POV 1 Hitodenchak

So, Curran is with her sister now and we are being served food at what must look like a very strange assortment of guests to you human readers.

"We are deeply grateful towards you for bringing our daughter back home.", Northwemko states.

"You've been saying that a bunch of times now!", Pinecono notes.

"The truth must keep being preached, as lie and fallacy will also be repeated to no end.", the Red Dark Magician states.

"Uhm, to not beat around the Immortal BUSHi and to adress the Elephant Statue of Disaster in the room, I assume Curran will be staying with you.", I say, which is the silly joke Curran would have made now. Huh, it's sad to see this team disbanded on the same day that it was formed.

"Disaster, you choice of words is an apt one.", Northwemko says, "Curran has had her way for far too long. House Arrest is far too small a punishment. As glad as we are to have her back safe and unharmed, we have to show consequences."

"How unfortunate.", Effect Veiler states, "As unruly as she might have been, Curran is what brought us together."

"Very sad.", Acorno says.

"There is nothing that could possibly change your mind?", Robolady asks.

"If she proves to have learned her lession, we can permit her to reunite with you.", Curran's father says, „but not for long stretches of adventure."

Though is he her father? Is the darker skin from tanning or is it normal? But thinking back, Curran is less fair-skinned than Northwemko, but brighter skinned than the Red Dark Magician, so it probably lines up. That kind of family drama would not fit in this story anyway.

"B-but you know, apart from that, some money would be nice!", Robolady says.

Oh, right, she had some problems with his mechanics store and wanted a slightly bigger cut of any rewards we might get for heroics.

"And apart from that, I'd like a different reward in addition.", I state, "a duel of all of us against both of you. Maybe even Pikeru."

Why did I ask for that? I mean, dueling style says a lot about a person's character and maybe Curran's non-talk about her parents being really mean people is actually true and so we are obligated to save her as our true first rescue mission? Yeah, I'm kinda saying this in the faint hope that this group doesn't split up on its first day.

"Well, we are the world of duel monsters after all.", Northwemko states, "But you won't be dueling against my daughters or my husband. It will be me only against three of you, since we are quite busy, having to deal with our lost daughter returning AND the other usual tasks."

"That is acceptable. Can we have a private discussion on who gets the chance?", I ask.

"If it doesn't take too long.", the Red Dark Magician states, "But the one making the demand should be joining."

After our dinner, we meet up in front of the castle.

"So, is this going to be our teams early swansong? Or do you have something else planned?", Robolady asks.

"Uhm...", then I describe what I just said in my inner monologue.

"So we first believe Curran to be just an ungrateful brat, but now you are holding onto the hope that Northwemko and Dark Magician are bad people?", Effect Veiler wonders.

"Yes.", I admit.

"One of the guys trying to get her back was ready to gun her down.", Acorno says.

"We really should have mentioned that.", Pinecono says, „but they could probably pretend to be shocked and fake-apologize for not having made sure that no unscrupulous people were searching for her."

"Would we be be good enough to tell their true intentions from their reactions?", I wonder.

"Their exact answer would probably be something along the line of: Oh, if only we weren't so uhm, foolish as to not check better who we're sending out to save her, or something like that in more elegant wording.", Effect Veiler says, "Let's mention it later."

"That would look suspicious.", Robolady says.

"Wait, wo are we going to make Northwemko duel?", Pinecono asks, "If we dilly-dally around for longer, we'll end up wasting our only chance!"

"We two are gonna join.", Acorno answers, "Our decks are a bit more similar, so if they are evil and we need to have a final showdown later, then they won't learn as much about us."

"Our Lady would wish you back for the duel in the private arena.", one of their servants says.

"Alright, let's go, we've made up our minds.", I say.

"Now, who wishes to duel me the most?", Northwemko asks.

"It will be me alongside Acorno and Pinecono.", I answer.

"As for the dueling conditions, I will gains three times the usual Life Points and have a turn between each of you.", she says.

Is this and the phrasing 'who wishes to duel me' a hint that she is indeed a bad person? How are we even going to interpret her style to verify our hypothesis?

Northwemko (12000lp) vs Acorno, Pinecono an Hitodenchak (4000lp)

"I begin. I summon Rescue Rabbit and banish it to summon two copies of Gil Garth.", Northwemko starts.

"Funny enough, we did duel Gil Garth alongside two minions just on this very day.", Effect Veiler says.

"Oh, I've heard about him falling from grace.", Northwemko says.

"Yes, quite far. To think we've let ourselves be threatened by them...", Robolady says sheepishly, "But alas, those rumours could turn out to be wrong at any moment!"

"It will take quite a bit after the villain's plans failing, before they truly lose their intimidation, do not fret over this. I proceed by overlaying them into Number 66 Master Key Beetle. I set one card and detach an overlay Unit from Key Beetle to protect the face-down card and end my turn."

Could the first sentence be talking about herself? And 66 is an evil number, right? Or was it 42?

"I'm gonna go first of us, alright?", Acorno suggests.

"Sure, go for it.", I say.

"I discard Pinecono to summon myself. Now Pinecono revives himself. I normal summon Darklon, transforming me and my buddy into Dark monsters and boosting us and Darklon by one level. I overlay them into Number 96 Dark Mist. I attack Key Beetle, I detach Darklon from Mist to halve Key Beetle's ATK and add it to Dark Mist. That makes for 100 damage to you."

(Northwemko LP: 12000-11900)

"However, I use Safe Zone on Key Beetle so that he will survive this fight.", Northwemko counters.

This creates for an invincible combo, (once she summons herself) albeit with a weakened monster. At least it's not completely invincible. We only can't target it with card effect. Okay, maybe I'm pressuring myself a bit too much with this analysis thing, if I start overestimating her like that.

"Hmph. I set three cards and end my turn."

"In my second turn, I activate Pre-Preparation of Rites to add Ritual of Grace to my hand and then myself. I activate Ritual of Grace, I tribute Djinn Protector of Rituals and Djinn Charmcaster of Rituals. Then by my effect, I prevent me from being destroyed by card effects until Master Key Beetle and Safe Zone leave the field. I detach another overlay unit from Number 66 to add an additional layer of Protection to myself. The monsters I used to Ritual Summon myself prevent me from being destroyed by battle and negate the effects of my opponent's XYZ monsters, putting Dark Mist at 100 ATK again."

"I then use the following 2 cards! I use Corrupted Keys, summoning three tokens with the same ATK as Dark Mist and then flip up Pixie Ring, since the lowest ATK on my field is shared by several monsters, you cannot attack at all!", Acorno counters!

Suddenly, Effect Veiler pipes up: "Uhm, excuse us, but I've just remembered that we have some errands left to do. I'm sorry, but the rest of us is going to leave early."

"The rest is just me.", Robolady points out, "And what are you talking about?"

"Food. We can't demand another banquet from Northwemko. I suppose it's not suprising for a robot to forget this.", Effect Veiler says.

"I'm just covered in metal, I'm not a complete machien.", Robolady says, then realizes something, "oh wait, that makes it worse. So, uhm, yeah, we'll be leaving for now!"

And then they leave. Northwemko seems like she wants to comment something, but then decides to just proceed as normal. If she is a bad person like Curran has indicated, then she clearly missed this obvious ploy to look for evidence. Good job from Effect Veiler.

"I use Card of Variation, I draw 2 cards, but have to discard one card at the end of my turn or take 3000 points of damage. I activare Umbral Horror Refresh, putting my Number 66 at its original ATK value and gaining the regained ATK as Life Points. (Northwemko LP: 11900-13400) I will be patient and then end my turn and discard one card to prevent the 3000 points of damage."

Okay, Umbral Horror Refresh makes her look pretty suspicious.

"My turn then. I normal Summon Botanical Girl and activate Ties of the Brethren, for 1000 LP (Pinecono LP: 4000-3000) I summon two other monsters with the same type and level. I choose Neo Spacian Glow Moss and Rose Girl. With all of them, I Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Field Marshall (ATK: 2900) Botanical Girl now allows me to add a plant with 1000 or less DEF to my hand. I add myself! Then I use Inferno Reckless Search to add 3 more of me! Then I set the Pendulum Scale with Pendulumucho and Hallohallo! This scale of 0 and 2 is all I need to summon the mes! I also summon one copy of Water Spirit. Then I activate Hallohallo's effect to roll a dice and grant the tuner on my field a new level!"

He rolls a 6.

"Great! Time for another Level 9 Synchro! I use them all to summon Giganticastle! Since he was summoned with 3 non-tuners, he gains a total of 600 ATK! (ATK: 2900-3500) I attack your Key Beetle with both Synchro Monsters! (Northwemko LP: 13400-12400) I set two cards and end my turn."

"My turn, I use Pot of Desires, banishing the top 10 cards from my deck to draw 2 cards. Since I control no Synchro Monsters, I can use Synchro Control to take one of your Synchro Monsters for 1000 Life Points. (Northwemko LP: 12400-11400) I choose to take Giganticastle."

"I have a counter for that!", Acorno declares, "I use Trojan Blast to destroy it and deal damage equal to its ATK!" (Northwemko LP: 11400-7900)

She looks a bit annoyed. She had a specific counter for him only for him to have a specific counter for her specific counter.

"I will attack Pinecono directly. (Pinecono LP: 4000-1300) Then I attack with Master Key Beetle."

"I activate Confusion Chaff. Now your monsters have to battle each other."

"However, Key Beetle is protected by Safe Zone.", Northwemko says, "this ends my turn."

(Northwemko LP: 7900-7700)

"That Anti-Xyz Djinn is pretty troublesome.", I mutter, "But I fortunatey have a specific counter too! XYZ Immunity immunizes my XYZ monsters to anything similar. And since you already have one, I get to draw a card."

"And I help him out with a Gift of Greed!", Pinecono says.

"I normal summon myself. And since I normal summoned a level 2, I get to Special Summon Double Guppy. I overlay those 2 monsters into Sky Cavalry Centaurea. Then I get to Special Summon Xyz Slidolphin from my hand. I add Instant Fusion (Hitodenchak LP: 4000-3000) which gives my Mudragon of the Swamp. Those two monstes then get overlaid into Bahamut Shark. I detach an overlay unit from Bahamut Shark to summon Toadally Awesome from my Extra Deck. Then I activate the Equip Spell Twin Swords of Flashing Light - Tryce. For that I have to discard something and I discard Water Hazard."

"Yes! They are not immunized to bouncing and non-targeting stuff!", Pinecono cheers.

Northwemko's eye is twitching. Okay, she is trying to hold back her annoyance. Maybe she is a loser deep down. Uh, I meant a sore one. Okay, small hint towards her being a bad person, yay! (Albeit pretty circumstancial and nothing to do with bad parenting, so, not yay)

"But to ensure that I don't have to give up needlessly many LP, I use Foolish Burial Goods to mill Moon Mirror Shield and then use Swords at Dawn to equip Centaurea with that spell as well. At least until the End Phase. I attack and detach both overlay units to bounce those monsters, then I attack directly with Toadally Awesome!"

(Northwemko LP: 7700-7600-7500-5300)

"Then I set a card and end my turn. Moon Mirror Shield is now destroyed and I pay 500lp to put it below my deck." (Hitodenchak LP: 3000-2500)

"You have exceeded my expectation, even If I knew that Curran could only be tamed by someone strong. I begin my next turn, by sumoning, Djinn, Fighter of the Rituals.
He can be summoned without tribute if I managed to perform a Ritual Summon during this duel. (ATK: 2300) If I do so, however, he can only attack if I control a Ritual Monster or am able to reveal one from my hand."

"Aw, shucks. If only we could've destroyed Northwemko.", Pinecono says.

"I attack Toadally Awesome (Hitodenchak LP: 2500-2400) and since Fighter survived a battle, I can add the Ritual Spell Advanced Ritual Art to my hand."

"However, since Awesome lost, I get to add a Water monster from my GY to my hand. I add one of myself back.", I say.

"I use Advanced Ritual Art to mill another Gil Garth and a copy of Bio-Mage to summon myself. This time, I am indestructible until your Bahamut Shark and Centaurea have left the field. I now end my turn."

So, there has been a hint just now that she isn't thinking highly of her daughter's strength. And maybe she is mean to Curran because of it. Very mean. And since she called Pikeru a very bad word, Pikeru is probably a smart prodigy.

"Back to me finally!", Acorno says, "I kind of wished I could have waited with activating Corruped Keys, so that the tokens have higher ATK. But I guess I have to do a simple turn. I attack Northwemko with Dark Mist and detach an overlay unit to drain half your power and deal 100 damage. (Northwemko LP: 5300-5200) And then I use Rank-Up Magic Quick Chaos to turn Mist into Storm! I attack your Fighter and detach an overlay unit from Storm to drain ALL attack points from fighter and deal 3300 points of damage!"

(Northwemko LP: 5200-1900)

"I definetly know that she will survive at least a few more turns, but it feels weird how quickly we are taking down her Life Points. Unless this is an elaborate feint somehow.", Pinecono says and dammit, don't give away our mistrust like that!

"It isn't.", Northwemko responds, "However, the fact remains that a duel isn't over until the last card has been played."

"Then I'm going to change the tokens to defense position, since you might destroy Pixie Ring and give back the turn to you."

"I will also do a simple turn and simply set one card.", Northwemko says.

"I'm equipping Ally of Justice Field Marshall with Lucky Axe, bringing it to 3400 ATK just to be sure and attack your face-down monster!", Pinecono declares.

"It is my first Forbidden Art, Fiber Jar, we all shuffle everything except our banished cards back to our decks and draw 5 new cards."

"The Mudragon still attached to Bahamut Shark is also an exception.", I say.

"I then summon me and Acorno by our combined effects. I overlay us into Ghosttrick Dullahan in DEF mode and set three cards and end my turn."

"Only the first forbidden art?", I wonder, "But curran has Sixth Sense and Cyber Jar. And she mentioned Pikeru being able to use Pot of Greed and Delinquent Duo."

"I only revealed it now because I regrettably made the mistake of underestimating you. If we ever have the pleasure of a rematch, I'll be sure to use my strongest deck."

"And this deck is?", I ask.

"I'll only reveal it for special celebrations or if I had to defend myself, so you'll have to wait until then.", probably until WE have to defend ourselves, "As it is my turn again, I normal summon Rescue Rabbit and banish it for two copies of Alexandrite Dragon and overlay them into Master Key Bettle Again. I then activate Rank-Up Magic Barian's Force."

"Shoot, I'll use Dullahan's effect to detach an overlay unit to halve Key Beetle's ATK!", Pinecono 'counters'

"Then the upgraded form will only gain one of Dullahan's overlay units and his ATK will only drop by 300, though that is offset slightly by the fact that Dullahan gains 200 ATK from having himself as one Ghosttrick monster on the field!", Acorno points out. (Dullahan ATK: 1200-900)

And by the fact that he is in Defense Position, so it most likely won't matter how much ATK he has anyways. That could honestly have been anyone's thoughts at this, but now it feels like I'm copying Curran. Minus the swearwords anyways. And If I did, I'd censor them normally.

"The summoned monster is Number C66 Master Lock Swarm. (ATK: 3500) I set a card and again use Advanced Ritual Art to mill Gil Garth and Bio-Mage to summon myself. I am indestructible by card effect as long as Master Lock Swarm and the face-down card are on the field. Then I detach two overlay units from Lock Swarm to target myself and my face-down cards. Those are now immune to all card effects and Number C66 is also immune to everything until they leave the field. He can also attack an additional time per turn for every protected card. With my own self, I attack Ghosttrick Dullahan."

"He can put himself back to the Extra Deck.", Pinecono says.

"I attack you with Lock Swarm."

"I use my Nutrient Z, before a battle with 2000 or more damage, I gain 4000 Life Points! Which basically means that I gain 500 LP now!" (Pinecono LP: 1300-1800)

"Ts. I will attack you again with Lock Swarm. (Pinecono LP: 1800-3500=0) Then I will defeat Hitodenchak (Hitodenchak LP: 2400-3500=0) I now end my turn."

Okay, Barian's Force seems evil, but still disconnected from bad and overly strict parenting.

"Dammit, most of my other card's would have affected her monster directly. I even had a Magical Cylinder.", Pinecono mutters.

"Time for me to turn this around!", Acorno declares confidently, "I normal summon Lonefire Blossom and tribute it to summon Talaya, Queen to Cherry Blossoms from my deck!
I activate Sprouty Garlic, which summons 2 statless token to my field, but I cannot summon level 5 or 6 monsters. Since they and Talaya are plants, she gains 100 ATK for each! (ATK: 2800-3100) Then I equip her with Thorn of Malice, giving her 600 more ATK! (ATK: 3100-3700)"

"But that spell would disable her from destroying my monsters by battle, one of the few things Lock Swarm does not prevent.", Northwemko points out, "And they are also immunized against the ATK reduction by Thorn of Malice."

"But what if she could attack you multiple times?", Acorno counters, "I use Double Attack, I need to discard a monster with a higher level than Talaya to allow her to attack twice! Thankfully, Mardel Generaider Boss of Light has that covered, since 9 is more than 8! I attack Northwemko!"

"I will have to burst your hopes early and use the face-down Shift. I change the attack target to Lock Swarm. The other attack may hit the desire target."

(Northwemko LP: 1900-1700-700)

"I still have one card to set.", Acorno says.

"My turn again. I will use my second forbidden Art, Metamorphosis, tributing myself to summon Invoked Purgatrio, you control Talaya, Thorns of Malice and your set card and the 2 tokens that increases its ATK to 3300, since it gains 200 for each."

"Another one. And this probably isn't even the craziest thing she can do with this card.", Pinecono mutters.

"I detach the final overlay unit from Lock Swarm to immunize Purgatrio. Purgatrio may attack all of your monsters once each and deal piercing damage, I attack one token."

"I flip up Lucky Punch! I now get to flip three coins and if I get three heads I draw three cards, if it's three tails, Lucky Punch is destroyed and I take 6000 damage, but that also happens upon other kinds of destruction. In any other scenario absolutely nothing happens."

Thankfully, he does get three heads.

"I discard Kuriboh against the first damage! (Talaya ATK: 3700-3600 Purgatrio ATK: 3300-3100)"

"I attack the other token."

"I toss again."

We get three tails.

"Thankfully I can discard Hanewata to negate this. And oh wait, I didn't take damage yet. (Acorno LP: 4000-900 Talaya ATK: 3600-3500 Purgatrio ATK: 3100-2900)"

"Lock Swarm attacks Talaya, but is immune to Thorn of Malice. That also includes the part where he cannot be destroyed by battle, but I can instead destroy the protected Purgatrio. I end my turn."

"I use Pot of Desires! I set two cards and end my turn."

"It seems this will be the end, I use my next forbidden Art, Giant Trunade to return all of those cards to the hand. Then I attack directly."

(Acorno LP: 900-3500=0)

WINNER: Divine Grace Northwemko

There definetly is something sketchy about her.

"Thank you for this magnificent duel.", I say.

"You were crazy strong!", Pinecono pipes up, "I wonder what Effect Veiler would have done against you!"

Yeah, she is kind of the strongest among us.

"Unfortunately, I have matters to attend to, sadly, I won't even be taking part in the next local tournament. So it will be a while until the rematch with the other ally of yours."

When would that tournament even be taking place? That is an important fact to consider. But we'll ask around the city and reunite with the others first and see if they found out anything.

POV 2 Effect Veiler

"Shouldn't we be in their house looking around for clues?", Robolady asks.

"They probably won't want us lounging around in there forever.", I ask, "so let's ask what the public thinks instead."

We meet a non-spellcaster in Oily Cicada and the spellcaster Adularia of the Moonlit Water.

"Hey, you two.", I say, "What do you know about Northwemko and the Red Dark Magician?"

"What are you, spies?", the oily Cicada asks.

"You're a paranoid one.", Robolady mutters, "We've just brought one of her children back and would like to know whom exactly we've helped."

"Why would you suddenly ask more detail about the people you've helped?", Adularia wonders, "that makes you even more fishy."

"To be blunt, Curran seemed unwilling.", I say, "to be brought back, I mean."

"What, you think her parents are terrible?", the cicada asks, "Well, I'm just a traveller, so I don't know if you've made a mistake bringing the kid back. And if you did... well, I'm afraid I'm busy, so sorry if I can't do more."

"Your paranoia subsided quickly.", Robolady says, "I assume Adularia doesn't know anything either?"

"The basic stuff. She and the Magician are basically the town's majors. But they wouldn't be mistreating their children. Pikeru seems pretty spoiled."

"Any chance that Curran is the opposite of spoiled?", I ask.

"No, she wouldn't be using a forbidden art if that was the case."

Learning to use Pot of Greed was no easy feat, unless a god card or something else of higher power is simply granting you it, you'd have to go through some tough training. An impatient master could make it more grueling if they wanted. Which would make it all the more embarassing if someone like Yata Garasu or Performapal Monkeyboard managed to flee the forbidden realm.

"But I doubt it was just handed to them. One needs an incredibly high level of power to hand over forbidden cards.", I note.

"Are you trying to find the truth or do you just randomly want to indict someone?", Adularia says, sounding annoyed.

"Um, well-", I try to say, but they already leave.

"I mean, technically it kind of IS the latter, but we ignored some strong signs that she might not have a happy home.", Robolady says.

"Yes. Let's walk around further. Maybe someone else can tell us.", I say.

Since we tried to look for our first mission in a tavern, maybe another food-selling place would be a good idea.

We talk to Patissciel Couverture and the Exosister's Magnifica, but they only admit that Curran might have very strict parents, but all insist that it is within a reasonable amount.

We then go to a sushi place and talk to the owner there, Gunkan Suship Ikura Class Dreadnought and the Customers, Fallen of Albaz and Visas Starfrost, they tell us to talk to the kids themselves and tell us that Pikeru might be found at Patissciel's place. So we head back and indeed manage to find her in that spot.

"Hello Pikeru.", we say.

"Oh, hello! You're the guys that brought back Curran!", she says.

"Well, now I'm a girl, but that can change.", Robolady says, "But why would your sister flee? She refused to tell us so we got curious."

Straight to the point, but is that really the best way to get her to admit anything. (And I really wish we could do this without tricking a small child.)

"Hmmm. Because she's not very smart.", Pikeru says.

"But she did learn the forbidden arts of Cyber Jar and Sixth Sense.", I say.

"But I can do Last Will, Card of Safe Return, Giant Trunade, Graceful Charity, Time Seal, and since that one's no longer forbidden, I learned Magical Scientist and Elder Entity Norden!", Pikeru boasts, "And if the get unbanned, I'll go for Pot of Greed."

A prodigy. Nothing else to comment on that.

"Was there a punishment for not being as good as you?", Robolady asks.

"Well, Number 59 would only make food for mom, dad and me. And Naturia Rosewhip punished her if she was naughty enough to steal food.", Pikeru says.

Yeah, that sounds a bad as Curran said.

"How much better than her were you?", I ask, "I mean sure, your number of forbidden cards is higher, but it's hard to quantify that since we don't know your learning process."

"Hmmmmm, dunno how to say it other than with the amount of forbidden cards we can play."

"It's okay. I think we know enough about her.", Robolady says, "I hope we can visit Curran again once she's bettered herself. Let's see how our friend's duel has been going."

After they've left Pikeru's earshot and the people dueling Northwemko left the house and they all reunited

"Okay, first: trying to see whether she's a bad person by judging her dueling style was idiotic.", Hitodenchak admits.

"Second: If people refused to believe this story, then I can understand Curran breaking down at the thought of it.", Pinecono says, "she probably has told it many times already."

"Third: Now I really hope Sandgambler almost gunning her down was a complete accident.", Acorno says.

"Now, where are we going to get the help needed to rescue her?", Robolady says.

"Fortunately, the city 'World Legacy in Shadow' has people like Searchlightman that could help. Or maybe Space-Time Police. Or we find one of those around here."

"So, to face the villain with good publicitly in a good guy city, we look for a hero with bad publicitly in a good guy city?", Hitodenchak asks.

"Yes. It's the only way.", I say, "Unless of course, they are already here. But we definetly can't just do this on our own."

"Then what are we waiting for?", Acorno asks.

"Let's move out and rescue Curran!", we all say in unison.

Time it took since last chapter: 146 days

Not all Krawler support mentions Link Summoning, so it should not be too troubling to find them here. Same goes for Albaz and Starfrost references.
