Team RWBY's Commentary of Edge of Tomorrow (Part 2 - Final)
"Cage and Vrataski make it across and decide to lie low in a barn, where they find a helicopter they can use to go to the dam.", Ruby summarized before she, Yang, Blake and Weiss watch the part where Rita considers on using her gun to restart Cage back where he woke up, making the latter jolt, "Oh, gods! Please don't kill me again! We came all this way and you're thinking of killing me? What is your major malfunction?", another clip from the film showing William warning Rita that if she starts the helicopter engine, then she would die and tells her there is a Mimic buried twenty yards from them; "Wait, is he at the point of predicting what's going to happen there? We don't know. Maybe it's some sort of premonition instincts or something. He hasn't even reached this point beforehand!"
Yang summarizes, "And so, a Mimic ambushes them when Rita tries to start up the helicopter, causing it to crash and killing her once again. Cage then decides to go on without her in the next loop and travel to the dam alone. There, he suddenly discovers that the Omega wasn't there anymore and is suddenly ambushed.", while she and the other three girls watching the film saw Cage encounters a Mimic in the dam as the former tells it to kill him before another Alpha appears, and wounds him in order to strip him of his time-looping ability; "Oh my gods, this is almost R-rated material! Game over, man! Game over- Oh, Paxton should've said that in this movie.", as the following snippet had Cage evading the aliens as he drowned himself in a hard-to-reach place.
"After Cage drowns himself, he tells Rita and Dr. Carter in the next loop that the dam isn't there. So, there's only one logical thing to do... Retrieve a device known as a transponder that'll help locate the true location of the Omega, which happens to be in the possessions of General Brigham. Yeah, tell him everything. We guess he may sound reluctant to the idea of Cage reliving the same day countless times, but...here's hoping.", Blake shrugged, "Cage and Rita infiltrate the Ministry of Defence where they confront the general Brigham in order to convince him in bringing them the prototype."
Whilst seeing and hearing in the movie when Cage talked to the general's secretary about her personal information, Weiss reacts, "By the gods, what are you like? A psychic now? Haven't realized the Alpha's blood can do that too besides time looping!", with the girls witnessing the part when Cage retrieves the prototype and Rita then asks him what they would do now, with the former guessing that they haven't gotten this far, as the Schnee girl imitated, "I presume that all that has to be done right now is to put it to good use, then we'll destroy the Omega.", condensing, "But nope. The two get the prototype, but they are suddenly ambushed by the guards outside."
Then, as guards aim at the two heroes at gunpoint in the movie, Rita pulls out her gun and shoots Cage before the movie cuts away to a car chase scene with them still retrieving the prototype.
"Wait, wait, wait... One thing confused us. Did they start over again in order to steal the transponder, or did she fake his death and undergo a car chase scene? Literally the first time we've seen it got me there, but we gotta say the first option is more logical.", the red-black-haired huntress confuses after seeing this snippet; they saw Rita use the transponder on Cage, as the next few moments had Cage's eyes turning completely black again; Ruby shudders, "Ohh... The looks of his eyes make it look like we're watching a sci-fi horror film..."
Ruby's elder blonde sister epitomized, "William discovers that the true location of the Omega is located deep within The Louvre in Paris, finally getting the destination for them to destroy it. But before they can do that, they were stopped and rendered themselves injured.", while the next scene shows Cage waking up in the hospital afterwards, opening his completely black eyes before the blackness disappeared, "We really hope we don't see it again later on in the film.", also noting, "Unfortunately Cage had recieved a blood transfusion and had lost his ability to reset the day, meaning that he'll die for real if he fails to destroy the Omega."
"So this calls for Plan B as they decide to go back to Heathrow to recruit J Squad in travelling to Paris for the final battle.", the black-haired Faunus affirms while they spectate the snippet showing Cage meeting up with two of the J Squad members, as William was about to explain what happened before it cuts to one of the two J Squad members explaining to his fellow members about his memorizations and what he experienced in his past loops, "Wow, he sure believed that in under one scene. He must be a believer after all...then why didn't he find out about this beforehand?", detailing afterwards, "Rita then leads Cage and the J Squad members en route to Paris, where they would find the Omega."
The white-haired heiress adds as the film had the J Squad members discussed during their transport why they cannot kill an Alpha or else the day will reset and that they wouldn't be having this conversation, "Or else we wouldn't remember why we're even here in the first place!"; saying thereon, "Our heroes are suddenly ambushed and it caused them to crash. Luckily, they survived which was actually hardcore at this point, seeing how this is like Uncharted or Dark Souls or whatever other game that involves hardcore survival..."
"Thanks for mentioning that.", Maka Albarn says to team RWBY when hearing Uncharted and Dark Souls whilst she was playing Super Mario 64 with Athena Cykes on the 50-inch TV at the other side of the woman cave the six girls were in while team RWBY was still watching the movie on the 65-inch flat-screen TV.
The Schnee girl resumes, "...and our main heroes use their crashed vehicle to make it to the Louvre while the remaining J Squad members sacrifice themselves.", just before seeing two of the remaining J Squad members blowing themselves up as self-sacrifices against the incoming Mimics.
"No! Not the comedic relief characters! They were in minimal scenes yet they've shown to have brought promising humor...", mourns Ruby, "In the meantime, Cage and Rita finally reach the Louvre where they encounter another Alpha guarding the pool to where the Omega is.", whilst another excerpt had them both hiding from the Alpha as Rita ensures Cage that one of them has to destroy it, giving him a belt of grenades and thanking him for getting her this far before inevitably kissing him; the leader of team RWBY reacts, "Ah, there you go. The usual 'love interest kisses protagonist' moment. Well done, guys... Except the fact that the two actors have a 20-year age difference."
Yang climaxes, "And wouldn't you know it, Rita sacrifices her life to give Cage the chance to go into the pool, successfully destroying the Omega in the process.", with the movie exampling Cage going underwater before getting struck by the Alpha, as the belt of grenades fall into the Omega and Cage revealing he had pulled all the pins from it; team RWBY imagines the quote 'Hasta la vista, baby.' from Terminator 2: Judgement Day playing over this scene just as the Omega in the film explodes, "With the Omega destroyed, all the Mimics and the Alpha all die out instantaneously at the cost of Cage's life. However, this time he sinks into the Omega's blood, undergoes the same thing he did with the Alpha's blood, and..."
Suddenly as Cage was seen being submerged in the Omega's blood, he suddenly wakes up back in the helicopter that was transporting him to where he were to meet with the general at the beginning of the film.
"...it was all a dream. Or was it?", inevitably says the blonde huntress.
Blake perplexes, "So...the Alpha's blood sent him a day prior, so...does that mean the Omega brought him back two days prior? Did it actually bring us back to the beginning of the movie or make it like a dream or something, or- Please tell us what is going on! It's starting to feel like a Christopher Nolan ending by the concept! Geez, this is confusing!", summing up the ending, "Of course, Cage suddenly wakes up at the helicopter en route to where he was going to meet Brigham, but it's shown that the timeline had changed. The armies are advancing forward without further resistance, Cage has retained his Major status, Farrell and the J Squad are fine back at the Heathrow base, and Rita is revealed to be alive and well."
The final scene had the oblivious Rita meeting with Major William Cage again, with her asking what he wants with her, before the latter chuckled in amusement.
"And we're not even kidding... That's where it ends.", concludes Weiss before the girls were baffled, "What kind of ending is that supposed to be? We know the final act of the movie was defensible and smart, but how can they think of an ending this oddly disappointing? There would've been a beautiful moment between Cage and Rita, where he may have probably told her everything about how he finally destroyed the Omega in the other loop that would've had an emotional conclusion to the movie. But you know...it just ends anyway."
Ruby agrees, "This has got to be one of the most underwhelming conclusions ever in a movie! And we hope the manga adaptation has a better ending than this! But wait... As a matter of fact...", before getting up from the couch in Baiken's woman cave where she and her teammates were sitting on as they watched the film, going over to Baiken's book and manga collection on one shelf, finding the manga All You Need is Kill and reading through as Yang, Blake and Weiss came over to read with their team leader, "The manga...looks actually different from the movie...and in a way, it's actually greater."
The leader of team RWBY reads through as she began telling what happened in the manga in contrast to the movie.
"The manga, surprisingly, was significantly much different from the movie itself. William Cage's adapted character was known as Keiji Kiriya, who was very younger and was never a Major unlike the film, with the movie character's surname Cage being a nickname Keiji used called Killer Cage. Instead of Western Europe being the main setting like in the film, the manga takes place in Japan and the invasion force has widespread worldwide instead of only the British state. And it wasn't an Alpha's blood that gave Keiji the power in this, it was tachyon particles. Yeah! Tachyon particles! It sounds scientific when you think about that. But the manga was in fact a more darker version of the story and that the violence and gore featured was more suitable for an R rating. Hell, even suicide played a part in it!", Ruby contrasted, "While the battle suits looked different and more similar to the Spartan suits in the Halo series..."
Maka hears this and remarked while continuing to play Super Mario 64 with Athena, "Thanks again, Ruby.", when the RWBY leader mentioned Halo.
"...the Mimics in the manga look more like Langoliers if they had Studio Ghibli teeth and spikes from an urchin.", notices Ruby.
Yang continued, "You may also notice there were some characters on the manga that actually had significant changes to the characters' identity, like Dr. Carter being a female Native American named Shasta Raylle, and Farrell having a first name unlike in the film when they referred to him as a master sergeant. And Rita... My god, doesn't she look beautiful? On the compliment side of it all. Speaking of whom, her backstory was more explained and actually given more depth and character development than the film attempted to accomplish. On the humorous side, there were also some very beautiful and touching moments during the story amidst the dark elements the story conveyed."
"But what we can't bare to learn was the climax that followed. During the final battle, Rita fought against Keiji because though the tachyon particles make them become antennae Mimics in the manga, one of them had to die in order to stop the loop; this forces them to a fight to the death and ultimately letting Keiji win, mercifully sacrificing Rita's life. Although Keiji reigns victorious against the Mimics in the end and reclaiming Japan, he continues his fight on in the war against the Mimics and paints his battle suit blue in honor of Rita, her death inspiring him to follow her path of victory.", Blake told before asking, "How did they not make an anime off of this?"
Weiss consummated, "We know this sounds darker than the movie, but...it also feels very deep and complex. And we know you might think we prefer the manga, but the movie is still very good for how it is along with its premise and story in comparison to the light novel. We pretty much liked how they ended the story, that there would be some ramifications and resolutions that follow after the hardest of battles, even at the cost of some important lives. But nope, the movie's got an Inception ending instead! They had to go for the 'spinning top' ending, which kinda breaks through the laws of reality and time, but in a more underwhelming way to wrap it up!"
"We also heard that was an alternative ending that was suggested by future Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie, one of the screenwriters of the film, where the Mimics reset the day when the heroes were en route to The Louvre in Paris, and then ambushing them which would've ended the film. However McQuarrie himself got cold feet from this idea, so he had to come up with a lighter ending.", Ruby and Yang points out.
Blake and Weiss sum up, "So despite that...confusing ending, the movie was overall...kinda awesome for the most part.", verdicting it.
Team RWBY then said their overall review of the movie;
"To sum up, Edge of Tomorrow is a very smart, clever and visceral film. Seeing how this was based off a light novel and manga, we liked the concept of how they brought this idea to full realization. The performances were good, the direction by Doug Liman was fluent, the music was intense, the editing was vigorously perfect, and the visual effects are...not half-bad. Even the premise of the time travel ability was much more different than how the manga approached it.", Ruby verified.
Yang then said, "There were a few parts that somehow made us uncomfortable, while other parts were just so damn spectacular. The comedic humor was used to a beneficial extent and the action sequences were incredible. Every second of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's chemistry on-screen was explosive. It had a soldier-mentor kind of relationship, and it also shows depth and collaboration between the two heroes."
"We know that the ending wasn't as perfect as we expected it would be, but it doesn't mean it makes the movie bad because of it. In fact, it's so good and visually stunning that it doesn't deserve to be called a horrible movie.", Blake considers, "Edge of Tomorrow may be a bit underrated to movie buffs in general, but the effects, editing, performances and premise might say otherwise for some science-fiction films."
Weiss prefers, "But hey, while it may be than greater than other manga movie adaptations such as Ghost in the Shell, Alita: Battle Angel, or...", before team RWBY thought of the movie Dragonball Evolution which made them hesitate for a moment as Weiss moved on with another example, "...Speed Racer...", continuing, "...this one still stands above the rest as also one of the best time travel films of all time, and we're happy to consider this as one of Tom Cruise's badass movies in recent years."
"I'm Ruby..."
"...I'm Yang..."
"...I'm Blake..."
"...and I'm Weiss."
Team RWBY says, "We remember it so you don't have to.", before they got up from the couch after they finished the movie review.
They went over to the other part of the room where Athena and Maka were still playing Super Mario 64 together on the Nintendo 64, where they were almost finished with it for the night.
"Hey.", Athena greets, "How was Edge of Tomorrow?"
Ruby shrugs, "It wasn't half bad, but the manga it's based on was as greater as the movie could get."
"Now that we digested that, we're now feeling sleepy... As if it actually helped us go back to sleep.", Yang admits.
Athena nods, "Same with both me and Maka. Played some Super Mario 64 before we go back to sleep and it seemed it did the trick. It's already past 5:30 AM, so we better hurry back to bed if we're gonna sleep well."
"Yeah," Maka yawned, "That was a long day, so whether or not if we get good sleep, we'll at least get some rest.", as she and Athena turn off the Nintendo 64 and place the Super Mario 64 cartridge back in its case, neatly put back in Baiken's Nintendo 64 collection.
Blake brightly says, "After all, it's the third day of our social event. Four more days and it'll end, except we wish it wouldn't end if it lasted longer."
"But as we all know, things gotta come to an end. And now that our review ended, we better go back to bed. Hopefully Baiken isn't awake by now.", told Weiss, wisely.
Ruby concurred, "We sure do hope so.", as when the six girls were about to sneak out of the room through the curtain...
...they see Baiken come to the cased opening leading to the woman cave.
"Baiken! Oh, you scared us.", Blake and Weiss said, the latter jumping into her girlfriend's arms.
Ruby explained to Baiken, "Before you say anything, we couldn't be able to sleep because of a sleep disruption, so me and my three teammates decided to review a movie so it'll help us get ready to sleep again. Athena and Maka here was even doing the same thing, except they took playing a game would help them fall asleep... We didn't try to wake anyone up, and we particularly didn't want to wake you up either, seeing how you're a brave and strong samurai lord here."
"Please don't be angry.", Yang bravely says this, "We only watched and reviewed Edge of Tomorrow, if you don't mind."
The six girls then wait for the samurai's response...
Baiken then replied, "It's alright. You didn't cause too much trouble. I've happened to waken up during that review of yours, and I've heard every word. I reviewed that movie before, and I have to say, it's a great...fan-frigging-tastic science-fiction movie. It's like Minority Report combined with Halo, best aspects from both combined. But to be fair, your review of the film has made me impressed, but I don't see the ending as bad as it is besides being a bit Inception-ish in a good way."
"You think so?", team RWBY interested.
The pink-haired samurai sighed proudly, "We all have different opinions on things. But truthfully, Edge of Tomorrow is one of the most spectacular action flicks in the 21st century.", as she says, "We all need to go back to sleep soon..."
"Right, we were just headed back down to rest. By the way, you were incredible for what you did last night, you know... Protecting your kingdom and your people.", reflected Ruby, "Even your friends came to help you."
Baiken reminded, "Considering that I am still strong enough to remove any threat to this land."
"Right you are. You are the best samurai lord we've ever met.", Yang smiled.
Athena and Maka agreed, "Now if you excuse us, we're gonna go back to sleep now."
"See you in the morning.", Blake and Weiss bid kindly as the six then quietly went out of Baiken's bedroom.
Despite her usual serious demeanor, Baiken once again can't help but smile compassionately for the girls after RWBY's review.
Team RWBY soon bid Athena and Maka goodnight as they, while the four girls and the other two go back to their washitsu guest rooms, finally able to go back to sleep.
Thankfully, their sleep was undisrupted for the rest of the night.
