Yang Xiao Long and Akane Tsunemori's Commentary of Spies in Disguise (Part 2 - Final)
"Lance and Walter arrive in Venice that Kimura told them earlier where Killian would be to steal the database at the Agency Data Vault.", Yang resumes as they start off the second part of the review, "Why do I get the feeling that Tom Holland had already been there before."
Akane shrugs, "Gotta say it may be a callback to Spider-Man: Far From Home. Not because they're both by the same studio, but it's related to the same actor. No wonder Tom Holland had been going around the world."
"But it seems that Marcy and her agents got to them though as she tries to talk to Walter.", the blonde huntress said as they watch Marcy tell Walter that he's bright and the fact that he might've accidentally gotten her boot stuck in one of the globs of silly string from earlier, with Yang mocking, "Yet, thank goodness I got my boot back right after. I don't want anyone to post obscure pictures around the subject on Deviantart!", before noting, "But get this. It was also revealed that, in sad news, Walter's mother Wendy died in the line of duty years ago, and this is the reason why Walter is the deuteragonist, and even I forgot to mention his backstory earlier. The beginning of the film showed a very emotionally touching scene with Wendy and her son, which established a loving relationship between mother and son, while her death inspires him to change the world with his gadgets and inventions. Heck, her death was even noted when they showed a American hero memorial flag display signifying her passing and dedication as a loving police officer."
The brunette investigator nodded, "Yeah. I mean, that also counts for the overused dead parent joke. I mean, this goes above all Disney levels because while there's been some sad parent or sibling deaths in Disney movies such as Bambi, or Cinderella, or Aladdin, or The Lion King, or The Hunchback of Notre Dame, or Tarzan, or Atlantis, or Lilo & Stitch, or Brother Bear, or The Princess and the Frog, or Frozen, or Big Hero 6, or even Moana, they all had sad familial deaths that made us feel bad for those who are memorable or inspire us. But seeing a parent die in a Fox/Blue Sky film? Quite a bit Disney-ish, but that can count for one of the many dead parent cliches to the list."
"Yep, I guess so.", the elder sister of Ruby agreed, "Even Walter's mother was voiced by Rachel Brosnahan, who had played her most significant role in the Emmy-winning TV comedy show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And they only added her for one scene! One scene! That's about it! Why didn't this movie have more flashbacks with her? That would escalate the tearjerker level to 11 out of 10 if she stuck around for a few more scenes if the animators or writers would've made it. Rachel must've been busy with a lot of Mrs. Maisel. But still, seeing the son with her mother in the beginning of the film was touching."
Akane said, "Walter refuses Marcy's offer but it appears that the Agency Data Vault is under attack. As they pursue the Assassin drone with the stolen database, Walter has the chance to give Lance the chance to fly. Hey, that rhymes!", as the two girls see Sterling's bird form being thrown off the roof by Walter in an attempt to make him fly, as he closed his eyes just when he was about to fall to the ground, "Hmm, there's about two possibilities that the flight result will be. One, he'll fly by himself like how Shazam does it before, or the birds help him. The answer is...", before they saw the birds Lovey, Jeff and Crazy Eyes help Sterling by carrying him during the chase, "...the birds help him. D'uh! This is borrowing from Rio already!"
"But I'd have to admit, there is a pretty funny scene where Walter tries to use a Vespa in order to catch up with Sterling and his flock.", Yang admitted as she and Akane saw Beckett borrow a Vespa as he tries to ride it but accidentally causes it to crash and spontaneously explode, causing both girls to laugh.
The investigator snickered, "My friend Mika seems she reviews that kind of stuff, videogame-wise.", noting to Yang.
"I'll keep note on that.", the huntress said, "Even for when the birds help Sterling keep the database away from the Assassin drone, he looks like he's having the time of his life as a pigeon. But this chase scene has the catch of the century as we see Walter grab the database in time. Thank goodness, all that's left is to find where Killian is, and-", just before she and Akane see Killian stick out his robotic arm behind a Venice monument, which caused Walter to fall off the Vespa, "Didn't see that coming..."
The brunette says, "And just when this scene couldn't get any more darker, Killian almost kills Walter with his robot hand, until the boy unleashes his secret weapon... Breadcrumbs!"
"Breadcrumbs?", asked the blonde sister of Ruby until to be given a gesture by Akane, "Oh... Now I see.", as she then told, "So Walter uses the breadcrumbs to distract Killian with the biggest flock of birds possible that even Alfred Hitchcock would be jealous by it, as Beckett and Sterling escape once again in a mini-submarine."
Akane reacts when Walter goes on to say to Lance about his presumed succeeded theft of the database, "You know, I'm also starting to see your point. Of Walter being annoying to handle."
"Really?", Ruby's sister asked.
The investigator answered, "No.", continuing, "Sterling finds out that Walter put a tracker on Killian of his next location, as the two boys then make an shockingly interesting discovery.", as they watch over the snippet where Beckett hugs Lance fondingly so hard until the bird form of the secret agent laid an egg, as she and Yang shocked in unison, "No...don't tell us that means Sterling's a...", as Walter tells him that the body he turned into was in fact of a female pigeon's before the two girls reacted, "Noooo! Go! Avoid any genderbendings of this!"
"Meanwhile back on the boat, Marcy tries to look for more clues.", Yang recounts while seeing the frustrated Marcy telling Eyes and Ears to search for evidence or items that would have fingerprints on like a footprint, a candy wrapper or overpriced face lotion, the blonde mocking Marcy, "We need to keep a lookout for his three Grammy Awards as well! They must have some fingerprints to track him with!", resuming, "Back in the sub, we see Lance take the antidote and at last, he finally turns human again."
The brunette thought, "Let's see. The Princess and the Frog's back-to-human remaining runtime was only three minutes, The Emperor's New Groove had...a minute longer, and Brother Bear had about seven minutes. Here, the time remaining after Lance turns back to normal was about 27 minutes. Really? I mean, this early? That was a tad different to Disney's approach. But we're now at the end yet!"
"Lance and Walter finally arrive at the location Killian went to, which happens to be the same location that he hijacked at the first time. But Sterling refuses Beckett's help by insisting the I'm-doing-it-by-myself cliche as he tranquilizes him and sends him away to safety. The feel of this scene is kinda like the Solo movie at this very point, don't you agree? Even tops off with a direct Skyfall reference, just because...it's a spy flick! Nuff said!", the blonde outlines.
The investigator abstracted, "Unfortunately, Killian catches him in the act as we listen to his evil plan cliche.", as they see Killian tell him that if Lance could stop one and asks how he would stop a thousand as an army of drones appear before the agent, "What! It's Attack of the Clones all over again!", just before seeing Killian touch one part of his face as it cybernetically reveals that half of his face was of a cyborg, "Okay, maybe add a bit of Terminator to that..."
"Whilst we give our cyborg villain Killian a time to shine in this film, he does reveal to have quite an unexpecting deep backstory. He happens to originally be a leader of a terrorist group during a mentioned mission in Kyrgyzstan, when his army was almost decimated by the agency, thus beginning his revenge on them and maintaining the cybernetic look. Tell me if this wasn't a good-enough villain story. It fits so well for a supervillain origin, and it brilliantly shows off the rivalry between Sterling and Killian.", explained the huntress.
Akane then said, "But Killian sees the sub containing Walter and the bird flock in the area as he orders the drones to blow it to kingdom come... That...just got a whole lot deeper, guys.", as they saw the intense moment where Sterling pleads to Killian to not kill Walter by bombing the sub, with Akane acting as Sterling, "You need to stop, he still needs to do more Marvel movies! Uncharted as well!", just before the drones explode the sub and making it seem like Walter died, before Akane imitated Lance in this part, "I always believed you were the next Tony Stark..."
"But it looks like Walter survives the explosion as we partake in a strangely-awkward K-drama reference...", unsettled Yang.
The two of them then witness the part where Lance and Walter re-enact the K-drama the latter watched earlier as they had the woman and the man voices while the bird Jeff had the deep voice, respectfully and awkwardly. Unsettling music crept into Yang's mind as she cringes to this part with Akane.
Yang hoped, "Please...for the love of Gods... Do not let there be a slash ship coming on the fanbase. Oh my gods, they need to do something!", before seeing Walter hug Lance in the same scene, "Just stop, okay! That's quite enough.", before a later part of the movie's climax having Walter saying that one of his inventions are named Fifty Shades of Yay, "DO SOMETHING!", continuing, "Beckett then frees Sterling as the two of them go to confront Killian.", as the climax of the movie started with Lance confronting Killian as he claims that they're stuck in the good-guy bad-guy vortex.
"Pretty much like every other hero vs. villain movie.", the brunette nodded, "But the heroes use Beckett's gadgets against Killian as Marcy and the H.T.U.V agents arrive to help.", as it showed her meeting up with Sterling as she makes up an apology that she actually did in a second, Akane imitating Marcy, "I heard the message and I couldn't bring myself to believe in you. I figured for the most part."
The blonde climaxes, "So parts of this climax had some of the heroes using Walter's safe gadgets in order to defeat him. He must've brought some Nerf guns with him too, didn't he? Oh, and he used some bubbles against the enemy drones. FUCKING BUBBLES!", referencing one of her and team RWBY's previous commercial reviews; when the part where Marcy blinds Killian with a kaleidoscope gadget, Yang imagines Killian seeing the stargate light effects from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
"Of course, however, the truth serum caused Sterling to spill the beans about their plan to disable the drones as Killian attempts to flee, but Beckett tries to get a hold onto him.", said the investigator as they watched Killian tell Beckett that if he shuts off the drones then it'll kill them both, but not before claiming that he's no killer, before mocking the villain, "Mostly you'll be a savior, only because if you shut down my drones, you'll save a lot of people but you'll sacrifice ourselves as a result from it."
The huntress told, "But Walter uses his inflatable hug and deactivates the drones, thus saving the world. And oh, no! He's falling! What shall we do? Whoever will save him?", just before they observe Sterling back in his bird form, who was now flying successfuly, "Of course! He turns back into a pigeon! What are the odds? Why didn't he catch up with them quicker? Probably because this scene showed that Walter was in fact the true hero for all this. Yeah, tell that to the new star of the new MCU films."
"He and the birds land him to safety, and they managed to save the day...", Akane climaxed once more, "...only to be triple-fired the next scene after."
Yang sighs, "Yeah, pretty much how James Gunn went through when he was developing Guardians of the Galaxy 3.", noticing, "But hey, look on the bright side. Sterling is human again, except the part with the baby hand that Teen Titans Go Robin would be quite jealous about too."
"Good call.", praised the brunette, "After an inspiring lesson from Sterling however, he and Walter were both seemingly kidnapped the next minute. Who? The suspense is killing us!"
The blonde smirked, "And believe it or not, it's the agency.", as they look over the excerpt where Joy tells the boys that she and the agency were wrong about them and want to hire them again for their heroism, "Is the film telling us that although the two were fired that they were instantaneously hired again? It's like a boss telling a worker saying, 'I'm sorry, but because you disobeyed, you're fired!' 'Okay, that sucks-' 'No, wait. Just because we love you working here, we regret our decision to fire you. You're hired again.' 'Well, that's just swell.'"
"Lance and Walter are now given the chance to get their jobs back and work together as spies, in which they finally agree. At least Beckett made a new gadget that allows Sterling to change back and forth from human to pigeon and vice-versa! They work kinda well together, I guess...", concluded Akane.
Yang finished, "And that was Spies in Disguise. What could we say?", verdicting, "We both gotta say...it's actually kind of a fun spy movie."
Then, the two of them made their final opinion for the film with Yang saying;
"Seeing this was the first Blue Sky Studios film under the Disney management, I'm very surprised by how the film turned out. Sure, it does have a lot in common with some Disney tropes and cliches, but it handles it in its own unique way within the spy genre. The performances of Will Smith and Tom Holland were dynamic, the animation was great, the music acted as a tribute to classic spy films back in the day, and the humor...I could tell that sometimes it was good, other times it was bad. But overall, it was a good animated flick."
Akane continued her opinion, "For me, I believe there were some parts of this film that turned out pretty well done. Particularly this includes the action sequences and complex backstories, although there were a couple scenes that were...a bit inappropriate or scenes that would turn out to be flat-out funny. But in that case, it must be the best Blue Sky Studios film since their last film Ferdinand. Now let's hope their next film Nimona turns out pretty good as well. The showrunner of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is gonna have her time to shine!"
"Indeed she will. Gods, that scene was amazing.", relieved Yang as she referenced the Catradora kiss in the last She-Ra episode in the Netflix show, "Anyways, I'm Yang Xiao Long..."
"...and this is Akane Tsunemori."
"We remember it so you don't have to," Yang finished as she and Akane left, finishing the review at last.
