'It was a small hopeful dream, a thought with the wings of a fairy. But as with all things full of hope, it would be terribly difficult to birth.'

-Once Upon a Time, Nikita Gill

Centuries Ago:

It was created by a stroke of luck more than anything else and no one quite remembers anymore who came up with the idea. Perhaps it was the Queen herself, or some sparrowman who looked up at the moon and wondered what it might hold. Perhaps a dream given to the fairies for future days when times were dark and hard. Regardless of the matter, the fairies quickly sought to bring its power down to the forest in hopes that it may bring forth luck and prosperity. They called it the Blue Harvest Moon, which came every 100 years, shining its light through the Moon Stone. The stone itself was gifted to the fairies generations ago by the dwarves who mined their dust in return for an abundance of food and warmth beneath the earth. Its light then burst into the blue fairy dust, which was more powerful than any magic they used.

But the cauldron they used to mix this new dust was soon imbued with its power. The fairies realized that this power could be used for either great good or great evil and sought to hide the cauldron away from mortal beings. They hid it beneath Bald Mountain where the fearsome dragon Kyto lived, guarding it for many years to come and would only give it back to the fairies should he feel it was safe in their hands. Though he did not care for the actions of Men or fairies, he never gave up so easily what he held in his possession. That was the nature of dragons…

but even dragons could be deceived.

A Millennium before the Dark Curse:

The magic ripped through the houses, cracking the wood to splinters as blood splattered over the remaining walls. Cries called out for only moments before they were torn from the throats of the slaughtered. It was violent. A rampage of pure raw magic. The bodies thrown uncaringly with few managing to escape before they too were thrashed open by the monster's power. The fairies fought hard, many tossed aside like insects, their magic too feeble in their attempts to subdue the beast. Only the Queen could manage a possible victory and even she was forced to use trickery as a means to even stand a chance.

One fairy stood on a neighboring hill, the sight before her silencing whatever doubts she had for her actions. If she was honest, it had worked too well. While no other fairy or creature had the hope to achieve it, she had bested herself. Her own genius displayed in all its power. When the beast had completed its genocide, all hopes of fleeing to the forest were diminished as the Queen and her subjects finally managed to grab hold of the beast and bind it. The fairy cursed.

As she sought to flee herself, she was soon halted by a blur of wings and color. A sister of hers had thrown themselves to the ground, each now tumbling down the earth, struggling to regain their footing. Once done, neither brushed off the dirt on their dresses as they stood and faced the other. The fairy didn't care. If it was a battle her sister wanted, so be it.

"How could you?!" Her sister cried. "You've killed thousands!"

"I didn't kill them. He did." She replied, nodding to the dark creature. "And it had to be done!"

"It doesn't matter how you word it, it's still the same thing. You betrayed everyone!"

The Black Fairy snarled. "I had too! I had to show you, to show the Queen, you were both wrong! The humans can't be trusted."

"You never gave them a chance!" The Blue Fairy raised her wand, aiming it at her sister. There were rules regarding fairy magic and one never pointed it at their own. "I'm sorry sister."

"You can't do this!" Raegan cried out. She raised her own wand, daring to match her sister's resolve, but she was too late. Ruel had cast the first spell and she found dark hands grabbing her, pulling her into another realm where not even the Queen could find her. A dark realm where light never shone.

"You will pay for this! I will have my revenge!"

Her cries were broken with the last whirl of magic shutting the portal forever. The Black Fairy was banished, but now a new darkness loomed the lands and the fairies only hoped that one day, someone could save them all.

Fifty or Something Years later:

The first thing they noticed was the silence. The fairies no longer answered their cries for hope and guidance. They no longer provided warmth and shelter against the cold and dangers of the night. For the first time, for as long as they could remember, Mankind was left to defend for themselves. What they did not know was that the fairies had not abandoned them as they had feared, but rather they were forbidden to associate with the humans any longer, believing them to be no longer worthy of their magic. So the humans turned their faith to a higher source of power. One that would not abandon them or leave their prayers unanswered. A god. Soon, cathedrals arose from the ground and religion spread across the land. Kingdoms then followed. Both magic and God battled for control, but fear still held its grip among the people.

However, there were a few fairies who still kept to their old ways and believed in a dream the Queen once held before she passed away. So they left their home, abandoning their wings and mating with the humans in hopes of uniting the two races. From this union, a new magic was born and with it, a new people. Gypsies. But when darkness once again emerged from the shadows, they were prosecuted and hunted, forced into hiding in the smallest corners of the earth. Among these courts, one child was born, believed to hold the strongest of all magic. Magic that was believed to have been torn away into the darkest realm. A Savior.

Author's Note: Whew! Okay, so…sup everyone! I teased this story a few months ago but let me tell you, it was about 2 years in the making. What started off as a little thought of 'what if' has turned into a new lore for Once Upon a Time and I am STOKED. Grant it, it has been…painful to say the least to bring this story into fruition but I do believe it will be worth it. In case you may be wondering, I have the beginning, middle, and end of the whole series already figured out, with a few things here and there to still get done. I have learned from my other stories that I always just threw the story out there with nowhere to go and it never really ended too great (I thought). So I learned from that mistake and fixed it and wow, I got a lot. Like, a lot a lot.

I have not only changed the history of Once Upon a Time, but as you can probably already tell, I have added a few new things as well. Many more characters we should have seen in the show and I have added a lot of new fairytales as well. I didn't just work with the movies. I worked with fables, Slavics and a sprinkle of little non-Disney movies that were some of my favorites that we will meet in a later time. Speaking of which, I said 'series' and yes, you read that right. This isn't a new story to fix Season 1. I already have Season 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and (possibly) 8 planned out for some major introductions to all the new characters and stories we are going to see and the whole story that I truly believe will make this different from other AU's.

And it. Has. Been. Painful. Honestly, I didn't expect it to get this big but now I am full blown into it and I need to get it out of my head before I go even crazier because I'm already there. But I am also SUPER EXCITED and I truly cannot wait to share it with everyone. I am also going to be uploading this series on AO3 and I have started a Tumblr page just for this story that will give you some hints and new information you probably will not get in the story.

Thankfully, I am not alone. I got a good little friend from work helping out and providing new ideas, characters and stories and who suffered my bouts of writers block for the last new months. The last line of that poem at the beginning was not just a line. It is a truth. As I said, this has been maybe my biggest project and it has been a true pain in the-anyways, I really hope you like it and love it and stick with me to the end. It would be a major help and as always, Reviews are my best friend. And if you have any questions, you are free to ask but I can't guarantee an answer all the time because there are some things I want as a surprise, obviously. And who knows, if you do some thinking and some digging and look up some clues I might share on the Tumblr page, you might be able to figure some of those answers on your own. Who knows.

Anyways, I'll share a bit more in the further A/N in following chapters. This was just the prologue to get our feet warm. I hope you enjoyed it and let's get this started!
