Katsuki was staying up late one night in Izuku's room as his brother was still recovering from pneumonia. It had improved greatly, but the verdanette was still pretty weak, especially when he started talking. Several times the blonde had to yell at him to use the notebook to ask questions, and thanks to him making notes he was able to transition pretty quickly.
Music was also playing in the background with various songs, and a majority were alright. He preferred stronger, angry rock music but Izuku loved pop and soft rock songs. Most were soothing songs of hope, and a few were songs that represented his past like Bad Romance. He had found something to help him cope, meditating on each music as he drifted off to sleep.
Katsuki chuckled as he remembered he crossed his room one day and heard his brother sing, and damn it surprised him. He was singing Hallelujah by Pentatonix and it was so emotional, soulful, and pure that the moment he releases a note, you could feel what he has been through. Every note becomes sharper, ready to cut down the coldest man to tears. The blonde himself had to quietly run into his room as he too broke down, remembering the things he had and hadn't done to help him, yet holding on to the heat of hope as Izuku crescendoed to the final verse, thanking whoever the deity was who gave him a second chance on life.
A slight cough got out of his musings as Izuku shifted in his bed, listening for any signs of liquid or gunk. So far it was dry and it had elevated breathing for a few seconds before it steadied once more. Katsuki sighed in relief, his entire family was worried about Izuku after that incident but he seems to recover nicely. Hell, even his new friends were worried, Kaminari especially. He might need to allow him to visit on Friday.
Another song suddenly popped up and a sense of nostalgia and disgust filled the blonde. He hated this song in the past with a passion, as he felt it was a weak song and it sounded more like a sappy lullaby. That feeling changed after that incident, and True Colors revealed its true meaning.
"You with the sad eyes. Don't be discouraged, oh I realize, it's hard to take courage. In a world full of people you can lose sight of it all, and the darkness inside you makes you feel so small."
Katsuki snorted after he started humming to the lyrics, his mind going back to the days Izuku flinched and cringed, forcing himself to look small to avoid any conflict. It hurt the blonde that he did not see he needed help sooner during that time, or reacted on instinct that he needed help. He flinched hard as a memory appeared and saw his brother flinch and shrink away from him several years prior, reminding him that he was such a douche.
"Show me a smile then. Don't be unhappy, can't remember when, I last saw you laughing. If this world makes you crazy and you've taken all you can bear, just call me up. Cause I'll always be there."
Again this slapped him in the face as he tried to remember the last time Izuku truly smiled before the rescue. The shine of green, the pure smile, the supernova look, he had last seen it in 3rd grade, before the school shitshow. He started to tear too, as he remembered the last day in Aldera, where Izuku lost all light in his eyes because of him.
"I was never there for you," Katsuki muttered as he listened more to the lyrics. "How the hell were you able to forgive a jackass like me?"
"B-because, after everything we've been through, you never left me."
Katsuki jolted as Izuku spoke raspily, looking at him with tears in his eyes. "You should be sleeping, nerd."
Izuku nodded but gave one last piece. "Everyone else abandoned me, and despite your isolating attitude, you still allowed me to stick with you and to stay a part of your life."
He held out one of his hands and Katsuki held it, grateful that his temp was tolerable. "Your life was a part of all of us. You had a type of charm that needed to be preserved. Besides, if you know about the Bakugou's, we are deadly protective. You have been a part of our family since day one, though I wish we were able to save you from that pain sooner."
Izuku wiped Katsuki's tears and smiled lightly. Indicating that he was becoming exhausted. "I am glad to be your brother, Kacchan…" He said, before closing his eyes and falling asleep once more.
Katsuki shook and more tears fell as he let his emotions take over, wiping Izuku's tears away as well. "Just sh-shut up and sleep, Nerd."
