A/N: Takes place a few hours after the events of the last review, Rogue One.

In this thirty-fourth non-canon review, Ruby, Yang, Blake and Weiss wake up in the middle of the night after their arrival in Edo Island and the Samurai Kingdom, as the four of them decide to review a movie before they go back to sleep, which is a Tom Cruise science-fiction action movie based on a light novel/manga that revolves around time loops. This begs them the question: Is this action flick worth dying for in the end or is it a hit-and-miss underrated film?

In Memory of Bill Paxton

EDO ISLAND
SAMURAI KINGDOM
4:30 AM

Ruby suddenly woke up after having a peaceful sleep, in a washitsu room that she's sharing with Yang, Blake and Weiss.

It wasn't a nightmare or a loud noise that woke her up, but rather a usual disruption in sleep that makes people wake up in shorter periods.

Yang, Blake and Weiss seem to undergo the same as Ruby, as they slowly woken up.

"Ruby... What time is it?", Yang yawned.

The red-black-haired huntress groaned, checking her Scroll for the time.

It was approximately 4:30 AM when she looked.

"It's 4:30 AM. Good gods, we've only slept for a few hours! And we had a very great day spending time with our friends...", exhausted Ruby.

Blake sleepishly said, "Not to mention our first meeting with Baiken and the other inhabitants of Edo Island's Samurai Kingdom. The Rogue One review we did was pretty awesome."

"Even her woman cave was filled with memorabilia.", wearily told Weiss.

Yang fatigues, "Why, oh, why do we wake up in unsuspecting times? We should at least go back to sleep."

"Strangely, I don't feel like sleeping just yet. It's like I'm wide-awake...", the leader of team RWBY deciphered.

Blake and Weiss both said, "Same here."

"In that case, maybe I do feel kind of sleepless too...", atypically pondered Yang.

Ruby thought over this, "Part of me wants us to do another review before we go back to sleep...but I'm not quite sure if it's okay..."

"We'll follow your lead, Ruby.", Blake said assuringly to Ruby caringly (which is one of her lines from RWBY: Volume 7), "I'm sure one can't hurt. At least afterwards we'll go right back to sleep."

Weiss sweetly tells her Faunus girlfriend, "That's the plan. That's...what I was gonna say."

"Well...for the sake of entertainment, I don't see why not.", Yang replies, "So, which film do you think we'll review before we go back to sleep?", yawning.

Ruby decided, "I'm pretty sure Netflix has something.", as she turns on the TV in their washitsu guest room, activating the Netflix app as she searches up another movie, "I was thinking we should do a Tom Cruise movie."

"You mean one of his mixed-reception movies? Is it Rock of Ages?", Blake guessed.

Weiss postulates, "Knight and Day?"

"Oblivion?", Yang hypothesized.

The leader of team RWBY considers, "I was thinking about doing the Tom Cruise movie based on this light novel called All You Need is Kill, but the movie in particularly called Edge of Tomorrow.", as she searched the movie up on Netflix...

...but sadly it wasn't available in the region.

"What? It's not available?!", saddened Ruby, "Why does Netflix have to remove films unlike Disney+ every month that people are hoping to watch? It's like removing the MCU films on a streaming service and that it would take a long time to see it again on there! But good thing there's Disney+."

Yang theorizes, "So I suppose Edge of Tomorrow is not a Disney film?"

"It isn't. It's by Warner Bros.", Weiss verified.

Blake questioned, "It was in 3D, and it's based on a light novel...? I don't know if it will turn out well, but it's worth a shot."

"Now how are we going to watch it now?", Ruby groaned in disappointment before she had an idea pop up in her mind, "Wait. Remember that woman cave that she showed us last night?"

Yang, Blake and Weiss answers, "Yeah?"

"So since she has this big movie collection on Blu-Ray, 3D Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD, maybe she has a copy somewhere.", suggested Ruby.

Her elder blonde sister realizes, "Actually, that's a great idea. If it's not on Netflix, go with physical."

"Baiken's sleeping, though. Don't you think we can wait until morning?", Weiss unsurely told.

Blake confidently told her heiress girlfriend, "I'm sure we'll be quiet. But since she's a powerful female samurai, hopefully she doesn't wake up and try to attack us in the dead of night."

"Well, whether or not if she's a heavy sleeper, chances are we will not disturb anyone's sleep.", Ruby said after hesitation.

Yang then sighs, "Alright then. But if she tries to attack us if we wake her up, you'll take responsiblity. Not saying you're a bad teammate friend or a bad sister or anything."

"Alright. Let's go. We're not wearing shoes right now, so let's sneak up to the woman cave like we're real ninjas. Like kunoichi to be precise.", the red-black-haired girl anticipates as the four of them then left the room.

They snuck upstairs in the castle to the floor where Baiken and her acquaintances are sleeping, making sure they don't make any noise.

"Shh...", Ruby shushed, quietly saying, "Try not to make any noise.", as they eventually entered Baiken's bedroom.

They slowly and quietly open the shoji door, and once they enter, Yang then helped close the door as silent as possible, while they saw Baiken slumbering on her Alaskan King-like bed, lying barefoot (since she removed her boot-like sandals in her room) and sound asleep.

Slowly, the four of them tiptoed and walked silently across the room to the curtain leading to the woman cave room.

"Hey...", Ruby quietly asked as she heard something in there, "...what's that sound?"

Team RWBY snuck their way into the woman cave room through the curtain...

...and they find Athena Cykes and Maka Albarn playing a game called Dark Souls on the PS4, playing quietly and taking turns through many multiple deaths in the game.

Once dying in Dark Souls once again at the end of her turn, Maka then swore under her breath as she was furious by the difficulty.

"Athena? Maka? What's happening?", Ruby asked the two, "What game are you playing?"

Athena greeted, "Oh. Hi, Ruby. Me and Maka were just playing some Dark Souls for a bit on Baiken's PS4. You weren't kidding when you said Baiken's woman cave was amazing, because her video game collection as big as mine, on the classical side. I mean, look at this memorabilia though! We both woke up a half-hour ago at 4AM since we share the same washitsu guest room with Tsubaki and Trucy, but we couldn't sleep. So maybe just a little playthrough would do the job. I hate it when these sleep disruptions happen."

"Same here. We were thinking about reviewing the Tom Cruise movie Edge of Tomorrow, which is actually based on a light novel, so we hope to go back to sleep afterwards. Unfortunately it wasn't on Netflix, so we thought about using the physical copy to watch and review it.", Yang reminded.

Maka says, "Oh, you mean that 3D movie that's based on the light novel/manga All You Need Is Kill? Yeah, we looked through Baiken's movie collection. She has a copy of the movie in a Blu-Ray 3D combo pack with regular Blu-Ray and DVD disc formats."

"Very convenient. Would it be great if we review the movie for a bit before we all go back to sleep?", politely says Blake and Weiss.

Athena nods, "Okay. We've died in the game three times already which is starting to feel like a pain in the ass due to its difficulty, but I think it would be fine to switch games."

"We found out Baiken has a Nintendo 64, so hopefully she won't mind if we play Super Mario 64 for a bit. We'll be quiet.", Maka suggests as she and Athena then proceed to turn off the game and go off to the further part of the woman cave room to the 50-inch TV where the VHS player, VHS rewinder, PS1 and the Nintendo 64 was.

Using the 65-inch TV which was already put on low volume for the time being by Athena and Maka, team RWBY went over to Baiken's Blu-Ray/3D/4K movie collection where they find out the 3D Blu-Ray/Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack of Edge of Tomorrow, before they take the regular Blu-Ray disc out and placing it in the 3D/4K Blu-Ray player.

"Why didn't you choose 3D?", smirked Yang to her beloved younger huntress sister.

Ruby answered her elder sister, "I thought 2D Blu-Ray would be okay for now. If the movie turns out very well as we may expect, we could give it another go in 3D. But that will have to wait."

"Good choice.", Weiss said, feeling proud for her fellow teammate.

Blake hoped, "I just hope this movie isn't as bad. By the looks of it, it's pretty damn awesome for a science-fiction action flick, even for the 3D industry alongside Gravity, The Hobbit or Avatar."

"I bet it will be fairly good by the end. Now let's start.", Ruby said as the movie's main menu was displayed; "Hello, I'm Ruby..."

"...I'm Yang..."

"...I'm Blake..."

"...and I'm Weiss."

Team RWBY say in unison, "We remember it so you don't have to."

"Speaking of remembering, you remember that science-fiction action film that Tom Cruise starred in years ago? And that it's actually one of the big-budget blockbusters that is based on a manga or a light novel? Well, although we don't think it's a good sign in recent cinema...but by the looks of it, this one might say otherwise above the rest.", Ruby began.

Team RWBY's Commentary of Edge of Tomorrow (Part 1)

Yang says, "Edge of Tomorrow was based on a popular light novel/manga called All You Need Is Kill created by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, and the film is helmed by Doug Liman, the director who did The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and the critically panned Jumper. Although the movie recieved 370.5 million dollars over a budget of 178 million in the box office, it was overtaken for the number one spot by the famous teen romantic drama The Fault in Our Stars, which gotten less money in total but gained a larger fanbase during opening weekend."

"Surprisingly, the film gotten a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%. 91%?! By the gods, how the tables have literally turned!", Blake surprised, "The film, on the other hand, has a premise that not only involves an alien invasion, badass weaponry, and futuristic World War II themes, but also the use of time travel. Gee, this is starting to have Nolan vibes."

Weiss continues, "Not only this was listed as a science-fiction action film, but it also had a bit of comedy sprinkled all over. Now since after Tom Cruise's other action flicks like Oblivion and Jack Reacher came out before this film, it looks like we may be in for a wild ride with Cruise with a ton of action and badass imagery."

"So let's go into the time loop and prepare ourselves to Live, Die, and Repeat, this is Edge of Tomorrow.", commenced the red-black-haired huntress.

Edge of Tomorrow

Ruby starts off, "The film opens with a news montage reporting around an extraterrestrial invasion in Europe by an alien race known as the Mimics. In the year 2020, the United Defense Force established a combat alliance to help destroy the alien threat with mech suits, and are led by a female soldier named Rita Vrataski, played by Emily Blunt, who had achieved victory in Verdun."

"We're also introduced to William Cage, played by Tom Cruise, who is a recently-attached major from the United States of the media relations department sent to a meeting with the British general Brigham, played by Brendan Gleeson.", the blonde huntress summarized.

The four girls then watch over the scene where the general Brigham tells the major Cage that though a lot of soldiers will die tomorrow in the battle on Normandy Beach, and that when the smoke clears and the body bags start coming home, people tend to look for someone to blame like himself.

The black-haired Faunus mentioned, "Or mostly the invading alien race. I don't wanna get started on all that World War II fiasco.", before synopsizing, "Cage was then given orders by General Brigham to film the battle on the coastline, but apparently he doesn't like the idea of it all due to having no combat experience. Filming footage in the battlefield? Isn't that how multi Academy Award winner John Ford made films during his days in World War II? That's kind of a big risk for what's to come.", while they examine the part where Cage says that he can't stand the sight of blood but not so much as a papercut.

"PG in a nutshell.", the white-haired heiress responded to this scene, "Cage declines the general's order and it seems like he lets him go.", before she, Ruby, Yang and Blake heard in the next snippet where Brigham orders security to arrest Cage once he was leaving, "Wait, what? Arrest him for what? All he did was just decline and now, just now you're willing to arrest him just for denying one thing he doesn't want to do? I know Cage threatened to blame him if the invasion fails, but why?"

The leader of team RWBY says, "Does he believe it's insubordination? Does he really go this far for getting him an Oscar for Best Documentary or something? Maybe he just arrests people for death threats every once in a while.", as they watch the clip again, with Ruby imagining Carlton Drake from the 2018 film Venom saying 'Have a nice life'; Ruby continues, "William is then arrested and wakes up to find himself at Heathrow Airport, where he meets no one other than Master Sergeant Farrell, played by Bill Paxton, who I have to admit that ironically he has his Aliens role switched with Cruise's character."

"Man, the hair and makeup also did a trick, didn't they? Almost as close to the makeup they did on him in Nightcrawler if I may add.", Yang included as they watch the following part with Cage meeting Farrell at the base for the first time, before making a Bill Paxton line, "Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen!", also saying, "So William is introduced to a lowdown Suicide Squad-knockoff named J Squad for the first time but they do not treat him with open arms and happen to...eat cards. And they say cards may be bad for you to eat.", continuing, "It's also revealed that he has been demoted to a private by the general for being a deserter, leaving Cage to be ordered to be combat ready for the invasion. Gee, we've never seen the cowardice side of Tom Cruise before. Mostly he's badass in all of his movies, so that's a first."

Blake replied when they watch over a snippet where Farrell tells them that Cage may be under a delusion that he doesn't belong with them and that if he tries to run then they would feel free to dissaude him, "'Or especially shoot him in sight if he goes too far. He belongs with us now!'", outlining, "The next day, Cage and the others suit up while we get a sweet tease of Rita Vrataski going into battle.", as it shows Rita exiting the base with her squadmates wearing skull-painted helmets with one of the people flirting with her before recieving a punch to the abdomen when he about to finish his sentence 'It's the Full Metal...'; the Faunus imitated Rita when she punched the guy, "Bitch, please!"

"We then see Cage and the rest of the soldiers fly over to the invasion at Normandy Beach.", describes Weiss as she and her fellow teammates see the J-Squad members teasing Cage to be careful, "Oh, don't worry. Seeing how this will be a time loop movie, he will watch his back out there.", admitting also, "And I also have to notify, with all honesty, that the action sequence that follows is actually kind of intense and very similar to a war film...except with mech suits and aliens as the opposing enemy. You could tell by this scene with Cage when he was falling into the battlefield which would later inspire the horror war film Overlord, the galore of visual effects happening all around, the certain war references to Saving Private Ryan, and we even get a first look of the mimics' design."

The red-black-haired huntress and her blonde elder huntress sister supported her friend's opinion, "Yeah. The Mimics look like the Sentinels from the Matrix series if they're doused with the obsidian version of the Watchers from Noah.", continuing, "On the other hand, we also got to see a badass fight scene with Rita Vrataski for the first time. And I do mean, she was really badass.", witnessing the part where Cage meets Rita for the first time in the battlefield as the latter looks down at him, "I'd be like, 'Oh my god, I'm your greatest fan ever! You're such a fighter, you inspired me up until now! Can I have your autogra-'", before the movie had a blast kill Rita all of a sudden during this part, "NOOO! Rita! Why did she have to die?! She was promised more screentime than we thought she would!"

"Cage tries to flee, but he runs into Farrell. He brings him to the rest of J-Squad to their trench to prepare the attack on the next wave. If Farrell at some point says at one point in this movie, 'Game over, man! Game over!', then his homage would be fulfilled.", the Faunus and the heiress says before when Cage in the movie tries to warn J Squad when seing a Mimic rising from beneath the sand in the middle of the trench whilst he tries to turn his safety off; Yang then imagines the scene from It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown where Linus tells Sally 'There he is! There he is! It's the Great Pumpkin!' over this scene right before the Mimic rising from the sand attacks the J-Squad; "But unfortunately the J-Squad has been killed off before Cage kills the mimic, yet a big blue Mimic comes in and tries to kill our hero, but Cage manages to blow it up."

That was when the girls inevitably saw Cage in the movie was doused by the Mimic's black acidic blood with a somehow-CGI model of him, dissolving him and melting his face, turning his eyes completely black, and ultimately killing him.

Ruby, Yang, Blake and Weiss were left shocked with different expressions on their wide-eyed faces of fear, surprise and unsettlement.

Ruby's silver eyes look to both sides as she gradually spasms when she was about to say something, but then casually says, "I have some questions to make."; before ranting, "Seriously, what the fuck was up with the violence in this scene?! I'm sorry but although we know this was a rated PG-13 movie, why did this scene look like it almost got the movie an R rating?! THE LITTLE KIDS WOULD BE SCREAMING DOWN THE AISLES AFTER WATCHING THIS PART! Was this intentional to have a PG-13 movie scene go this gory? Though the scene only lasts for a few seconds, there wasn't much blood, and it's already been done in Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Temple of Doom, but it still looks like it would scare the shit out of people!"

"Second, why does he look like a poorly CGI model all of a sudden? He looks like the leftover CGI models from World War Z and R.I.P.D., and they would both have awful CGI models but have different critical reception! Still, we can't get over how Cruise's character looks in this scene! He looks like CGI Jeff Bridges if he was covered in Squidward's Ink Lemonade!", Yang argued as she showed pictures of Jeff Bridges' CGI likeness from the beginning of Tron: Legacy and a still from the Spongebob Squarepants episode Ink Lemonade showing Squidward's ink nosebleeds going into several cups and jugs, "I even know what the alien blood represents, it may be like acidic Xenomorph blood mixed with The Matrix's silver goo, but it's total fucking nightmare fuel!"

Blake ponders, "And lastly, we wonder how Tom Cruise responded to this scene on the script when making this film. I bet he would talk to the director and they'd be like, 'Okay, Mr. Liman, so it says on the script that Cage's first death... was when he blew up a blue alien and drenched in its acidic blood?' 'Yes, Mr. Cruise.' 'Oh. Well... Actually, I don't feel like doing this scene. The thought of it is a bit uncomfortable for me to process, so...why don't you do a CGI model of myself to do the work on that part? I know you're a great director and all, but besides that, I would love to do the rest of the movie if that's okay with you. Just please don't make it look too scary or make it look like an R-rated film like some of my other movies, okay? So, no thanks to this scene and...yeah, let's continue filming.'", with Weiss, Ruby and Yang nodding to this part; the next excerpt had Cage suddenly waking up back at Heathrow Airport with a jolting scream.

"Cage suddenly wakes up however, finding himself reliving the day before the battle.", synopsizes Weiss, while the four girls observe the scene with Cage telling Farrell that he isn't gonna believe what he was about to tell him after he recited and remembered what Farrell said to him when Cage first came, with the latter saying he's not, "Imagine Bill Paxton's Farrell would say, 'What? Are you saying that I'm going to die by a stroke in a few years? Ha! You wish!', but then it shows his gravestone with an engraving saying 'You told me so.'. But honestly, we all do respect Bill Paxton's passing. Your game will never be over.", the four girls putting their hands together and showing respect for the deceased actor; the Schnee girl continues, "And with that, Cage goes back to the invasion the next day in which he meets up with Rita once again, but she takes his battery pack and leaves him to die."

As the red-black-haired huntress and her teammates spectate when Cage swore 'HOLY FU-' before getting killed by a Mimic and then waking up back at Heathrow for the third time, she imagined Captain America from Avengers: Age of Ultron saying 'Language!'; Ruby then says out loud, "Trust me, if the F word is used again, it would've clearly gotten that R rating."; reviewing, "Cage discovers that he's waking up the same day all over again, and he tries to warn everyone but to no avail.", as they watch the following excerpt with Cage casually saying to the J Squad that they have to listen to him and that their very lives are at risk, only to cut to Cage the next day showing him having duct tape taped to his mouth; team RWBY couldn't help but snicker.

"My apologies, but we believe that the comedic style they're with this is actually put to an extent!", the blonde elder sister of Ruby explains, "Of course in every action movie, there has to be some humorous moments added to the dramatic tone. Although sometimes it failed, yet sometimes it worked, this movie's use of comedy definitely works its magic. We know it's desperately trying not too much of a comedy, but the screenwriters seemed to show promise. Like for example, when Cage goes through a few more loops during the battle in order to same someone and reach Rita, he ends up getting killed a couple times before advancing forward. The film also has a very similar manner to the Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons, not because of its use of cartoon violence or comedic slapstick, but also the numerous various attempts this specific character had to go through.", examining, "And speaking of Rita, William does manage to meet her in the battlefield as she finds out about what's happening to him."

The black-haired Faunus and her friends observe the scene when Rita tell Cage to come find her when he wakes up before they are engulfed in an explosion, ergo causing Cage to wake up back at Heathrow yet again, "That was a nice word of advice. What were you expecting she would be? A seance?", describing, "Cage then sneaks his way out during P.T. training to go meet Rita at the training facility, who tells her everything and she...instantaneously says yes to it. I knew she's like a seance.", also noting, "She takes Cage to a Mimic specialist named Dr. Carter, who tells him all about the Mimics and the big blue variants called Alphas, and that the Alpha's blood that killed him during the battle had granted him the ability to travel back in time through time loops, and they are powered by a main core known as the Omega.", referencing, "Hey, if they pay a homage to Alpha and Omega, we may be against it."

"Rita also revealed that she once had the same power, but lost it in a blood transfusion.", the white-haired heiress explains as she furthermore told, "Now, just to describe... Time loops have been an usual plot device in several films and shows both in the past and in recent times. For films like Groundhog Day and Happy Death Day, these characters undergo specific points of time in which they are stuck in time loops while they try to figure out how to break the loop and solve their dire situations, while Doctor Strange also does this as a key plot point during the film's climax. On the anime side, it's also been used in such works like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Steins;Gate and Re:Zero. These help the main characters strategize and make room for improvement while they too solve problems that sometimes end up getting them killed numerously. It's a very dark, yet very clever kind of science fiction time travel element they were going for."

Ruby carried on, "But pretty much as clever as when they need Cage to go through more loops to find out where the location of the Omega may be. That means it's time for combat training!", as the film had Cage at one point asking Rita if there would be a way to transfer his ability with her, even with her dismissing sex as an option; "Wow, we didn't expect that to go through many of those drastic measures. Her domineering pretty much reminds of Terence Flecher from Whiplash, but it's more awesome in a way and definitely not abusive."

"And I have to also admit that the editing in this film is incredibly spot on. At some instances instead of Cage waking up after dying in some scenes, it cuts to a later scene without having to repeat itself later on. It even matches the alternate title and tagline of the movie 'Live, Die, Repeat'! Take a look at this scene for example when Cage has to go through many loops to excel by training harder.", Yang mentions as the movie showed the part where Cage was hit by the training mechanical Mimics as Rita says 'Again' over and over, while it also had when Rita shoots him with Cage waking up and the drill sergeant yelling 'On your feet, maggot!' many times and at one point adding 'I'm trying to be nice to you, maggot! Now move!'; Ruby's elder sister laughed, "Tell me if it would've been nominated for Best Film Editing. Whiplash got that, but this sure would've got more recognition."

Blake says, "Eventually William gets a vision after dying at one point, as he discovers that the Omega may be at a dam in Germany. That's good, now that he deciphered that, all he has to do is strategize how to get past the battlefield and they're all good!", synopsizing, "But it turns out that it was difficult for Cage as some of his many attempts had Rita losing her life and he decides to say 'fuck it' and leave the training base.", the next excerpt showing Cage in a bar as two people were chatting about what the Mimics' intentions were, as William despondently told that they're coming and there's no difference; the Faunus imitates, "And so here I am, drinking my sorrows away like any other war hero would..."

"But he finds out that the Mimics will invade London if he doesn't go to the battlefield. So, what does he do? He excels in his training and successfully gets them across the battlefield, even saving Rita and the J Squad's lives in the process. Gee, I guess he doesn't do do-or-die situations like that. It's like someone who gets a D in chemistry suddenly gets an A+ later on. Great refinement, Cruise. Really great refinement.", Weiss elucidates, before a scene showing the J Squad and one of the members Riff asking Farrell what the new guy's name was again; the Schnee girl answered, "His name was William Cage, but you know him better as Tom Cruise.", before the first part of RWBY's Edge of Tomorrow review ends.

To be continued...
