Chapter 2: Escape from Minecraft

Alex

I stared at Nightmare in shock. "What do you mean, Entity is going to kill us?"

Nightmare tried to steady his breathing and leaned against the wall so he wouldn't have to put any weight on his injured leg. "He's at Mojang's headquarters as we speak. He's going to disconnect all players and mobs from the source code, which will kick all the players out and disable respawning. Once that's done, he said he'll come for you."

I took a step back. "How do you know all this?"

"I… when I escaped CleanCode, he promised Memory and I's safety as long as I worked for him."

"You escaped CleanCode?" I asked. He nodded. "Where's Herobrine?" Surely Nightmare wouldn't have left him there. I don't know why I cared, but I did.

Nightmare hesitated, then sighed. "It's complicated."

"Is he alive?" I asked in alarm.

"No, no. he's alive. He… just didn't want to come with me."

I raised an eyebrow, not believing him. Why would Herobrine want to stay in prison?

I realized that every player on the server was gone. Nightmare's eyes doubled in size when he saw this "You have to go! Now!"

"If you work for Entity, how do I know that this isn't some kind of trick!?" I took a step back from him.

"I promise, I'm just trying to help you. I don't care what Entity says, I've seen too many Glitches die to watch him kill you."

I was touched that Nightmare cared that much about me. "Thank you," I said.

"Now get out of here!"

Right. Nightmare teleported away, and I rushed to the chest in my room. I dumped everything in it into my inventory and slipped on the wristband. Without waiting a second, I dashed into Steve's room and threw the door open. "Steve! Wake up! We have to go!"

He blinked a few times and sat up. He must have been woken up by everyone leaving. "What's going on, Alex?"

"Entity is coming to kill us!"

"What?"

Entity 303 joined the game

Steve drew a sharp breath and stood up. I took his hand and pressed a random button. I didn't pay attention to which one, as I was too panicked to do so. Our surroundings melted away into the bright colors, and I prayed that wherever I just sent us, it would be better than this.

Notch

I clicked away at my keyboard in an ambient manner. The latest update was almost out, and I had way too much to do make sure it would be ready in time. At least this was my only problem. Herobrine was gone, Mathew wasn't causing any problems, and Steve and Alex were enjoying themselves on a player's server.

Turns out, Mathew was causing more problems than I thought he was.

Suddenly, my monitor froze, glitched, and crashed. I jerked back, surprised by the sudden turn of events. "What the…" I shut down my computer and restarted it, but all that resulted in was an error message being displayed. I furrowed my brow in irritation.

The door slammed open, and a breathless Jeb ran into my office. "Notch! we have a HUGE problem! Minecraft is completely offline!"

"WHAT!?" I roared. I followed him into the cubicle room where every single screen I could see showed the same error message mine did. I turned towards Jeb. "What the HELL is going on!?"

"We've been hacked. Every computer in the building has been infected with some kind of virus," Jeb tried to explain.

"How!? We have software to protect us from cyber attacks like this!"

"Notch, I don't think this attack came from a human."

I went white. "You think a Glitch did this?"

"Who else?"

I instantly began running through the lists of possible suspects. Herobrine was imprisoned. As was Null. There were dozens of Glitches hiding in the game, but none of them were powerful or brave enough to pull something of this scale off. That left only one possible culprit. "Entity 303," I hissed. "I bet serious money that he is behind this." I turned to Jeb. "I want everyone working towards getting the game back online. I am going to trach down 303."

"Okay," Jeb turned and walked off to an unknown destination, and I headed back to my office. I also have to find Steve and Alex. All of the tracking programs I have on them are shut down now, and who knows what 303 wants with them. They could be back on Earth, for all I knew. They could even be dead. I crushed the possibility down as I sat down at my desk. Entity has crossed a line. I've let him run around for long enough.

When I woke up that morning, I had no idea that today would be anything extraordinary. I woke up, did my morning routine, listened to Emily say, "like," a thousand times, and ate breakfast. It was summer break, so I had all day to play as much video games as I wanted. I booted up my computer and clicked on Minecraft. Emily was whining about something, but I honestly couldn't have cared less.

Suddenly, my screen froze, then kicked me back to my home screen with nothing but a message reading, "Unable to load. Check internet connection."

"Hey, is anyone having trouble loading Minecraft?" Travis asked.

"That's, like, what I was saying!" Emily complained. "Neither of you, like, ever listen to me!"

"It's saying something about internet connection," I explained. "That's weird though, because I'm showing full bars."

"You guys, like, might want to see this," Emily held out her phone. A news article was displayed with a headline reading, "Mojang's cyber-security attacked, Minecraft completely offline."

"You think Herobrine is behind it?" Travis asked.

"No way. He's imprisoned, remember?" I pointed out.

"Well, then, like, who did it?" Emily asked.

"We did learn that Entity 303 is real too. Its possible that he has something to do with this," Travis said.

"Whatever happened, I just home that Steve and Alex are okay," I said.
