Team RWBY's Commentary of Winter's Tale (Part 2 - Final)
"Peter and Beverly head to a ball as they dance the night away. It seems that their night was starting to turn more intimate...", Ruby continued with the second part of their review as they saw Peter and Beverly make love in the following snippet, "This part questions us. Is this Eternals' way of making love or is this Fifty Shades' way of making love.", before getting responses to the Eternals option as she said, "Worth a shot.", unveiling afterwards, "But it turns out, Beverly had died due to one of Lucifer's men spiking her champagne with poison. This leads to a very emotional scene with Peter trying to revive her.", spectating him muttering worryingly 'Please don't go' as he kisses the lifeless Beverly, "I only known you for quite some time, I don't want you to die now!"
Yang continues the story, "Peter gets on his horse but is confronted by Pearly and his men.", hearing Pearly say that he thinks that the god is just as bloodthirsty as he and his men are and likes a good fight, before she replied to the film, "Oh, surely you and your men are 100% wrong on that one.", reacting to where Peter fights Pearly's men before freeing the horse and telling it to go as it flies off, "Wait a minute, if he's fighting them, shouldn't he get on the horse and fly off with him? He's fighting dozens of men at the moment, he should take time to retreat or fight back! Not give up and let it go! What is wrong with you?", soon reacting to Pearly headbutting Peter five times before pushing him off the railing.
"That's fucking bullshit! He headbutts him five times before throwing him off the railing? Five hits?! Five fucking hits?! This is making Mortal Engines' way of pushing characters off platforms more pathetic than ever!", Blake aggravated and calms down before synopsizing, "He manages to survive but he suffers from amnesia, forgetting who he is and what his miracle is supposed to be. That is where we cut to the present in 2014, where Peter had not aged one bit for some reason...can't tell if the logic of Baccano plays a part in the story...and he wanders through the city for a century while drawing chalk art of the image of the girl looking at the moon."
Weiss issued, "What's strange is that in the film's marketing, the modern-day portion of the film was prominently used. But yet, we're already one hour and fifteen minutes in and only less than fourty minutes left of the movie, and now we're already in the modern era! That is one of the most misleading marketing campaigns we've ever seen.", soon reacting when they saw Cecil tossing a coin in a later scene while Peter was strolling in the park, "Well, at least the coin-tosser made it just fine. Will Smith would've fit that role.", imitating when he lands the coin once Peter and a young girl named Abby bump into each other, "Tails. Absolute win."
"Peter soon meets a young girl named Abby who has a mother named Virginia Gamely, played by Jennifer Connelly.", the leader of team RWBY introduced, "Nice to see that Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly reunited together and with Akiva Goldsman in this after their work in A Beautiful Mind, we must say.", resuming, "We then see a repeat of the opening from earlier where he goes back to his hideout and looks at the things from his childhood which brings his memories back for some reason. So...why did I have to be shown again since we already saw what happened?", abstracting, "We also find that Pearly is still alive in the modern era and has now become a successful businessman, but has become aware of Peter's vital status and wants to hunt him down, thinking they had killed the wrong person for the miracle."
The elder sister of Ruby Rose then saw a scene with Virginia introducing herself to Peter, "You might recognize me from my Oscar-winning performance in A Beautiful Mind. I think Dark Water was one of my strangest works, however.", describing next, "The two find old photographs from Peter's past, where Virginia recognizes he is from that era.", then mimicking as Virginia was surprised, "Wow, I didn't know you were immortal!", also saying, "We then see an older version of Beverly's daughter Willa, played by Oscar-winner Eva Marie Saint. We've heard that...she's retired from acting, although she played many roles in the past, like On The Waterfront, North by Northwest, and playing Martha Kent in Superman Returns and the older Katara in The Legend of Korra."
"She is a brilliant actress, and hopefully she could be a centennial in the future... Hopefully.", the female Faunus respected, "Willa surprisingly reunites with Peter Lake easily without any sign of memory loss thankfully, as they catch up on what happened when Beverly died and when the years passed.", before seeing Peter kiss Willa on the forehead and bids farewell, "May your finest work in cinema and acting be worthwhile. I will forever cherish your role as Katara in Korra as well...", continuing, "So Virginia invites Peter to dinner, as it revealed, in a sad twist, that her daughter Abby has cancer.", as the four girls look distressed and saddened by the revelation.
The Schnee heiress worried, "Oh my goodness... Why is this movie doing this to us? First, we had Bridge to Terabithia killing off one of the leads, now we have Winter's Tale where a kid is diagnosed with cancer?! This is taking it too far!", then hearing Abby ask her mother in the film where they would go when they die, "...You are tearing us apart, Goldsman!", before the girls heard Virginia ask them what kind of ice cream they would like between vanilla, chocolate or pistachio while Abby and Virginia jinx that the former hates vanilla, "Oh, we would really love some ice cream right about now. I do hope none of them is Little Baby's Ice Cream-", just until they saw Abby suddenly have a seizure much to their shock.
They rewatched the clip as the four girls looked worried and shocked.
"Oh my gosh, why is this happening? You're tearing our heartstrings so much that this is just as sad as the hospital scene from Million Dollar Baby, or the execution scene from The Green Mile! But what is causing this cancer of hers to inflict so much grief onto us? Maybe Little Baby's Ice Cream had something to do with it!", saddened Ruby before revealing, "But, big surprise, it was revealed, what else, that Abby was Peter's miracle the whole time. What are the odds? A cancer patient being Peter's miracle... We don't want to disrespect cancer representation, but we pray for you all with all do respect...", then telling, "Pearly and his men arrive as the three heroes head off to save Abby's life."
Yang describes furthermore, "That's when he summons his horse once again to take them there. There's only less than 15 minutes left, so I guess this is the climax? Never thought this movie would end quicker, actually.", then watching the scene of them flying over New York as the four girls imagine a clip of The Dark Knight with Batman gliding through the city, and also said, "Peter, Virginia and Abby arrive at the old estate as Pearly and his men catch up with them.", overhearing Peter ensure Virginia that the men wouldn't catch up with them yet the latter reluctantly trusts this before they heard the cars approach, "You were saying?"
Blake then climaxed, "So Peter commands his horse to fly off once again, before zooming back down and causing the ice to crack which sends Pearly's men sinking into the icy water. Okay, first the horse leaves him, then the horse leaves again and EASILY takes out Pearly's men. Why didn't it do that earlier? That's one of the movie's greatest mysteries indeed!", shrugging off, "Well, whatever, it's off to the big fight between Peter and Pearly, but it seems that Peter is getting his ass handed to him. But it was short-lived as he stabs him with the name plate he kept when he was younger, turning him into a snow sculpture. I guess, that must've had freezing powers or something...?"
"Anyway, time is of the essence as we have Peter saying his ritual poetry in order to save Abby.", Weiss recounted before they heard Peter say to Abby 'Please come back' in the climax, "I don't want you to have the same fate like Beverly last time... Please don't lose your life this time...", then reacting to him kissing her forehead, "How come this feels uncomfortably strange all of a sudden...?", and then saying, "Miraculously, Abby survives! Does this mean her cancer is gone now? The miracle is fulfilled, so I guess that's done and done. This means Peter says his farewells to Virginia and Abby as he revisits Beverly's grave and decides to join her in the stars.
That was when the ending showed Willa looking at the stars as Peter joins Beverly's star, joining her in the afterlife in the process, as the narration wonders the possibility if they get to become stars.
Ruby faithfully said, "I believe that all stars go to heaven and in the stars in the infinity of space itself. Although, we admit and with all do respect, not all stars go to heaven."
Team RWBY then made their closing thoughts of the movie;
"So that was Winter's Tale. How was it? Well, let's just say that it was bad. The thought of an Oscar-winning writer that turned bad directing his first film is problematically complicated in so many levels.", concludes Ruby.
Yang critiqued, "Although the casting was well done, the execution in its acting outside of Colin Farrell and Eva Marie Saint's performances, story and writing, along with the fact that this lacks any emotional depth, shows all the problems there."
"The production design is really nice and the cinematography is alright, apart from its use of lens flares. The music is intriguing, the visual effects aren't perfect for a few scenes, and Will Smith... I don't know what to say about this, but he should've played the guy with the coin toss.", Blake preferred.
Weiss finished, "But we can't completely blame Akiva Goldsman for trying. This may be his first film, but after his second film Stephanie getting negative reception as well, he may be on a rocky start, and hopefully some day he will return to doing the special Oscar-winning talent in the future."
"Hey, guys!", Athena said as they arrived at the dorm again to see team RWBY, along with Cameron, Yume and Baiken coming back with Athena as well with their luggage, "Sorry for being late. We had to talk to Glynda and Ozpin where we would sleep at while we have our temporary visit for the next week or two since we had permission back home, so they told us we're staying in your dorm for now."
Ruby says, "We don't mind that at all.", smiling.
Getting up from their commentary chairs, Ruby, Yang, Blake and Weiss came over to hug their four fellow friends Athena, Cameron, Baiken and Yume altogether, the eight reuniting from the social event.
They were Criticals after all.
