolate restaurant chain whose local establishment was on Broadway south of Union Square — they had actually been going to check it out before two subway train sets decided to get VERY closely and rudely acquainted — had definitely perked their interest, especially that of the girls in their group.
"Just be sure to watch what Lǐnhuí gets," Will warned. "We DON'T need a hyperactive speedster!"
"WÈI! I'M NOT BARRY ALLEN, WILL!" Lǐnhuí snapped.
Laughter filled the cafeteria...
